Heh, someone's late nomination on TWP, bringing into 4 candidates for 1 position~

A: What actions have been taken after the data leak reported on Feb 5 2019?

Tim PostI'm feeling a whole lot of hate here. I'm not speaking metaphorically, I honestly feel like you and other people in comments really loathe and hate me. And not just the company, me in particular. That's how I feel, and I can only suggest you think about how vehemently you bang on text boxes goin...

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog so... turns out "ability to create sockpuppets" isn't a very good indicator of future success for a site?
Or perhaps the votes weren't really "invalidated" so much as they attracted downvotes...?
@Shog9 A quick rep history check would verify that...but Area 51 rep isn't updated automatically
Problem for most of these proposals - and their eventual sites - is that there just aren't that many good questions.
If you can replace an eventual Q&A site with a nicely curated FAQ, it's probably better off being a FAQ
20:01
> You need at least 150 reputation to vote
Aaagh, I forgot about that! time to sleep
20:15
heh. it'd been some time since I'd rub people on meta sufficiently bad for them to downvote me on main. I guess I'm doing something right..
it's hot heated, so someone made a friend :)

...things I don't like saying, episode 45: "OK Google, set an alarm for 5:55AM."
Having to wake up before 9AM should be illegal
@Mithrandir 'cause you don't like to tell Google to set your alarms, because of the hour of the alarm, because of both, or because of something else entirely? :P
@JNat The time :P
tomorrow's adventures: me, 10 other teenagers, 20 adults, and 1,000 8th graders on a mountain. should be fun...
presumably if you fall then you have a pile of 8th graders to cushion your landing?
21:12
I mean, hopefully it's fun for some of all those people, no? :P

Freelancing nomination period extended for another week of exercise in futility
Oh, I can edit some posts to get to 300 rep ...
@Mrs.Robinson No? It shows as being in the election period despite no moderator candidates. I checked meta and found no post mentioning that.
@Bookends I'm a tiny bit miffed with that anyhow
In my semi professional non lawyer opinion that was not a gdpr breach
user302202
nomination period began: Feb 11 at 20:00
election began: 1 hour ago
election ends: in 8 days
user302202
21:33
The inconsistency gives away it's the extended period.
@Mrs.Robinson That's the election phase; it's not open for nominations
@Mrs.Robinson Click on the "nominations" tab; it says the election is in the "election" phase
user302202
Got it, you're right.
user302202
Not extended yet. I suppose it will be soon.
@Mithrandir Those supervision ratios sound a little bit low...
@ArtOfCode okay, fine, add another 30 teenagers in charge of the kids directly, with us + the adults in charge of them
Adults > me and my group > counselors > kids
I was counting the counselors as kids :p
user302202
21:38
20 supervise 11 supervise 30 supervise 1000...
More or less, yes. All numbers approximate.
user302202
21:49
Yes, and only $4.88/yr from namecheap

Rob
They'll be approximate when you return.
user302202
Hopefully the kids are branded before being put out to pasture on a mountain.
@Mithrandir that makes slightly more sense
@Shog9 Hi as you may know moderators on SO use one of our bots to search for plagiarism chat.stackoverflow.com/transcript/111347?m=45384467#45384467 it uses google to search for similar answers (max 100 search/day free quota, so very little fun), we have problem using the api api.stackexchange.com/docs/excerpt-search since you can't search for code or comments in code, how do you feel about scraping SO to executed this search? or is this a thing I should ask on meta?
user302202
Why not download SO content using the API?
21:52
if you tell me how that is done, sure :D
user302202
one request to /questions = 100 questions, with all answers included.
user302202
10000 requests per day
@Mrs.Robinson whole point of API is in order to not scrape.
Scraping is hard to limit or control.
user302202
Reworded.
I know about the api, check the links, the fact is that the search in api does not work the same as search on main site, you can test by searching for code in an answer on your mobile phone using the stack app
21:54
@Mrs.Robinson you mean the data dump?
user302202
Yes, I meant get the content via the API, then search your local copy.
Rob
Rob
@PetterFriberg A quick answer is here: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/16827/…
user302202
Data dump is old and awkward to use though.
you realise how much stuff there is on SO, right?
50 million or so posts
you can only get 1 million max per day
2 million if you can persuade the team to double your quota
user302202
17M questions (each question comes with all answers), 17 days.
21:56
and then you have to keep it updated with new posts and edits and all the other little changes...
it's not a viable strategy for a bot like that
oh, and you also need the raw disk space to store it all
Art, actually we tried to download it... but it filled our server, since community project (limited resources) we prefer not to keep a copy of SO on our servers.
it's unfortunate that they do not have same search in api as on main.
@ShadowWizard \o nice to see you, it was some time ago, but I guess that's my fault not passing through Tavern enough :)

@PetterFriberg initial thought is: you're gonna have to be really careful not to get rate-limited
but still quicker then mods searching by hand.. I'm mostly concerned about SE rules.
If you give go ahead to test we will test some with my account and/or this stackoverflow.com/users/7418352/guttenberg, we will just slow down calls to try to avoid rate limit.
No need for quick response, feel free to speak with the mod team on SO, if it's useful we will do it, if not not.
@PetterFriberg how many searches / day do you need for this to be useful?
We will only use when moderators decide to check a user, hence around 25-100 answers depending on user, currently Martjin and Cody is running it but we are always out of quota 100/day.
So basically 25-100 calls for each user that a moderator like to check
Now they check like 4 per day (with no quota) if it works maybe more, you have more insights then I in this problem.
If you set a maximum level we can implement that.
For now I'm mostly looking for an "your ok to test" if I see troubles later I may shut it down or an "Please do not scrape, find another way"
user310756

\o Yvette
@PetterFriberg wait, so is this running as the moderator?
or is it running as a generic bot user and searching at the request of a moderator?
'cause... If it's the former... Go nuts.
user310756
@Magisch @ShadowWizard @rene this is that baby horse - she is 8 months
user310756
@PetterFriberg \o
Is this Guttenberg you're talking about?
22:30
@Shog9 it's running on the Guttenberg account with this stackapp post, but the command to check a single user is sent by a moderator
ok
honestly... if you're doing a few hundred searches a day at the request of mods, this really shouldn't be an issue; if it ever is, I'll let you know.
If you get to the point where you need to do thousands of searches, we'll need to figure something else out
ok thanks, we will test some then, I will keep you updated.
if you start getting CAPTCHAs, you've searched too fast ;-)
lol I guess we will then have to figure out how to solve them
if you get 429's, you searched way too fast
22:37
What about 88s?
then you searched crazy fast
No, it's when you end up in the future. :P

Q: Election phase started with no candidates

gparyaniI just noticed that the 2019 pro-tem election moved to the Election phase with no candidates nominating. Which means it's impossible to vote. I thought that if the nomination phase of an election finishes with no candidates nominating, it's supposed to be extended. But why didn't that happen? I...

Should have waited till the end of elections. Jon would have posted a "Welcome your new moderators" meta without any new moderators
@BhargavRao It's confusing. It prompts you to vote but you can't.
So it's a bug.
Nvm. You didn't get the joke.
23:41
you ruined it
