@EatmoreTwisters Well, I was able to request a page as if I was logged in. It was easier than I thought... but we should discuss the details behind your end-goal, because I don't think it's going to be very easy.

12:26 AM
Strongly Agree, Somewhat Agree, Somewhat Disagree, or Strongly Disagree?
</annoying-political-survey>
Hey, @Zypher was here recently...

12:50 AM
Anyone here?
I've been given a green light to scrape a website for data. What's a good way to do so? I need the texts from a page.
There's a number of pages.
There's a single page for each of several categories. Each page has all of the links necessary.

1:17 AM
My A51 rep is 1337
@jcolebrand - I just realized that your profile says that you "write cutting edge UI". We should talk.

2:07 AM
I've drank the NodeJS Kool-aid, so I'll pipe up: NodeJS could download those pages, create the dom model, and access/export whatever you want.

2:30 AM
Look what a $99 Touchpad can bring

2:49 AM
@YiJiang Wow.
Well, now that the hurricane is passed, my siblings keep shining those * flashlights in my eyes at every chance. Someone burninate those flashlights NOW!

3:25 AM
@Zypher serverfault.com/questions/308474/… is redirected to dba, not so
@Moshe I try, at the very least

@jcolebrand What do you mean by "cutting edge UI"?
Innovations in UX, button placement, look and feel?

I mean that my fingers often hurt afterwards ;)

:-)
@jcolebrand Well, I'm finding school to be more interesting than I expected. I guess it's about the attitude.

Yes, that it would be

I am a bit swamped by all of the assignments though. Thank Gd, I can write fairly well.

3:31 AM
I told you didn't I? That you needed it and that you would enjoy it
I also encourage you to completely take advantage of your professors
ask any question that is mildly related

Well, my CS professor said that she's only answering questions in class about what she's discussing and when she's discussing it, so that won't do me any good.
But the other ones, sure.
My math course has RSA cryptography on the syllabus, which is exciting.

3:48 AM
> Well, my CS professor said that she

@Fosco sounds like a good thing to me
I learned more from my female CS profs than from my males

Very cool. I only remember one... cobol.

lol, I had a woman for that too

I'd like to know - Can I delete my 0 score answers without undeleting them by moderator after he see I'm trying to vandal my own posts?

A: Stackoverflow: Possible Established User Typo?

Peter Of The CornSince a site for programmers is bound to be filled with pedants who are offended at the slightest little mistake, it would awesome if this was fixed.

Has everybody got their awesome yet?

Hai. I can haz awesome? Kthanxbye.

@genesisφ consecutive deleted posts will raise a flag

@genesis Yes, I'd avoid deleting more than a few each day. Just because a post is zero score doesn't mean it isn't useful to someone.
I don't ding users for vandalism who are obviously just cleaning out their old posts / questions, but the fewer system generated flags you receive, the better.

Argh!
DevDays is cancelled
Posted by Joel Spolsky on September 6th, 2011

DevDays has been canceled, due to poor attendance.

It’s my fault, actually. I took a perfectly good thing (DevDays ’09) and gold plated it until it was a different thing.

DevDays ’09 was one day. So even people who couldn’t get their boss to let them go to a conference could take a vacation day or something. Everyone told us “Great conference! Too short!” So version 2.0 had to be longer, we thought. Two days!

Oh, also, DevDays ’09 was $99.  We pulled that off by being cheap. Really cheap. So even people who couldn’t get their boss to pay could afford to spring for the conference themselves. But t …

That's sad news. Explains why I didn't get an answer when asking for a ticket for the London venue after it was closed down as sold out.
Everyone in favour of holding an alternative conference at Marc's place, say aye!

7:01 AM
Does Marc have to be in favor of it, or is it a surprise? (;

7:12 AM
meh, pull up a chair.
I'll grab a few cases of beer and order some pizzas.

will there be awesome sprinkles?
Arse. Stackoverflow Dev Days has been canned http://t.co/3Y9XBit Shame because I was just about to cover my talk with awesome-sprinkles

@Marc cool! I'll bring some wine to complement things.

7:33 AM
k, let me just invent a fake address... (which should not be taken personally - I just had this horrible premonition of people actually turning up)

@MarcGravell 10 Downing Street seems as good a place as any other ;)

@YiJiang good luck getting into there ;)
also, is this new?

@MarcGravell shouldn't the right address simply be the only place in RFoD that has a T1 connection?

@EatmoreTwisters lol! I wish... RFoD is a bit of a backwater. My connection is not the fastest.

@tombull89 It's not. It's been on SE 2.0 sites since their start I think. Not sure when they've starting doing it on the Trilogy sites

7:36 AM
The Forest of Dean is a geographical, historical and cultural region in the western part of the county of Gloucestershire, England. The forest is a roughly triangular plateau bounded by the River Wye to the west and north, the River Severn to the south, and the City of Gloucester to the east. The area is characterised by over 110 square kilometres (42.5 sq mi) of mixed woodland, one of the surviving ancient woodlands in England. A large area was reserved for royal hunting before 1066, and remained as the second largest Crown forest in England, the largest being New Forest. Although the...
but it is pretty!

@MarcGravell no doubt!

@MarcGravell Thanks for that, because for a moment there I thought it might be...

They've been on the trilogy for months. How have you not noticed it until now?!

hehe; thanks @YiJiang - I shall send for some suitable folkish dancing clothes

7:38 AM
@YiJiang @RebeccaChernoff I have no idea how I've missed it.

I didn't notice it either.

@MarcGravell sure is, my first school trip was to the forest of dean. Back in 1996. Still remember it.

But then, I think my brain is trained to ignore social share buttons, as it does with ads

@tombull89 You're not the only one - seen that request for an option to turn them off on Meta?

lol, really? nobody is even going to question me? >_<
they were just added today. err, yesterday.

7:41 AM
@RebeccaChernoff I don't actually see social networking buttons because I had ADP block them
So, no, I would've never noticed them anyway

@RebeccaChernoff chuckle I thought it was my schools filtering blocking social networking sites. That'll teach me to trust a SE employee.

Also, NOBODY EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION. /amidoingthisrite?

8:08 AM
@tombull89 k; you're making me feel old now

@MarcGravell chuckle, sorry. you're only...11...years older than me.

@sathya I know. That's why I ask if there's a way to delete big amount of posts without being punished/posts being undeleted
@TimPost will I receive some punishment because of that flag?

@genesis you shall be burninated :P

@M'vy like deleted?

No, like burninated

@M'vy sorry, this term is not known in Czech, is there another word for this?

Q: No more burnination?

M. TibbitsQuestion: When making these requests which lead to visits from Trogdor, am I to assume that these tags are blacklisted? Or are they just removed? In other words, would it make more sense to re-categorize these requests as: tag-removal-request which doesn't exist tag-blacklist-request which do...

This is a stackexchange thing
Or better:

11:48 AM
I know it is, it's like cleanup. But, is there another english word for what would happen to me?

I was just joking

Ahh. Sorry

False flagging happens every day
you'll just loss 10 points in your flag weight

@M'vy I know it does. But when I see vandalism flag, I bookmark that answer. When I return, I see that post is undeleted
@M'vy it means about 50 flags for me :~/

50? all false?

11:50 AM
no. 50 flags acecpted to get 10 weight
Flag weight: 717.5956
Your flagging history

Well... that's the game.
non-linear flag weight ...

I know. I'm doing Marshal (gold) badge now

Hard one :P

deputy? sec Ill look

500 flag weight
you should have this one

stackoverflow.com/questions/7329085/… this answer has only one link - I have flagged it, but within 5 minutes grace period
Yes it is
So it was declined :/

hm

however I know how to get free flag weight without work of moderator

hm

@genesisφ I didn't think that was possible...

@tombull it is. but I won't tell how

12:03 PM
Huh? Who in here was asking for punishment? Am I too late?
2

I think off-topic can do this since it does only require 5 close votes

@Tim i was just asking if I get punished when there are too many system flags ?
@M'vy 10k on so?
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7329788/static-methods-or-singleton-which-one-to-choose

these are great to get some flag weight

@genesis I'm far from 10k on SO... I don't answer the topic that rewards...

@genesis Nobody knows the exact formula that goes into restrictions the system (now, or eventually) sets based on events. No, I don't think you're in any kind of danger, or even close to it. But my 'official' stance is only delete content when there's a good reason for doing it, not just because of a zero score.

You have to be 3k at least

12:06 PM
1907

@Tim I've got 1,3k answers. 700 of them aren'T upvoted. I wanna better ratio
@M'vy so you can't use it :p

But I'm better on MSO, and other SE sites.

@M'vy it works on all sites :)

@genesisφ why? Who cares?

@Eat about?

12:06 PM
About the ratio, I mean.

ah
I don't know, I wanna be better and better, in everything :p
some of my posts are really good only to be trashed

@genesisφ well, that's different. But I wouldn't delete contributions that are good or okay just to improve the ratio
The fact that a contribution hasn't received any upvotes doesn't automatically mean it's not good.

Okay

@genesis Let me take a look at your answers

@Tim please no :D

12:08 PM
I wanna be the very best
Like no one ever was
To catch them is my real test
To train them is my cause

But, of course, sometimes it does mean it's not good. I have lots of those as well that I've been meaning to weed out :)

/pokemons

@tombull89 The Rhyme sounds like it's from Harry Potter, but the content doesn't :D

@Eat you've got 592 answers with 128k
I've got 1300 with 15k
It's stackoverflow

@EatmoreTwisters Pika? CHUUUUUUUU.

12:10 PM
@tombull89 I see!

@genesis It's blatantly obvious that the quality of your contributions has really improved over the time you've been a member. I don't see anything wrong with pruning your own answers, but I strongly suggest doing it little by little, starting with the oldest ones over a protracted amount of time

I second what @Tim says.

@Tim okay!
@Tim did you look at some? :p

@M'vy who?

Me :P
on SO

@Tim you can

12:12 PM
Well, I mean .. all I can say is .. HOLY PEER PRESSURE, BATMAN!

Well, you'll get a badge. A shiny, shiny, badge.

@genesis I guess what I'm really trying to say is, don't let some angry ranty dudes from the C++ chat room get to you too much. (If that's the reason for the pruning.) SO rep is really not that important

@Tim are my answers really so bad? =D
@Eat you just detected why was I thinking about it

No, not at all. Some of your first ones were just overly succinct. And you work in a highly competitive tag

@Eat it is for me :D You're building career on your answers, so I think it is for you, too

12:14 PM
Some of the answers I've written that I'm most proud of received the least amount of votes, by way of comparison
I was just noticing that today, actually while re-vamping my careers profile

@Tim yes, I was trying to improve them. However the truth is that the fastest/shortest answers were upvoted A LOT!

A: which regular expression should i use?

genesis φ$string = "blablabla (blablaba)"; explode(" ", $string); you do not need to regex it

@genesis This is particularly true in the PHP tag.

@TimPost agreed

@genesisφ mmm, my participation over the last six months was partly motivated by that, but not too much. Maybe it'll contribute to me finding a job in the US one day... but I'm not holding my breath. It won't happen on that alone.

@Tim yes.. PHP is very competitive tag. It's question about seconds

Conclusion, popular topic rewards more than technical subjects

I work with PHP quite frequently and I actually stopped following that tag.

@Eat I know it won't. But you can use it as your ... portfolio... no no.. just, to show a lot of work done in a very short time
@Tim because it's too much active?

I pressed the 'random featured article' button and arrived on this article:
The English custom of wife selling was a way of ending an unsatisfactory marriage by mutual agreement that began in the late 17th century, when divorce was a practical impossibility for all but the very wealthiest. After parading his wife with a halter around her neck, arm, or waist, a husband would publicly auction her to the highest bidder. Wife selling provides the backdrop for Thomas Hardy's novel The Mayor of Casterbridge, in which the central character sells his wife at the beginning of the story, an act that haunts him for the rest of his life, and ultimately destroys him. Altho...

@genesisφ yeah, I know what you mean. A good SO track record is a nice thing to have, no doubt.

Good morning, everyone.

Morning!

@genesis That, and I actually agree with a lot of things that Col. Shrapnel has to say. It gets frustrating to see really, really bad suggestions get up voted so quickly.

@YiJiang oh, english, you so craz-wait, I'm english...

@Tim damn. I thought I'm mentioning TimPost

@TimStone Nice to see you. Here are your messages ...

12:18 PM
@TimStone Hi Tim! :P

@TimPost Col.Shrapnel is competing with me a lot

He's a very defensive programmer.

I have a bet running in the PHP room that he'll be banned again within 2-3 months, but it looks like things might work out this time.
:D

@TimPost but this one is very big fault from him.

@Tim on the principle that offense is the best defense? :)

12:19 PM
According to his profile,

When answer, I am trying to distinguish three matters:

What the OP asked
What the OP wanted
What the OP needed really

@EatmoreTwisters He's mellowed out quite a bit

@TimPost Yeah, I've always found his case unfortunate. His points are usually relatively valid, he's just had a history of presenting them with such uhh...jackassery.

@genesis Funny that you mention an answer that I converted to a comment an hour ago

@Tim yeah, but there have been phases of mellowing before. I still think I have a huge chance of winning that bet. I would rather like to see him stay on board, though - he's an incredible asset to the tag, no doubt, I've said that from day one

@TimPost this one was just very poor. I have flagged in first 5 minutes and my flag was declined :/ So fact that nobody see history in first 5 minutes, is true

@TimPost just a question, if you can, please answer. What is | tl in question? Is it some special mod action?

@genesis example of one of my timeline link : french.stackexchange.com/posts/1010/timeline

BTW I was looking around FrenchSE. I didn't get it. Some posts are in english and some in French. How should it be?

Both
You can ask in french or in english
but it should concern french :P
Since it has been build around 3 propositions, we choose to keep both languages
Because one proposition was french only, the other had english too.

12:35 PM
@M'vy thanks for explain
@Tim & what are all mod actions, Lock, unlock, protect, unprotect, ... ? I can't think about more

pb?

Well, basically that .. and the peanut butter button

problem

12:36 PM
migration is limited to mods (when there is no mig list)
all the castable votes are available to mods directly

@M'vy I think it's just Close -> Offtopic -> migration site -> vote

(their vote count as decisive)

@M'vy even 10k see close votes

Can transform ans->comm and so
@genesis I mean if a mods cast a close vote, it's done.

I'd like to see how can mod select target post to post comment to :p

12:38 PM
No need for 5 votes

@M'vy yes I know

Well that's what I meant :P

BTW, is there a need of prevention when question is closed? I doubt about it

prevention?

protection*

12:39 PM
Well I guess you cannot add any more answer

YOu guess correct

Still available: comments and vote? but not sure.

ahhh!
comments are disabled when locked

Edit shall be available too, so that you can get it reopened

vote is locked when it'S <10 user in any case ;)
edit is possible for <10 even if it's protected, I think
locked = no answers, no comments, no votes
BTW @TimPost are "invalid flag" and "he's vandal" flags always marked as disputed?
Heh. answer get deleted and I still can flag it? strange

12:42 PM
I don't think so .. if you just flag the same post that Community did as "other" it shouldn't dispute Community. Someone probably just disputed one or both flags.

None of my "invalid" flags were accepted

?
invalid means : not accepted
I don't get it?

Does anyone else see the minus sign above the vote count on this post?

sorry, but if you didn't know, there isn't "invalid" flag anymore in meaning as declined

@TimPost no, classic

nah

This is proof that Chrome is made by elves.

12:48 PM
I'm using chrome

Maybe it's the overlay
Nope, just my version of chrome on this pc. Sorry for the noise :)

@TimPost so about flags to flags, are they everytime marked as disputed?

@genesis No. It just depends on who views them and what they think

ok. are post marked as helpful automatically when post is deleted?

We appreciate the hard work that everyone puts into keeping the site clean .. but really, giving more thought to flags beyond that which is required to flag as accurately as possible is a waste of time.
@genesis Yes, if we take any action on a flagged post, the flags are validated

12:55 PM
@TimPost You mean all of this spy equipment that I bought to monitor moderator vital signs to determine in advance how they'll respond to each and every flag was a waste of time and money? :O

@TimStone That explains the ticking package I received in the mail today? I'm sure that had SOMETHING to do with someone's flag weight being lowered.

Heheh. ;)

@Eat I think he have meant recognizer/Detector of characters

We're testing a new revision diff engine (meta only at the moment). If anyone feels like checking diffs, go nuts :)

your own?

what do you mean?

Is it your own or are you using some open-source solution like before?

gets out his gold star board

the actual diffing algorithm is the same as before; we just made it more flexible and then dropped in better parser

1:15 PM
Alright balpha, who do I award points to for getting diffs on images?
3
Looks like it considers the space between tags as part of the tag diff (Jeff's edit)?

@balpha so I won't see any difference?

@TimStone me

I might have to extend your column farther, it's getting rather full. ;)

@TimStone ah yeah, I didn't test the tags -- good catch

@balpha woah.

1:19 PM
Hmm, is there any way to resolve this case?
The "Please advise" is really anchored to the last paragraph, but it's hard to tell in the diff since the newline was removed along with the signature and misspelling.
I could see that potentially being impossible to determine correctly though.

not sure what you mean

Well, in the revision it looks like Please advise was added on its own line, but that's not the case. It was actually the replacement for "PLease advice", and the "\nRegards, Sri" was just removed.

as far as the diffing algo is concerned, "PLease advice \nRegards, Sri" was removed, and "Please advice." (note the lowercase L and the period) where added

Right, that's fair. I can't tell that the newline was removed, though.
Not that it really matters though, I suppose. It's clearly not there in the actual post, so.

note that if only a new line was removed, there'd be some indication (not pretty, but at least you can pin down where something happened)

this with the low quality filter ON. Imagine if that wasn't around... shudder

@balpha question, do you store 2 versions of post, 1 for editing & second for viewing?

for the current revision yes. for older revisions no.

Ah. And which one is submitted? I have seen that current editor does transfer current one to html before submitting when tried on my own machine

uhm... what?

@balpha I'm reprogramming my command key to print just that.

1:45 PM
hmm
OSQA uses same editor as you on SO do. And it does parse text just before submittion into html

The clientside Markdown parsing is just for display. The server just gets the original Markdown source and converts it to HTML itself.
@TimStone tags are fixed
