ugh. I hate twitter.
I mean, I tried to respond to something
and ran out of charecters.
thirce.
I DO NOT DO TERSE AS WELL AS I THINK I DO.

There exist websites that split tweets and allow you to copy and paste the separate tweets. They usually add text like "[1/2]", "[3/3]", etc.

ah. ;p
I just keep talking.
and talking
and...
;p
I could do that manually if I knew how talky I would be?

Also, I received a new answer to my bounty question. Just to be clear here, do you have any objection to my potentially choosing to award it the bounty?

....
No?
Literally, dude, its your bounty
Do what you feel does the most good.

(as I said, I always ask question owners if they don't like the bounty being given to a certain answer, because I once had a case where a user complained when I awarded a bounty to an answer they didn't like)

4:13 AM
So, just so we get it clear.
I usually tell folks, the point of a bounty is advertising.
But but...
that's only mostly true
it also lets folk say "this answer was super super awesome and if this was my question I'd pick it"
which is the case here
so, in general, always, if you award a bounty on one of my questions on a site where I could have done it, go ahead
the one exception is when I actually do it to help someone out when its an interesting question. But then telling me which answer helped the best is a condition of the bounty.
but this isn't a case. Knock yourself out.

Q: Did MSE chat just bork out for a second?

Sonic the Inclusive HedgehogI was chatting on https://chat.meta.stackexchange.com. I just got a popup saying "there seems to be a problem connecting to the server, please reload". I refreshed, and I got my browser's "cannot find server" error. To see if it was just an issue on my end, I checked https://downforeveryoneorjus...

@Makyen As someone who's frequently involved in the SOCVR process, what's your opinion on meta.stackexchange.com/questions/309507/…?
@Catija You didn't take any pictures of Bennett at the airport that day?

Oh. @SonictheInclusiveHedgehog if it's the latest answer on that question you want to bounty, I actually think it's brilliant

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, I wouldn't have asked you again if I was referring to the same answer.
Because you already told me then that you're OK with it.

4:56 AM
Yup!

5:32 AM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog My personal opinion largely parallels the accepted and bountied answer by Isiah Meadows. It goes over most, if not all, the points which I've stated in SOCVR, and more. I feel that just the bare links are a bit rude and am against using them. OTOH, as supplemental material to an on-point autocomment, it can be beneficial. I don't personally use links to the site. If I did, I'm sure that I'd be submitting several PRs to improve the site's content.
However, it's been some time since I read any the content there, so it may be different from my recollection. Note that my point of view is a bit colored by already having a significant collection of autocomments for most of the situations which I encounter. Although, even if I did not already have such comments, I wouldn't feel that using just the bare idownvotedbecau.se URL as acceptable.

hey
idownvotedbecau.se is not needed if there's already a canonical FAQ on per-site meta describing "How can I improve my post?" with each answer explaining each reason and the recommended action.

@Makyen Its an excellent answer IMO - even when you don't have autocomments
And while I don't do the whole "we need to be super cuddly to newbies" I don't think that approach teaches them anything they need to know.

hey
Like, we can actually migrate the content of that project hosted on github to SE, making it CW, then (almost) everyone can add/update them and use the "share" link on the answer, or beautify it with [Reason](link-to-answer)

user315433
Maybe change the domain to makeitbetter.by

user315433
Belarus instead of Sweden.

5:45 AM
@hey If it's already covered in a per-site FAQ, that's great. Are they discoverable? In general, I've found that huge amounts of information is strewn around in various meta posts, most of which isn't well organized on a per topic basis, or at least isn't easily discoverable (e.g. linked from the help center). Frankly, while I'm someone who does read through the help center when I'm joining a community, it took a long time for me to know that there was a FAQ on Meta SO.
@bro A different domain would significantly help.

@Makyen that's a thing.
SE does have a lot of "soft" rules, and a lot of it's kind of all over the place or interpreted differently
and a lot of folk assumes it works just like a forum

@hey It's reasonable to have it, or at least similar content, on SE. I assume it's currently on GitHub because that was an easy way for the person to set it up, required less buy-in from other SO participants, and allowed them to maintain some control while also having the benefit of other people able to contribute. Part of it, probably, was that starting such a project on MSO/MSE might feel a bit more daunting to some people than just creating a GitHub repository for such a website.

hey
Fair point. I can imagine a general "How can I improve my post?" on MSE, and a specialized one on each per-site meta (if needed). But yeah, who wants to kickstart it...

6:04 AM
@JourneymanGeek There are multiple problems. Many/most people who come to SE will have experience on other sites which are significantly different from SE. A lot of that experience will be with forums where they are used to interaction, rather than strict questions and answers, with minimal back-and-forth. Unfortunately, their experience on other sites many set them up for having SO not meet their expectations.
@hey That sounds like a good idea. Thank you for volunteering to spearhead the project. :-)

hey
heh ;p

6:21 AM

@Makyen which I think is the cognitive dissonance many outsiders have.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Thanks.

6:26 AM
@JourneymanGeek Yes. I believe that is something that significantly contributes to the dissatisfaction which a significant portion of users experience.

So..
when I was new to the network.
I spent a week trying to get to know the place
I guess no one has time for that sorta thing any more, but it helped ;p
@Makyen and probably contributes to the grumpiness of the entrenched users
Not that its anything new. Eternal September and all that

In any community, you will find that you fit in better in the community if you take the time to learn the standards and norms of the community and at least attempt to conform to them. A lot of problems come from people being so focused on wanting an answer to their question, such that they are unwilling to do that, if they even understand that doing that is a thing.

hey
It's always Eternal Summer of Love in Iceland

@Makyen quite.

6:34 AM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog If you're interested, SOCVR's *-pls Request Generator userscript (GitHub) (install) was updated to work with MSE and the Tavern. It will semi-automatically generate such cv-pls requests from question pages.

@Makyen Does it comment on the posts too?

user202362
I am not sure people who plotting to fit in so they can get the answers without contributing is any better than the ones who contribute by answering others questions as long as they don't purposely break the rules all the times.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog No, it doesn't comment on posts. It just sends the requests to the chat room you select. The Tavern is the default for MSE. Commenting on posts would mostly be the AutoReviewComments userscript.

I'm looking for a single script that implements a single button to comment, downvote, VTC, and message here

@hey While I don't necessarily agree with the specifics in that question, I do agree that SE should do more to make sure that new users are informed of the basics of how SE, and the particular site they are on, works, including the major differences between SE and what they might be used to. How best to do that, is unclear. What is clear is that what is currently done is not sufficient.

6:53 AM
Do we have a nepali language site or a site where that script is used? If not revision 17 should be rolled back.

Why is this post being downvoted?
@rene OP approved it, it needs a mod to override the approval

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I made some comments about a similar request on a now-deleted Stack Apps question. While it's certainly doable, I've generally not had the need for all of those functions in combination, at least not with a single invariable comment, so I've never put something together for a one-click solution to all of those.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I don't see why overriding the approval is required. It should be possible to just roll it back, like any other edit.

@Makyen The suggester still keeps the +2 rep.
Whereas with overriding, they lose it.

more importantly, suggestion privs and noisy feedback

@duplode: "This question is not a mere attempt to vent -- reading it should make that clear." Sure... eventually. But from the very title of the post (not to mention the random image macro), it looks like it's venting. It gets to constructive points, but a good post starts constructive and stays that way. This reminds me of the blog itself, in that whatever good it may be trying to do is far too easily washed away due to not saying it very well and adding points that don't really need to be there. — Nicol Bolas 15 hours ago

I wonder how these same people would feel if the majority of their posts were systematically downvoted and piled on with horrible comments.

@JourneymanGeek I don't really like yours.

True, but it works for me, and a lot of other folks

user310756
@hey No, but as the community exists, the site will come to a collapsing end.. . hence the site is acting the change it. It's unsustainable as it is.

user202362
it can change for better ... or worse

@YvetteColomb I don't think how its happening now is going to help at all.

And I think folks are just super emotional now

user202362
I believe in making the system working around human nature and bring the better side out of it and not forcing human nature to change. Be nicer and helpful so others will contribute in return. Not forcing people to behave in certain ways - remember, it always work in both ways - site can ban anyone who does not obey its rules, and users can stop contributing because they no longer feel happy and appreciated when they do so.

user202362
if just a few people misbehaving on this site, it might not be ideal, but if most of your high rep users leave, this site will virtually collapse

Ok, the 4th mini-crisis is ... if you hang around a social group, you need to continuously refresh others memory about you by turning up to events ... if you turn up to events less than once per a couple of months, eventually regulars will forget about you :(

user202362
Ok, not completely forget about you, but you will be re-newbified ... people will look at you and say, I think I might know you from a previous event. But they are not sure ...

@TelKitty Indeed. I had a case of that the other day.

@Taryn if you have a few minutes would you mind checking why the SEDE refresh for stackexchange.codegolf didn't succeed. Did the backup of the production database maybe fail?

SEDE has been slow updating for a while. Puzzling.SE hasn't updated either.

@Mithrandir hmm, let me check all of the databases then. Only codegolf had this catastrophic failure AFAICT.

@rene The job failed. Digging in.

@Taryn I've also found 'StackExchange.Conlang.Meta_Temp' so that failed as well.

Yeah the whole job failed.
Gonna kick it

That is strange because some SEDE databases were up to date?
Or is it one job per site?

user310756
I'm trying to grasp, did you feel unwelcome?

You were told not to after the first report (in CHQ) and you still re-reported it in the Tavern

@PrincessLuna No, it was the reverse order. I reported a full-form link to an NAA answer here, but due to a bug in SmokeDetector, the question got reported instead. I then went to CHQ and saw that the question had been reported instead, and then as a test reported a short link to the answer instead to see if it was a bug in reporting full-form links to answers.

//shrug

12:47 PM
SE can be hostile, and is, but at first I think SO need a policy, splitting rudeness from insult, and put a no tolerance for insult

Not sure adding more voices helps, but gotta see if I can shift things just a little
@yagmoth555 eh, or focus on the fundamentals
every comment should be constructive in some way.

as insult in chat is a direct 1 week ban, why in comment you can insult and get a warning is not fair and send a mixed message

@yagmoth555 chat is a bit of a complex problem
there's no proper protocol for chat
and stuff that works well for one site might not work for another

@JourneymanGeek I agree its complex, but in chat you cant delete a message after 2m, to keep log I guess, on main site you can technically bully someone easily by erasing your comment after

@yagmoth555 mods can see. You can let them know with a custom flag, or hopefully over chat.
and doing that ought to get the book thrown at you.
also, chat moderation has two aspects

12:51 PM
I agree, but if its a high rep user that insulted he get a warning?

@yagmoth555 oh hell yes.

like we discussed, there is no policy, and that lack of policy is what I dont like

@yagmoth555 its not about the people who do it
its what is done

On Wikipedia, many abuse cases often suffer from the "Super Mario Problem": if a non-administrator does something bad, they get blocked, whereas if an administrator does something bad, they simply lose their administrator privileges, while still being able to edit.

@JourneymanGeek I agree, but that lack of policy now make ppl post log on twitter to get revenge

...and only if they repeat the bad behavior will they get blocked.

@yagmoth555 sigh that's a problem I'd like to address eventually
I'm not happy about that but I think it needs calm heads and a delicate touch
We have precious little of neither.

In HR, in example, if you insult in the business, or in a parking lot before job, all count. SE policy is not the same at the moment, its why I think it got so many user talking about it I guess

Well this isn't a job
Chat's a social space.
I think someone described Root Access as "Cheers with a friendly dog"
and that works for us ;p

haha, yes, but on technet where I moderate, a user that insult, on wiki or forum or anywhere else get banned by the cm staff after the report

So, lets say there's an issue
I'd rather go "hey, that's not cool"
And it works!

there is no tolerate for insult, but that only insult I talk, not rudeness

Well, 99% of the time you can defuse that by being poilte. Disarm the guy.
and if that dosen't work, just shove em out the airlock.... for a little bit.

yea, and a one year ban is big, why not a week off ban at first

And there's nothing worse for someone trying to pick a fight than someone being polite and rational.
hm
that depends on the situation
I'd totally throw someone the minimum suspension if I felt it would get through to them
