Successful maneuver: dropped a 100 rep bounty on Juan M's answer, which got him over 200 rep on Community Building, which enabled a flair, which I added to the CM list.

5:52 AM
@Mithrandir Yeah. tongue
It should just be a means of entering the new boring info, it should have no bearing on whether you forget it or not
And the novel thing makes no sense. When you have a memory card, YOU decide what to put in
So I'm thinking it was a bit late at night for you as well.
@SonictheWizardWerehog shakes head self-righteously

6:28 AM
@M.A.R.TheChemicalWizard Well, it depends on if it behaves more like a USB port or an SD card. It should definitely act more like the USB port, but having it like the SD card could increase your memory capacity for stuff. So, like, you could upload all of school material and remember it, instead of forgetting most of it immediately because your brain can't handle an information dump like that all at once.
So sure, you could transfer all that information, but without some sort of memory, it'd be useless, because 99% wouldn't be remembered, because it's simply too much.

Simple information storage isn't sufficient though
Imagine you have like a folder of 1TB worth of scientific data in your brain. That does nothing unless you also have the memory of whats in there and how to search it

...this is sounding more and more like it's leading up to a Worldbuilding.SE question.

The ordering of the information and meta-knowledge of its accessibility is just as important as the information itself. So if a brain chip works like a folder you can access like on a PC, it's less useful then you think

So it has to basically be an extension of the memory functions of the brain. The problem then is we start with how does your brain decide what gets stored in that part - especially because the problem of being able to forget stuff is avoided if it's controllable what the brain itself stores there. If it's an extension of the brain that can't forget, that's going to cause some severe psychological problems.
So it could be a read-only memory section, that only takes input from an external source, not the brain itself.
However, then we run into the issue of not being able to alter it based on new information learned through other sources, such as a new discovery you read about, because the brain can't alter that information.
And if the brain can't alter it, then that also opens it up to abuse through brainwashing.
So we come back to being able to forget stuff without losing important information, especially losing information during a mass data transfer.

6:47 AM
afaik the brain is constantly rewriting "re-indexing" memories
and the synapses itself are less like static storage and more like small processors

Make sure it's EMP-proof...

6:59 AM
And waterproof o.o
@Mithrandir That's actually probably easier than one might imagine, but we still don't know enough about the brain to make a factually correct assessment of memory compartmentalization
Jesus that is one LOOONG word
Oh, so SE finally did hide hidden communities in the network profile?

IPS will be added when the time is there. The time to add IPS is not now. I don't see the problem?

It's all pedantic, really.
@Tinkeringbell In March an election that would take place in May was announced, and it was added to the election site fairly quickly

The main question here is why do you care

@SonictheWizardWerehog Yeah, it's pretty pedantic to demand IPS be added to that site and not all other sites that also are on the backlog.

You're right; it doesn't matter now.

uh - which question? The only one I did today was editing out a nsfw gif on a deleted question

@JourneymanGeek Thanks, that's very useful for me, as I have a user script that removes the system's spam masks

ah

Mods don't get spam masks?

Good to know; editing into FAQ.

Not sure how that's useful for anyone to know ._.

Ah, that's better.

@JourneymanGeek maybe it just serves sonic's unquenchable thirst for documentation

10:56 AM
@Magisch too much documentation can be bad too
Documentation has to be relevant, not just detailed
and something like "mods don't have the 10k eyebleach filter" ... well

"The exact algorithm to detect serial voting is..."

@GetAnswerWizard If you actually care, you have a sufficiently large dataset to come up with something closely approximating most relevant factors of the algorhitm easily
And guesstimate the rest

Nope, I'll leave the case to you ;p

@JourneymanGeek What . . . mods don't have the 10k eyebleach filter?

11:06 AM
A lot of stuff on SE works by pseudo secrecy
that is not really secret but not easy access either

Hmm, how can I use that information . . .

Well, in these days, I actually edited in a very small proportion of "factoids" edited into FAQs...I can name at least two users who edited in more

I'm envy to those who have many questions frequently asked :(

Well, according to the tag wiki of , those posts are intended to document the "what, how, where, and when" of how the network works.
Most of my changes to FAQs (if you include anonymous ones) were massive changes explaining things or making grammar changes.
Not just adding in random factoids.

@M.A.R.TheChemicalWizard blame @Oded

11:17 AM
Given that there now exists a user script to remove spam masks, I don't see a reason why the spam mask should be disabled for mods.

11:35 AM
@SonictheWizardWerehog I try to keep site specific userscripts to a minimum
site functionality should not be determined by userscripts

It's not site-specific; it runs on all sites and kicks in as needed
There's also a clear indication ("post content normally hidden, but made visible by...")

You kinda forget something: Do mods want to have a spam mask? If they did, there would likely be some kind of feature request...

@Tinkeringbell that's actually a good question
@SonictheWizardWerehog SE is a site.

@Tinkeringbell Just expressing a personal opinion
I may not see a reason, but maybe others do?

@JourneymanGeek ESL would be my guess.

@fbueckert its clear he's angry about something
But what it has to do with MSE ...
and "I posted something on google groups and it won an unspecified award" ....

@JourneymanGeek Yep. Educated guessing says they invented the predecessor to anchor modelling, someone grabbed the idea and ran with it, and they didn't like it.

or they think they did

And is now going on a tirade about plagiarazation, etc., etc.

But after that, questions are the second best option. Defiantly not answers.

But Notre Dame is on fire

Yeah, I noticed... Crap.

Yup. It's terrible.
IMO it was due to some error by one of the construction workers.

which is sad because part of the reason they were doing stuff was the fire danger

7:42 PM
@TravisJ No one knows yet... :(

Not with certainty, its true. However, in California where we see more fires than most of the rest of the world, we get used to having decent guesses

:(
Notre dame was such a beautiful and old building. I was hoping I'd one day get to see it

I would guess it was from a welder

@TravisJ I heard it's because y'all don't rake... ;)

I heard that windmills cause cancer.
:P

7:44 PM
@TravisJ unlikely? That building has almost zero structural metal

@Magisch You're young. They will rebuild/restore and otherwise you'll have a beautiful ruin to visit ;)
@TravisJ Touché :P
I heard your president knows how to fight fires though!

@Mgetz You would be surprised at the eagerness certain people have with finding places to weld.
@Tinkeringbell Only because his pants are constantly on fire.

@TravisJ Yeah, I guess that needs a helicopter/water drop air bomb to put out :)
I'm about 90% sure you stole "flying water tankers" from the Low Quality Posts queue on Worldbuilding Stack Exchange, and so I think we collectively vote to delete your tweet. My heart goes out to the people of France. https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1117844987293487104

He only mentioned the helicopters because that is the goto first response CA uses for fires.

@TravisJ in a construction site that has 200 year old wooden beams with no nails?

7:46 PM
'stolen from the low quality post queue' snort

(the roof was newer than the building)

@Mgetz Did you see the large amount of metal scaffolding?

@Mgetz yeah I know... D:

@TravisJ yes and I can guarantee EVERY worker was lectured on the fire danger

Okay, so yes, there was a lot of metal.

7:48 PM
@TravisJ technically yes there was... the roof was lead

That there were verbal warnings doesn't really dissuade any of the possibility. I don't think it was on purpose.

was.
There's no roof anymore :(

Watching the spire fall kind of left a darkness in its place. I would be sad, but instead it made me just feel angry.

yep and apparently the bell towers had caught too last I saw
The rose window is a total loss

7:49 PM
@Mgetz Only the north one, please, let me be right?

@TravisJ in france... you might get more intent

honestly, I don't even know who is so retarded to go burn the Notre Dame, so it was most probably an accident, yes

@Mgetz Yeah, old glass and fire doesn't go well, though I can't get any good views of it to prove that.

@Tinkeringbell my understanding is that the stained glass as a whole is melted

It's true, but if it was from welding then it would have been on accident.

7:50 PM
@TravisJ pretty sure any competent welder would have put down mats

This is just my guess. Perhaps with so little left, and the building being so ancient, we will never know.
It also wouldn't have to be from an ember. Welding through material can cause the other side to ignite.

What is the current p-value for a terrorist attack explanation?

@Mgetz :(

I am going to assume that whoever does know isn't going to tell anyone.

@JohnDvorak Haven't seen one yet, hope to keep it that way.

7:53 PM
@JohnDvorak I would put it higher if the scaffolding wasn't there.
And if it didn't happen during work hours

Both good points

@Tinkeringbell the chapel at a minimum is a complete loss, as is probably the altar and choir
The Nave is probably massively damaged

Devastating.

Yeah, probably... I don't think they can save much except the walls. It seems the treasury is also confirmed to be still intact...

so... as I see it, the whole building will collapse D:

7:55 PM
Is there a live video feed?

pretty sure the treasury was fortunately away

The flames look lower now... that probably just means there's not much left to burn.
@JohnDvorak Sure

@JohnDvorak there are a few

I've just found a CBS stream on YouTube
the Dutch stream doesn't seem to be working for me

7:59 PM
Ah, sorry. Thought nos worked worldwide :(
Do you have a link to the CBS one?

Imagine being the worker who set Notre Dame on fire...

Thank you :)
@JohnDvorak I dunno if people would've been still working?
Time the fire started seems outside of 'office hours'...

@JohnDvorak IIRC france has criminal liability for that

@JohnDvorak Yeah... would probably have to relocate. Bora Bora is a French territory

8 mins ago, by Travis J
And if it didn't happen during work hours

8:02 PM
@JohnDvorak 7 pm doesn't seem work hours to me... @TravisJ you know something about French working hours that I don't?

people fainting...

I doubt that I do. Was it after hours for the crew? Trying to see if there was anyone working there.

Hmm... I commented on a question, suggesting that a gold badge user didn't read the question before dupe-hammering to an inappropriate target. My comment magically disappeared. Man, you can flag anything, apparently.

Historical buildings being wrecked is no new scene to people of Tabriz. But it's never easy. :(

8:06 PM
@TravisJ I dunno. I do know there have been reports of no casualties at all, and together with the time, I actually think work might've already stopped at that point. But they also do say the fire started at the roof so...

@canon Comments have been getting deleted in excess since the recent election.

I mean, if your comment was @ the dupe voter, and they read it and disagreed, it is at that point no longer needed, right?

@canon Stuff happens

@M.A.R.TheChemicalWizard I've been watching the Tribune tower get pulled apart here in Chicago. It's a restoration, but it's still unsettling to see the old girl in various states of undignified undress.

even if they agreed it's still no longer needed

8:07 PM
@M.A.R.TheChemicalWizard doesn't matter how "new" the scene is, this is a massive global devastation

You misread my . . . nevermind

I've seen what some... people are doing over there, but it's never the very least more OK

This seems to be the rough angle they're filming it from according to my analysis: google.com/maps/place/Cath%C3%A9drale+Notre-Dame+de+Paris/…

@M.A.R.TheChemicalWizard Sure does.
@TravisJ Shouldn't these rookies be partnered with a jaded veteran who takes the edge off their enthusiasm?

@canon Indeed. Someone should be showing them the ropes.

8:13 PM
Maybe it's the veteran who has some newfound vigor?

Unlikely.
@Tinkeringbell Couldn't find anything about actual work hours for the project. Only found this vague statement
> The fire started at 6:50 p.m. local time, according to city fire officials, and began to quickly spread. It does not look criminal and could be connected to recent restoration work of the church, according to officials. French media quoted the Paris fire brigade saying the fire is "potentially linked" to a 6 million-euro ($6.8 million) renovation project on the church's spire and its 250 tons of lead.

@TravisJ Yeah... There's a lot of 'could possibly be related to's going around, but no talk of humans being involved yet. I sure hope it was just some kind of tool/battery whatever that no human can be blamed for :/

Not even criminal negligence? My best bet so far is criminal negligence.

@TravisJ That sounds like an initial statement to silence media until some real evidence of what occurred surfaces

Shut up. The thing is already burning, we don't need a SmokeDetector anymore!

8:22 PM
Why double reports?
Two instances running again?

!!/alive

@JohnDvorak You doubt me?

yep, fixed :)

@Tinkeringbell According to French law, you can employ a worker for 10 hours without incurring penalty. Considering that this Friday is Good Friday, and that the site would have been shut down until next Tuesday, it would make sense that work would have been going for 10 hours today.

So it started right after work? Negligence seems way more viable now

8:24 PM
There was a service from 18:15 to 19:00 though... I dunno, I'd plan those around work so any noise might not desecrate that... but that might just be me.

maybe some candle fire jumped onto the walls then?
IE, from the mass, not from workers

that's pretty impossible, no?

@JohnDvorak I don't think that's true either, because everyone says the fire started at the roof...

Hmm... gears spinning paper balloon candle fire?

Just stop guessing and wait patiently ;)

8:27 PM
sorry, India is a few thousands of kms away

ah, but wild mass guessing is just such fun

Even more fun when people are definitely obviously going to make terrorist attack assumptions

I really, really don't want to wake up tomorrow and find that this room originated a terrorist attack complot theory!
