@ThomasWard what's up?
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog given a single instance it's highly likely it'll be used elsewhere, and a single sighted occurrence of this type of link is still significant. Idsagree with all of you who has closed it, since this request should be addressed by CMs and admins, not the SE community at large. — Thomas Ward 39 mins ago

Q: Why is LMDDGTFY allowed while LMGTFY is not?

David CostaAfter reading this question on Meta I was wondering if there's a valid reason to not block Let Me DuckDuckGo That For You. I know it's not nearly as famous, but I think the same reasoning about banning LMGTFY applies here, i.e. answering with these kind of links defeats the purpose of building a...

This is... not new...
Also, I think I still have a small pile of LMGTFY stickers. Just need a suitable contest with which to award them
"Top 10 duplicate askers"
Also over at Charcoal, we don't blacklist a domain based on a single TP; I'd expect the same here.
@Shog9 Out of curiosity, why reopen the question?
0
A: Blacklist globally: https://lmddgtfy.net/*

Shog9A quick check suggests maybe 17 extant uses across all of the network. That's not really worth a blacklist - most of the entries will expire before they're ever hit, leaving us back in the same spot in a few months. If it ever becomes a BIG problem anywhere, we can deal with it at that time. ...

kind of an obvious question, that
@Shog9 Is it also an obvious question why it doesn't have a tag?
01:02
kinda feels less important
do I really need to decline a -7 request?
who's gonna look at it & think, "they're clearly considering this request, what with the groundswell of popular support and such"
I'm not averse to blacklisting the site, but... It's unnecessary right now.
If that ever changes, I'll do it without a second thought.
Also, it'd be nice if you quickly addressed this:
Jan 27 at 2:57, by Sonic the Introverted Hedgehog
Is information as to what tags are considered "intrinsic" for each site in the SE network considered to be "private information"? I was about to ask a question asking which tags are considered "intrinsic" for all sites, but I found this post, and it says that the info is only available to moderators, not to the public.
there's nothing particularly sensitive about it
I'm... also not 100% sure that intrinsic tags 'work' the way they're supposed to anymore either though
should probably test that first before bothering to make a list
01:21
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog why do you need to know?
(for that matter why do I need to know?)
@JourneymanGeek To make a list of intrinsic tags accessible to the public?
Erm..
Why do they need to know?
More precisely what's the practical improvement of quality of life revealing that information would bring?

@Shog9 I tested that recently - for example Beer, Wine & Spirits cannot have [beer] tag. Which it should...\
user302202
Also, the site needs some insight...
user302202

Q: What insight are needed?

NicoWhat would be the insights, the Data that Bars, Pubs and other consumption place would lack internally (proper to the business ex: exact spillage, etc..) and consumer wise?

user302202
It's important to have an insight into exact spillage.

@Mrs.Robinson yeah, it works as a blacklist - but the special part about intrinsic tags was supposed to be that they still allowed inbound migrations with the tag, silently stripping it. While blacklisted tags blocked the migration entirely.
I'm... Not sure off-hand if either of those is still true
(they should be, but it ain't exactly the most transparent system)
user302202
@Shog9 Looks like the intrinsic part works: this question got migrated from SO to stats and lost the [statistics] tag. Same for other posts I found with [statistics] migrated:1

Morning!

@YvetteColomb good to see he is doing well. Obviously (naturally) he is good hands. Cheers!
I'm in a train but have the feeling I forgot something. Don't worry, I'm dressed. That was the first thing I checked.
@rene check in? I forgot that yesterday :/
The gates opened so I guess that has been done. Did you get a fine?
06:36
@rene luckily not. I just realized when I tried to check out that I wasn't even checked in.
Lunch? Laptop? Charger?
Lunch is offered by the customer, Laptop: how do you think I'm typing this? Charger: Oh ... phew, it is there.
Morning!
@rene Well, I don't have room to set up a laptop here. So I'm on mobile ;) hmmm... Did you lock the door on the way out? Turned off the stove? Have your access badge?
Morning :)
Morning :)
(hmm, that reminds back then of a user borken bot that sometimes parroting someone's message...)
06:47
@JourneymanGeek what's the practical derioration of QoL being curious would bring? :P
I see no harm revealing that, and people are always curious to know everything ((at) Sonic)
@Bookends careful then ;) broken bots may be suspended until they're fixed ;)
@ɪBᴜɢ well if you are constantly focused on mechanics, you forget the actual purpose of the machine
Alternatively, just post the question on MSE, and providing CW answer for those who want to collaborate on providing intrinsic tags on each site
@JourneymanGeek but they don't necessarily depend on one another, i.e. one can focus on any aspect they like, without knowing about the whole machine
But don't force anyone to collaborate...
06:52
@ɪBᴜɢ which can sometimes affect QOL for others if not for themselves..
@Bookends which would work
You surely don't need to know how to make a good slideshow before you contribute to LibreOffice with your C++ skills
@Tinkeringbell I might have left the dishes.... :( but that is the worst I can think off.
The basis - people are constantly curious
@Bookends It is not shown on the homepage / question list yet?
@rene not too bad then ;)
06:58
nope, but RAM and React are on MSE question list...

@Bookends it is also not in your user profile...
@MEEisJohannGambolputty... oh, I'm not the one who is curious about intrinsic tags though... :(
so I will post it in 6-8 weeks if no one posted it already...
@Bookends ah sorry, misread your first message :)

07:34
@Magisch possibly, go for it. Do you want to link it in here?
@YvetteColomb meta.stackoverflow.com/a/379947 mostly written out of anger and the major talking points are inapplicable after clarification
user310756
@Magisch I handled that. It was rude.
I mean literally had a CM point out it's not nice
I don't want it sitting there and give that impression to users perusing the question
user310756
@Magisch that's fair enough. I am not sure if I will cop flack for deleting it, that will be another meta post ;)
user310756
07:37
At worst if people demand it's restored we can dissociate it from your account.
@YvetteColomb I edited in a passage about how I asked for it to be deleted
user310756
@Magisch I left a comment also. Did you see it?
nice
user310756
@JourneymanGeek if people flag horrible comments, I will delete them. Whether or not it's pointed out by a CM, a mod or another user, it's still not ok to insult and attack people. I tend to take a back seat and not initiate deletion of comments on meta, but rather respond to flags.
@YvetteColomb I'm fine having my name on that, I did write it after all, and any negative inferences people draw about me from it are mine to bear. I'm not fine having that be the first thing people see reading about the situation while tim's (actually relevant) explaination is buried.
user310756
07:40
@Magisch I understood your intention of wanting to delete it. It's popular to hate on SO atm. Particularly on twitter. I really dislike twitter. I'm not sure why I have an account on there truth be told.. Oh yeh, people keep linking tweets into chat rooms
@YvetteColomb feeling older every passing day! :P

user310756
Everybody makes mistakes, everywhere. On SO, if someone makes a mistake it's taken to a very public "forum" for want of a better way of describing it, but the discussion in comments gives it the feel of a forum. Unfortunately people often rule with their hearts on meta, over their heads and outrage can become amplified and what I view as being disproportionate to the topic at hand.
@YvetteColomb I kinda assumed it's the question
@ShadowWizard well, I left my phone and wallet for a quick toilet break though, but that's also not a lifehack answer that you want :/

user310756
I did try to persuade someone to take that discussion specifically to MSE
user310756
goes off to find link
user310756
@Tschallacka sure. I didn't make myself clear. I still think you should take it to MSE. As it's clearly an issue of contention that should be cleared up. Perhaps ask a question? I think it would be helpful. As the discussion about it is hidden behind the answers to these two questions. It would be better to have a discussion specifically about what you're saying. — Yvette Colomb ♦ 11 hours ago
07:47
@YvetteColomb the survey is primarily an SO thing though
I'm quite a bit ashamed of myself after tim's answer yesterday. Re-reading my own that is now deleted I can totally see how it can feel personal to the folks at SE to read something like that. Not like they can publicly call it out either
user310756
@JourneymanGeek the leaking of emails is really a whole network thing
Need to work on not letting anger flow into text more, even if I can make it into a form where it wont be deleted otherwise
user310756
@Magisch you're a good egg :)
user310756
@Magisch as someone who had a problem with that - I've really worked hard at mastering the art of walking away and giving myself time to restore to calm.
07:49
@Magisch that takes time and patience. And anger is sometimes essential to get things done. The balance is tricky.
^ That
Want to borrow a certain co-worker for practice? :P
user310756
Honestly writing when angry is find if you do it in notepad++ and don't post it. Always come back after a sleep or visiting horses
sure is
user310756
@JourneymanGeek anger is very good at fueling the energy for the desire to make changes.
@Bookends yeah it was already mentioned in some answer, not relevant for me since there's risk of getting locked out of the office, so phone is a must.
07:50
And sometimes keeping control and perspective is impossible for even the best of us
user310756
ofc, it's the human condition. We're these two legged animals thrown into this unnatural world
Also, for me phone became like a weapon in army: something you must, at all times, carry with you. :)
user310756
Mastering the use of the feature that got us to the top of the food chain is taking time for us to catch up with (the frontal lobe)
@Tinkeringbell what mess he left for you today to clean up? ;)
@YvetteColomb but it also means you you're not all there. I try to do it sparingly but I've at least once or twice nearly gone 'oh sod off' and dropped a house on someone.
07:52
@YvetteColomb doesn't compile for some reason! :P
@ShadowWizard Nothing (Yet). If I'm correct, branches are going to be merged and code released to production sometime this afternoon though, and I'm a.) wondering if it will, and b.) if anyone will actually communicate with me what is and isn't in production after that.
Metaphorically...
@ShadowWizard there's these little ble reminder fobs. Cost a tenner.
user310756
@JourneymanGeek oh not to act in anger, but it can be the driving force behind wanting change. People who feel helpless or hopeless will often fall into a depression. People who see injustice and want to effect change often feel angry - if they have energy to act on it .. otherwise it can spiral into helplessness or worse apathy.
@ShadowWizard This about your lifehacks question? One addition: Don't put it on a door handle like one of the answers said. One person on the other side not noticing the stall is already taken and moving the handle, and you're replacing your screen.
@Tinkeringbell a) of course not b) see a)
;)
user310756
07:55
I moved my horses recently and I have so much time on my hands I don't know what to do with myself. They have so much pasture, I don't need to feed them. Don't need to get trailer loads of hay. Make up hard feeds and pick up 20-25kg bags of feed
@YvetteColomb so that's... good? :)
@ShadowWizard Probably. Ah well. Today is 'Other project day'. So I'm not going to worry about it too much, I already have the scrum master and product owner up to date again ;)
@Tinkeringbell yeah, that's true, also door handle got more germs than anything else, so not a valid option. lol
user310756
@ShadowWizard really good! It's such a relief. Fresh pasture is the best feed for a horse. It contains omega acids that are lost in the cutting process of making hay.
user310756
they are doing so well. Oh can I spam tavern?
07:57
@ShadowWizard Also true :)
user310756
Also I don't need to go to them every day.
I have myself under control as far as not posting outright hostility, but even outwardly friendly words can cut
user310756
@Tinkeringbell how are you?
user310756
@Magisch I've never seen you be rude
@ShadowWizard You could disinfect your hands before touching the phone. My mom now has to do that (working in care), it makes her skin really bad because of all the washing and disinfectant.
07:58
@YvetteColomb Not directly, but re-read the answer you just deleted. It's still anger speaking, just in a more civil manner
user310756
@Magisch we need more people like you. Reflective.
@JourneymanGeek but how would it work? From what I saw those are things you attach to keys, e.g. this one but I'll just forget my phone with the fob. No? lol
@YvetteColomb spam away! :D
@ShadowWizard or pop it on a hook on your pants
no hook on my pants. :D
If you forget your pants you have bigger problems
08:01
Just ordinary jeans.
No belt loop?
Wait, you mean those hooks for the belt?
Carabineers?
Yup
user310756
I'm still confused though. I was always taught men's clothes had pockets big enough to hold a cell phone :P
user310756
08:02
my young brumby boy - 1 yo
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, but starting to mess with somehow attaching the phone into it with a cord/cable means spending way too much time, and beating the purpose of the quick visit. The only thing I can think of that might work is something magnetic that I just stick my phone on it, and it doesn't fall.
@Tinkeringbell they're big enough, actually too big, that's why the phone can fall. It happened once, so I just always take the phone out since then.
@ShadowWizard How 'bout one of those covers that act like an extra pocket, but fit snugly?
Some of those have belt loops/carabiner hooks as well.
The only exception is skinny jeans, with tight pockets... but I have only couple of those, most of my jeans are "common", or whatever it's called. :)
@ShadowWizard straight?
@YvetteColomb cute! :D
@Tinkeringbell straight jeans?? lol... never heard that term.
@Tinkeringbell hmm? Example? Not sure what it is.

@Journeyman is that your sock here?? You just suggested something like that here, no? lol
08:15
@Shadow it's called a 'phone sock', looks a bit like this
First time I see emphasize with ****4**** asterisks...
To be honest, most life hacks neat tricks don't apply to me, because I'm lazy. lol
But they're still interesting.
@Tinkeringbell what's that? image is too small... is it a wallet for phone?
@Bookends yeah, actually it looks like spam... though no link, so probably not.

@ShadowWizard no no. It's a little Bluetooth thing
@JourneymanGeek oh. Heh... maybe I got confused with a comment I got there.

@Magisch I will be fair. Didn't really feel like most of the people on these post were mad at someone - imho. Unless you qualify legal entities as people. But... sorry for having to point that out, let's drop it here, no need for further discussion since I feel everyone must be pretty bored of those arguments.
I was honestly surprised the legal email address bomb was dropped though
@Bookends I have seen enough to shape my own view, thanks. As I said, it is for the best to drop this now, I think both armies now have enough intel to plan out how to destroy the enemy.
but it's not Advance Wars anymore... it's Battalion Wars!

@ShadowWizard please, don't make me go search for that Don Quixote VS Windmills image again
anyway, in an attempt to change the topic... I am currently thinking of posting a question on Law.
to be specific, something about a certain videogame selling company....
@Derpy SE question inside SE sounds like a bad idea for some reason, but dunno...
@Derpy oh. So that's fine. :)
sin cos tan
Thought it's about that... thing you wanted to drop.
@Bookends 90
Easy.
a company know worldwide to sell open game boxes "because it is more safe against shop lifting"
I think many can guess which company I am talking about.
since that has caused a lot of rants, angry users, internet flame wars and such...
09:35
Not Microsoft
and it has sprout a long list of proved incidents (like shops selling used games as new - hoping no one would notice since the box is open in both cases)
I was wondering if selling unsealed game boxes as new is even legal in most countries.
Not Overwatch
have been reading multiple claims that it is NOT. But never from someone with actual knowledge into laws.
@ShadowWizard could ask on Yahoo answers...
@Derpy actually pretty common...
They used to do that here. Empty Box on display, you would get the box contents at the counter after you paid
Fun part is by not opening the box yourself... Are you liable for the EULA?
@JourneymanGeek not asking for common. Asking for legal. Where I live it is also pretty common for some duty-free shops in airports and such to ask for your fly ticket (probably to try to avoid having local people walk in the station to buy "discounted" stuff). Still, it is illegal and has been reported multiple time to local police dep, who afaik always confirmed that the shop owner had no ground to do that.
So, that company displaying empty, unsealed boxed may as well be something that they do because they are able to slip away with, without any legal ground
09:47
Ah
Hm. Why would it be illegal?
@JourneymanGeek what? the duty free thing or the videogame one?
The video game thing
Clickwrap contracts aside...
@JourneymanGeek don't really know. I have read multiple claims about it, usually paired with not relevant info like "they can sell used stuff as new and you can't know it" to "they can replace the box contents" (like swapping a scratched disk owned by the clerk with the new one you just bought) and such.
I remember seeing at last one game box that had a little line on the back "don't buy this game as new if the seal is broken" or something similar
in the end I don't know.
I realized I read the question very very wrongly... certainly not "game (loot) boxes"...
I've accidentally dragged a window under the task bar instead of resizing it to the bottom left quarter of my screen. Pls send help.

@JohnDvorak resizing the taskbar?
that's why I would like to ask to someone more competent in the field than me

Q: How to move windows that open up offscreen?

Unfortunately, that now places them out of the viewable area of my sc...

Nice! I'd forgotten about the shortcut, thanks.
@Derpy more or less that's the risk
@JohnDvorak don't worry, had to face that problem multiple times in the past, by now I've just bookmarked that page for future reference.
Usually I use alt+space -> move, but it didn't show this time.
10:01
@JourneymanGeek To be fair, I can tell you by personal experience that once they sold a "new" Pokémon game cart to a friend of mine. The "new" game chart had a save with over 24hours of play time on it.
There is (was?) some keys combo that flipped the screen over. My son used to do that all the time to his grandparents when he was little, and they called me every time... lol
@ShadowWizard Ye oldie "Do a barrel roll" key
@ShadowWizard ctrl+alt+arrowkeys
@Magisch yeah probably lol
hmm...
yes, I followed a link which said for better experience start using Meta stack Exchange. So I just clicked that link and couldn't notice it was not stack overflow anymore. — Priyanka.P 3 mins ago
Now where's that link??
(OP came from SO somehow)
Anyway that link should be nuked with fire.
(unless of course someone said that in comment, in which case we should just tell them not to give such "advise")
@JohnDvorak hehe, yup. :)
Chance to get response about bad link just died. :(
10:38
@ShadowWizard sorry
@JourneymanGeek well, we did give them time so chance to get response was low to begin with.
in the meantime... I actually posted the question on Law. Will see if it gets any answer.
As I told, is not like I want to know because I want to sue that reseller or anything.. Just an empty morning and too much curiosity.
@Derpy FWIW, only selling opened games is common practice here as well
every physical retailer does it
@Magisch Where I live, it is only this company doing it. No other shop I know of attempted doing the same
Anyway, as I said in the question, I personally doubt the claims about selling unsealed games being illegal hold any ground.
But since I was curios I asked. Maybe they do in some country.
also, I was thinking about another unrelated question.
this time it is about books. Christmas Carol to be more specific
But I would probably have to check the original book before posting.

@ErikA That's less then I expected. Is that a serving size? Or the entire thing?
Probably blacklisted somewhere.... lol
Perhaps a spam filter :)
I mean... spam.com... really? :D
that made me look for other obvious "bad" words with .com

@ShadowWizard I am starting to wonder if there is some form of accolade awarded for reaching a set amount of "scoldings"
Did you guys by any chance started a "top scolded users" ranking list in the den?
Yep, and I'm supposed to mess up the statistics. So I'll start scolding you for scolding too much?
@Tinkeringbell obligatory "use the beak" reference
@Tinkeringbell a) joking. b) they actually did that in the past (see: "top uncouth users list")
@Derpy I was joking too. I thought that seemed bizarre enough to not need a smileyface :)
And if they did so: Go play in Den, not here.
They could be Denizens of chat then

@Magisch yep :) what's up?
@YvetteColomb The comments underneath tims recent answer are becoming caustic

@ShadowWizard I saw you follow me on twitter. I wish you were on FB still. darn it
I raised a flag already, though
user310756
@Magisch oh -ok ,I'll have a look
14:47
@YvetteColomb yeah, no FB
@YvetteColomb eww FB :(
user310756
hey I gave into fb a long time ago. I kept opening and closing accounts cos I hated it.
Horse pictures can be posted in chat. FB is therefore obsolete
user310756
But it's the best way to keep track of your kids as they get older. And to get pics of them.
user310756
@Magisch horse videos cannot be posted in chat sniff

Let me finish reading the comments under Post's Post.
@YvetteColomb well... when I decide something it's final.
Well, except Twitter, kind of.
(I did have account there in the past and deleted it)
user310756
I hate twitter. I've never warmed to it. Instagram is worse though
But the decision to leave FB wasn't because I did something wrong, but rather because they did something wrong. They're evil.
user310756
I've kept this twitter account open the longest. I've given in to it, much like fb
I dislike how twitter tends towards condensing everything - even complex issues - into soundbites and "gotcha!" moments
user310756
14:51
@ShadowWizard ??
It lessens the value of societal discourse significantly
I mean, like a bad evil, doing harm on purpose. So, I don't want anything to do with such a thing.
@YvetteColomb sharing people private info with spammers, affecting election results, etc.
Yeah FB with their FB news setup facilitating genocide in several countries is pretty harrowing.
@Magisch Because that's not really what Twitter is for. I like using it for fun facts, pictures and small pleasantry/joke exchanges.
Also their literal studies on how to coax people into voting differently
14:53
People just misuse Twitter like they sometimes misuse SE ;)

@ShadowWizard really? you're saying social media is used in a corrupt manner to sway public opinion and gather and sell people's private information?
Facebook is the ultimate evil: they pretend to be all flowers and dancing cats, while they plot behind the scenes how to best sell your private information and make most money from dark companies buying that info.
user310756
@ShadowWizard no way! I can't believe it! faux horror
lol
And they call those dark companies/spammers "consultants". lol

I told you I did a research paper on online social media security concerns - which includes fake news to quote a dear blonde wig wearing, orange skinned friend of mine

whenever there's a buck in it, there's room for corruption. In fact whenever there's power in it the same
user310756
I grow tired of warning people about social media
@YvetteColomb yes, it's kind of proven.
FB admitted they did it.
Twitter is full of bots :)
user310756
the ads on fb are out of hand. But I have a lot of friends I stay in touch with via fb, and the privacy is better than twitter. Every thing is public on twitter. I can't cope with that (she says posting in a public room)
@YvetteColomb heh. FB is too much noise

@YvetteColomb no, twitter have private messages too. (aka DM's)
Millennials are using Instagram for everything now...
I just follow folks I have an interest in and it's a quick thing to skim
user310756
@ShadowWizard I'm being facetious. Ofc I know it. I've studied and researched it. But I tolerate it, as I tolerate Google products and now twitter it seems
@Bookends and kill everything else
user310756
@JourneymanGeek a lot
user310756

@Bookends all online social media is full of fake accounts
@YvetteColomb it's ok. Google kills more products than millennials
@YvetteColomb sure, but Google is a must, as is WhatsApp... FB was just extra. So I got rid of that extra as a useless attempt to fight evil. :)
@ShadowWizard I would dearly love to dump WhatsApp
user310756
@ShadowWizard oh I hate whatsapp. I only just reinstalled messenger, because if my horses mind you
Sadly seems impossible
