Apparently, people think that arccot(-1) is -pi/4. Since when? For me, arccot is what we get by taking the piece of cot from 0 to pi and inverting it. Then it's a nice continuous positive function.
But now, the CAS I try all tell me arccot is a discontinuous function that's negative for negative inputs. I'm afraid it's the case of xkcd.com/1268
So, asin(x) + acos(x) is always pi/2. asec(x) + acsc(x) is always pi/2. But atan(x) + acot(x) is pi/2 only half the time. WTF.

Loosely related: if the wider goal is to match Googlers to answers, then we have to consider that the Googler - question match is fuzzy. A question will draw people who have a similar but not quite the same query. It seems to make sense to allow the same fuzziness in answers.
In other words, it shouldn't be a big deal that an answer doesn't answer the exact question that the OP had.

could you post another link @ano?
@RougetheBat Another link to what? I already tried four links (combinations of HTTP and HTTPS links, plus linking to SO.blog and blog.SO.com)
tried in the den
2:10 PM
@Ano that isn't a frequently asked question
@Shog9 I said "proposed FAQ"
Not playing word games, just stating the obvious
Nobody asks that
@Shog9 So where is the official documentation supposed to be?
eww. merged questions.
AKA "No, don't do it until you're totally sure. Then think twice. Then probably don't do it"
@Ano Bill's answer was fine. I don't think merges are so complicated as to warrant making it twice again as long.
A screenshot would've done more good than the edit
2:21 PM
@Shog9 Right now the info about merged questions is forked across many questions (the answer to Moderator Cheat Sheet and small paragraphs in the duplicate FAQ and lock FAQ)
Cross-linking is helpful
@Ano probably cause, well, the moderator cheat sheet (and the TL) are the first port of call for many a confused, bright eyed and bushy tailed new mod.
Reproducing the same bug here:
Right now, precisely one link to the merge question, so putting more info there just buries it
Bam! Mixed content! Deleting message to remove that
2:22 PM
and we have a pretty good system for finding stuff
Phew, mixed content gone now
@Ano heh, we were talking about it elsewhere. and I was debating replicating it in a new room, with screenshots ;p
@Rouge It only seems to happen if the image in the onebox is an HTTP image.
There's just one problem:
Loading mixed (insecure) display content “stackoverflow.blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/…” on a secure page
@JourneymanGeek Rouge was doing so in Shadow's Den.
2:24 PM
It isn't http
@RougetheBat The mere presence of the HTTPS protocol doesn't necessarily mean it's secure
Sometimes things can be served without certificates (not invalid certificates, but no certificate at all)
@Shog9 I was going to add links to that in the duplicate and locking FAQs and remove extra wording from the paragraphs there
If you go to the image, it says it's a secure connection. If there wasn't a certificate, or it somehow else is insecure, it would pop up
@JourneymanGeek Out of curiosity, why did you roll my edit back? Can you please explain?
2:28 PM
@Ano cause it ruined the flow.
@JourneymanGeek I really don't think it did. It's just grammar and capitalization issues I fixed, and explaining what Root Access is to those who don't know. Is there a good reason why "Root Access" should not be capitalized?
shrug It made it less nice to read on the whole. I'm fine with correction of spelling errors. I'm not fine with it not reading like I wrote it, especially on meta.
the explanation kinda moved the reader off the major point I was trying to make.
@JourneymanGeek Couldn't you have just removed that rather than revert the whole edit?
shrug What's that reason...
(Also, am I going to get given the 4th degree everytime I roll back one of your edits?)
@JourneymanGeek What's "4th degree"?
If I don't get a clear explanation as to which changes were wrong and why, I won't know which ones not to make in the future.
2:33 PM
something worse than the 3rd degree
Hm, don't you think constantly pesting people whenever something dosen't go your way, in itself is a problem?
@JourneymanGeek What are "degrees" in this context?
... kids these days...
The third degree is a euphemism for torture ("inflicting of pain, physical or mental, to extract confessions or statements"). In 1931, the Wickersham Commission found that use of the third degree was widespread in the United States. No one knows the origin of the term, but there are several hypotheses. The use of the third degree was technically made illegal after the Wickersham report. However, the interrogation method known as the Reid technique, which is now widely used by law enforcement in the U.S., is seen by many as simply a psychological version of the third degree in that it is equally...
@JourneymanGeek At no point was I told before that I'd be pestering you if I asked why my changes were incorrect. Now you told me that you don't want me to define terms in a sentence, so I won't make that change. Are there any other specific changes you don't want me to make?
See? This is exactly what I mean!
I just want to answer stuff, not go over every change I didn't want someone to make on my answers. Its not... fun :(
I listen to those requests. If I had been malicious-minded and not listening, I would have kept pinging you with requests, but I didn't (except for one case where you were involved).

@JourneymanGeek I'm going to make the same edit without the explanation you said you didn't want. Feel free to stop me in the next minute if you don't want it.
@Ano Not everyone's detail/rules/perfection oriented. I quite literally just want to post the most useful answer I can.
Especially on questions like that, how I write it is important - quirks and all.
@JourneymanGeek Action stopped.
Even if 20 year old me was much better at this.
He was a goddamned idiot, but clearly I forgot a few tricks I did back then ;)
@JourneymanGeek The sentence "Is it collective punishment, and does leaving the bot alone against the spirit of the suspension." doesn't make any sense to me.
2:45 PM
@Ano it makes perfect sense.
It refers to the intent of the suspension.
@JourneymanGeek Not only is it grammatically incorrect (it's a sentence fragment), I got tripped up when reading it.
Did you mean "Is it collective punishment, and does leaving the bot alone go against the spirit of the suspension ? "
I sorta have an idea what it's trying to say
(Edited that in the meanwhile)
@JourneymanGeek Well, to be honest my initial edit to that sentence was what I thought you were trying to say
Also, if it trips you up, should you be editing it? You could, comment for clarification - for example...
and get a "oops! Lemme fix that real quick!"
2:49 PM
> I suppose part of the issue is "does suspending the bot do this?" and whether it is collective punishment, and is leaving the bot alone against the spirit of the suspension?
Your new sentence no longer trips me up, but it still has incorrect grammar.
Dosen't have to be perfect.
dosen't it? :P
Do you mean "I suppose part of the issue is "does suspending the bot do this?" and whether it is collective punishment, and if leaving the bot alone goes against the spirit of the suspension . "
Is the intent and the message that matters.
I like the way it reads now
@JourneymanGeek Does my suggestion change the intent?
2:50 PM
@Ano flow man. It lacks flow.
I gotta have mah flow.
readability > flow
@JourneymanGeek Your existing sentence is a run-on. How about this, which isn't but tries to keep the same flow more? "I suppose part of the issue is "does suspending the bot do this?" and whether it is collective punishment ; is leaving the bot alone against the spirit of the suspension?"
(remove space before ';')
Still has the exact same flow, but trivially solves the run-on problem.
2:53 PM
@JourneymanGeek No, it's my space. I had to put it in so the Markdown renderer could do bold properly.
also... what semi colon?
I don't like semi colons much
Pesky things, with their ... semi ness. and being named for part of the digestive system
@JourneymanGeek No, that would be the ':'
now colons, those have a certain degree of full colon-ness.
at least they're bold about being a colon.
@JourneymanGeek Wait a minute, gave it a second read; turns out your sentence does meet the grammar rules. It just false-positively tripped my grammar filter.
(I want the run on sentance on purpose cause its the same idea)
or multiple aspects to consider.
2:55 PM
@JourneymanGeek It's not actually a run-on. My statement that it was is wrong.
Please don't insist on being ungrammatical
I actually prefer shorter sentences
@JohnDvorak Ingrammatical? unpossible!
my head's beginning to hurt
@JohnDvorak more seriously - there's some fixes I'm completely fine with
including grammar
@JourneymanGeek I made the same edit, but now it only has capitalization and minor grammar edits, no flow changes. I.e. it omits the explanation and keeps your new sentence as is.
2:57 PM
but sometimes I use a few ... slightly unusual constructions on purpose
like the one that confused Ano. There's a point to it
Do you like confusing people?
@JohnDvorak only when they deserve it. Or it amuses me.
Do you like confusing confusing people then?
But here - I was trying to get the reader into the mind of someone facing the same situation
@JohnDvorak I like confusing confusing people, confusingly.
See, this is the type of discussion I was expecting when I initially asked the question:
31 mins ago, by Ano
@JourneymanGeek Out of curiosity, why did you roll my edit back? Can you please explain?
2:59 PM
@Ano on the other hand, that was broad.
And some stuff - like explaining what root access was... kinda non critical in understanding the wider narrative.
And I listened, rather than warring over the edit. Now I know not to make flow-changing edits to your posts. I wouldn't have known what you meant by that with just your rollback and initial responses.
Its like "he was tying his shoelaces - strings made of woven cotton with brass aglets, the little things on the ends of shoelaces"
Too much flow and I become washed away
@JohnDvorak Which is good man! You are cleansed! And maybe thrown off a waterfall to your doom! And eaten by fish!
and drowning. Not to mention my fickle skin.

@Aemilius I really don't see why four questions with just -1 score would cause a ban in and of themselves. My Super User account has several negatively-voted questions, yet I've never been banned or rate-limited. There must be questions with more negative score that have been deleted. (Yes, deleted questions also count toward the ban.) — Ano 2 mins ago
Hello @ArtOfCode
turned up to see if Tim Post was around... which he is not :P
@HTTP Typo, fixed it.
also, the 0-score questions are actually +2/-2 and +3/-3, so there were quite many downvotes, and closed questions.
@HTTP I upvoted one of the negatively-received questions which I (very much independently) thought was a good post. They now have five questions with -1.
9:41 PM
SO should have a citizenship score that is continuously shown to user (only to them), and is on some finer scale than candidate score (maybe 0-1000).
Goes up: posting something useful, reviewing, editing, voting. Goes down: commenting too much on the same post, commenting WHYT, commenting and not voting, commenting, commenting.
@FTP commenting too much on the same post -- sequentially, or combined? Because specifically, for LQ posts, there could be a lot of comments that are still useful
Could be. But a good citizen will offset those many comments on an LQ post by some more consequential actions elsewhere.

@HTTP I upvoted one of the negatively-received questions which I (very much independently) thought was a good post. They now have five questions with -1.
@Shog9 Downvoted one of their posts which I (again, on its own merits) thought was a bad post. Are they blocked now?
I wish everyone could agree on whether "close window" button should be in top left or top right.
Or in the center of the window. Whatever. As long as it's consistent.
10:44 PM
@Ano are you trying to use them as a guinea pig?
@Shog9 To be honest, yes. Though I'm not violating any rules here; any votes I cast were on the post's own merits. I went and found posts that IMO truly merited the votes I wanted to cast, and did so. Is that a problem?
Though I didn't initially know their ban would be lifted after my upvote above; I only got the idea after Jon Clements' comment that their ban got lifted. I didn't know it would lift it.
I was thinking that it wouldn't, because I was convinced they were hiding deleted posts.
@Ano yeah, don't do that
@Shog9 Okay, but now my votes are locked in.
Vote or don't, but don't use others as subjects
But did it reinstate the ban, @Shog9?
10:49 PM
See, I'm not going to encourage you here
@Shog9 I promise I won't do any more testing; I just don't want this one to be futile.
@Shog9 Also note that I do learn from you:
You must have deleted questions with more negative scores, and ignored warnings and rate limits in order to get banned. How many of your questions are deleted? — Ano 2 hours ago
@Aemilius Did you ever, at any point, receive a warning saying you're about to be banned? After that, were you ever rate-limited from asking questions? — Ano 1 hour ago
@Ano but... Do you learn the right lessons?
@JourneymanGeek Shog once kept saying that if someone gets banned, they had to have ignored warnings and rate limits to reach it.
@Ano deleted almost never matters. Look at the questions that are visible, provide specific advice for improvement
6 questions at -1 easily worse than 1 deleted question at -10
If you could give only one piece of advice, "edit all your titles to be specific and detailed" should be it
11:07 PM
@Shog9 or blue cheese is not a substitute for soap.
11:20 PM
@Ano also that not everything needs to be perfectly documented, especially stuff kept secret on purpose.
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, the ban algorithm is private. What are you getting at?
We went over this just two days ago. It's private because folks fixate on the wrong things.
Like deleted posts
Instead of improving extant posts
So when you're like, "got any deleted" and then voting for science... That's precisely why we don't document it.
