@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog @SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog at the moment the mods consensus is that in most cases, we are not sure what the appropriate action is, and will defer to the CMs
Until such a point where we are confident it's the right acton
So unfortunately you will have to wait in those cases
@JourneymanGeek You sure the CMs know to handle the flags? I think they may be waiting on the mods to handle the flags, and it might be a deadlock.
Nope.
@Catija You mean, the CMs didn't know to handle the flags, or it's not a deadlock?
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog we communicate with the CMs a fair bit
One of the cases is pretty blatant, though: it's an FR asking for a feature that has already been implemented.
01:15
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog it's not a deadlock, we're not expecting them to handle the flags, we just haven't had time.
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog we're (amusingly) here to help with the community, not the mechanics
@JourneymanGeek Ah, I thought all the private rooms here were staff-only.
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog nope
Not sure if there's any here be dragons rooms. Never pried deeply
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog Staff rooms are special. Private rooms generally work the same way here as on the other two servers.
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog given that I'm in one... :P
01:29
AH, I forgot about the room for Tavern ROs, which used to be gallery but has since been made private by a CM.
There may be some really old private rooms from the time Trilogy mods moderated this site

Rob
He is a nuisance.
If a mod isn't living up to standards there's processes other than public pillory to deal with it
@Rob dosen't matter. We don't talk about people behind their back
Rob
Rob
I've said it directly.
As have dozens of people, including the Mods, over at Quantum Computing.
@Rob dosen't matter. We don't do personal attacks. If you have a problem with decisions, feedback on meta. If you think a mod is doing a terrible job, use contact us.
This isn't the appropriate way to deal with it.
02:43
@Rob I saw a problem with specific chat behavior on chat. I mentioned it in the hopes of seeing improvement. You're comparing apples and pandamelons
Also notice I offered to help fix the issue
For issues on chat, I deal with it on chat. As I have here
@Rob If you have a specific issue with a specific mod, bring it up on their meta, along with evidence.
I actually recommend contact us - in my experience unless it's a super unpopular mod, it's going to be terribly received
And a CM will probably look at it and contact the mod if needed
Hm. Edits go wonky here
Are you on mobile?
03:04
Yeah
My laptop has issues on wifi here
I should have brought my repeater ._.
03:15
Yeah, it's not here, its mobile. Happens occasionally.
03:46
Whoa, Cody Gray is back! This pleases me immensely. :)
@MarkAmery .... It is spec-tacular indeed
Aren't SO mods expected to spend at least one hour every day handling flags?
Nope
It's very much best effort. There is no formal obligation, and while it's recommended you spend half an hour a day modding - that real life can get in the way is understood
04:16
Yes, I know that mods can mark themselves as "inactive" if they plan to take a long break.
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog These are volunteer positions. While we do have more expectations of SO moderators than the general mod teams, this is really only held to if there's a shortage of hands. All moderators are allowed to take time off, we generally hope they'll tell us when they do, though, and have tools for that. If there's an overabundance of work and absent seats, that's a problem. If everything's getting handled and people feel comfortably busy, it's not.
True. I often see my mod flags on SO get handled very quickly.

@Bookends I believe it's by the moderator:

Thanks!
06:40
@Bookends there's a check mark for clearing them
Alternatively we can do it manually. There's a human (or other organic sopont) making the decision either way
@JourneymanGeek Curious question: if you use that checkbox, are the comment deletions attributed to you, or to the Community user?
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog I never really checked
Attributed to the mod, thought this isn't visible to most users I suppose.
@JourneymanGeek thanks for clarification
@JourneymanGeek Your "thought" confused me like hell the other day. Isn't it actually extra effort to type a "t"?
06:54
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ spell check is a pickle mistreated.
hmm, that makes this feature a bit complex since the system cannot differentiate between normal comments deletion or moved to chat (both remove pending inbox notification), while mod's comment on deleted post retains the notification. Well, might be trivial to fix thought...
(my train of though is far away)
@Bookends well, in theory migration to chat is a one time action so you would presumably run a check once on migration for pings
@Bookends "though" goddammit >.>
Inb4 someone makes the through thorough thought though joke.

07:19
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ it's viral
Or people just blindly count on the spell check/auto complete which prefer thought over though since it's a more popular word. (1,980,000,000 vs. 1,950,000,000 Google results.)

07:42
David is the new Jeff though.
Not convinced
Now I have a mental image of shabbily well dressed mobsters code named after their drinks ...
@ShadowWizard kinda sorta
Okay, I'll tell a story and you all get to guess who Nespresso is: instead of cherry-picking code from one branch to another (which we don't want anymore) this person has now thought up a way to avoid having to do that: By not picking out what you want to keep, but by removing everything you don't want from 1 branch, then merge that branch into the next release branch, then put everything you don't want back into the development branch...
@JourneymanGeek You have two options: Take the blue drink, or the red drink.
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ or mix it to get purple
07:43
That's not how drinks work
They always turn into a gross muddy brown.
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ 'this is Kruig, Nespresso, aeropress and filter.... '
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ sure it is, people always mix drinks
This person is also known from the now famous 'Is this code, which has your picture and name on it in GitLab, and a reference to a story on JIRA that has your picture and name on it, yours?'
@Tinkeringbell sounds like a super smart and sharp person, who is fun to work with. :P
@Tinkeringbell 'does it have a pointy beard? Then it's my evil twin'
07:44
Pointy person
@ShadowWizard David is an awesome dude but I don't think SO needs another Jeff.
Jeff needs another SO?
That's discourse.
@ShadowWizard Don't start.
@Tinkeringbell lol, I'm innocent. I'm using your avatar in both gitlab and JIRA.
07:46
He's too used to working alone to ever properly function in a team, as far as I'm aware :)
@Tinkeringbell Einstein locked himself up in a room before shaking the world with a deceivingly simple formula.
So... Basically as a small startup with a super focused market, SO (when it was SO) was full of generalists
Our first CMs were awesome folks who could do it all...
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Perhaps. But that was Einstein. He's no Einstein :P
@Tinkeringbell Well then he'd shake the world back?
We'd go back to burning witches and feudalism.
By we I mean you.
Sometimes that seems like a more worthwhile effort than trying to communicate with nespresso
07:49
But as time went on, a lot of good folks specialised in things.

Hello, not sure I'm asking in the right place, but I will try. A comment I made on SKepticsSE, where I simply asked another user about his opinion on a certain subject, got deleted by an administrator, following reason given "Personal opinions are not allowed here". Isn't this a bit exaggerated, to say the least? Thanks for any feedback.
Hey
Comments are meant to be ephemeral and may ultimately get deleted for whatever reason. There isn't such a high bar for deleting comments
Of course, this doesn't mean mods can go nuts with the deletions, but my point is there doesn't usually need to be such a strong case for removing a comment for it to happen
That said, some sites also have a problem with lots of problematic comments, usually noisy, chatty or opinionated, so they establish policies and per-site culture on dealing with them more aggressively.
@rene Shog. FYI I'm not the one who came up with that.
So a singled out comment might have nothing obviously wrong with it, but if it fits a pattern seen in too many unuseful comments that have previously been moderated, then it might get deleted.
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog monolog wrecker
@Adrenaxus ^
Also, you might look around a bit on Skeptics meta to find said policy meta posts on it, but I wouldn't recommend starting a thread on why your comment was deleted.
Thank you M.A.R. for the clarifications. I understand what you are saying and it makes sense. I guess I was a bit shocked about a rule prohibiting personal opinions, on a SKeptic forum... but ok. Thanks again.
The reaction to such posts usually mostly boils down to "why is it such a big deal?"
08:06
@Adrenaxus skeptics is one of those sites with slightly strict rules cause of potentially controversial subjects
@Adrenaxus Well, the ideal Q/A on Stack Exchange is mostly devoid of personal opinions, and that's how these sites differ from forums in the traditional sense of the word.
@JourneymanGeek Throw your spellchecker in the ocean. I know you can do it, it's like besides your ear.
The best I get is a "gulf" and it's way down
@JourneymanGeek Well, I wouldn't call prohibiting users from asking other users their opinion "slightly strict" but ok ;)
08:10
@Adrenaxus well - the Hardline opinion is comments are meant just for clarifications. The softer line is somewhere like 'if it's not too long and vaguely on topic it can go later
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Thanks for the suggestion. Definetely won't post there :)
To the point where they experimented with renaming comments on a few sites
@Adrenaxus skeptics.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/3858/… is what I find with a brief glance
Haven't thoroughly read it myself, but I potentially agree with the premise: Why should that opinion matter in the first place?
Your opinion doesn't matter. What do you factually think about that?
-5
Q: Are opinions not welcome on [skeptics], or only unpopular (ironically, skeptical) opinions?

user35358 I don't see any reason to be skeptical of any exaggeration, so I'd say "no, it hasn't been exaggerated". from Has the Holocaust been exaggerated? Apparently that sort of statement is worth +30 around here. Ironically, this so-called "skeptics" stackexchange: 1. Provides "answers" (that a...

08:13
@Adrenaxus Sometimes the OP formulates the question to validate their bias, but even then, I'm not sure asking if they're being biased will help anything
hmm... maybe wrong meta reference...
@Bookends that example ....
Quite frankly Holocaust denial is right down there with moon landing denial as far as wilful delusion goes as far as I am concerned
My earth is hexagonal though...
Thanks, although it had nothing to to with political opinions. I do understand that political opinions are discouraged. I simply asked another user about his opinion on Plato's Timaeus Dialog. Having said that, I wont engage in discussions there anymore, now that I know that personal opinions are not allowed. I think personal opinions are really important, especially if you want to be skeptic.
@Adrenaxus that's what chat is for
08:16
@Bookends I keep running on my Earth, it's round and it can't be stationary
@Bookends and a spiderweb. And when the end times come.....
@JourneymanGeek Yes I discovered chat just now, will visit you pals more often, you seem like a decent bunch of ppl :)
@Adrenaxus Despite the obvious human element, a question and its answer should look more like a dictionary entry. Of course opinionated and chatty comments get removed but it's not because they're bad or something, just that that's not where they should be.
I am NOT decent.
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ meToo
More like deeuro.
08:19
@JourneymanGeek it needs someone who can make things happen.
EU is pulling Zarif et al.'s legs that there's gonna be a separate route for economic trade
Harharhar. Funny.
@ShadowWizard actually kinda. But I think the structure they are trying to put in in the long term can help
@Bookends Doing philosophy is so uncouth
You're lucky Derpy is definitely asleep and not playing some weird random video game only to come to chat to rant about its sequel or prequel.
I mean I disagree on a few critical things but ;p
@ShadowWizard there's a big difference from SE in Jeff's reign and what it is now
08:23
@JourneymanGeek that's true
And of course that intervening period
"reign" you make it sound like he declined popular feature requests despite getting 200 downvotes on his response.
I mean Jeff was the original CM in Chief, PM and guiding light of what happened.
I don't think it would work now
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ that's kinda what I meant.
@JourneymanGeek Well we could use someone with one of those big party flashlights
But the codebase is bigger, there's kinda 3 products to do with QA ...
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I'll try to include that the next time I apply to be a CM
08:26
A CM with an apostrophe issue . . . the horror
Oh I'm kidding. You wouldn't be too terrible.
High praise, that is.
Terrier, not terrible
It puts the 0 in 0scars.
@ShadowWizard well that's an interesting point - basically there's a load of technical and cultural debt.
And rather than having a 'face man' one of the big challenges SO has is actually getting folks able to tackle meta.
It's nice having CMs as a bridge but it feels like we're too scary to everyone else.
Catija is doing well with being responsive on some smaller meta sites :)
08:36

Apparently Slack has 800 employees, and SE has... 250+ employees?
Well, it's 243... unless some employees don't have SE account at all
@Bookends that's possible
Office staff. Chefs...
What, they don't have accounts on Seasoned Advice!?
Apparently not
And I wonder what the breakdown is on slack.
@JourneymanGeek they tried, but then the users of the site went on strike, saying that "burinating spam" doesn't qualify as outdoor cooking
11:21
burinating is... too typo-phobic...
Those two don't have accounts afaik.
Not sure if they're still around but yeah.
@JourneymanGeek what breakdown?
And out of 250, how many codes...?
@JourneymanGeek probably not, the twitter account is nuked. :(
11:28
If SE only has... 3-40? software engineers, then maybe it's hard to implement all popular feature requests...
@Bookends yup
But SE had that public, slack does not
Slacks probably lighter on infra folks though
@Bookends also until recently q&a wasn't the main product
how about... comment (2nd-class citizen)... or chat (3rd-class citizen)? ;p
Hm. Yup
But also what drives priorities
implementing a feature request to migrate 2nd-class citizens to 3rd-class citizen is...
So... Management major hat firmly on
There was, to me a few issues with careers as the main revenue stream. Basically it's a saturated market with many strong incumbents. And no ongoing revenue stream
The nice thing with what SE does now is that no one else does Q&A better - there's no real competition in that space. Of course there comes the fun part of balancing new users and retaining veteran users
puts hat away
11:42
@JourneymanGeek competition in Q/A isn't magically impossible though
Myspace et al have stories about "there's no real competition in that space" and then 2 years later they were literally supplanted.
I can't answer because I don't know other Q&A sites out there (well, maybe other than Yahoo! Answers)
Unity Answers? Physics Overflow? MSDN? Google Groups? Quora? Reddit???

Q: Should we invite hurting users to come discuss it in chat?

avazulaTrigger warning: depression, suicide, anxiety What brings me to ask this question today is because I recently created a Stack Exchange proposal which scope may partially overlap the IPS scope. One of the proposal's followers raised that concern and I was dazzled by that answer to the question:...

Might need to tread carefully
How common does it happen on IPS?
@Bookends Just posted an answer there... We had those kind of discussions before ;)
13:32
I agree with you though; even people that identify with severe problems need professional help. On the interwebz we don't even know if they identify with it!
I am seriously thinking about murdering time. Provide some emotional support pls kthxbye.
Speaking of which...is there a special procedure mods have to follow if one makes a suicide threat in a post?
@Bookends I just realized I can pronounce your name "And the route".
91
A: What's the official SE response to serious mentions of suicide or self-harm in posts?

ShokhetScroll down for updated, ready-to-use comments. I think Shog9's answer to the Meta Software Engineering question is good enough: I hate to sound callous about this, but... This isn't a support group; y'all probably aren't trained to deal with the outpouring of grief and despair of someon...

Maybe I have thought too far then, until "we might help emotionally, but we can't even guarantee their physical security! If you said 1 wrong word that might trigger their traumatic memory, would you be responsible if they suddenly not responding to you anymore?"
okay, that's too dark...
13:37
@Tinkeringbell Those are normal user actions. I'm asking if a moderator has to do anything specifically. For example, on Wikipedia, there is a special "emergency" email address one can use to contact them about such things.
@Bookends You're the hero we deserve, but not the one we need right now.
Yeah, I'm dark, but also yellow 😶
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog Call CMs? Moderators are basically monkeys with g . . . normal random people with special powers.
Also the post did mention what mods can do
Halt all activity with locks and pinging CMs.
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ dogs and birds
@Bookends The only color I hate more than dark yellow is blinding pink.
@JourneymanGeek You can both be a dog and a monkey
BELIEVE
NEVER SAY NEVER
DON'T BE EVIL
13:41
Catdog.
Wait, that one is different
More or less - there's a few factors here. Mods shouldn't have to go through the mental anguish and stress of dealing with these situations
Our ability to do things is limited
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog we ping a CM
@JourneymanGeek I just said BELIEVE like two minutes ago
We also contact them in other ways if needed
You're close enough, if you wave your hand Tim probably can see it
13:43
Naw, not really
👋👋👋👋👋👋
And I think we're ignoring a major point: What the heck can a random person do in such situations, mod or not?
@Bookends Good idea. It's actually probably more efficient than two, four or eight hands
Six is always magical. Proof: honeycomb
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Well, I don't know about there, but over here you have suicide helplines/chats that are mainly staffed with random person volunteers... Though they had a bit of training on how to handle, probably.
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ exactly
And government is also doing awareness things that say you as a random person can make a difference.
13:46
@Tinkeringbell There exists one in the United States as well
And that's why mods are not expected to deal with it
Now why didn't humans come up with six hands? Vertebrates are dumb
so apparently there is something a random person can do, though I'm not even sure what.
And if one doesn't exist in your country, you could just make an international call to one that does
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog of course assuming said suicidal person has the spoons
13:47
@Tinkeringbell Regardless of training, when you volunteer there, you expect to be in touch with such people, and when you volunteer here, the biggest mental anguish you should be seeing is WHY THEY DOWNRATE.
That makes all the difference
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Not entirely true :P I knew volunteering on IPS would come with a lot more than just 'Why Downvotes?!'
@Tinkeringbell "Why close votes?!1!"? That's much worse
Also the free speech 'enthusiasts'. Censorship Exchange
That one is hard.
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ eh. There's a bit more lol
@JourneymanGeek You get the point. Also you have a wrong perspective on the hate mail from the US marine. Feel the love
13:54
Also, latest impression of IPS.SE:
> Our Interpersonal Skills site was created with a belief that maybe there were enough questions in this space to be tackled with an almost academic-like approach — but even there, the community is struggling to make this work in our format. - How should we focus the Neurodiversity proposal to set it apart from existing stacks?
@Bookends You seem to be trying to improve my mood today :P
struggling isn't the same as failing, luckily :)
My avatar is happy at least
I'm pushing millimeters in TeX based report templating
I must admit I like looking at it, it cheers me up :)
@Magisch Oh that brings back some nightmares.
13:57
@Tinkeringbell Try this:
Engineered to relieve stress
@Tinkeringbell When everything else is struggling, I picture a guy that's about to drown in the ocean, but when an SE site is struggling, I picture an active meta with people that care, so not sure it's a negative thing
Granted, sometimes they chase their own tails
But parrots are smarter than dogs.
Proven by science.
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Lies! posted a question on Skeptics.SE
The alternative is the apathetic look of a site's regulars at a mess that's supposed to be neatly categorized. (Yeah I'm talking about meta.ELL, and yeah, I'm biased)
@Bookends If you include Trump it'll hit HNQ
"Did Donald Trump claim parrots are smarter than dogs?"
Or, hmm, "which one is smarter, Trump's dog or Trump's parrot?"
Hey, no ruining parrots with Trump
Parrots are fun and apolitical.
With a link to democrats bashing Trump's parrot's influence in his decision making
@Tinkeringbell There's no such thing.
14:02
@Tinkeringbell Polly Tinkeringbell wants a cracker government by and for the people
... why did I suddenly imagine a parrot sitting on the White House ._.
You're either alt-right, or alt-left. No shift keys.
@Magisch Tinkeringbell doesn't really care about the government :P
@Bookends That's how the presidents function about half of their decisions
Now this is a smashing thread:

Q: Add a button to scroll me to my answer if I navigate to a question that I have already answered

YashIf I open a question that I have already answered, I think it is better to show some icon or link telling me something like, "You have posted an answer to this question." This will scroll me directly to my answer and let me reuse that information. For example, this could look like:
