Q: Are unused classes compiled by Xcode when building an app?

Ani J WillisIf something is not used in C++, it's not compiled at all. Is the same true for iPhone? If I compile a program and there are unused classes or other stuff, will it be compiled or ignored?

@Moshe Hm....Done.

1 hour later…
1:26 AM
@Moshe no fires, just killing time being lazy
Got my Wii card for 2000 points and bought three Zelda games and have been playing Zelda all effing weekend ;)
@Moshe ok, actually, I do appear to be near some sort of fires in LA, but I don't think they are going to have impact on me, they're like 40 miles north of me or something.

Fires here near Austin, pretty bad: reuters.com/article/2011/09/05/…

2:31 AM
Just had a celebration here for someone who got married last night. Hooray for rice with chop sticks and too much cake.

1 hour later…
3:58 AM
Hi, @Sathya.
I should get to sleep. Uni week 2, here we go.
Earlier, in an epic battle between food and sleep... Food challenged sleep and came out on top.
Now, dieting must come to the rescue again.
Tonight at Eight, on...
(c'mon, a little help here...)

@Moshe Hi

@Sathya Oh, I thought I saw you float in earlier, could be my slow connection and imagination working to thwart me.

@Moshe I dropped in few moments ago :p
@HostileFork ouch. (I see you're from Austin - where at?)

@Sathya Cool. So, should I play with WinPhone 7 (Considering the book I got today.) or continue trying to get Android working? That Optimus T is still locked to T Mobile...

@Moshe oh crap, totally forgot about finding that unlock.. sorry :(
@Moshe ya ought to play with WP7

4:11 AM
@Sathya No worries, hence the reminder. To be honest, I kinda forgot too, until a few minutes ago.
@Sathya Why?
Do you think I can get a dev phone from MS for free?
Not to sound like a hapless freeloader, but it's a lot less expensive to learn a platform when the hardware is provided.

@Moshe MS have been binging on giving away WP7 phones.. especially if you're a published developer..
ok that "bing-ing" was totally unintended

@Sathya I know, but it's hard to get in touch with any of them. I got back an email that they sent to all webOS devs, but haven't heard from the student liaison.
@Sathya lol

@Moshe there was one guy personally responding to each tweet.. you should give a reminder to the liaison

Brad Watson, iirc
The student guy was...
Ben Lower

hmm

4:17 AM
Yea, Ben Lower, but he hasn't replies - well, not in the sense that my spam filters haven't caught on. Unless I tripped his spam filters.

well a reminder never hurts anyone.

After waiting for a reasonable amount of time - of course not.
Also, Mr. Watson has a phone number.
I can make a telephone call tomorrow!

that sounds great!

yep
Now, I know this sounds really wrong, but it would awesome if @Reno could get me in touch with some of the folks at his shop for an Android device.
But, I suppose I should start slowly.
@Reno, if you have any ideas who to write/call, please feel free to email me. (I should add that to my profile.)
Okay, good night.

@Moshe g'night!

4:36 AM
@Sathya: Not near the fires, but it's a (relative to my prior fire-stricken city of LA) a small town. So everyone knows someone who knows someone dealing with this right now.
I was just wondering how much real-time strategy game techniques are really being used and considered...if there's any extent to which someone is trying to optimize the outcome and has control to make holistic decisions.
I'm assuming it's rare for some guy with aerial maps to make the point-and-click call to evacuate lines of houses, and then run bulldozers over them to create firebreaks, etc.
If society prioritized the global outcome and was willing to defer to that kind of judgment, they'd have laid out the cities and done zoning differently in the first place, I imagine. :-/

@HostileFork ok. (I was in Austin for about a year, hence I asked :) )

@Sathya in which case, my location is right about where Riverside meets I-35, a couple blocks east of that facing downtown

@HostileFork ah ok. I used to stay at Great Hills.

o crap.

4:50 AM
Logistics nightmare at the moment. I could put someone up if they needed a place to spend a night, but it's the edge cases that are the problem at the moment...horses, families, dogs. Can't do a lot there.
Oddly but not entirely coincidentally, it was one of the nicest days here in a long time, good breeze. Good for having your windows open, bad for spreading fires.

@HostileFork aye.
sad that.

Hi TimPost

@Damodar Hello

@TimPost How are you
@TimPost after a long time we met again

@Damodar I'm doing well, you?

@TimPost me too fine, i was busy with office for last 2 months so was away to this world
@TimPost few days back, may be 2 or 3 days back, i saw you in this room, but u was offline

@Damodar I know what you mean. The week before last week was the same for me, I think I saw the world called 'outside' only twice

9:20 AM
@TimPost :)
@TimPost still you not slept?

It's only 5:20 PM my time

@TimPost oh, hope you was not from america?

I live in The Philippines
My profile used to say both US / PH in my location field, but it was automatically reduced to the first by the system. I corrected that just the other day, it now displays accurately

@TimPost how does the flagging concept works i mean, i flagged one post, do it follow any algorithem to scatter to mods or ramdomly will be assigned

@Damodar All mods on a site have access to the flags. One then takes some action on the flag.

9:32 AM
@Damodar The flags are presented to us in a queue ordered by the flag weight of the people who submitted the flag. We basically just start at the top and work our way down. Sometimes, we actually get to the end!

@TimPost oh based on the flag weight its get queued up. its suprising me
@TimPost so if i flag 3 to 5 posts at a time if there posts were flagged in between, so all flagged post of mine will be queued side by side in line

@Damodar Yeah, it really depends on how many other users flag it with you, and what the combined weight is.

shudders at the through of so many flags

I typically check the queue first for SPAM flags, as I like to see SPAM posts removed as soon as possible. So, I may start on page ... 3 ... of the queue instead of 1, just to handle all of the SPAM flags first

@TimPost ok

9:38 AM
Each mod has their own way of doing things, really. But the general instructions are basically "start at the top and keep going"
I also tend to check on comment flags hourly, just in case there's a 'fight in the hallway' that needs attention

@TimPost i likes your comments , very constructive and will not hurt others and encourages others

Note to self: I probably don't have the enough time, nor patience, to be a mod on SO.

@GeorgeMarian why , busy?

It sounds like a full-time job.

@GeorgeMarian It's not that bad, really. Instead of going to Reddit, I just open the mod queue and spend my 'decompression time' a little more constructively.

I pace myself while working and try to take short hourly breaks, especially when I find myself getting 'snow blind' in whatever I'm working on

@TimPost Fair enough. I guess my expectations of it should be different then my experience on Money.SE.

Well, Stack Overflow is a very cut and dry site, so the decisions we have to make are also rather cut and dry. The site I don't envy is Programmers SE if it reaches the kind of volume SO experiences. Good golly Mrs. Molly, I'd hate to see that hypothetical queue.

Yeah, good point.
Money.SE has been very hands-on, but we're still trying to grow it (and get the bugger out of beta!).

@GeorgeMarian I didn't know we even had a money.se

9:50 AM
@tombull89 You should peruse Area51.

@GeorgeMarian oh you was mod on money.se

I think Money.SE will go down as the longest beta. LOL
@Damodar I still am a mod. :)

@GeorgeMarian chukle I spend enough time on SF, SU, and MSO without getting involved with more sites.

Most of my accounts on other SE 2.0 sites are like 'driftwood' .. I just kind of wash up in various places and occupy space.

I thought I would be involved in the project management one. So, I committed to it. It's like a millstone on my Area51 profile.
@TimPost I think that's par for the course. There are only so many hours in the day.

9:54 AM
The thing is, I tend to visit many of the sites from time to time when I notice interesting things from the twitter bot, so I guess my 'dead weight' will probably persist in a dozen or so places
That's only problematic due to making a long tail needlessly longer, but I'm not sure much could be done about it

@TimPost when disputed is added as flag summary?

@Damodar If another user disagrees with your flag

-1
A: Parsing SQL table definition using regular expression in Java

MaxPattern p = Pattern.compile("(.+)([ ]+)(.+)([ ]+)(.+)([ ]+)");

@TimPost iam sure its not an answer for that question
its got disputed as comment

@Damodar A wrong answer doesn't mean not an answer.

@TimPost ok

10:00 AM
In that case, although a bit overly succinct, the user was trying to answer the question. "Not an answer" is for something that describes absolutely no solution to the question at hand, not even an incorrect one.

@TimPost thanks for correcting me

E.g. "Thanks", "Me Too!" or answers that ask purely for clarification of the question. Additionally, answers that just contain a link to another resource without at least summarizing what the link says are candidates for speedy deletion.
I'm amazed at how many from 2008 are still turning up. I thought we zapped all of those a few months ago

10:14 AM
@TimPost - what's the (current) count of items in the suggested edits queue?

@Sathya 5

goes to edit a post

@TimPost are there any tag wiki edits that were submitted by me, pending review?

@Sathya Nope

@TimPost i have flag weight of : 537.2867, why the concept of decimal introduced after the falg weight reached 500

10:25 AM
@Damodar That's actually a secret code, when de-crypted, it says "search on meta.stackoverflow.com" :P

Q: What is flag weight?

CoolBeansFlag weight can be viewed in user profiles. What is flag weight? Who can view my flag weight? When can I view my own flag weight? What are the possible values of flag weight? Why is my flag weight not an integer? What are the benefits of a high flag weight? Return to FAQ index

Q: Unnecessary precision displayed for flag weight

Shaggy FrogI currently have a flag weight of 531.7108. Is it just me, or are the 4 digits of precision after the decimal point just a tad unnecessary? Borderline bug I think.

Congratulations on getting over 500, however :)

@TimPost thanks

Yep, plus theres a badge for 500 FW.

@tombull89 ya, presently iam sticking to my shirt

wut.

If they pinned actual badges on us to represent our 'internet badges', Jon would fall over and create a crater.

@TimPost haha, they'd have to use milk-bottle tops or something.

@TimPost that is right

Q: Forgot Windows 7 Password, How to Get in Your Password Protected PC?

DaisyI forgot amin Password of my login account, i'm using Win7, can here anyone help me to get it back?

can we ask such questions

Off-topic, best migrated to SuperUser. Although is low-quality.

iam flaggign it to move

* don't move it to SU. Burninate it right there.
there are a million I-forgot-my-password-questions on SU

oh someone flagged it, before me

10:38 AM
oh yay, spam.

10:53 AM
@Sathya From Stack Overflow, With Love :)

Hi everyone. I wanna ask if it's fine to flag question as offtopic & vote it to close? I did following:

I went to the question with 4 close votes.
I have flagged it as offtopic
I have voted to close it (it was migrated to SF)
I have received "helpful" status on that flag.
Is it fine?

I'd say no

but still possible
Which flags get closed as helpful automatically when question is closed?

did you flag it as "it requires mod attention" or goto "it doesn't belong here"?

both
I was trying what happens
@TimPost sorry for later response, I was not notified about you mentioning me here. So answer is, no. But when somebody posts answer with only one link, with no explain, just nested link, I can't flag it because my flag will be 90% declined and post edited

11:02 AM
you can't flag both, IIRC. If you click on flag -> it doesn't belong here it becomes a vote to close

Sorry, you misunderstood
Flag -> other -> offtopic
Flag -> does not belong here -> off topic -> server fault
it closed my flag automatically as helpful and migrated question

the latter gets turned into a Vote to close @gen

second, I'll try if it do something with my weight
724.7692 -> 724.9283
flagged as dupe and voted to close

Q: Why badges are not automatically inlined?

Pied PiperWhy the badges are not inlined automatically ? For example tags are inlined automatically in all the posts (questions, qnswers and chat messages) Example : java Why badges are not? Example : [badge:necromancer] One is being not able to post something like this , but can post this.

11:50 AM
I seem to be missing a slew of notifications on Google+. Oh well, I guess it's still in beta. heh

2 hours later…
1:39 PM
Hmmm... searching for "cannon" will get me Canon Inc. as the first result

cannon?

as in "heavy artillery?"

Eh, yes

That's all because users does not know how to properly spell Canon
Blame the UX

Kann0n?

1:47 PM
I mean google based their results on customs of their users. If many people search the camera manufacturer with the Cannon keyword rather than Canon, it makes this rise in the rank I guess.

I wonder what's different about Firefox 6 that's crashing my system.

memory management?
Seems to eat a lot. And firebug does not help.
I ended up with 1GB memory used one day...

Yeah, I go over that often enough. That certainly could be the issue. Tough, it did seem to be better with FF6. I'm thinking graphics related.

hm. I switched to Opéra for the time being. Waiting for improvement

Lately, it's been crashing hard. However, initially I could SSH in remotely.
This issue may just push me into Chrome's arms for more than just long running web apps.

2:57 PM
@Mvy Ah, speaking of which, I didn't patch up the second part of that bug yet. Sorry about that :( I'll get to it today.

@TimStone No problem. Take your time.
I do less reply that's all :P
I also feed some problem back on the SE interface too :P

3:11 PM
So, what social media clients exist for Linux?

Diginotar (Comodo hacker) makes statement http://t.co/8ZOykVs Claims to have access to GlobalSign CA as well.

nothing is safe.

Diginotar made a statement?

Aren't they who has been hacked?
by previously know Comodo Hacker

3:14 PM
DigiNotar was the latest one in the news.
I don't know about it being tied to the Comodo attacker.

DigiNotar is a dutch Certificate Authority

Right. But, I don't remember any reports that there was a link to the Comodo attack, other than the fact that it's yet another CA that had some issues.

So unless the hacker set up the CA, they are not the same person

DigiNotar seemed much more problematic than Comodo.

It seems to be new that the hacker of this attack is the same as the comodo one

3:17 PM
Well, I don't know that I'd give any credence to that statement.

Well I kind of read he pretends to have hands on other computer etc...

I'm thinking about doing something wild and reckless tonight. I think I'll go de-saturate my Gravatar. Or, better yet .. sepia.

@TimPost Heh. Blend into the background?
@Mvy I'm looking at his statement linked in that tweet. It has some issues.

@TimPost Just turn it into a giant drop shadow.

@PopularDemand It is a giant drop shadow, that's what I'm trying to fix :)

3:20 PM
That's brilliant
@GeorgeMarian "I don't have time for details, just to inflate my ego".obliterateGrammar()

@TimStone Precisely.

Are we talking about the same avatar? I'm seeing two humans in front of a bamboo wall (I'm guessing... you and your daughter?), which is more like "it is sepia" than "it is a giant drop shadow."

The grammar issues may be chalked up to a language barrier, but the grandiose tone seems like pure bluster.
Hmm....Gwibber or HootSuite in Chrome? Decisions, decisions...
Oh, that's interesting. Gwibber is written in Python/GTK.

3:40 PM
some things have such silly names...

@Fosco Poorly thought-out names, for poorly thought-out apps. ;)

This internet thing is getting eerily good at marketing things I'm interested in at me.

Next it'll be subtly giving you cues that cause you to impulsively reach for your wallet.

"Steam Sale" seems to work on me, if my game library is any judge.
Although I don't need to reach for my wallet, since they conveniently store my credit card information.

I always make sure that box is unchecked so I have to make an effort to purchase new games, heh.
Although that typically doesn't stop me from buying anyway.

3:55 PM
I've so far resisted buying DXHR... I really want to check it out, though.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. There were a few bugs that got me, though..it'd be nice if those were fixed.

Woah how did my wallet get in my hand.

Oh, how I love it when my PC does not respect my wishes.

4:11 PM
Uh oh at the rate this database is growing, we're going to exhaust the keyspace of int in a mere 1000 years.

think about the childrens-childrens-childrens-childrens-childrens-childrens-children!

I'd better make changing that a top priority.

Oh man, soon the crowds will be coming in from the offensive-flagging discussion.

4:13 PM
:)

I feel duty-bound to give them something offensive to discuss about.
What was that recent thing?
Asshat.

What is a sshat?

We can always count on you to cause trouble ;)

@mootinator to be honest, I still don't know!
@TimStone yeah! But only a little bit to give the discussion some perspective. :)

Who would wear a hat made from donkeys?

4:15 PM
@TimPost indeed, indeed.

The idea of an ass-clown amuses me.

@TimPost People that can't afford beaverhats?

Naturally I assume all ass clowns sound like Eddie Murphy. Shrek might have had something to do with that.

@GeorgeMarian Dunno, most of my hats are made out of tin foil.
Except for the one I wear when moderating. For that, I wear a bucket.

4:19 PM
Tin foil hats are cheap. Though I'm not sure why people assume they have antennae.

@genesisφ very rarely.

@genesis It's not a question of time. It's a question of me not wanting my brain to wilt a little more as I read each one. Trust me, you don't want me looking closely at that comment thread. There wouldn't be a comment thread if I did.

I've been meaning to start a room just for C. So, "lounge" is to c++ as "__________" is to C. Any help on filling in that blank?

trying to think of something uncomfortable...

Roller Disco?
I was thinking Rectory , but that might annoy some of our more religious users

Since Lounge is type T you could have Lounge<c> too...

wouldn't it just be lounge.h ?

4:39 PM
extern C lounge :)

SittingOnATack<c>

#include lounge // valid c++
#include lounge.h // valid c
// granted, I'm a bit rusty there

I keep waiting for Zed Shaw to finish Learn C The Hard Way..

Why make it a punny title? Just call it "C" or maybe "Room C" or something
leave the puns for the room description
node.js, C#, javascript, php, they all are called by their language names

#ifndef __cplusplus #define Lounge #endif

I wish the C# and the VB.NET devs would all realize they write the same code, just different syntactic sugar

hehe... I am on a 'waitlist' for a vb.net night class.

@jcolebrand Infidel! VB.NET is for mickeys and mouses!

4:43 PM
's what I said

I ported some bad C code to bad PHP code the other day. Quite proud of myself.

apparently, I am now in the class.. crap, now I have to go to class on Thursday.

lol

I fail at reading... no, still on the wait-list.

why a vb.net class?

4:51 PM
Disney college.

5:15 PM
@RebeccaChernoff I decided to take a few night classes towards my degree... the counselor listed that as one I needed to take.

I guess I kinda meant why vb.net instead of another language. (:

The COBOL.NET class was full
3

@Shog9 There's still seats for bash on rails

that sounds like great fun

@RebeccaChernoff you mean why is the college offering that language?

5:31 PM
Not really. I'm trying to bash vb.net. DON'T GET IN MY WAY! q:

I thought we taught you to be evil better than that? I'm disappointed. :p
Also, the StackApps chat got frozen. -1 to Feeds.

I think it's because of the localization room that was created.
So it isn't keeping it open as the default room anymore.
Maybe.

Ah ha

Chrome freezes so much more at work than at home.. There must be a good explanation for this.

@Shog9 COBOL.NET? Seriously? hot pins in my eyes please.

5:44 PM
@jcolebrand Raise your hand if you've actually worked with it.

I have written COBOL programs of more than a HELLO WORLD nature
I would not call my ability more than beginner tho
I am not overly impressed with AS/400 either.

I dropped my COBOL class back in 1998 because the teacher had no clue, I was helping her, and it was more like an english class.

COBOL.NET however, not at all

@jcolebrand AS/400 is pretty rock solid, though I did bring one to a crawl once.
Speaking of crawl, my calves sure are hating me right now.

I am going to start C25k sometime in the next 7 days.
I should start tonight

6:30 PM
wow... a C# operating system... cosmos.codeplex.com

@Fosco Yea, crazy, right?

don't do that at home!!

Silly Europeans.

That does explain the hair loss
Actually, that partly explains M4

6:53 PM
@Fosco I guess we should tell everyone not to bother with the VB.NET OS since it will compile to the same code.
That image supposedly proves it wasn't plugged in?

@mootinator LOL... was just having another anti vb.net discussion on a smoke break..

Folks, I have an on-topicness question.
We had a big discussion some time back about those hilarious but admittedly off-topic high-voted CW questions on SO.
I said I would see to it that those questions find a place elsewhere, outside the network.
(Like the boat programming question, but others as well)
I might take fifteen minutes each day over the next couple of weeks to put a tool together that can fetch those deleted questions into an archive site of some sort.
The thing is, as far as I can see, I can't use the API: I want to fetch the full page as-is, including logos and everything, to make it a historical record.
So I guess I have to build a client that can log in as myself or some other 10k+ account using OpenID.
I would like to ask the community whether this reasoning is sound, or whether there is some other way I'm overlooking.
Is that a SO, or a Meta.SO question?
I would prefer Meta because the people who know the API hang around there.
And of course, the team themselves.
But it feels like it's more on-topic on SO.
Being a programming question and all.

Closed as not a real question... you haven't attempted to implement it yet. ;)
Your process is sound, you need to build a scraper...

Arrrgh! :)

I might be interested in assisting, as having something capable of logging into SO and acting as a user is something I'd like to be able to do. maniacal laughter

7:08 PM
@Fosco cool!
I've been thinking about using this for delving into some new platform, work isn't giving me opportunity to learn new stuff right now.

I'm going to look into making that happen, probably using NodeJS.
@balpha would you be able to confirm if the usr=t=...&s=... is the only cookie needed to authenticate a logged in SO user?

7:55 PM
Yes, I would be able to confirm that.

there's no javascript event for the inner html / child nodes of an element getting changed, is there?

yes
