Morning!
morning
7:58 AM
@Mithical so remove the message with the name, not the whole conversation.
8:09 AM
morning and afk as I need to get to work.

@rene It's Friday. Don't be so boring. Did you celebrate Sinterklaas yesterday?
8:46 AM
lol
8:57 AM
Friday.
\p/
9:55 AM
@Tinkeringbell I get to help my dad move today
@Magisch Which is good or bad? I can't figure it out...
It's good because it provides me a plausible excuse not to attend the company christmas party, which I usually need a day or two and a handful of otc pain pills to recover from
Ahhh... Have fun then :)
I'm skipping this year's company party too... on the pretense that if I have to take a train, I can't be in two places at once and I have another one to be already ;)
They're usually not bad, but not great either.
how's things in general at your job?
Same old?
Coding is nice, coworkers are nice too but only because teaching me is the pet promotional project... and managers are still happy I'm female.
This week was a bit chaotic, as I have to coordinate a lot with another team that's upgrading the application I'm still building new functionality for. But we can't stop that for over a year so coordinating it is.
10:09 AM
@Tinkeringbell nope. I'm in for the 50% reduction of Sinterklaas stuff at the AH today.
@Tinkeringbell tbh I would feel quite insulted if someone did that to me
@rene Nice! Get the discounted chocolate coins and marzipan frogs! :D I had a chocolate letter and 50 euro's in my shoe this morning, we watched Paul en Sint on TV yesterday with cake and kruidnoten...
@Magisch Yeah, my feelings aren't exactly happy with all that either.
Keeps nagging.
I indulged yesterday and got some nutella roasted almonds from the christmas market
they're too delicious to eat often
10:24 AM
Oooh, you said the n-word. Now I'm hungry too! :P
breadsticks are also great with nutella ;)
@Tinkeringbell wait, you have been a nice girl last year? My report must have been dismissed by Sint then .... ;)
@rene Oh, this was less then what I got last year, so must be received :P
@Tinkeringbell they have a whole stand with roasted almonds with different coatings. I was at the council office yesterday to request a new passport (mine is expiring) and the smell was just intoxicating
@Magisch I can imagine that, roasted nuts in general have a very pleasant smell already!
they also tasted awesome, but had a metric ton of calories, so I don't think i'll get more
10:35 AM
Oh come on. From what you've said, you can handle a few calories extra ;)
yeah but these push 600kcal on 100g
You can handle another batch before christmas ;)
I might get a selection of the different flavors before the market closes after christmas and eat them through january
Sounds fun too!
I already got some homemade charity cookies to give away as presents. They have a charity drive here where people bake cookies and then volunteers package and sell them with all the proceeds going to the local charity. They're pricy (6.50€ for 200g assorted cookies) though.
also planning on getting some local honey and maybe beeswax candles
10:41 AM
For now, I think all I need to buy this month is a new winter coat and some fancy christmas clothes to appease parents at the christmas dinner... Luckily all that can be done through the internet :D
Rob
Rob
Eat it as is!
what is that

It's nice!

@Tinkeringbell my company's xmas party is fun, they host a small market where you can use credits to haggle together your kerstpakket. There usually is a bookstand, wines, cheese, chocolate, random toys. I usually get a cookbook. Oh, and there's loads of alcohol.
@JAD Sounds fun, at least that way you get something you can actually 'use' or 'like'.
JAD
JAD
yep, and it supports local stores, which is also nice
Afternoon. Just dropping by for a quick question.
It is known if the composition of the two work groups/council/clubs/[insert term here] mentioned in the Loop post will be public or kept secret?
I am not sure if this was mentioned anywhere
I don't think it was, so you could either ask a new question, or find a way to poke a CM about it, or I can ask if I don't forget? :)
will do, thanks
11:18 AM
Looks good :)
11:44 AM
@Hitodama Wasn't mentioned, but I'm guessing the composition (who is on it) of the working groups will be strictly secret and specific feedback of them too
12:14 PM
@Tinkeringbell almost my entire team just doesn't go
we are grumpy :D
@Rob NOM NOM NOM
Love Marizpan
I would've gone to the christmas Friday afternoon drinks at my previous office (great people there)... but that same Friday mom and me are going to be going to a concert, then we have a hotel room and the next day we'll visit a christmas market :|

I guess a grumpy team would not suit me!
right, I should go out get some lunch before it's too late and everywhere is ran out :<
@djsmiley2k-CoW Oh ugh, that a problem there too?! Go, and enjoy!
12:16 PM
Sometimes the part of the office I'm in, we'll go somewhere local for lunch, which is nice
we're all v.techie, most people are so...... unable to converse with 'real people' it's kinda hard ;D
Did you try just quietly sipping a drink or two first? :P
Rob
Rob
@djsmiley2k-CoW The world's record is 9,255 pounds, made with pistachio instead of almond.
Does that still count as marzipan?
I'm both drooling and also I have a premature stomach ache looking at that.
That is not a food item that is an abomination onto the lord
12:26 PM
@Tinkeringbell Size is irrelevant when defining marzipan, so why not?
As for pistachio instead of almond, sure.
There's even marzipan combining them.
@Magisch seems we have a common enemy, then.
Rob
Rob
@Tinkeringbell The first "marzipan" was made from pistachios, it is a thing (according to Google): google.com/search?q=pistachio+marzipan and Guinness allows it - so yes. TIL
Back to the deepest pits of hell where you belong, Mozartkugeln
Rob
Rob
Better than Ambergris.
12:43 PM
@Rob and better than Nattō I guess, but still probably the unholy spawn of an evil Assyrian deity of the underworld
There goes my hunger.
Rob
Rob
Natto seems so much better than Criadillas, though it looks so much worse.
Now that's spawn!
@Hitodama eh. I'd rather have that then marzipan
Marzipan is an unholy abomination of sugar and almond, bringing about the worst qualities of each.
Rob
Rob
We'll juice them with Criadillas for you, and make a smoothie.
I would also rather eat the rotten fermented shark meat that is used like strong cheese then marzipan
Rob
Rob
12:54 PM
Hákarl ?
no idea what it's called, but it's supposedly revolting
@Rob Same here!
@Gimby No worries. Though this room will play havoc with your metabolism, make you hungry when you're not supposed to be, it's also quite good at doing exactly the opposite :P
@Magisch When people read a description of Hákarl they think "that must taste revolting". But if you actually taste some it tastes even worse.
Then how did it survive?!
@Raedwald does it? I've been told it tastes like sharp cheddar
1:03 PM
@Rob There goes my hunger. permanently.
Um. Why? Isn't that just nice, fresh bread?
It looks like some kind of animal product to me...
Rob
Rob
🍡
@Magisch you mean Nattō?
@Tinkeringbell really? It looks like perfectly normal, albeit small, bread to me.
Rob
Rob
1:18 PM
It's nutto
@terdon-stopharmingMonica Read the sentence above it then ;)
@Hitodama yea
@Tinkeringbell Yes, I see what they are now. But they still look like bread to me :/
ok, time for the heavy artillery then
@terdon-stopharmingMonica It's the bumpy bits of what looks like some sort of membrane/skin that stand out to me. Especially in the large image :)
@Hitodama Is that one of those fruits that smell horrible?
@Tinkeringbell yep.
@terdon-stopharmingMonica Nah, not at all!
durians are the tasty but incredibly smelly fruit, right?
1:22 PM
@Magisch yep. And .... not tasty at all.
shrug, I like durians
Rob
Rob
@terdon-stopharmingMonica with veins
I was gonna say... they're really smelly... I've never tasted one but usually smell and taste are aligned so that if you taste something that smells bad, it also smells tastes bad...
@Magisch Self reminder: do not accept any fruit from the cactus
@Catija Are you sure you're awake yet? :P 'that smells bad, it also smells bad...' :P
1:25 PM
I've been to Chengdu a few times. Let's just say that if a stand is selling durian, you can smell it from quite the distance away.
@Tinkeringbell Nope.
@Catija that is probably quite true, especially since part of the flavor you taste is actually you nose smelling.
I can safely say that there is no danger that it will become popular in the west.
Reminder: mouth and nose are both close and connected. Taste and smell aren't actually that separate
@Rob It's so weird. I can't see them as anything but bread. I've eaten little mini-loaves that look exactly like that so many times that I just can't parse them as anything else. Not that I'm complaining.
1:26 PM
@Hitodama I make it a rule not to eat fruits that look threatening.
I actually find that some nice smelling stuff tastes horrible though... And I still think rice waffles stink but they're really nice to eat, especially with peanut butter.
Rob
Rob
Durian is available at most grocery stores, including Wal-Mart, in the west.
(Cooked) Cauliflower. Stinks up the house something fierce, but yum yum yum.
@Rob lucky enough... not here. But you know, maybe it could cover up the smell of rotten fish coming up from many fish sections in local supermarkets
Rob
Rob
1:30 PM
@Gimby So, no coconuts?
@Rob they look threatening?
Lol :)
They do if you look up and see one 8 meters above you...
1:32 PM
@terdon-stopharmingMonica true, true
@Rob totally white people coconut breaking.
;p
I indeed don't buy coconuts in their original threatening form.
We would just hit it with a pestle without the eyepoke
1:36 PM
Yep, that makes a few self-preservation alarms go off.

This just hit HNQ: law.stackexchange.com/questions/47173/… Am I the only one that sees a hidden parallel with SE?
yes and no?
I don't think it's a deliberate poke at SE...
There was one the other day on the workplace, about someone falling foul of a CoC rule they didn't know about at their workplace.
Fact is, many workplaces suck, and are outright illegal.
@Rob Which power does it give?
It has circular patterns instead of the regular spiral ones...

@Hitodama Wikipedia: "... Among some 100 names for the fruit across different regions are the more common English names of great morinda, Indian mulberry, noni, beach mulberry, and cheese fruit. The fresh fruit's strong, vomit-like odor has made it a famine food in most regions, but it remains a staple food among some cultures, and has been used in traditional medicine.".

@Rob -1 horrible cropping :P
Rob
Rob
2:05 PM
Ingenious
@Tinkeringbell Why?
@Catija Part of the hair is missing.
That's actually considered good cropping.
I'm curious why he has blue eyes
Disney magic :)
2:11 PM
Because he's a demigod?
.... trying to remember now if his eyes changed colors when he became human.
@Catija Really? Huh. Didn't know that :)
Well, that's probably not the ... best place to crop the hair... it's too little to be intentional.
He's still a demigod there.
He loses it in the middle of the movie, while he's an adult.
He stops glowing.
Oh, actually, I just realized that image is at the end, isn't it... when he's a full god.
2:13 PM
I haven't watched that movie
not a big movie fan
Just the medium or the attention required?
I have read a book series about low-key olympic dieties though, percy jackson something
@Catija Yeah I really hate it when that happens to me. I think I look way better with the demigod glow.
is it when he confronts the hydra?
@Catija the medium. I read a lot of books and reading a book is always like watching a movie in my head with all the little details and my own pace of storytelling. Movies for me aren't detailed enough and don't get enough plot across and are slow and overladen with action sequences.
2:15 PM
blue too
i have to rewatch it if that's not the case
@Magisch You are watching the wrong movies.
@Catija takes notes for... uhm, science
@Magisch James Bond
@M.A.R. I like science fiction and fantasy, and haven't found a good movie that inherits either genre
2:17 PM
@Catija A very Tarantino thing to do.
@Magisch I... well, have a degree in film, so that probably tells you how I feel about movies... but I agree with this assessment about books (which I also love). Lots of my favorite books wouldn't really make good films because so much happens in a way that's difficult to translate - either the thoughts of the people or narration that explains what's going on for "outsiders" of the culture being depicted.
@Catija Hmm. I'll keep it in mind, though I don't often make photo's and even less portraits ;)
@Magisch I guess you're not a fan of either Blade Runner movie then :)
@M.A.R. I saw the one where the old lady leading MI6 died in the end in cinema and didn't like it
@Magisch But . . . blue eyes!
2:19 PM
It's difficult to do well... and some people can... but, for example, I don't know that I think The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was a great candidate for film because so much of what's happening happens in Salander's head or on her computer screen.
My mind is suddenly blank about movies that faithfully portray the books, but it is true that part of why it's so hard to get right is movies are as apple-y as books are oranges.
@Catija Candidate for not great movie: Douglas Adams. And I think the recent-ish movie just proves it.
@Catija I reckon movies just aren't for me personally. I'm known to absolutely devour books when I get interested, usually I read them in few or one sittings. I like books that have really detailed descriptions of culture and environment too, like worldbuilding. The story itself is almost secondary to the fact that it's like taking a peek into a whole different world and understanding it slowly...
I'm severely pumped for the upcoming Dune movie. I know it is not going to do the book(s) justice but I just don't care, anything Dune is awesome. The Lynch movie, the miniseries... good stuff.
@M.A.R. The Muppets Christmas Carol
2:21 PM
For instance the thing I liked about the Eragon books was the subtle connection level between eragon and his dragon and the superb worldbuilding in the first couple of books. In the movie it was a bunch of nothing with a 1 page fight scene blown up to the conclusion
1966 Grinch is my favorite Christmas movie of all time
@Rubiksmoose I can generally appreciate movie adaptations as movies rather than attempts to make movies of books... but I kinda disagree with you there... a bit... HHG was a radio play first. It didn't have a ton of description and what did exist was presented through the guise of The Guide, a narrator... which does exist in the movie.
@M.A.R. Anything Grinch is good :)
@CptEric oh.... the hydra. The scene they actually censored in Kingdom Hearts. Also the one that originally was identical to the original Disney movie that was left untouched
@Tinkeringbell Whoa wait, that's highly debatable
2:22 PM
maybe I just don't really like the type of storytelling movies are good at
@M.A.R. Too bad, I didn't tag it
In fact, Christmas is the worst (sub-)genre of movies that you could ever think of
I don't know why, but when I was young they used to broadcast a lot of Police Acadamy and Babe during christmas holidays... these days, it's Harry Potter..
I guess writers think "Oh this is Christmas, happy by default" so that affects their judgment or makes them lazy or both and a lot of Christmas movies end up sending the exact opposite messages
2:24 PM
THere is but one chrismas movie trilogy
Die Hard.
@Magisch I haven't done a ton of reading (of books) recently... considering reading is all I do all day... but when I read a lot, I was like that, too. I remember staying up really late, engaged in Memoirs of a Geisha... which has that worldbuilding (just happens to be historically based)...
@Catija That's fair. I'm no longer one that wants or values highly slavish devotion to a source book, but I was disappointed in how HHG came out in movie form. Good point about the narrator. And, as a further counterpoint to me, I guess (though not a movie) I thought the recent Good Omens adaptation was amazing and that had a decent amount of Adams in it.
@JourneymanGeek XD
@Rubiksmoose Adams? In Good Omens?
@M.A.R. But but but... it gave us gems like this one.....
Omens is pratchett and gaiman.
2:25 PM
@Rubiksmoose though I'd argue, good omens was true to the author's intent in quite a few ways. Also that was Prachett and Gaiman
@terdon-stopharmingMonica Errrr... I really need some tea.
@JourneymanGeek Yup that was a complete brain fart!
sigh
@Rubiksmoose I have pretty much every discworld book
wow that's some good shading considering it's 2 colour printing.
2:26 PM
I'd probably be sad there were no more if not for the last one.
@JourneymanGeek I'm getting there at least. I'm getting depressingly close to being out of them :(
@JourneymanGeek I don't like the ones about the witches and the gods, but all the others are hilarious
@Rubiksmoose the last one was a tiffany aching one
@Gimby I love the witches!
@Gimby I loved the witches
2:27 PM
@JourneymanGeek hat full of sky?
did I make that up
XD
@Gimby (but of course it's ok if you don't...)
Love all his work.
Night Watch series is amazing though.
even the ones I don't love as much
2:28 PM
recently I've been reading the three body problem and followups again
@Hitodama I didn't know about that one, but it's obvious, driving a car like that, his red face is in one of the phases of freezing solid.
but best moment, moved me to tears
these books are my jam
Rob
Rob
Mar takes a chance showing up, after what we were talking about ...
@JourneymanGeek Yeah I've read those already.
2:28 PM
dense with information and worldbuilding and so interesting
@Rubiksmoose Angua's kinda my dream girl. Also the person I wish I could threaten most like ;)
THAT'S NOT MY COW!.
@M.A.R. TV Tropes gives a good description.
@Magisch brilliant, isn't it?
@JourneymanGeek Angua is fantastic. I can't help but love Carrot too.
2:29 PM
"THAT! IS!! NOT!!! MY!!!! COW!!!!!" -- Vimes.
@Rubiksmoose Carrot I suspect, is a little too much like how I suspect some people see me
;p
@JourneymanGeek Um. You wish?
:P
@JourneymanGeek I have suspected that you have a birthmark for quite some time. And, I've never mentioned it out of respect, but your protective is quite obvious.
@terdon-stopharmingMonica the other person people seem to equate me to is vetinari
and that's.... too presumptious.
@Rubiksmoose not really! It's a hindrance to not like whole series of Pratchet books. But I can't help it.
2:31 PM
@JourneymanGeek Well. Not particularly less than Carrot.
I didn't like the wizard ones much
Carrot: heir to the throne, genius in disguise, peak physical specimen, decent, generous. You don't think much of yourself, do you? ;P
@terdon-stopharmingMonica Maybe, but Carrot would never want to be king either ;lp
One of of 5 isn't bad.
@JourneymanGeek Ook.
maybe half?
2:32 PM
Right now I'm in the middle of one where Vimes is "vacationing" in his country home.
@Gimby Other than the librarian
Oh god
There you go ;)
that's a good one
@terdon-stopharmingMonica my favorite scifi book series
2:33 PM
@JourneymanGeek I've never really thought about it, but I think they might be my lesser enjoyed ones as well.
the one with the football :/
@JourneymanGeek I'm definitely liking it so far. Especially digging the way they are fleshing out goblins.
I felt like his heart wasn't in it. It was when he first announced he had alzimers
@Magisch Certainly up there, yeah.
@Rubiksmoose I will shut up cause I will ruin it ;)
(its a good book!)
2:35 PM
@JourneymanGeek This still breaks my heart.
@Rubiksmoose that's why the Hat Full of Sky was...
It was the best, and worst, and the last
I think I liked "Moving Pictures" the most. It's not the most funny of the series, but it's just so easy to lose yourself in that book.
@JourneymanGeek Yeah :'(
@Gimby That was a great one.
That and "Going Postal", for similar reasons.
JAD
JAD
@JourneymanGeek yes I am the only one?
2:41 PM
I don't remember the plot of moving pictures
<googles>
@Gimby I loved Going Postal. Just everything about it.
Oh wow, I don't even recall reading it, I thought I'd read everything :O
EXCELLENT.
JAD
JAD
ok then
Oh the moist von lipsig books probably were going to be the next arc
3:00 PM
@Rubiksmoose Good, at least we agree on something :)

Hey guys, the comment on my answer to the post notices blog got me wondering. Am I wrong on my assumptions? meta.stackexchange.com/a/339755/361484
@rene As expected. Totally anti-climactic.
@Luuklag Which comment do you mean? I don't see anything there that looks like a system comment.
Do you mean this?
Unless they just changed the auto-comments, that isn't what an auto comment looks like.
Yep @terdon-stopharmingMonica, that the new auto-comment for sugested dupes
@Luuklag Dropped you a comment there, it seems different indeed :)
they changed with the roll-out of new notices
@Tinkeringbell thanks for looking into it.
3:54 PM
You're welcome :)
I even CV'd one of @rene 's posts as dupe to check the auto message, so I knew it was the new message ;)
Sorry for that Rene ;)
If y'all want something to try out duping... meta.stackexchange.com/q/339762/369802 ?
What do y'all think?
:) Seems the comment has indeed changed then! :)
Have a great weekend everyone.
4:01 PM
You too! Any plans?
Celebrating "Sinterklaas"
Ooh, have fun!
@Luuklag Ah, thanks. I missed that.
(and let me know what you got :) )
Thanks, cya.
4:03 PM
o/
Celebrating Sinterklaas? That was yesterday...
Why couldn't it be Sinterklaas every day?
if every day was friday, would friday be friday
@ErikReinstateMonicA No thanks, I am exhausted from only yesterday entertaining the little ones. Plus the celebration comes with a couple of weeks of mockery and slavery accusations nowadays, enough is enough...
4:46 PM
@user400654 A user in my corner of SE taught us that in Danemark, they call Thursday "Little Friday" :)
I guess you could scale that and make Monday "Tiny-weenie-itsy-bitsy-mini-little-Friday"
@Gimby Oh, but grown-up Sinterklaas can be way more fun than little one's... so a few more days of that could not hurt... Although I would probably run out of words writing poems.
5:29 PM
@curious here we call Thursday "Friday's eve"
@Luuklag np
@fbueckert In what sense? Nothing happened, or nobody showed up?
@Bart you're to quiet.
I'm trying to reinvent myself as the strong silent type. So far I can only do silent.
@Bart Aww... Did anything fun lately?
5:45 PM
@SmokeDetector f
@SmokeDetector gave that an edit but I lack full edit privileges there
@Tinkeringbell It's has been mostly busy lately. Deadlines before Christmas. I need a break :D But we have indoor tennis at the office now, so that's cool
@Bart Yay, free bruises!
@Tinkeringbell haha, it's a soft ball. One of the pleasures of having a motion capture lab is the large space :D
So the office couldn't afford the rent so all employees now gather on a tennis court and connect to the public wifi?
Hahaha, not exactly
5:50 PM
@Bart Ah, that sounds better but I would manage to hurt myself with the racket anyways...
Smash my own shins, that kind of stuff.
@Tinkeringbell same here, except I smash the shins of my co-workers
I did hit a coworker in the face with the ball. So there's that.
You weren't wearing your glasses?
@rene I was ... I may have aimed
5:56 PM
Seen a large uptick in "richcopy360" spam today
@rene Default judgement
Nobody showed.
@Machavity thanks, voted now
@fbueckert :(
@Bart I knew it.
@rene I suppose there's still potential for drama once I get the certificate of judgement, and can enforce it.
@fbueckert if there is something left to enforce over?
6:00 PM
@rene To my knowledge, they still do business in other provinces.
And if I have to, I'll back a truck up to their local place of business and start loading up desks to satisfy it.
I want that on camera ...
Going for the CEO's desk first in that case, for sure.
I get vindictive when trying to be reasonable falls on deaf ears.
hello
@terdon-stopharmingMonica I dunno about Hebrew, but typing anything with an Arabic script is one of the worst methods of torture in hell.
6:13 PM
@Gwideon \o
it's um been awhile
It feels like yesterday.
When that big explosion happened and atoms started to form.
@M.A.R. That sounds like a serious lack of imagination.
your lack of faith is... disturbing
@terdon-stopharmingMonica No really
Anything that has a number, symbol, Arabic and English text is bound to go wrong.
Back when I installed a TeX engine, it took me three hours to get a sentence typed in Persian rendered right.
BBL dinner
6:24 PM
@M.A.R. only five minutes to get it wrong
@M.A.R. And if you think that wrestling with TeX for three hours is one of the worst methods of torture in hell, you are seriously lacking in imagination :)
That said, I feel your pain. I had to typeset a page of Greek in a (long) document which was mostly in English.
