@SonicWizard The response to that request was written by a CM... I don't know that means it's necessarily easy to obtain that information. I don't know that it's not... but I'm not sure why one would be different from the other. For mods, we see two pieces of info - are they banned and have they run into the ban.
Which is why I'm pinging Shog with the updated version of my request.
Also, would you support or oppose this in principle?
@SonicWizard I don't have strong feelings either way. I've found that such alerts are relatively unuseful. People who want to post will ignore them or simply not read them, as they refused to read any of the other content that they'd been given before.
How about if the user is forced to wait 10 seconds before being able to close the dialog?
^or 20, or 30, or an hour ...
Another 6-8 weeks ...
@SonicWizard That would require a different UI than already exists for those sorts of popups (as far as I'm aware of them).
00:11
@Catija currently the div pop-ups disappear as soon you click outside, yes.
Modal popup windows are a quite different thing.
@SonicWizard seems pointless

A: Warn new users who ran into a question ban on other sites before they post here on Meta

broUsers are shown a warning before they receive a question ban. If it didn't help then, it won't help here either. Developer time is better invested into something that improves the quality of the content that lasts, not on dealing with rejects.

that.
Developer time is better invested into something that improves the overall quality of content that gets posted here on Meta. — Sonic Wizard Apr 19 at 5:53
Precisely this. Just about anyone hitting a ban has already been swaddled in yards of silky-soft warnings and guidance, which they've probably never read. Giving them more text to read - after first running an expensive cross-site lookup - isn't likely to make one bit of difference. — Shog9 ♦ 7 secs ago
In other words, implementing the above feature will at least cause some people to reconsider before posting this, which will improve the overall percentage of good questions asked on Meta.
very unlikely
The much, much cheaper option would be to put an interstitial page on MSE that says something about meta being for questions about the network or some such, complete with that checkbox on the bottom.
00:25
Same as trying to make an analphabet wary about the big "Do not enter!!!" signs you made up for protecting your private property.
anyone likely to read and comprehend a targeted warning will read and comprehend that. Some larger portion will fail to find the checkbox. The rest will ask anyway. BUT - without the expensive cross-site query.
No. You are wrong, and the evidence that you are wrong is plain and apparent. Go ask your question on StackOverflow if you think they will appreciate your question. Gerhard "Mathematics.Stackexchange Also Has Their Standards" Paseman, 2018.04.23. — Gerhard Paseman 9 mins ago

The fox spirit (狐狸精) or nine-tailed fox (九尾狐), having been originated from Chinese mythology, is a common motif in the mythology of East Asian countries. In East Asian folklore, foxes are depicted as a familiar spirit possessed of magic powers. These foxes are depicted as mischievous, usually tricking other people, with the ability to disguise as a beautiful woman: "The fox spirit is an especially prolific shapeshifter, known variously as the húli jīng (fox spirit) in China, the kitsune (fox) in Japan, and the kumiho (nine-tailed fox) in Korea. Although the specifics of the tales vary, these fox...
Miles "Tails" Prower (テイルス, Teirusu) is a fictional character in Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog series, and the title character's best friend and sidekick. Tails also appears in his own spin-off series as "Two Tails" in comic books, cartoons, as well as in an OVA: Sonic the Hedgehog (OVA). The name "Miles Prower" is a pun on "miles per hour", a reference to the famed speed of Sonic the Hedgehog. He is an eight-year-old fox with two tails, hence the nickname. A mechanical genius, he is able to use his two tails to propel himself like a helicopter. He debuted with the release of the 8-bit version of Sonic...

@TelKitty In a world where 'toughness' equates to things like callousness and not caring, why would you consider 'being tough' a good thing?
no idea what you talk about, but you can always send contact form to SE and ask them to take a look and remove that mod you talk about so much.
user202362
@Mithrandir24601 this is not a social network, we care about truth and knowledge more than personal ties
user202362
09:22
also being tough is a great thing because people with the greatest contribution to mankind are all tough
@TelKitty That's true, but doesn't address the point of why 'being tough' should be considered good - you can have/answer with 'truth and knowledge' without having to be harsh about it
user202362
toughness is necessary when you are defending the truth
user202362

@TelKitty Why? Just because that's what a large number of people are brought up to believe, does not make it so

user202362
@Mithrandir24601 I suggest you to start look at facts

@TelKitty I wouldn't equate "never be a push over" with 'being tough' though

@Derpy Um...how's that relevant?
@SonicWizard Random trivia?
...and I hit the rep cap for the first time, on my birthday
user202362
@Mithrandir24601 to me, never be a push over is worse than being tough - tough person can still be caring, never be a push over sounds like not easy going
@TelKitty really? There was one, who cracked the Nazi Enigma machine during WW2 and probably saved millions of lives by this... He wasn't tough. He killed himself when pushed too much.
09:39
@ShadowWizard define "tough"
user202362
Contribute to the war must be a great contribution to human kind
@Derpy one who don't care when being insulted, and can adjust to major changes in their life.
@TelKitty Ah, that's where we differ - I don't see how a 'tough' person can still care - to me, it's equated with the opposite - being uncaring. The easy road in life isn't always the best road though :P
user202362
@ShadowWizard You are a young male wizard on a lonely island in the middle of the sea. A day a plague strikes the city. As a result, all the females slowly start to turn into stone statues. On the other and you are unaffected. In the end, you adapt to the situation and continue your studies in your tower, while the population slowly dimes. Are you tough?
user202362
09:45
yes you can be a tough and caring person
@TelKitty What about the other parts of the definition: "Demonstrating a strict and uncompromising approach.", "Strong and prone to violence", "A rough and violent man" (informal)?
user202362
I think tough has slightly positive connotation
user202362
but I guess it's like with any attribute - two sides of a coin
@TelKitty True enough - I think I'd personally use the word 'strong' to describe what you're referring to, as opposed to 'tough', but I think this is brought on by reading a Wheel of Time, where the only thing I remember picking up from that (overly long) series was the difference between the meanings of the words 'tough' and 'strong' when applied to a person

11:35
@user5389107 May I ask, what happened?
@user5389107 just one question, if I may... is this what made you take a break/quit SE?
11:51
@ShadowWizard It's multiple things honestly. I have some really bad destructive personality traits, namely I take a lot of stuff way too seriously and I get extremely anxious about any sort of feedback. Due to past experiences, every time I don't hear anything for a while ... I assume the worst of what happened. This coupled with a conversation I had with mith a while ago in the IPS chatroom confirmed some of my worst fears in that regard
for the ones who speak Bart-tongue.
So I decided to make a clean cut rather then wallow in my anxiety to the point where I make everyone miserable and hate me with my anxiety about this
@user5389107 I've had a similar experience too. Temporarily cutting back from it and then re-approaching it later with new eyes is what helped. Best wishes from me during your break :)
translated summary of the above article:
> The control unit of a Ski lift gondola in Austria was exposed to the internet, allowing you to start/stop/reverse it and even configure the steel cable tension
@Derpy on purpose? Or was it hacked?
12:03
@Derpy Hopefully that was not vulnerable to CSRF attacks
@ShadowWizard on error. It was supposed to be only available over LAN. It was accessible to everyone over the web.
@Derpy huh. Anything happened?
@ShadowWizard There is a video I found on youtube of a malfunctioning ski lift from the same producer suddenly going in reverse mode at full speed. Not a nice view, people got launched face-first in the snow as the seats rapidly turned direction at the base of the gondola. I don't know if it is related
Either way, it is scary.
If it is related, then the "error" was used to full damage. If it isn't related to this specific incident... it only proves that that company already did mayor errors in the past.
In both cases the question is : why are they still allowed to operate in the field?

@user5389107 I just wanted to step in and expand upon my answer here: meta.stackoverflow.com/a/365764/19679 to say that your efforts were far from fruitless and have had a very positive impact on the site. We uncovered a large number of sock puppets and voting rings with your help, which allowed us to normalize the voting on a large number of posts. That overall helps the integrity and trustworthiness of the voting system.
@hey jumping around?? My kids do it all the time without having fever at all... ;)
15:29
@user5389107 I understand what it's like to cope with anxiety, and how you can get 99 pieces of positive feedback yet fixate on the 1 negative response. I do that all the time, dwelling on minor critiques of my popular projects. If walking away from the site is the best choice for you right now, I get that. I just want you to know that you had a strong net positive impact on the site, and will be welcomed back if and when you want to return.
I think that while sick with high fever, I learned to read wall clock, without digits, in age of 4 or 5. (way before I "should" have learned it) lol
@BradLarson you talk about SO, I assume? Looks like the straw was IPS, not SO. Unless I misread some things here.

Completely unrelated to your question, but congratulations on asking question number 50.000.000 :) — Manfred Radlwimmer 7 hours ago
user315433
PostId 50000000, to be precise.
user315433
Fittingly, it's unanswered.
@ManfredRadlwimmer Just being pedantic, but you mean making post number 50,000,000. Post IDs are shared between questions and answers. — gparyani 14 secs ago
@bro The strange dot-for-comma convention they use in Europe :)
user315433
@SonicWizard yeah, it broke my stats-scraping script on pt.SO. Although I should know after this exhausting exercise in number formats
user315433
18:29
My point was more that PostId = N is not "question number N", since questions, answers, tag wikis, etc are all numbered within the same table.
user315433
And there are some gaps created when SQL server restarts.
@bro And don't forget ArtOfCode's position: "I would use commas, but that would annoy a particular set of people. I would use dots, but that would annoy the other set of people. So, I'll use spaces. Now you're both annoyed."
user315433
Thin spaces, I hope... not the regular ones.
user315433
> Numbers consisting of long sequences of digits can be made more readable by separating them into groups, preferably groups of three, separated by a small space. For this reason, ISO 31-0 specifies that such groups of digits should never be separated by a comma or point, as these are reserved for use as the decimal sign.
For example, one million (1000000) may be written as 1 000 000. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_31-0#Numbers
user315433
Art's position is essentially ISO 31-0
18:35
buh.. @Evan strikes again.
Why do you need 30k rep for that? Why not just open it up to everyone? :) — Sonic Wizard 11 secs ago
food.. for.. trolls... shivers :D
@ShadowWizard Better to participate in the joke, but seeing as he always responds to the comments, I'd want to see what he responds to my comment
@SonicWizard nope, he rarely, if ever, responded to me.
Maybe because of my location, and he's smart enough to avoid suspension.
(e.g. by insulting me in comments, which can lead to flags etc)
Wikipedia has explicit rules against "gaming the system" and "wikilawyering"
18:44
that was quick: meta.stackoverflow.com/a/366500/578411 a month suspension.
@SonicWizard Well, they have x10000 more content than SE, so it's essential.
For instance, there is a rule saying that if you revert the same edit more than three times within a 24-hour period, you will be blocked immediately. However, I've seen many blocks issued for "gaming the system" because users performed a fourth revert just after the 24 hours expired.
@rene huh. Some people are beyond help when it comes to understanding how SO/SE works.
MSE plea for suspension removal in 10.. 9.. 8..

@rene of what?

@varadmehta People say experience is the best teacher. But that's not true. Stack Overflow is the best teacher.
I'm not sure about Smokeys report
19:02
Looks dumb, but at least innocent :-D
@rene What are you planning this evening? Heintje at full volume?
not spammer or troll, yeah
Wouldn't it be time to do a post lock and comment purge on that drupal drama?
@rene no, still waiting for something official. 700+ rep user in a small-ish site nuked like a simple spammer is fishy.
@πάνταῥεῖ no, but I have a ticket for a kind of Queen tribute / lecture tomorrow night. So I expect that to be fun.
@ShadowWizard it deteriorates a bit, the discussion that is.
@rene to be honest I didn't bother to read all the edits, it's just a wall of text. But the fact remains: account with high rep and lots of good content is destroyed, without any explanation. To anyone. So this makes me realize same can happen to me, on the smaller sites. That's all.
19:09
fair enough
I'm trying to continue my silly stupid generic delphi datetime scanner implementation now. I'm still nodding, They provide tons of stuff to deal with datetime formats, but just to convert intrinsic datetime types to string, nothing vice versa like a simple format string, e.g. %YYYY/%MM%DD %HH:%MM%SS%mmm :-P. My plan is to build a generic regex based upon such format string now.
Usually when a user post such thing a CM or site mod post answer like "since you started this, we can reveal what is going on, you did [list of bad stuff], hence got punished". But in that case, nothing like that, just irritating and unhelpfull comments from a site mod. @rene
But smokey and you interrupt me all the time :-)
@ShadowWizard Yeah, that is true. Let's see what happens then. I'll try to ignore it
@πάνταῥεῖ you're welcome
19:13
@πάνταῥεῖ regex ... well, a date is not html, so you might be good
There should be a (more or less) simple way to create a generic matching regex and indexing matching groups to extract the necessary digits.
I've honestly never used a regex to parse a date. I rather write a parser myself if I have to.
@ShadowWizard I'm hesitant to ask, but where is this? Never mind. Found it.
@πάνταῥεῖ "18th in March 70". Extract digits from that. :D
@JonEricson enjoy the read ;)
My reading time plugin estimates 11 min read
19:19
I just need digits and simple separators so far (like in my example)
@JonEricson thanks for chiming in. You can just see the nuked account on Drupal, I guess, no need to read all the stuff the frustrated user posted. :)
@πάνταῥεῖ oh. I did it tons of times, no regex. Just ordinary, readable, string manipulation.
In JavaScript, C#, and node.js
Maybe even Delphi and C++
oh, and VBScript!
How could I forget classic ASP and plain VBScript... :D
Repressed memories are memories that have been unconsciously blocked due to the memory being associated with a high level of stress or trauma. The theory postulates that even though the individual cannot recall the memory, it may still be affecting them subconsciously, and that these memories can emerge later into the consciousness. Ideas on repressed memory hiding trauma from awareness were an important part of Sigmund Freud's early work on psychoanalysis. He later took a different view. The existence of repressed memories is an extremely controversial topic in psychology; although some studies...
@ShadowWizard You Mid$ you way out of it
@Shog9 but my classic ASP experience is a good one... and I'm still using some ancient VBScript utils to this day in some projects... though didn't write one for years. :)
"The theory postulates that even though the individual cannot recall the memory, it may still be affecting them subconsciously, and that these memories can emerge later into the consciousness."
It's like when you belch, and don't remember eating liver & onions...
19:25
@rene nah, too efficient. Better use Split and eat up some memory. ;)
(in VBScript you have to Erase array created with Split)
@Shog9 man... that's one of my favorite foods... for real. :D
"Likes Classic ASP, liver and onions"
@Shog9 that is me.
:-D
Hey, you forgot the Oxford comma! @Shog
I'd post the pic @Adam posted on my question, but guess it's too NSFW for this room. lol
(Tim Post kind of hinted this by nuking the question itself)
@ShadowWizard Yep. I think I know what happened. I gotta pick up my kids from school soon, so I won't get a response in right away. It's a bit of a mess all around. :-(
@Shadow I don't care about performance issues ATM, I just want to radically shorten the code. Delphi is so chatty :P ...
@JonEricson no worry, I can wait. Thanks!
@πάνταῥεῖ Split shortens it for me, usuallly.
No fancy substr/Left/Right/Mid stuff.
Just split by the date separator, try some if needed, and take the values you need.
19:33
@ShadowWizard oh... I didn't forget.
@Shog9 oh
blush
So why not "and" instead of the comma?
Just regexes for the allowed format strings and generating another regex with matching groups to identify the parts. That's my idea currently.
sd tpu-
@πάνταῥεῖ and one regex to rule them all?
Something like that, yes.
19:45
@Jon just please ping me if/when you post answer, I might miss it otherwise since the question is below the radar. (Not in homepage even when there is new activity due to the low score)
Here are some valid format strings I'm thinking of:
> `%YYYY/%MM/%DD %hh:%mm:%ss,%nnn
%YY/%MM/%DD %hh:%mm:%ss,%nnn
%DD.%MM.%YY
%DD.%MM.%YYYY
%DD.%MM.%YYYY %hh:%mm`
Matches should optionally or exactly count max characters for the placeholders
One vote away from populist...
Oh... wait... now I'm confused... does the accepted answer have to have more than +10 or your answer?
