Like maybe it would make slightly, only slightly more sense if SO and voting buttons were new on the internet, if this was 2009.

But it's not. Every dev knows about SO and the meanings of up and down arrows are clear. People don't use them because they forget to, it hasn't become second nature to go and do it when you're reading a post. People also post "thanks" as a 'human' impulse.

What I feel would happen if you try to reconcile these two together is a few or many people would forget about the arrows and use the icon instead.
