If someone could please pin the link on "creating new Help Center documents" above, as SE announcements are generally pinned, that would be very nice.

Finally, the number of answers I've posted surpasses the number of questions I've asked
For the longest time, I always had slightly more questions asked than answers provided.

@rene Yes, lost soul looking for SO en español

@RyanM are you spanish enough to redirect them to the how to ask on that site with a comment?

@rene ehhhhhhh, I could, but I'm hesitant given that it's no MCVE. I've gotten the impression that pointing people who ask bad questions in the wrong spot to ask them in the right spot is not necessarily productive (if they couldn't tell it was the wrong spot from the complete lack of Spanish, will they really read the help center on es.SO?)
(also it was deleted before I had a chance anyway, which is fine)

@RyanM it is deleted already, so ... thanks for checking ...

@NordTheLoftyWizard Go C? ;)
@Tinkeringbell did you have a chance to play? My kids reached total score of 13M yesterday, and made a party from it. lol

@Shadow10YearsWizard Nope I was busy hunting halloweaster eggs on another forum this weekend :)

@Tinkeringbell so early?? :D

@Tinkeringbell Wouldn't having Easter every six months, rather than every year, make it a bit more boring?

Something with migrating the forum software so they couldn't have the hunt around easter, and now they made it part of the halloween celebrations. It was fun :)

lol
Still not a valid excuse to avoid Icy Tower. Harold is lonely. :D

8:04 AM
@Tinkeringbell six months later: suddenly wondering why there's no Easter celebration

Search is dead.... :(

Really dead or just useless?

Dead, loading forever.
And just when I really needed it for new answer, lol.
Guess another major attack in ongoing.

... something's building... I can't remember if that borks search or not.

(searched for just something to see if it's alive. It's not. the above page appeared after few minutes of loading.)
@Catija heh. so yes, it breaks the search.

I just don't know if the two are connected...

8:23 AM
Hard to believe it's just a coincidence. :)

Seems like it's taking way too long to get unborked.

If it happens on all sites but Meta, it's definitely a build issue. (Meta receives builds on a different cycle)

Apparently it's not a build problem.

Yep, not working on Meta either

Is the search function not working?
@Shadow10YearsWizard Yes.

8:41 AM
@Pandya Try searching for an answer to that ;)
Hmm it took a while, but I got a results page
It's working fine now

@Luuklag Yes

Cross site spammer stackexchange.com/users/19269808/desiree-clarin . Can you expedite deletion @Catija?

9:19 AM
@Luuklag I'd just ping @JNat and wait

okay cool @SonictheK-DayHedgehog

Most employees actually don't accept such pings, but JNat is an exception, I've obtained permission by email to ping for good measure

@JNat by orders of Sonic ;) Here is a cross-site spammer: stackexchange.com/users/19269808/desiree-clarin

@Luuklag Post 1: Could not find data for this post in the API. It may already have been deleted.

spam is abundant today

10:36 AM
@Pandya SE updated some code, and while it was updating search was down, yes.
(at least 10 minutes, wasn't around to check after that.)
@Catija so the build broke something else... it really can't be a coincidence.
Think it's worth a bug report, so dev can dig in the logs to see if it's something that might happen again, and fix it before it does?
15 minutes downtime for search isn't big deal, but also not minor issue.

This is when it came back online more or less: chat.meta.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/8614873#8614873

Wow, think the homepage was never so red.
Almost 50% (14 out of 38) of the homepage questions with a red tag. ;)

It's red dabediedabeday dabediedabeday ;)

@Luuklag well some of those are your doing, you edited them. ;)

Yeah my OCD triggered because the list order was off ;)

@Shadow10YearsWizard 17/38 now

10:51 AM
@Luuklag lol what did you do now? :D

just count again ;)

@Luuklag oh.... faq doesn't count.

its red none the less ;)
ill be off to grab some lunch, cya in a bit

@Luuklag hehe, yeah. But less red than the others. :P
@Luuklag I'm already after lunch. Bon appetite!
Today, I had this:
Mujaddara (Arabic: مجدرة‎ mujadarah, with alternative spellings in English majadra, mejadra, moujadara, mudardara, and megadarra) consists of cooked lentils together with groats, generally rice, and garnished with sautéed onions. == Name and origin == Mujaddara is the Arabic word for "pockmarked"; the lentils among the rice resemble pockmarks. The first recorded recipe for mujaddara appears in Kitab al-Tabikh, a cookbook compiled in 1226 by al-Baghdadi in Iraq. Containing rice, lentils, and meat, it was served this way during celebrations. Without meat, it was a medieval Arab dish commonly consumed...
Well, not this style, but still.. rice with good stuff in it. ;)
@David you had lunch already?

10:58 AM
@Shadow10YearsWizard would you say its,.... the groatest of all time?
I feel like we need an overview-roll-up question for all of it :D

@Shadow10YearsWizard nope. it's only 11am ...

11:24 AM
@JourneymanGeek hmm? What is? The redness? ;)
@DavidPostill so you're excused. Breakfast? :D

No, toilets aren't full. :D

3:29 PM
hence me asking if it was the groatest of all time...

@JourneymanGeek the rice?

well, the groats?

@JourneymanGeek nah. It's bought from the supermarket, not home made.
I would have taken picture of my own, but alas... it's all gone and long thrown. (to trash. ;))
It's the same as the above, with minor design changes, few years passed and they change the text/color/etc.
Found a better picture: i.stack.imgur.com/Hm4qX.png (saving you the onebox this time, one is enough. ;))
Yes, face masks are coming. — Catija ♦ 57 secs ago
Yay! @Catija any spoilers about trigger for face mask hat? :D

3:51 PM
You won't even need to try.

Automatic hat?
Yaakov is the one responsible for the hats again, I assume?

Nicolas is the CM in charge, I'm... helping because I love hats... Yaakov is involved but Branding is doing a lot of the work, I think. They're doing all the new artwork, anyway.
It won't be a balpha WB but I think it will be good.

@Catija awesome! That's a good team.

Someone better finds that em-dash on their keyboard or you'll be haunted by it forever ...

@Shadow10YearsWizard lol... yeah... would be amazed if somehow your account got nuked... but very curious to know if it ever ends up getting flagged :p

I assume you have enough stories to share of weird things that get flagged ....

I... really don't like emdashes :P

4:16 PM
I ... just don't want to say told you so in 6 to 8 weeks ....

Well, I'm sure @JNat will turn them into em-dashes if that's really what people want. He converts my ` - ` into em-dashes all the time.

4:26 PM
emdashes are a waste of space

SpacesAreAWasteOfSpaceToo

Don't use spaces around emdashes—they should count as word separators.

(and obviously don't forget to always mix spaces and tabs for indentation... /me runs)

4:44 PM
@Catija shouldn't I...? :P

@JonClements luckily, no way to flag accounts. :D
@rene told - you - so
@JonEricson really? And hello! :D

Ahoy!

Your office became too cold so you came here to the cozy Tavern? @Jon ;)

That sounds more interesting than I joined after your comment reply on MSE... so let's go with that :p

Just thought I'd see if my topography knowledge could be useful—lo and behold!

(Two Jons make this confusing.)

@Catija or post a comment then the edit will cause a revision ^^
(unless self comment doesn't count? Didn't really check)

Ah, yeah, that's likely easier... I'm... not sure if self comments count or not, actually. I... don't know that we made it that smart.
(so it probably does count)

lol fair enough

@JonEricson Can't be helped I'm afraid... good to see you around

4:53 PM
You too. Always good to have Jon solidarity.

@JonClements well we can go with @JonC and @JonE, I guess. ;)

@JonEricson not that I'm biased but it is an awesome name :p

Are you both Jonathans? That seems to be common when shortening to "Jon".

I am.

5:02 PM
@Catija like Jeff is Jeffrey? ;)

@Catija Yup

:D Andy's middle name is Jonathon... with two os instead of two as.

That's very.... speciol. :D
Jonathon who can easily run a marathon... ;)

Sounds a bit like a name you might find a fantasy book :)

@Catija I've seen some quite inventive ways of spelling it... but that's the other common one... have seen Johnathon and variants like that

5:06 PM
Middle names are pretty rare in Israel, for some reason.

:D

Well, if it's anything like mine, there's a good reason for that :p

@Tinkeringbell Oh, you mean like Robb and Bran ? :P

And it's weird, since we're in the Middle East.... :P

@Shadow10YearsWizard /me groans :p

5:07 PM
@Catija Something like that yeah. Pick a very common name and change one or two letters is a valid tactic, it seems :P

hey @Catija there's someone here with a username that clearly indicates that's not old enough to use the site... think with that and that terrible bit of attempt humour - they should get nuked :p

it took me this long to realize there were two jons here
🚽

@user400654 Now there's three :P

@JonClements Oh, I see what you mean. I'll get right on that.

huh! Found one. ;)

5:08 PM
@Catija having said that... that cake does look quite nice... I think if they share it out, things can be overlooked? :p

@user400654 no no, can't be for both. Each Jon needs his own.
So from now on, post two every time. :P

Cake bribes are always an option.

@user400654 Ah yes, the cursive toilet. For when you drunk and sit straight.

I... did not realize you could make emoji italic.

5:10 PM
Tilting toilets are fun.
@Catija well we have emoji guru here.
But yeah, since it's just a font, makes sense we can format it.

That said, I understand there's two ways to "italicize" things... one just... slants it over somehow and the actual italics are generally a separate version of the font? Or something?

@Shadow10YearsWizard one of those everyday phrases one never hears enough :p

no idea
fonts aren't really my thing

@JonClements or just vivid memories of airplane toilets. ;)

Ah, apparently it's italic and oblique.
> Oblique type is a form of type that slants slightly to the right, used for the same purposes as italic type. Unlike italic type, however, it does not use different glyph shapes; it uses the same glyphs as roman type, except slanted. Oblique and italic type are technical terms to distinguish between the two ways of creating slanted font styles; oblique designs may be labelled italic by companies selling fonts or by computer programs. Oblique designs may also be called slanted or sloped roman styles.

(just changed font size to 200px)

Q: What triggers the "would like to find and connect to devices on your local network" permission notification on iOS 14?

William GPWhat actual method calls, excluding Bonjour, triggers the "would like to find and connect to devices on your local network" permission notification on iOS 14? This is the screen shot from the WWDC session on this new permission. Which is only somewhat helpful as an overview. I'm more interested i...

Pretty sure iOS app indeed use Bonjour

@Shadow10YearsWizard you speak French now?

@Catija and you're using it over a local network I assume?

Hmm?
It's ... just my phone.

5:35 PM
You use your home wifi?

When I'm at home. But I use the app when I'm out and about, too.

Okay, I can imagine the App / Phone "tells" the apps that it connected to a wifi network and that it found other devices, for example another phone or macbook. That is probably the Bonjour service @sha was talking about earlier.

@Spev thanks for the Lifejacket!
@rene yup, and until iOS 14, it didn't trigger any alarm...

;D

@Spe wait, you understand what I talk about? lol

5:39 PM
Oh... is that the thing that lets the phone see that you're using similar apps on your other devices?

I think so, yes. I ddn't read-up on that Bonjour service. I said "Bonjour" to Apple long ago.

@Shadow10YearsWizard Mhmm, I'm familiar with that badge and the answer of yours I edited earlier. Neat to see that the question went on to get a positive score.

@Spevacus yup. :)

Au revoir?

French fries!

5:41 PM
@Catija would fit as well ...

I think Bonjour has the same issue that "aloha" does... it is both a greeting and a farewell.

@rene so you post answer to the MSO post?

I dropped French on request of my French teacher ...
@Shadow10YearsWizard no, you?

@rene no, it's time for kids to play Icy Tower
It's more important than answering SE/SO questions. ;)

Okay.

5:51 PM
@Catija Really? Perhaps it's a very informal farewell then, because I've always been told to use au revoir (ooievaar for rene ;) )

Ah, yeah, seems I was wrong. Salut, can be both?

That I don't know. I could ask in TAS, there's a few French people there :P

6:12 PM
@Catija no, only a greeting, not a goodbye

Rob
By those standards "thank you" can be both - IE: "Thanks for helping" and (politely) "Go away, quickly!".

Ah sorry, I thought I was replying to the Au revoir bit, that is only goodbye. "Salut" can indeed be both.

:D
My French is... from high school, which is now 20 years ago.

Yeah, mine's getting up there these days. I used to live there for a few years, but I left in 2015 and my French has been steadily declining since then.

Well... living there is different, too. American language acquisition is... merde.

6:45 PM
@Catija I still mean to take up other languages at some point... but my excuse is that since English seems to be the current lingua franca, there's little point, and when I've tried basic French/Spanish etc... on holiday, they just take pity on your attempts (I'm guessing as they don't want their language butchered) and just talk to you in English anyway :(

@Catija True. Although, in this particular regard, that cuts both ways. French language acquisition is pretty merdic too.

My French teacher was one of the most eccentric and fun teachers at our high school, and clearly loved her job. I have lots of memories from that class.

(although I don't think most of us are going to be having foreign holidays in the immediate future...)

@JonClements It gets better after you reach a basic level of proficiency. It's worth it!

My best memory is when she taught us how to read recipes in French, and I demonstrated my knowledge by borrowing a hot plate from the chemistry lab and using it to make crepes in class

7:14 PM
@Catija Don't worry. Even in high school I couldn't get it right, when we took our international school city trip I told the hosts of me and a classmate we were going to sleep, but mixed up dormir and coucher :P

A possible bug:
See this comment.
The user who posted it is deleted.
Has been deleted, I mean.
But their name still shows. Not their ID.
It's not a case of "question migrated, username shown but not linked"
because they posted a comment there. They must have had an account.

@Ollie Account deletions in 2011 and earlier didn't overwrite the username to user ID.

You learn something new every day ;) Thanks, Sonic.
Yet another possible bug:
The capitalization on that prompt is nonexistent (except for Area 51).

@Ollie Guess it wasn't updated to use the new Stacks guidelines. Prior to those, the convention was to make everything lowercase whenever possible.

Well, report...
@SonictheK-DayHedgehog That's a lot of guideline. Is there a specific part?
These. (?)

Not entirely sure where exactly it's written, it may not be there, but it is definitely new convention since 2018.

@Ollie, Regarding your recent Area 51 questions, hopefully you know that Area 51 is in a holding pattern and is unlikely to get its Job Jar attended to RSN.
