@Bellatrix most likely they'll ask you to post the problem on Meta, so you can save several weeks by posting it now. ;)
@djsmiley2kTMW not brutal?? Very early into the first book, two heads are chopped.
@It'sOver why stuck? No idea, something just didn't fit in with my own reading/understanding.
It did fit in LoTR and Dune, but not in GoT.

mornin
it is friday!
yay! :)
More sleep tonight :D
My benchmark for sleep balance is if I dont wake up refreshed before the alarm goes off I'm not sleeping enough
which leads to 8.5-9h on most weekdays
I do between 7,5 - 9 on weekdays, depending on whether I need to take an early train the next day or work from home. I also need some time to do stuff that's not work/train/dinner ;)
But either my fitbit is wrong, or I'm getting way too little deep sleep each night :/
how does the fitbit even propose to measure that?
Heart rate?
but in actuality there's something called a sleep study where you go to a hospital to sleep and it helps diagnose any sleep-related malfunctions in your rhytm and routine.
@Magisch Yep
Hence the sentence starting with either fitbit being wrong or ;)
08:07
can you even reliably detect REM cycles via heart rate monitoring?
How am I supposed to know? I'm just wearing a fitbit :P
I'm not a medical professional :P
im thankfully not wearing one
blissfull ignorance
@Magisch The reminders to move help me move a bit more ;) Last Sunday I got so fed up with them, I took a walk just to get rid of them XD
I really should move more too
I should start swimming every week again in the summer
Swimming is kinda nice...
08:16
I read somewhere that jogging is actually super bad for you if you're overweight, as it can wreck your joints and such. And that swimming is better because it is cardio as well but without that drawback
Yeah, though I would say walking/jogging are still better that swimming, because you can always do those, you don't need to get dressed up for them, and you're not stuck with wet hair afterwards.
I'm personally fond of pushups and situps, because you can do those at home, they are very time efficient, and they do a lot.
Yep. Basically any exercise that doesn't need an entrance fee or sports club membership is good for me :)
if you're so inclined you can use a chair to do incline pushups too, although those are a lot harder
I can't even do 40 concurrently on incline while I can do 70-80 on even
That's around 70-80 more than me :P
08:28
constitution builds up incredibly quickly
do that every 2 days for a couple weeks and you see serious results.
08:42
on an unrelated note, weekend is fast approaching
which is nice
'fast' ;) ... It's feeling like it's taking its time here :P

So, I've been working from home on Fridays for what, over a year now? Today: "Daaaad? Did you kill the Wifi?" "Oh, you're home?! Don't you have to work today?"....
I mean, I could ask the same about him, he's the one that's usually supposed to be not at home XD
high time to move out, it seems
XD working on it ;)
We finalized the kitchen plan last weekend.
Looks cool
I hope so..
I'm... very wary, it's weird to pick out a kitchen this way... it's going to be directly connected to the living room, so whatever I picked will influence what goes into the living room later on :/
be like me, have zero sense of aesthethic
pure utilitarianism
09:27
Well I did crochet a whole blanket with the idea that it should go into the living room...
but if it doesn't work out, I guess I can still move it into the bedroom?
Would be a shame though, it's a blanket I'm pretty proud of.
@Magisch I have a rough idea of what I want
I looked into getting a rug or blanket to put somewhere but it is additional work to move and clean
but it'll be a tiny kitchen :D
In the end I settled on 0 decorations and 0 superflous furniture, which means everything has a direct purpose and is optimised for that purpose and ease of cleaning.
(also I hate the standard issue HDB floors, but something nice would be $$$$ for somewhere I might want to move out in 5 years)
@Magisch kitchen... needs fire and ice :D
09:29
@Magisch I mean, I'm definitely going to do some of that... but I want my blanket ;)
(ice, sometimes liquid)
I've already determined I don't want a two person bed because it's harder to clean, for example ;)
@Tinkeringbell 0_0
you... clean... beds?
@JourneymanGeek The bed linens, at least?
09:30
You need to take them off, wash them, hang them, put them back on.... that's all 500 times easier on a single person bed.
but that's a subject of another religious war in my family :D
@Tinkeringbell I help my parents with that... not really
(single bed for me, until Mrs Geek turns up ;D)
Oh, and my parents have one with a fabric headboard and nightstands... those need 'cleaning' too, and it's never just wipe them down with a soft fabric.
Wood for me, and not that particle board garbage, or tube metal
I've broken the latter sitting on the edge a few times ._.
If I get things my way, I'm just taking the bed I have now with me. It's a good bed :)
lol
I don't want to move anything except my PC ._.
09:33
@Tinkeringbell Man, that wouldn't be for me. I need tons of working space for cutting ingredients, bowls, appliances, etc. etc.
@Gimby Ah, you're one of those messy cooks :P
@Gimby its an apartment :D
Sounds like my dad, whenever he cooks... basically the entire kitchen needs cleaning after.
"Messy", I cook big ;)
When I was living on my own...
09:34
Oh well, I just need to feed me ;)
2 pans, knife and cutting board and a newspaper
:D
@JourneymanGeek I guess that's about all I will need too :)
(newspaper for trash... I'm lazy)
A newspaper is a good trick, I use a bowl though :) I don't even get newspapers anymore.
@JourneymanGeek laundering the bedsheets is work
more work the more sheets and bigged bed you have
09:43
@Gimby Hmm. That's a thing I hadn't thought about... the trash.
And a place to put a water boiler or something for tea/coffee? Those things always eat up way more space than you think...
@Gimby I don't really read em
my parents do :D
If it's not for yourself, it is for guests.
@Gimby Hmm. I think I can have an electric kettle, and just put it in a drawer. If people want coffee, they can have the 'dissolving' kind or bring their own XD
"dissolving kind"
Heretic!
That's almost as bad as coffee with chicory!
09:49
Hey, it's my apartment. I don't need mom over for coffee each day.
Not having a proper coffee maker is the easiest solution :P
(I kid. I don't judge. Even if its instant)
No worries. It's known as a hellish abomination here too :P
@Tinkeringbell making coffee our way...
needs a double boiler, and a little gravity filter
Yeah, that's too much work XD
@JourneymanGeek The only thing you could get at my apartment is tea
but not even that because I only have one mug
09:54
@Magisch I'd settle for water
@Magisch I'm sure I'd have at least 3
andcough
one mug, one glass, one fork, one small spoon, one big spoon. One normal knife, one sharp knife and one plate
so in my culture, there's a tradition of sending off a married daughter with a full set of cutlery...
I do this because it literally forces me to wash it after use or at least before next use
I want at least two of everything so I don't have to do dishes each day XD
makes it impossible for dirty dishes to stack
09:55
my mom basically jokes she'd do it for me, since I a have bunch of unopened things in storage for when I move out
I'm planning to live alone long term
You might think this is extreme but I'm fighting a bitter battle against my own laziness and I like to win a clean apartment
I'm getting a dishwasher, so having enough utensils around to not have to run a cycle each day is a win :)
I have a dishwasher, but I've never used it
I really like not having to do dishes anymore, my skin doesn't react well to the hot water/soap and I hate wearing those rubber gloves too.
@Magisch the mug can be shared. The real problem is your lack of a chasen.
10:01
I don't like sharing my mug
it's my mug, there's a friendly octopus on it
chawan already can be quite expensive. :P
@Magisch oh, you mean the teabag?
@Magisch Mugs are sacred indeed, nobody touches my Gremlins mug.
I need a new nice mug, and then I'll implement that rule too ...
I had one of these and someone here that wasn't me dropped it and broke it. :(
I doubt that anyone would like to use my mug. I almost never wash it :). But what should happen, I only dring black coffee :D
nobody breaks my octopus mug or there will be casualties
the octopus is so friendly
10:15
@tink @mag I have anotherone unused yet, with this nice text on it: What doesn't kill you disapoints me. :D
@Magisch ? the octopus should be bag, not the mug :P More artistic and it works with every mug.
I'm guessing that if I buy a new one, I'm getting one from rumag.
Rob
Rob
Buy a vacuum and use taco bowls
10:17
It's a pity that SE doesn't serve swag anymore :(
and if you feel evil inside... replace the tea in the bags with bonito flakes.
So that the tea becomes dashi.
@BlueSoul seems impractical. I use a tea sieve to brew mint tea a whole can at a time
I consume too much to do a teabag for every cup full
Rob
Rob
Just serve Earl Grey, they won't be back unless they're Stewart or Schwarzenegger.
10:39
That's one for @journey to answer:
@πάνταῥεῖ I have the SU and SO one :D
@πάνταῥεῖ answered
@Rob If I ever drink tea, Earl Grey is my preferred one. I love these bergamotte aromes.
@JourneymanGeek ty
@πάνταῥεῖ "Tea, Earl Grey, Decaf"
Which... makes me wonder...
No decaf of course.
And I rarely dring tea at all.
And if so I would use that yet unused mug I mentioned :D
@πάνταῥεῖ oh that's apparently what old Picard drinks now
but... is it hot? :D
10:45
If tea isn't hot the aromes cannot fly ...
@Magisch welll....
Trilobyte Tea!
I am wating for a cambrian explosion.
10:59
Could someone brew a cup of coffee for @blue please. I'm not privileged to ask smokey unfortunately :(
Jul 24 '14 at 7:44, by SPArchaeologist
@rene I only drink green tea.
That looks like a heavy roast:
Don't delete that too early please :D
You already linked that one before, why twice?
I think he wants that deleted :D
11:14
^ But not too early ;D
poof
Well, that worked somehow :/
It's still medium and not well done as I ordered :D
11:49
And I even didn't have enough time to reach out for my popcorn.
12:02
So rare it still moos.
@JourneymanGeek :D
@JourneymanGeek aren't cows holy to you?
o_O
@Magisch Which is strange cause its not made of cow.
:D
12:49
wooo it's mah birthday
@djsmiley2kTMW 🎂
@djsmiley2kTMW Happy Birthday!
Any fun presents/plans?
13:09
@djsmiley2kTMW happy birthday
@BlueSoul awesome
that's more parrot than cake
13:25
@djsmiley2kTMW happy birthday!
@Gimby I thought the parrot was cake too...
@Tinkeringbell Wait, is it not?
If it's not cake, like Gimby suggests...
probably it is made out of chocolate.
13:31
I'm hoping it is not real otherwise the baker should probably look at their local food safety laws lol
@Rubiksmoose If people are allowed to jump out of cakes, parrots are allowed to sit on top of them :P
well from watching too many baking shows...
probably rice chrispies treats, modelling chocolate and/or an armature :D
@Tinkeringbell hahaha. I generally trust people not to leave ... droppings in my cake. Or I would if I ever would consider such a thing lol
@JourneymanGeek That too! From watching those shows... food safety laws are bogus :P
@Rubiksmoose this is all coming from a rubiscube shaped moose
although you could probably put a rubiksmoose on a cake
13:37
I read an interesting article a few years back criticizing cooking shows (the ones that actually teach you to cook) for failing to observe food safety laws.
@Magisch It would have to be very structurally sound in order to hold this rubiksmoose, in my entirety lol
@Rubiksmoose Yeah, it's a bit of a well known/ common sense fact over here to not believe everything you see on those ;)
@Rubiksmoose E. coli? :P
Humans spread an amazing amount of E. coli, also called the 'poop bacteria' in Dutch.
Ok, serious question
do... you folks have different knives and boards for meat and veggies?
@JourneymanGeek Yes.
At least, we never do veggies on a board after meat.
Sometimes we do veggies first, rinse the board/knife and then do meat, though.
(My local pro supply place actually has colour coded... everything but...)
While E. Coli may answer the question, it is better to flush the toilet and wash your hands. E. Coli contamination contributes to general sickness and makes one not very fun at parties.
13:40
Actually, I suspect that is somewhere we don't want to let Tim Post loose on :D
@JourneymanGeek No, but by that I mean that I don't only have one board that we always use for veggies and one for meat. But if I'm doing both I always separate and/or wash between switching.
@Rubiksmoose ah
(For obvious reasons, we don't have to worry about that, but I was curious)
My wife is vegetarian so that accounts for some amount of that even with cooked meats.
@JourneymanGeek I had a friend way back when whose parents (especially mom) were even worse than mine... I seriously got scolded over there for using the 'pork board' to cut chicken on... :/
13:41
@Tinkeringbell well for some folks who are part time veggie in my culture, they have basically 2 sets of everything :D
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, I know that too.
@Tinkeringbell whoa, that seems like a whole new level of caring.
so I can roughly imagine
just seems difficult
Lived with two vegetarians and a vegan during my first year of university ;)
@Rubiksmoose That whole home situation was a wreck.
It sounds pretty stressful if that was the norm for other things...
13:44
Let's just say we used to hang out at my place :P
I didn't really realize it as a kid... but now that I'm older, I realize how she would flinch if I made noises that were 'too loud' when we were playing, and how her mom would start yelling at us to be quiet instead of asking us to be more quiet/go play outside.
Mom and I had a conversation about her and her parents a few weeks back... I seem to have missed a lot yet still noticed it, as a kid? It's kinda weirding me out to be honest that I have the memories, just never realized the implications of those memories!
@Tinkeringbell Yeesh that sounds ... not ideal.
one of our owners claimed in a meeting that all programming will be done by AI in under 5 years
who programs the AI?
13:47
you could tell everyone trying to stifle their laughter :D
@Magisch That's around the same time that Elon will be sending self driving cars cross country right?
@Magisch Time for some 'expectations management' :P
"Skynet. This is how we get skynet"
@Magisch [AI in the background]: these will be the first to fall
13:49
I'm not convinced you can ever fully automate programming
Hmm. Wasn't there an Asimov story about some AI that did exactly that?
also I'm not worried about job security I could have a new job probably next month if I tried, considering the amount of sheer recruiting spam I get even when trying to actively avoid it
The closest to that was an AI that interpreted the 3 laws to mean humanity as a whole over humans
Something with it improving each iteration of itself, and entropy, and when the whole universe was burned out or something, it finally found a way to reverse entropy and said 'Let there be light'?
@JourneymanGeek That one! Danke schön! :)
recently the company I work for was rearranged in "Competence Centers". I have always pursued a Web Developer - style competence roadmap. Now I ended up in the "Modern Workplace" center
It includes: Sharepoint, Teams, Flow, Desktop apps (both WPF and Universal Apps), office 365 something (because I doubt anyone has a clear view of what to include there) and Power Apps.
You were trying to hold back laughter, I am currently trying to hold back fangs.
Just bite already.
yikes
this here is a small company so we're all just devs
no extra title or anything, even though everyone has some adjacent extra tasks
like I got the (short) GDPR stick, my coworker has to deal with electronic package delivery, the other coworker handles scanner programming and integration, etc.
@Magisch the point isn't extra titles or task. The problem is that the technology groups seems to be based on how Microsoft markets things together instead of trying to go for complementary skill sets.
see putting SharePoint (which is mostly web based) together with.... WPF
14:19
@BlueSoul seems like someone with no clue made the brackets
or in other words, business as usual
@Magisch yep, but with bigger impact than usual on the "quality of life" for many devs.

@JourneymanGeek When I clicked there, I expected to see this:
VAX is a line of computers developed by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in the mid-1970s. The VAX-11/780, introduced on October 25, 1977, was the first of a range of popular and influential computers implementing the VAX instruction set architecture (ISA). A 32-bit system with a complex instruction set computer (CISC) architecture based on DEC's earlier PDP-11, VAX ("virtual address extension") was designed to extend or replace DEC's various Programmed Data Processor (PDP) ISAs. The VAX architecture's primary features were virtual addressing (for example demand paged virtual memory) and its...
@BlueSoul time to start responding to some recruiter spam?
@Magisch yeah.... was thinking to send a CV for a CM position at a company I recently heard about... something like ExchangingStack.... don't really remember the actual name....
14:24
(trad: Shog probably now is angrier than me, so I will try to endure the thing for now)
@BlueSoul I did, twice >_>
shog is probably being harassed by recruiters daily
@Magisch and right now that is probably even a good thing.
Here in this city, you don't exactly have many choices in the first place.
shog working in your team would probably be a perk
I imagine it would make work life pretty enjoyable
that said, I wouldn't want to have poor Shog work with SharePoint.
He already suffered enough having to manage Meta.
No need to add SharePoint on top of that.
14:48
no one should have to deal with shared point of insanity

why does the email need redacting?

New house rule: there shall be no meddling with the internet cables after 5pm.
Maybe I should just ban dad from meddling with them at all, to begin with.
@Tinkeringbell hopefully you dont have cats
@Dragonrage Nope :)
@Tinkeringbell luckily my dad is decently tech savvy, though he still usually asks me about a lot of things if he cant fix it

18:41
Apparently we're getting solar panels and we're too much of a cheapskate to pay for the solar panel people to do the internet cable related stuff.
@πάνταῥεῖ Don't have :)
Poor thing :/
No, that's good ;)
No cats is good.
Cats are good for the soul and reflecting your mind. But well, I have only remote cats at my remote family ;)
Crochet does the same, and it doesn't poop on the carpet ;)
giant rabbits are also nice
also small dogs
the small office dog is still a joy
18:50
@Tinkeringbell Well, cats usually don't poop at the carpet, they're using their loo. But they'll targeting the carpet to puke on instead of the flat and easy to clean floor if they feel treated uncomfortably. :D
Crotchet doesn't bring you back at the floor ;)
