The way people figure things out sometimes, it's like Spidey Senses:
Quick tip - when people named things, they didn't necessarily think hard about what the thing actually is but sort of what it reminds them of. Small and wiggly? A worm. Similar to how pineapples are neither pines nor apples. — VLAZ 36 mins ago

@JourneymanGeek yeah, he put everything in GH. Nice copy pasta excercise

@Luuklag well - MSE isn't a issue management engine, and since its a FOSS project, I guess they can't lean on jira plugins (the horror)

8:14 AM
FOSS?

The library that the editor is built on is open source I think
So it makes a lot of sense to replicate the issues there

8:33 AM
Well, I'm not complaining :P It earned me two upvotes (and a downvote) :P

@Tinkeringbell yeah I got a few upvotes as well, and a downvote

9:01 AM
@Luuklag (free open-source software)

I would assume that 'internal' code is also on a git(hub?) repo and there would be corresponding issues/tracking for things on the roadmap
But it makes a lot of operational/"PR" sense to post a link to the issue so folks know its on the roadmap, and folks can bidirectionally refer to the issue/post to check statii

9:19 AM
@Mithical thx :)
@JourneymanGeek Yeah I think I read that somewhere
@JourneymanGeek yeah most definetly, and hopefully entise those that have new issues to report them there directly, so they don't have to copy pasta

@Luuklag that's a well somewhat poisoned by past actions
I'd say the best would be is "Both's fine" - especially if others are reusing the editor
Also to some extent, meta is 'easier' for us, simply cause a lot of users are comfortable with it

@JourneymanGeek pretty sure Nick has mentioned they use GH internally

@Mithical I vaguely remembered that
but yeah, not all here right now so I decided to take the more cautious approach

@Luuklag An answer that could have easily been, and was, edited to remove some words was manually reported; and edited by that person. It's contrary to the repairable offensive posts policy.

11:37 AM
@Rob yeah sounds legit. A blacklisting for one offence, for such a high rep user seems a bit over the top.

12:01 PM
how big is the backlog by now Jnat?

I guess 6 to 8

I guess 16 - 18 ;)

:D

12:25 PM
I have 14 tabs open
should prolly get to 'em today-ish
or, being more realistic, at some point during this week :P

LOL
well, I call this round a win for @Luuklag for having the better estimate ....

@JNat this decade ;)

nah, this week is reasonable enough :P

1:27 PM
Good day everyone. I hope everyone's week is off to a great start.

Too late XD

You had one day to get it going and you already ruined it?

Did you expect anything else from me?
But yeah, since Geek's dog died, the 'everyone' in there just seemed very, very misplaced.

That was sad to read :(
I feel bad for our resident geek.

2:05 PM
@Spevacus As I wrote to my vet - he died as he lived, on his own terms. He had a good life all the way to the end, and as much as I already miss him, he died very peacefully...
Also finished his weekend activities, and passed away when I was clearing my leave so I was able to help take care of almost all of it
@Tinkeringbell I didn't really mention it here much, and passingly in TL

@JourneymanGeek Oh. Oops XD. I saw you posting everywhere so lost track. I hope you don't mind me dropping the bomb here and yanking the carpet from underneath your feet. XD

Naw, didn't really think about it - I didn't really think past meta and the alt-root access chat

I don't have a discord XD

Ssst, don't tell anyone!

Sorry to hear he passed @JourneymanGeek

2:15 PM
@rene It's okay, he's probably just confusing things :)

He was nearly 16. It was a full life, with lots of adventures right to the end

@JourneymanGeek That sounds like it was his time, unfortunately

yup
I kinda am still half expecting him to nose the door open and walk in

2:41 PM
Has anything weird happened for anything on the network? MSE disappeared on me just now, TWP Meta died also.
@JourneymanGeek I'm still sad for the loss of Ash. So sorry to hear of that.

@Snow For someone who spent his whole life in singapore - he touched lives everywhere
@Snow MSE and TWP meta look fine. TWP election page is borked
And we were blessed to have Ash so long

Yeah, meta went down for a while for me, and MSE disappeared out of my pinned communities. I assume that the election page is down to roll out the new UI?
And our Mollie (Mini Schnauzer) is now 13, so every day that she's with us is a blessed bonus.

If I end up getting another dog (some day) It'd likely be a mini schauzer or a westie. Unless another little golden terrier of mysterious parentage crops up in my life

Schnauzers have such characters. I wouldn't kick a westie off the sofa though.

I think it won't be for a few years - I'd want to get off shift work, and move out
I suspect dad would probably complain about how dogs are too much work, then spoil his fur-grandkids rotten, like he did with Ash :D
I need to tell a few of the neighbours about it if I see them, people loved him

2:54 PM
Yeah, that's the tough part. And going for walks without a dog. Your whole routine just gets screwed up.

One of the reasons I wanted to swap jobs was I figured he had a year or two left and wanted to spend more time with him

You know when you love your dog when you move heaven and earth to change your life to suit them.

hehe. My plan had been to get a remote job, and there's a dog friendly co-working space 10 minutes away by car.

Fantastic. Bit different here as COVID has made me work every single day at home with the dogs.

that woulda been nice
I might end up swapping jobs anyway, but I guess there's more options now.

2:59 PM
For sure, but leave room for a dog in your life, at least in the future.

I might stay where I am, stay with the same contracting company (steady work, but pay's a bit dodgy seeming, and there's nothing great), or hopefully move somewhere better
@Snow there will be a "Journeyman Geek Jr" (The dog, not the mod) some day

It won't be Ash, but will be a different and equally loved dog, I'm sure.

But the same way stuff lined up perfectly for Ash to come into my life, stuff has to line up

If it's a Westie, name it after me. :D

lol
(Ash used to belong to an ex-soap opera actress, who bought him cause he pulled on her dress. She then got into a fight with her husband, and my parents were asked to take care of him 'temporariiy' while they sorted it out)
I didn't even know he was in our house when I came back from overseas
and he decided I was a human puppy they'd adopted like he was

3:03 PM
awesome!

@Luuklag regarding that rollback: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/361357/… I had an exchange earlier with that OP and decided it was not worth the effort to go back and forth and accepted their final revisions was ok-ish enough to not 100% invalidate the current answer. I didn't flag for a mod but if tends to go that way don't wait too long to mod flag.

Hey y'all, is Mother Meta an appropriate place to ask about a bug in my SE chatbot? I believe it's something to do with the chat system itself, rather than my code, so I'm not sure if it's more on-topic on Mother Meta, SO or somewhere else?

eh, depends... if it's a bug in your bot... no, but if it's a bug in the api's you are relying on, maybe?

My bot runs fine most of the time, but keeps crashing every couple of days or so with "ConnectionAbortedError: [WinError 10053] An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine". I remember seeing a thread about Smokey needing to send a "heartbeat" ping every once in a while to remain seen as "alive", so I'm not sure if it's got something to do with that

isnt there a chat room for chat bot discussion/development, sobotics or somethin

@user400654 I'm not aware of one, but if there is, I'll happily move over there and ask them :)

looks like it's mostly just bot spam atm
over on the SO chat server

10:02 PM
The SO Botics people would probably be able to help diagnose.

Yeah, just drop a message in chat.stackoverflow.com/rooms/111347/sobotics and someone will pick it up or ping Petter to make sure you get noticed.

@rene Thanks!

10:17 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing if you have an open websocket you'll get a message every 35 seconds at most and I don't have an active reply in a Nodejs chat bot. But I do have insane back-off and retry connect logic. As those 10053 errors are socket errors I more expect that you somehow hit an IP ban. How often do you allow messages to be posted? See the throttle curve for chat near the end: meta.stackexchange.com/a/164900

10:34 PM
@rene It posts 1 message a day at midnight UTC. Someone in another room suggested it may be due to my spotty internet connection, which seems likely

Does the bot login first or does it rely on its cookies and still valid fkey? Maybe worth trying to have it post the message 5 minutes later? At 0:00 UTC some daily scripts run, maybe just enough to have the network handling stall a bit on the SE site, breaking your spotty connetion more easily ...

11:03 PM
@rene Sorry for the late replies, I always forget that Meta.Chat rooms don't show up with the normal chat. It's an adapted version of this, which is used IIRC for the bot in the Chemistry.SE chat rooms. I think it does login (chatbot.login() is necessary), but it seems to also use a fkey to post messages and log in

@cairdcoinheringaahing if it does throw on this line: github.com/hippalectryon-0/SE_Bot/blob/master/chatbot.py#L158 I would just catch exception and then retry after a small sleep (1 to 5 seconds) for max 5 times and see if that helps.
