@Aibobot in what level? I can arrange something.... ;)

@Aibobot I'm thinking of giving away a thousand reputation on Meta.SE, does that count?

@Mithical why only 1000?

Nah, who cares about your rep

I can use those commands, and don't appear on that list

In theory you have 15k to spare without losing privileges, @Mith. ;)

Unless you're planning to cause drama by bountying something controversial.
But you're often boring so you won't do that.

6:31 AM
@Rob those have no real effect, the standby command does have actual impact.
!!/alive?

@Rob Sure, but the !!/standby command is limited to people with privileges - I just don't remember if that's blacklister privs or regular privs.

@ShadowKeepsSocialDistance ... did I miss something?

Rob's command was in a multi-line message

@SmokeDetector yes

Rob
I didn't want to test with a harmful command; obviously

oh
!!/location isn't harmful

@ShadowKeepsSocialDistance teward/Osiris

@SmokeDetector You missed typing a correct ellipsis

@M.A.R. Nah, a poetry contest... on Meta.SE. :D

teward is scottish for "towards"

Rob
It provides us with your location, phone #, and a few photos; not harmful.

6:34 AM
@Mithical Okay, that sounds like a crazy birthday party idea. Interested

Basically, you have three weeks or so to write a normal Meta.SE post... but in verse (such as this). At the end of that period, 1,000 reputation in bounties will be awarded, spread out across the best ones. You must have under 40,000 Meta.SE to be eligible to win a bounty.
Submissions are links to the post, posted as answers to the contest thread.
In honor of Yaakov's haikus and the community-a-thon.
(Hopefully encourage some staff to participate? Maybe?)

@Mithical I have 1 meta.SE only
And don't technically have it, just . . . have it

Whoops, left out a word
should be "under 40,000 Meta.SE rep"
I blame my lack of sleep

I know, I'm being deliberately obtuse
Sounds one of your more fun ideas. Hopefully people aren't too grumpy or burnt out to smile

@ShadowKeepsSocialDistance You've got rep coming out of your ears, not all of us do :P

6:42 AM
@ShadowKeepsSocialDistance We are not allowed to mail bobcats any more

7:08 AM
WTF!
Just noticed the new "Thanks" button thing
How does it even integrate with upvotes?

@M.A.R. you can share your thanks here

It doesn't. It's just a list of names that clicked the button that shows when you view the timeline.

Yeah I mean I saw that post, and your answer

(BTW, has anyone mentioned yet that the second version is more likely to be interpreted as "prayer" than "thanks"?)

only if you're western :D

7:11 AM
"We noticed an increase in shoplifting small goods, so we dedicate a small container full of peanuts for whoever wants to grab a handful."

Makes sense. If your pockets are full of peanuts, you can't fit goods there.

If maybe it auto-processed into a real or anon upvote, then there'd only be the annoying icon to be annoyed at
This is literally giving people who don't use the system as intended a means of not using the system as intended
5
People would thank each other "becuz it'z moar hooman" and not upvote

@M.A.R. Ehh, I think because it's becoming part of the system, it's giving people who don't use the system as intented a means of using the system as intended?

THIS IDEA IS HORRIBLE
@Tinkeringbell What do the thanks translate to?

@M.A.R. Thanks?

7:15 AM
Actually - it could be a less confusing way to ease people into upvoting

@Tinkeringbell While we're at it, let's remove the upvote button?

maybe throw them a reminder the first time they react when they can vote...

@M.A.R. it puts your name on a barely visible list and .... increments a number? Not sure about the latter.

increments a number

Seriously, there are only so so so many ways for it to go wrong
At least it's just "a test"
Like maybe it would make slightly, only slightly more sense if SO and voting buttons were new on the internet, if this was 2009.
But it's not. Every dev knows about SO and the meanings of up and down arrows are clear. People don't use them because they forget to, it hasn't become second nature to go and do it when you're reading a post. People also post "thanks" as a 'human' impulse.

7:19 AM
@M.A.R. Hey, I'm not a fan of it either ;)

What I feel would happen if you try to reconcile these two together is a few or many people would forget about the arrows and use the icon instead.

to quote that garden parable... the gardeners have been asking for fencing to stop people from running over carefully curated plots by shear numbers. Instead, those people get sticks to write their name in the ground while they're at it.

I mean, go check the transcript and see how many times I've outright said an idea is horrible in the past, what, five years? It'd be fewer than 10 I think.
I counted three.
This here is when I'm being an arsehole to Derp:
Mar 28 '18 at 14:00, by M.A.R. ಠ_ಠ
@Derpy I don't think they're an horrible idea. I think they're a horrible idea.
Ah, good times
Actually maybe not. That's was when the whole welcoming shebang started I think.

@Mithical How is alt text useful?

@Daniil basically for folks who use screen readers or other accessibility tools, its what they see
Personally I'd say if its a recent post - that alone is good enough. For folks digging up older posts, hopefully they have more substancial edits too

@Daniil It's a basic part of accessibility.

Q: Who in the company is responsible for accessibility?

Robert ColumbiaWe've had a number of accessibility concerns/complaints lately: "The Loop May 2020" contains inaccessible image with no transcription (May 26, 2020) Changes to the close dialogue have broken keyboard shortcuts for closing a post (April 14, 2020) "The Loop #2" contains inaccessible images with n...

Q: A Meta.SE poetry contest: Write poems, win rep!

Mithical Yaakov Ellis Posting answers as haikus Poetry contest I'm sure that at least some of you have seen Yaakov Ellis's recent haiku answers. If not, here as some examples: (1), (2), (3). In that spirit, I also posted a bug report entirely in limerick form (with a bit of editing from @ArtOfCode). An...

Best of luck Chaucer

@Mithical can you at least put my name in the title so that I can work on that stat?

"The Yaakov Rewards"
What does the name "Yaakov" mean?

"ankle". ;)

not exactly

9:28 AM
hence the smiley

user707129
Are there any rules for the poems? @Mithical

user707129
Like rhyming etc. (I'm not much of a writer so I have no clue)

> This can be any type of poetry - haikus, limericks, sonnets, freeform - but it has to be an original poem.
Am I allowed to play?

yes
Staff is especially encouraged to participate

Because they'll need the rep? :D

9:31 AM
Um... what if you don't have a bug/feature-request to report? I just posted a bug today, can I still edit it to count? @Mithical

...sure, why not. It's June 18th.

@Daniil then you can reply with feedback to the garden blog post in poem form (as long as it is relevant, and longer than @Shog9's response)

@Daniil you can still look for things to answer

@JohnDvorak Though, I'd be a bit careful with that one: Don't make people think you're mocking them/not taking them seriously.
Use your best judgment, I guess..

What if I link to the contest, would that clarify the intent sufficiently?

9:33 AM
@Mithical I actually made a monster PR a few weeks ago, fixing the Alt text on all of the SO solution. But it was too big. need to break it down into more reviewable pieces

@JohnDvorak Hopefully :)

Wow, nice.

too big for Git, or too big for SEI's CR?

We've been working on alt text for images at Science Fiction & Fantasy, got about a hundred down in the past three weeks

I guess I secretly do want to see some posts answered with poetry only XD
The ones that complain about suspensions etc. :P

9:34 AM
+1

@JohnDvorak too big to review properly (and have different teams review their own relevant sections). Git can handle it no problem

But that does not make it a good idea XD

more of an organizational/process thing

ah, nice.

@Tinkeringbell Oh my goodness that'd be gold

9:35 AM
No. You hear me? I said NO :P
But yeah, it would be XD

Probably would violate the rule about not being on a closed post. ;)

"Random.SE has a censorship problem from mods with God complexes, and I'm a concerned unbiased citizen just raising concern"

@Mithical Not if you time it just right :P

Or or or
The ones that blame everything and everyone are the best
Like "you have a psychological condition that makes you want to downvote and close vote my great questions"

@M.A.R. Like honestly, if they could be reduced to a single haiku, that's better than the walls of text they usually are :P

9:39 AM
@Tinkeringbell Yeah when I'm responding to such questions, it feels like I'm half a robot and half Shakespeare
Trying to come up with new analogies of concepts you've talked about 100 times
Perfect poetry practice

I'll stick with sinterklaasgedichten and nothing else, those are already annoying enough to write.

I got you right up to dichten

user707129
I have my poem (I think)

So Sinterklaas is Sinterklass, and ge is just this useless thing you use to make verbs and stuff

MorningZ

'dichten' is the verb for writing poetry. 'gedichten' are the things that result from someone that dichts, a dichter.

Your m reminds me of McDonalds

Think so

OK, that's all I needed to know for now. Thanks

9:51 AM
Jeez can we get some of the pins off our load?
The only times there are so many pins are when some drama happened and a few people got suspended
Is reminded of 2018

Hmm... six pins, five of them by me. We could clean up a bit :P

Shudder
@Mithical IT WAS YOU

PIN ALL THE THINGS!!!

Knocked one off, the others are still pretty new

+1 for knowing that my first name, when properly pronounced, has three syllables — Yaakov Ellis ♦ 28 mins ago
Cheating, as was their wont
Your pronoun is "they" right

9:55 AM
aye

Back to the cheating topic

Speaking a language isn't cheating :P

I realize this all is obvious just a ruse to get more upvotes and reps only to give away a smaller fraction
Such a capitalist notion

pffft, there's no way I get to +100

At least you pay double taxes
Unless that's also a ruse
@Mithical There's probably some interest rates involved
And also, on a bigger timescale, a post is always better than some dormant rep
Don't think I don't see through you, Bill Gates.
Why is the guy on the right rubbing the backs of his hands?

@djsmiley2kStaysInside Yes?
@JohnDvorak It doesn't sound very . . . Hmm

10:19 AM
@M.A.R. Yaakov in pure direct translation means "He will follow".
But actually it's just a name from the old bible.
Pretty common, but many people I know are actually using "Kobi" instead - shorter and sounds less archaic. ;)
@Yaakov something tells me you're being called Yaakov by everyone, right? (i.e. not Kobi)
@YaakovEllis true! Message has been edited. :)

@ShadowKeepsSocialDistance Correct. Though not everyone knows how to pronounce it

@Yaakov also, how come you're not Jacob? Isn't that the common name in USA?
Jacob (; Hebrew: יַעֲקֹב, Modern: Ya‘aqōv , Tiberian: Yaʿăqōḇ; Arabic: يَعْقُوب‎ Yaʿqūb, Greek: Ἰακώβ, Iakṓb), later given the name Israel, is regarded as a Patriarch of the Israelites and so is an important figure in Abrahamic religions, such as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Jacob first appears in the Book of Genesis, the son of Isaac and Rebecca, the grandson of Abraham, Sarah and Bethuel, the nephew of Ishmael. He was the second-born of Isaac's children, the elder being his fraternal twin brother Esau. However, by deceiving Isaac when he was old and blind, Jacob was able to usurp the blessing...

@ShadowKeepsSocialDistance I am also Jacob (on my US passport)

ohh
One man, two names.
:D
@M.A.R. you also have two names?

Transliteration is fickle :D

10:25 AM
@djsmiley2kStaysInside Lady!

@M.A.R. HARRY, case matters.
It's like calling @rene Rene
Or @balpha Balpha
@M.A.R. now it's the opposite: full with good news and wonderful contests. :P

@ShadowKeepsSocialDistance or my favourite (read: pet hate): ArtofCode

Well, according to Dutch rules on how you spell a name... Art of Code is the correct spelling! XD

user707129
@Mithical My post did meet all the rules...

10:37 AM
@ArtOfCode how? Couldn't figure.... :/

@Daniil The first line had too many syllables (10)

user707129
Oh shush, really?

@Tinkeringbell Internet rules apply :P

user707129
Apart from that, anything else?

@ArtOfCode Ah, then it's probably Dear Of Code :P

10:38 AM
@Daniil yup. X-X-N-N-X, where X is between 7 and 9 and N is between 4 and 6

No, wait.. not dear... I knew this sometime long ago...

user707129
@Mithical I blame my syllable counter

user707129
It said it had 9

count 'em yourself :P

Well, if we're to follow so many rules, I'm out of the context.

10:38 AM
I gave it an upvote anyway
...oh, it's deleted, welp

user707129
Deleted while editing the poem

@ShadowKeepsSocialDistance You are always out of context :D

@Mith also, please add to the question indication that rules must be followed, with links like the one you posted, this way you won't have to post such comments.
@Aibobot ?

9 / 9 / 5 / 5 / 7

Your first and second lines have 9 syllables, but your last only has 7

@ShadowKeepsSocialDistance context != contest :D
THAT WORD. IT DOES NOT MEAN WHAT YOU THINK IT MEANS

user707129
Oh, the lines have to be the same, got it

If you want extra technical correctness, the emphasis pattern should be on every other syllable

user707129
Meh

user707129

that is a bit much to ask while still getting across crucial info

It's surprisingly hard to make long words scan well in poems because of that - they often don't have the right emphasis

@Daniil looks much better; I'd +1 but I did that already. ;)

10:44 AM
@Daniil now your last line has 11 syllables
that's better :D

user707129
Probably not bounty-worthy but at least I tried :)

Like the wild boars in Haifa these days?

we've got them here in the golan as well

@Mithical but inside the city/village itself? Crossing roads and attacking people?

sometimes
rarely, though

@ShadowKeepsSocialDistance I think I will forget my self imposed exile for a while and watch this room for a while. Just to see how this Haiku thing goes.

10:50 AM
Turns out it's not only due to Corona, the new mayor of Haifa stopped the hunting of boars that kept them at bay...
@Νеvеrꭑoꭇе well it's running on MSE itself, not really here. Unless something goes wrong. ;)
So...

@Mithical well, of course. It's Iceland.
@Νеvеrꭑoꭇе you can, surely. ;)

user707129
Most were made before my posts were reattached though, but it should still recount the edits IMO

@Mithical did you seriously have to go and edit your post that had the wrong license, so now it is legtimately on cc 4 and I lost my repro?

Sorry. Blame @JourneymanGeek ...

user707129
@YaakovEllis Could you look at the above issue please? Is there anyway to force the system to recalculate edits?

@Daniil I could, but sorry. I cant just jump on issues from Tavern like this. Please open it on MSE and it has to go through the process (this is relatively low priority compared to other things going on)

user707129
11:15 AM
👍 I'll send an email (since this is an extremely rare issue specific to me)

@Mithical hmm, maybe add a second section the said bountied question with updated screenshots, then we throw it a status review? :D

@Mithical @JourneymanGeek repro: meta.stackexchange.com/posts/7572/timeline

user707129
@YaakovEllis Since we're talking about licensing now, shouldn't comments have the license attached to them in the timeline?

@Daniil decided to keep the column in the timeline for licenses on that post alone. So not including licenses there on answers or comments, which are their own entities
otherwise it gets very confusing, which license is applying to the current post for which you are viewing the timeline, and which is for a separate piece of content

user707129
Shouldn't comments get their own timeline then?

you can see the comment license in the tooltip over the comment date

Comments aren't really edited.

About COVID?
I mean, there used to be unicorns and waffles and Waffles and Jon Skeet

I don't know... I don't know much poetry that actually is about stuff... and the ones I do aren't great for polite conversation.

@Tinkeringbell In North America that is sometimes referred to as a triple coil - which means a large quantity, three intestinal loops worth (often drawn as three loops, which is actually a much smaller quantity).
