12:00 PM
@JourneymanGeek -1, not enough chocolate! :D

@ShadowWizard eh. I'm trying to reinforce with Sonic that it's not ok. Multi site spammer nukage is one of the rare things you absolutely need a cm for
Mods have no good way to either

Yup
@ArtOfCode those are big:

Getting there

I wonder if we have a cookie recipe in the folder.....

hehe
@JourneymanGeek "the folder"?? lol
I remember @Fabby saying something about folder with recipes, you too? :D
@ArtOfCode sell where? Supermarket, bakery?

12:08 PM
@ShadowWizard my mom's folder of baking recipes

@ShadowWizard all of the above

@JourneymanGeek oh, nice!
@ArtOfCode wait, you also baked some yourself, right?

If I had time I should probably convert them to index cards

@ShadowWizard occasionally, aye

@JourneymanGeek or into a recipe book, sold in shops. ;)

12:11 PM
@JourneymanGeek ye have work to do.
@Tinkeringbell a parrot would be fine, too.

Hmm?
Oh. I have REAL work to do today. It can wait a little ;)

@Tinkeringbell trust me, the sooner the better in this case.
unless JNat wants to finally implement the "entry level moderator access" with just user management permissions and give it to me :P

@Tinkeringbell think @Derpy means some spam profiles to nuke on MSE

@ShadowWizard never said that and whatever you do, don't brother checking.

New idea! Create a shared Google Document where anyone can write, people will post spam profile links there, and MSE mods will have something to do on their free time, when bored. Of course they'll remove or mark as "resolved" any profile they handle. :D
@Derpy well, nuking spam profiles is the most frequent request you make here so it made the most sense. :)

12:23 PM
@ShadowWizard ..... so that you can write a script to save any "valuable" picture those profiles could have?

@Derpy hehe, thanks for the idea! :P

@ShadowWizard yeah, I am so sure that didn't plan to do that before... -_-

It's for collecting Capthca images to displayed for spammer...
Their profile pictures, that is

If Shadow really wants those pictures, even I know sites where there's better ones than in the profiles here....
Honestly, not worth the effort :P

@Bookends that's so 2015... these days Captcha is just ticking a box. :)

12:27 PM
> Select all images with car insurances.

@Tinkeringbell last time I mentioned one such profile here in the chat, I started a "treasure hunt" quest....

@Tinkeringbell nah, those are boring and too easy to get. :D

Usually with these image captchas, I tend to be very pedantic with them; for instance, if I'm asked to identify what parts of a single image contains a certain object, I tend to select the squares that have any tiny part of them. This usually results in me failing the test. (I guess my brain works more like a computer :)

Too bad only imgur is bugged, and not Google... :(
No animation in avatar ^

@ShadowWizard naw. Lot of them are copyrighted and off the internet

12:31 PM
oh

@Derpy .... Not sure how you found that and a nsfw warning would be nice

@ShadowWizard many of the websites are defunct thought

Oh, @Derpy flagged that profile? I found it too. :D

@ShadowWizard er. Derpy will know
@ShadowWizard lol yup

12:34 PM
@JourneymanGeek simple - just monitoring the new users. Smokey keeps an eye on new questions, I keep an eye on profiles.

@Derpy If you vehemently disagree with the answer, you can always edit it and remove those bits and leave an HTML comment in the answer for the reviewers to accept / decline the edit.

@Derpy write a script that detects uncouth profiles then. :)

/shrug

12:35 PM
@ShadowWizard On my work computer now, but if you ping me privately after 20:00 CET, I should be behind my private computer and can post recipes there...
(A bit swamped with work for the moment)

@Fabby :D

:-)

For example my favourite cake recipe is off geocities

(just logged on to copy-paste one of my AU answers to one of our SysAdmins)

12:37 PM
@JourneymanGeek My favourite cake recipe is my grannies:
1 egg per person
As much sugar, flour and butter as you use eggs in weight.

@Fabby mine has vinegar

mix all up and put in oven.
@JourneymanGeek Aaaargh!
Jumping out of chat now!

eagerly awaits for someone to bake some muffins

!muffins
That's a feature request

12:42 PM
@Derpy bring SweetieBot back. :D

well then. Then at least

@JourneymanGeek btw, also... yep sorry about the no warning, realized that the second after submitting the flag.

Well flag like "Please delete this profile" usually means the profile isn't really safe to see
@SmokeDetector k

@ShadowWizard some have written only abusive content, some have abusive pictures.

And that varies. There's cheesecake and there's cheesecake with no frosting

Naked cheese cake? ewww

I see Jaoying Juthamart keeps joining this room... needs 20 rep to chat here, in case you missed the message in the bottom. :)

@ShadowWizard that's when the warning is good

Also, chat profile didn't update for several hours, which is weird.
@JourneymanGeek well, assume any flagged profile will have NSFW avatar.
Better safe than sorry. ;)

@Derpy probably? Also, might be a desperate move to lure more buyers, like SE made with the SO app.

@ShadowWizard .... People bought the SO app?

@JourneymanGeek no, but same concept: make more people install the app, try to reach goal of 10% of the overall traffic going via the app.
Of course it failed.

@ShadowWizard tbh marketing at the time had some odd ideas imo

1:32 PM
Why would I want SO on my phone for prolonged periods?

@JourneymanGeek there was no marketing for the app, they just hoped the name alone will be enough.

I can't write answers properly on mobile, and lord knows when I'm developing something right now I'm on a PC

@Magisch same reason you want SO app

@JourneymanGeek I do not

The thing they missed is a lot of power users use multiple sites

1:33 PM
@Magisch well, I assume they aimed for the anonymous visitors who only stalk/read existing answers, not those who actually write answers or even ask questions.

I mainly have SE app for notifications

Yep :)
notifications, that's about all I use it for ;)

Their grand plan was to embed Jobs into the app, then they could also start making money out of it.

I would use the SE app if I could review from it
or close

@ShadowWizard look, I would have even considered paying a budget game price if that was the port of the ORIGINAL game (maybe with some added content like a new area or just some digital making-off extra content)

1:35 PM
@Magisch you can close.

the "remake" thing? No thanks.

Just not delete.
@Derpy but?

@Derpy Next step: Remake is 50% more expensive then the original, contains microtransactions, additional monetization and lootboxes, original DLC not included but released at twice the original price later on.

@Magisch have you played Yume Nikki ?

no but I'm generally bitter about remakes

1:38 PM
@Magisch see the steam page review. Most of the positive ones are from people that didn't play the original.
That alone says a lot.

@Magisch ..... Like the lemmings remake
Had an energy mechanic that's literally pay to play

@JourneymanGeek Increase your per player monetisation today! reduce churn! leverage whales and dolphins! turn players into payers!
suppressed vomiting

@JourneymanGeek not Yume Nikki case. That is more an example of "original creator cared, new ones only cared about trying to make fan of the original buy the remake"
not really as bad as the Secret of Mana remake but pretty close.

@Tinkeringbell @JourneymanGeek and others - Firefox does SE Notifications. You can hear the 'notification ping' when on other tabs not related to SE/SO and if you have your phone sleeping your phone's Notification sound (which can be customized for FF Notifications) will tell you that you have a SE Chat ping, no doubt there's a way to get your 'upper right corner notification feed pulldown' to fire your phone's notifications too, but I've not been interested in researching that (my phone notifies me

BTW, about the Azure billing for basic expected services thing I mentioned before
just to give you ponies an idea of what I am talking about...
Azure VM are - obviously - accessible via Remote Desktop Connection.
obviously that also means that if you allow remote desktop the machine is exposed to brute force access attempts
you can somehow mitigate this if your workplace has a predictable ip range that will be used when accessing the VM - just create a rule on the VM network "firewall" allowing connections only from specified ip.
well, that is half of the story.
The other half is that Microsoft actually tell you that for best pratice you should start your remote desktop connection by clicking on a link on the Azure portal.

any internet-connected server is exposed to brute force access attempts

^

see: /var/log/auth.log

let me finish....

depends on how that internet connection is actualized

3:15 PM
the cactus may have already guessed where this is pointing to...
Now... If you followed me so far you should notice a thing.
Since you connect thru the portal... Microsoft can know WHEN a portal user is initiating a remote desktop connection to an Azure VM
this means they can do this.
> What is just in time VM access?
Just in time VM access enables you to lock down your VMs in the network level by blocking inbound traffic to specific ports. It enables you to control the access and reduce the attack surface to your VMs, by allowing access only upon a specific need.

How does it work?
Upon a user request, based on Azure RBAC, Security Center will decide whether to grant access. If a request is approved, Security Center automatically configures the NSGs to allow inbound traffic to these ports, for the requested amount of time, after which it restores the NSGs to their previ
See? the machine is not always accessible, the portal Automagically configure the machine Network Security Group to only accept the connection for a "short time" after the request is made from the portal.
That's actually a good and pretty smart thing....
So what is the problem?
that this feature actually cost about 15$/month for EACH VM

Finally, reason for many off topic questions on MSE is explained.
i just pressed the stackexchange logo, and found a "ask a question"-button so i used that. — Sikander Lhote 25 mins ago
The "Ask Question" button looks exactly the same on all sites.
Actually now with the "new themes", all sites look exactly the same except the header.
So people click the SE logo on top left, reach stackexchange.com, and from there click "meta" to reach MSE.
Having the same design, they have no idea they're in the wrong place.

@ShadowWizard My life's biggest dilemma is resolved

:D
heh

they click on the logo, see a small popup asking to navigate to a different site, click that, end up on the main network page, randomly click Meta because reason, and from here click the Ask Question button.
On a site that is one of the few with a design that is almost completely unlike tea.. I mean on a site that is almost completely unlike any other network site.
All while ignoring the similarly looking Ask Question button on the original site they came from.

@Derpy yes. Out of 1000 people, such thing happening to 5 of them makes total sense.
If we can reduce this 5 to 1 or even 0, why not?

Rob
@ShadowWizard Because the browser implements the same feature, as you mentioned in your prior comment that I replied to.

@Rob but it requires extra work

@ShadowWizard that said, given the effort they had put so far in getting it wrong, I'm not sure you can reduce it any more

user302202
They should update that with "except Stack Overflow, which is for everyone who codes"

user302202

@Mrs.Robinson correct, and no "Ask Question" button so people understand they're in the wrong place, then try to go back to the site they came from.

3:38 PM
that said, what did I miss here while I was having fried chicken as a dinner...

Then they see "meta" and think "hey, maybe it's the way back?"

@ShadowWizard I mean, considering the pretty long journey they have to go on to reach meta if your assumption is true, I can't really see how an extra step will stop them
That said, if your idea is to put a big "Hic Sunt Dracones" sign on the Meta main page... I will upvote that.

@Mithrandir I know, I always write click-baity titles and replace them seconds before submitting the post.

Just use each site's homepage's "hot" questions wait, that's a bad idea, too many closed questions on my regular site...

My idea was to show a site and some three of the top 30 questions (q/a score, not closed/locked....) This would prevent "out of context" titles in a way that there could be some "mark as not a good advertisment" feature, which is useful only for a more limited set of possible questions
