2:01 PM
@JourneymanGeek Come on, you already have mod powers here on Meta. What more do you want? network-wide suspensions?

@Bart words that spring to mind sitting target ... anger deflector

Why would you need to do that, when you can just ask a CM to do it... It's not like they're too busy for that or anything.

I don't think CM's hang out all days in chatrooms waiting for stuff to hit the fan ...

ew

@rene Not all day... but they do what they can.

2:10 PM
@MEEisJohannGambolputty... now that you mention it

Pondering an idea for a feature request to combat link-rot: trigger a "save-page-now" on archive.org for outgoing links on SE (live links on posts retained). Looking thru MetaSE I found meta.stackexchange.com/q/259657/373864 Is the conclusion from that that this was discussed and found "not good"?

@FreezePhoenix suggesting they are not too busy just seems far off reality.

@rene Well, one would assume you are never too busy to deal with a network-wide threat/nuisance

@LangLangC yeah, we also had a "broken links" review queue for 6 to 8 days.

Feature idea: When a closed question or a duplicate question is deleted, send a message to the user, containing a link to both the duplicate and the question they should look at. This would enable A) deletion of things that don't need to be there B) They can still go back and look at the message later

2:18 PM
@MEEisJohannGambolputty... Getting paid for what he's now doing voluntarily :P

@Tinkeringbell I feel inclined to look for all these Are the mods paid?-posts...
Also I'd like to have mod powers on a site and if only for a day. It wouldn't have to mean real power. I really think SE should offer some "playground" site where everyone can get mod powers upon clicking a button. (I know there is a dev.stackoverflow site but this is only for employees).

That would compromise the system tbh, because there are some scary things they don't want you to know mods can do (At least I think there are things they can do that they don't want you to know about?)

@rene That's so strange. Reading this meta.stackexchange.com/questions/300106/… also gives negative vibes. But I wonder why? That trigger would be behind the scenes, just providing a backup, ready in case the live link rots. Seems minimal for the users or posting people.

I mean, you can play around with some of the chat features, or at least know what they can do... they can delete a chat account... they can suspend, kick, send personal messages, all sorts of things...

@LangLangC the general consensus is that posts should be self-contained. External links can support the post but they shouldn't be required to have a valuable post

2:22 PM
@FreezePhoenix I can only think of the rep-reversal script. My idea for this site would be that it is reset every day or so (like the playgrounds for forum software etc.) Then the rep-reversal script would not be neccessary (on this site).
And most scary things can be seen by searching through the moderator faq on meta

@MEEisJohannGambolputty... Rep reversal?

@FreezePhoenix I mean vote-reversal for serial voting of course...

And a wrongful 100 rep penalty

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ only on the test site... Of course this site must not feed SpamRam, otherwise ...

Oh. Well, mods can do some interesting things, and CM's can do more I imagine...

2:24 PM
And it would be reset every day, so not the problem. Also if everyone is a mod, everyone can undo the penalty...

I'm not sure mods can do anything that I didn't know of that would shock me

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ They can suspend staff members.

@rene Sure. But right to quote and post length still considered 'good' limit this, while at the link much more could be found. And those links were found valuable enough to appear on SE. For Skeptics, History and a few more sites the original content might be crucial to follow up the arguments..

Well I'm not a staff member.

lol yeah. Mods can also edit other mod's chat messages

2:26 PM
Nothing mods can do is secret secret

@JourneymanGeek Not even chat annotations?

I mean the UI is probably - and we don't discuss suspensions...

:thinking: I've exposed the mod UI in chat before

56
A: Can we have a moderator only "flag for community team/developer attention" link on posts?

Shog9 Note: The tool has been updated, and now looks like this. Not calling this complete just yet, but we've added something toward this end: This is available from the "mod" menu on user pages, and generates a ticket in our internal queue that'll look something like this: You can use this ...

Mods can also spindle and fold other users:

@FreezePhoenix that we can do that isn't secret is it?

2:27 PM
I'm assuming there are tons of things that aren't in the UI

@JourneymanGeek IKR, these two went X-files for a moment

An essential part of how we do things is as much stuff as possible is in the open

^ Yes, true enough.

What we don't talk about is either cause we don't know (like the exact vote reversal criteria) or in the interests of the users involved (suspensions)

@JourneymanGeek You missed a spot, and now my shoes are making everywhere dirty again

2:29 PM
@MEEisJohannGambolputty... That's kinda hard though, as you need to protect mainly other user information.

Now as a moderator the most effective tool I have is folks trusting me
Oh ya

@JourneymanGeek Yeah that's important. Otherwise you are a moderator of nothing.

@FreezePhoenix eh

@JourneymanGeek Drama booomb

Its entirely possible to be a mod who people hate.

2:30 PM
@FreezePhoenix Double drama bomb

Its entirely possible to be a good mod who people hate.

I know that.

Wait, one of the sentences here implied that I trust you?
ಠ_ಠ

@Tinkeringbell I know, but when it would be a test site there could be a warning IF YOU CONTINUE, ALL YOUR DATA WILL BE OPEN TO USERS WHO ARE SMART ENOUGH TO CLICK CLICKED THE I WANT TO BE A MOD BUTTON

I once had a mod on another site whose primary role was metaphorically breaking knees.
@MEEisJohannGambolputty... what's the actual point though?

2:31 PM
Playground

Go make your own playground.

practically speaking 99% of my time as a mod is on the flags page

@MEEisJohannGambolputty... It killed bjb

@MEEisJohannGambolputty... It's more that you can't fence that off against people that don't care about sharing theirs, as long as they get to wreak havoc with the info from others.

2:32 PM
Or we could just make it so that mods can't see the info of other mods

@MEEisJohannGambolputty... i've seen people do some pretty dumb things as ROs

Impersonating @Tink on Christmas

like someone said something that was a bit crude in a chatroom they started...

@JourneymanGeek Hey who you calling dumb

they moved it to a more public chat where it was flagged...

2:33 PM
geez that is dumb

Ha OK that's dumb

(everyone involved got a suspension)

I know that making the test site would require too much change of the system for security purpose... But still... :(

@JourneymanGeek Curious. Did that involve me?

OK that's beautiful

2:34 PM
Wait do I really wanna know
Probably not

@FreezePhoenix iirc no

I'm resisting the urge to try a similar prank
Well worth it

The point being, "curiosity" is a bad reason to hand someone the keys

Me back to the book. Ciao

this is SE, not discord, deleted messages are public to RO's and mods lol... I was an RO once. It was... pretty boring. Nothing surprising tbh. Move messages, that was about it iirc

2:36 PM
@FreezePhoenix and room timeout

and kick
but if you abuse it.. people will be mad.

Well yeah. They should be mad

for that matter
I've seen various degrees of mods gone bad
its... not pretty

At least it's rare

nods I have only seen some questionable ones, thankfully. None gone real bad.

2:39 PM
heh

I only ever read one meta post about someone being demodded and there is one other case where I suspect it.

What do they do in the case of bad mod? Just demote them? Or like go full out nuclear?

Oh there's kind of a process for it

Dang they think of everything.

I saw one on MSO that asked about one once

2:41 PM
@Asuna I think this is my latter case...

Q: Handling Calls to Remove a Moderator

Robert CartainoStack Exchange has some of the best Moderators around — seriously — and that is due in no small part to the communities who scrutinize and vote in our Moderator elections. We have a rather formal process for electing moderators, but up until now the process for removing a moderator has been quit...

@FreezePhoenix its necessary
especially as the network gets bigger

@JourneymanGeek I'm a programmer I know that xd you can never trust user input, and never trust that line you just typed. Only trust the line you are typing.

sadly so - I think its probably happened at least once
@FreezePhoenix I mean practically and statistically speaking its just more likely

I think Shog posted the answer explaining why this person was demodded.

2:43 PM
Call to arms and pitchforks to demod a certain mod who abuses their power to type "its"

I'm pretty sure the cases I remember was after that

@JourneymanGeek Oh wait, Shog answered for both cases I wrote about above...
If I'd know the site...

@MEEisJohannGambolputty... There was?

Yeah, as you have more mods, and you have an increasing chance of corrupt mods in a same sized sample (They believe they won't be caught, or something silly), you have an exponentially higher chance of having a bad mod.

@FreezePhoenix not necessarily corrupt

2:45 PM
@Asuna it was something about a moderator locking dozens of posts and closing/commenting on them for the same reason.

@MEEisJohannGambolputty... oh, I actually know the guy

If there were a way to display all their answers on all meta sites..

He's actually the case where I feel he was acting in good intent
Just... went about it the wrong way

^ Too often this happens

I don't say they were acting in bad faith, just that they were demodded...
I knew it was on trilogy: meta.serverfault.com/a/8058/448541

2:48 PM
But this is boolean multiplication, sir. Bad faith + good doing = bad ( 0 x 1 = 0 ); good faith + bad doing = bad ( 1 x 0 = 0 ); bad faith + bad doing = bad ( 0 x 0 = 0 );

@FreezePhoenix its rare
but but
Sadly avoidable
You just post on meta, and get a good enough consensus, let your other mods know and let er rip

what do you mean "let your other mods know and let er rip"?

@FreezePhoenix precisely what Shog wrote

I'm lost, what is the post about

you post a meta post "Hey, turboenfrobulator questions are off topic here. There's 10,000 of them and I'd like to clean up"
the community goes YAY! (or gives good reasons its off topic)

2:51 PM
Oh lol... I recall doing something like that

if they go YAY! you tell the other mods ...
then do it, maybe with help

Why would the other mods not know in the first place?

IDK
I don't know how SF mods did/do communicate

Oh geez IBM sponsored ai.se

SU has an insanely robust system for it - and general community communication in general

2:52 PM
<https://ai.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/1341/i-am-going-to-be-editing-the-o‌ld-questions-forward-any-opinions>

A great example is the periodic TCWs we have
basically go open season on edits on specific tags

i wish there was some way for a mod consensus to disable rep from editing on a user, or at least diminish it

eh
that gets tricky

Because otherwise I end up with this ^

what's wrong with that?

2:56 PM
I feel like I should not have made that much rep in only a few days... especially just because of some 100 edits

Also the problem with what you want is it adds an additional burden to a mod without any real benefit
Well, that's what edits are designed to
and at 2 rep a piece up to a 1000?
meeh
its not really worth it unless you genuinely want to fix things

30 rep a day, it was a lot of edits

By design

Yeah
I've realized by now that edits like this: ai.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/3975 should not be made, unless you fix something else

no
actually the links at bottom make things easier to fix

3:00 PM
:thonk: Will note, please comment on my meta post

and essentially

Yeah that edit didn't change anything visually

Any suggested edit should substantially improve the post

Mhm. Indeed.

the only minor edits worth making are fixing typos

3:01 PM
@JourneymanGeek re your post People get lost and crash into meta - maybe we need roadblocks for their safety. This mostly exists already: This page is shown to first-time askers: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/ask/advice. Maybe it justs need to be highlighted, similiar to @ArtOfCode suggestion.

@MEEisJohannGambolputty... its a pretty old post

lol MSE needs to block asking questions directly, and just have a search bar.

and I half suspect the solution SE went with was... mods ;p

I know, but I noticed it only to day, as it was bumped today due to Art's answer.

Huh can someone explain how I have 125 rep on a site that I have 1 post, and it's at -1
and 0 edits on anything

3:04 PM
which site? Oh meta

Meta, yeah

101 -2 99 so... 26 rep
-1
A: What's the workflow for chat-suspended users to improve?

FreezePhoenixHaving been a user who was suspended, I have not seen a message that told me which one was flagged. However, they usually occurred pretty soon after the message occurred, so it wasn't hard to find out. As far as I can tell, if you are gone during the entire suspension, there is no way to tell tha...

this post is +3, -4
which is... 26?

Well I couldn't see that
Thanks

+30(2*10)/-8(4*2) is 22...

oh there's probably a userscript, or its a higher rep privilege.

3:06 PM
downvotes only take 1 rep away
I think.

otherwise I need to look at the deleted posts ._.

not on your own posts

You probably don't want to Journey

oh I can see them
I need to work out which ones count
and that's a pain

Yeah just warning you probably don't want to read them XD

3:07 PM
Only those scoring > 3 and older than 60 days at deletion
IIRC

ya, so none of them
ya.
I didn't want to comment on that

@JourneymanGeek it is 1000 rep privilege, unless you have this userscript: stackapps.com/questions/3082/view-vote-totals-without-1000-rep

more or less

I had to mod flag one twice to get rid of it. Maybe it's a rep recalc error?

I er... don't really check the voting splits much or even the score...

3:10 PM
The missing +2 seem to come from you accepting an answer to a now deleted question...
Otherwise your rep history looks normal (or at least there is nothing strange, they add all together to 125)

shivers thanks Tim Post

hah
that's pretty common.

I had to mod flag it tho

Actually that's why I got 10K here - you couldn't always see your own deleted posts under 10k

And here I am, talking with you all, rene, Journey, Kevin B... lmao
So how's your day going Journey? Mines gone fairly well. I should start working on homework soon, though.
Hm bounty isn't getting as much attention as I would like

3:17 PM
Depends on the site...

I asked a question on CR that I'm not even sure fits on CR but I can't find anything wrong with it. It's a question about my code that defines a new language that I later use in another question.

@FreezePhoenix about to go to bed lol

So I really kinda just made a new tag on CR... for my own language. I'm also looking for anyone who may be interested in writing some programs in it, for feedback.

@JourneymanGeek And the spammers begin to come out of their corners...

codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/201668/… If you're interested @MEEisJohannGambolputty...

3:20 PM
I just saw it. I think the links are real links if you don't write the brackets around them..

I'm scared to onebox because the onebox is just too big
And sometimes it oneboxes and sometimes it doesn't but whatever I guess it didn't

Also, Rene might be watching

That won't happen unless your message consists only of the link (at least I think this is the behavior)

@JohnDvorak Hm?
and I get 4 views in a minute, vs the 2 an hour

@JohnDvorak right ...

3:23 PM
see the other question tagged with it too... codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/203556/…
I'm not quite satisfied with the current answer, it focuses a little more on the langauge then the code itself lol
@rene so how are you doing?

fine

nods Good to hear.
Thinking of another World Building post... I'll have to put some thought into this one

3:45 PM
worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/q/137754/50406 Here it is... I'll be using this animal later in RPG

Ok, that is strange. This question is protected per the revision history and I am unable to answer it but it does not show the protection banner...

4:02 PM
@bjb568 buying ticket

> Why can't I answer this question? It is a bug. Read the post for the answer.
@ShadowWizard do you think this title is okay for a meta post bug report?
or too clickbait-y

@MEEisJohannGambolputty... bad title. Use something like "No protection banner for protected question".

I know... I just thought this would make more users come to my question... I will change it ((not posted yet))

4:21 PM
@MEEisJohannGambolputty... hmmm... that's odd. Will add to a list for Monday. There should be a banner at the bottom, pretty sure.

5:16 PM
@Tinkeringbell I drink pickle juice, and I'm definitely not pregnant...

5:30 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ We occasionally send boxes of angry squirrels to users.
And speaking of strange deliveries, one of our moderators apparently sent a box of squirrels to one of our users. We might be officially endorsing this, but I need to check on the circumstances.

5:55 PM
@Mithrandir Who said they were angry squirrels?

If you stick a bunch of squirrels in a box, I'm relatively certain that they'll get angry.

I want to mention HTF, but I don't think that's a good idea...

@Mithrandir Animal cruelty aside, if you ship a box of anything living to anyone, it's likely to be dead by the 6-8 weeks it takes to get it shipped

6:12 PM
@Asuna Fun fact: my brother just helped ship a load of corals from the zoo he's working at to two in England. Preparations took months yet nothing died in the meanwhile ;)

yeah, but specialized shipping is a separate concern. A box of squirrels just seems like "stick squirrels in a box and send it using <insert name of governmental postal service here>"

Q: Are questions regarding carnivorous plants within the scope of this site?

SonevolNowadays, carnivorous plants have become a popular pet for many. Some of them sold as pets are - tropical pitcher plants pitcher plants venus flytrap drosera capensis sundews trumpet pitchers They are also available online from major e-commerce sites. So, my question is - Will questions ...

Hmm. Tempting to throw a similar one on there for corals XD

6:28 PM
Coral is an animal, isn't it? Technically?

@Mithrandir it's a lot of small animals
Stuck together

With glue?

@andmyself I'm in scope ...

uh, yeah, you are... O_O

@rene inb4 meta question with the title "Are questions regarding plants such as rene on MSE within the scope of this site?"
:p

6:36 PM
:D

I think he really meant he's not carnivorous... :P

I might be in scope but not in focus ...

You really need a better photographer

But .... it is a selfie ...

Then where's the camera and the mirror frame?
No duck lips either, but we can make exception for you

7:15 PM
This "everything dark theme" addon is really nice

7:27 PM
The gold badger and dupe hammer one..?

@andmyself yes, nevermind, it shows an error message when trying to undelete...

2 hours later…
9:06 PM
It appears you're not very interested in learning about this site's scope, but anyway... Welcome to Meta Stack Exchange! @SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog No. You're supposed to assume good intentions

user437611
The number of "all time messages" is visible for some room owners and not visible for the others, for example, in the Python room. Any idea why? I couldn't find any existing meta thread about this.

@Blue Huh? That number should be visible to anyone and everyone: I see 1582407

user437611
@ArtOfCode Not that one.

@Blue Probably a user script/extension interfering with the page? It's publicly visible.

user437611
9:16 PM
Lemme take a screenshot.

user437611

oh that
repro
and not a clue

user437611
For Andras I can see 94.4k on the bottom right of the chat profile box, but for davidism I don't see anything there.

davidism's should be 35.1k according to their profile, but no idea why it doesn't show up there

maybe some botched algorithm like the one that collapses "*ently in room" users who are somewhat down on the list? ...

user437611
9:19 PM
Same for the Physics room. This is weird. :P

user437611
I initially suspected it has something to do with user activity in chat, but I can't really think of a coherent explanation. :)

Has this author posted any deleted questions on MSE?

user437611
Is this worth bug-reporting though? I'm just having dem...curiosity itches. :P

pretty sure you can ask about it here on meta.SE anyway
because it really doesn't make sense

user437611
Okaies. Thanks! :)

9:33 PM
Whoa I leave meta for 5 minutes and look
Already interesting posts showing up

Q: GoP - The Game of Points: Critical Sneak Attacks (Grant downvotes are commented soon)

Aquarius PowerLets see how a downvote without a comment explaining the reason, is like a critical sneak attack: We don't know who did it. We don't know why they did it. The target can't defend him/herself. The target can't adapt and learn from it. The target can't improve what he/she was doing. The one who a...

GLORIOUS. MAGNIFICENT. Oh God I missed these sooooo much.
Although, well, I've seen the OP before, I doubt this has the genuine new user frustration spice
Or maybe Aquarium Power is something IRL and relatively famous?
Aquarious. Whatever
All I remember is a negative feeling because they probably insulted me before on some post from a couple of years ago
Hi @Cat

o/

meta.stackexchange.com/questions/57268/… – khkhkhkh, how come I've never seen that one before?
@Catija How're you doing?
"Irritable". I. Love. It.
2010 is gold
Not only did it have
. . . "The King's Speech", "Inception", "Shutter Island" etc. but it also had "Meta Stack Overflow"

Meta - The Movie

Starring me :)
6

meh... if a parrot stars, the movie is going to look more like a fairy tale or something

9:47 PM
or a videogame-inspired anime about lawyers

I hate Rio.
Mostly.

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ :(

"Once upon a time, a dog, another dog, and a parrot entered the Tavern..."

well, I sure do hate how the Olympics at Rio went... ;)
@andmyself actually, I'm not sure I've seen the "another dog" very often...

@EKons Chris is around when you need him :)

9:49 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ not bad. Officially fully back at work now, which is great.
How are you?

@Tinkeringbell well... obviously, holding that diamond does indicate you're doing some... stealth job :P

@Tinkeringbell I'm not birdist but after the nth Owen-Wilson style eff-up-meet-your-girl-and-change-your-life movie I vomit at the concept

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ have you seen that Hitchcock flick?

@Catija Since the question you just answered has four close votes as "specific site" since it lacked context of the specific site, is it a good idea for you to clear those close votes?
(I deleted my comment and added the tag.)

@JohnDvorak Norman is classified as vertebrae but is not a bird

9:53 PM
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog we can reopen if it gets closed.
Anyone who voted to close can always retract their vote if it’s not closed yet.

@JohnDvorak Oh if you mean "The Birds" I've probably watched it as a kid and I've actually mostly forgotten about it
Dismissed like a vague nightmare
Like this other nightmare I had that the more I hit a poisonous spider the bigger it got
The wonders of a heavy meal before sleep

@Catija Generally, when I see a question that should not be closed that has four votes, I cast the final vote to expedite the overall process of closing and reopening. (Either wait for a fifth vote then vote to reopen, or cast the final vote myself and immediately vote to reopen.)
One of those four votes is mine, though.

? Why, though? Most questions that get closed never get reopened... it’s much better to prevent the closure than expedite a bad closing.

@Catija Oh that one. Vote retracted

@Catija Meh, it doesn't matter, since there is now only one vote.

10:00 PM
Meta.SE is a special case
Get the post to a certain chatroom and the desired modding action will probably happen
IOW, this is Janitor's Club on the Meta.

"the desired modding action" shouldn't happen if it's just wrong... :P
also, this is true for basically any site with an active general discussion room

@Tinkeringbell Mods are able to star their own messages?

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog if you pin a message and then unpin it, I think it leaves it starred.

hint: the diamond is one way to do it, but you don't necessarily need it...

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog Pin, unpin.
@EKons -1 hints are VLQ

10:05 PM
I was ready to say "-1 please don't spoil it right away"...
:P

WELL -1 UR FACE
I WILL DOWNRATE ALL YER ANSER

waits for a day um... where are the -1s? ;)

Dunno if mods can clear that pinny star though
But ROs can't.
So basically you cast a curse upon your own message

pretty sure they can't clean individual stars

@EKons :O STACKEXCHANG SENSORSHEEP

10:07 PM
although ROs can always cancel stars, but that has other side-effects
ah... I found it, it says "+100 24 hours ago Voting corrected" :P
and... you apparently evaded a suspension...
parrot snitched you, sorry!

You will nevar catch me alive!
Bites cyanide pill
Nom. Wait. Crap. That was just mint.

@EKons like... decrement the number by one?

Rob
A urinal mint?

I just made up that word, but I think it might actually exist. Not sure.
Yep, "decrement" is a real word. Woo.

10:48 PM
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ we can

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ yes,
