There is a mumps outbreak on campus here, with 20+ cases so far. No virus deniers yet, but a few vaccine refusals.
Measles, on the other hand ... appears to be eradicated in the Americas.

what is one of the things social animals are good for - spreading viruses

Is there any 'helpful flag' weight given to the system that allows users to unilaterally delete certain comments (like +1 comments)? E.g. can a user casting their first flag unilaterally delete a comment that only says "thanks", or does the system only trust users with a Citizen Patrol/Deputy/Marshal badge? Or, does it give a sliding scale of trust? e.g. users with a Marshal badge can unilaterally delete comments with a lower weight/threshold?
3:35 AM
There is a "secret" list of triggers that will make it so that a single flag can delete a comment. Starting with +1 is one of them.
Your flagging history is irrelevant, it just depends on whether the flag has one of the trigger items in it.
@Catija Yes, I'm aware.
@JourneymanGeek migrating zombie birds?
@TylerH I know this because I had a comment automatically deleted that met that and was flagged by a user who'd never flagged anything on one of the sites I mod before.
@Catija "secret" - but probably on meta.
3:42 AM
@JourneymanGeek There's a couple of meta posts with lists of known ones but the full list is secret... which is why I put it it in quotes :P
Q: flagged comments disappear instantly ... what's going on?

Matt FenwickI've noticed this happening recently: when I flag useless comments, they seem to disappear get burninated immediately. My guesses: they only disappear for me each of my flags has coincidentally made the post hit the automatic deletion threshold they actually disappear get burninated because ...

Q: What is the SE version of Seven Dirty Words?

user259867Caution: R-rated language Some words, when present in a comment, make it eligible for instant, automatic one-flag deletion. Out of the seven words you can never say on television, only appear to work this way. But then there are other, SE-specific dirty phrases: accept rate or accept-rate ...

I guess it is secret
A: Who has the power to delete a comment?

Jeff AtwoodWithout giving too much away, there are certain heuristics that make some types of comments a bit, shall we say, easier to flag away than others. =8-D

Considering who wrote the answer, I'm going to assume that's a pretty old one.
Yeah, I was cleaning up comments on a question and the thought popped into my head; I already had over a thousand helpful flags when they implemented the unilateral-delete feature, so I wasn't sure if it was a sliding scale or not.
3:46 AM
Nope :D If it has one of the triggers and it's your first flag, away it goes.
Now I feel old ;p
That's so weird... I looked at Jeff's activity and, for some reason he wrote one answer in 2016 but nothing before that for almost two years...
@Catija wouldn't have been surprised if Joel had mentioned it - I think he was blogging about the presidency and the whole call to action mess.
and I do suspect he's been pretty busy with discourse
3:58 AM
@Catija On Meta.SE. He posted on Meta.SO and elsewhere in the meantime. stackexchange.com/users/1/jeff-atwood?tab=activity

hah. Oddly I'm not surprised ;p

@OptimusPrime the thing about giant S duties was a joke ;p
(I didn't DL that.)
I was about to say "We need someone beat someone to death with a giant S(not really) for pluralisation bug reports"
I need some idea. Since It is downvoted these much, shall I really keep that question alive or make it deleted? (I didn't worried about rep. But if the community didn't agree with me, then there is no reason for me to keep that alive)
@OptimusPrime I suppose the big question is "is this a useful use of dev time?"
Does it make life any better?
it make S better. but for life, idk. and for dev time not sure. but writing a simple condition won't cost that much time
But I suggest the wording. The users who voted to close can be Those who voted to close
I didn't DV it ;p
(I did mock it. SLIGHTLY!)
DV is not a problem but if the community didn't agree with me, then there is no reason for me to keep the Q alive to waste the time of devs

Think its another experiment?
those edits do look kinda substancial

Is it ok if someone is able to star his message ?
While not really the same, is it okay if someone is able to upvote his comment?
@Desire in Israel all children get mumps vaccine for free at young age, as long as for few other nasty stuff.

server side validation
@ShadowWizard It's possible. Lemme show you how.
@TheLittleNaruto by pinning, yeah
Still, not the same.
9:35 AM
Yes that
@ShadowWizard Why not ?
Q: Chatroom owners can star their own messages

Kyle TraubermanI was able to star my own message by pinning it and unpinning it. Pinning a message adds a star, even to your own messages, but when the pin is removed, the star remains.

that;'s what
I tend to agree with what @balpha said, that it's just another power granted to RO and it's fine.
It's not an upvote. It gives no rep, no badge.
And if one is abusing it, mod/CM can take the RO from the user.
CM ?
Chief Minister ?
More serious abuse of pinned messages is that we can move them between rooms and they'll still be pinned.
9:39 AM
That I didn't know
So any room owner in any room can "pin" anything in any other room.
Try with Den/sandbox
I can't
I am not an RO
Now go pin a message in the sandbox :D
Thanks :)
@TheLittleNaruto community manager
9:48 AM
I see
@ShadowWizard but if someone did that they'd be somewhat likely to tee off the local RO/Mod
So there are community managers too
I got sour arms - I bought 20kg bag of carrots then I tried to drag it into my car (for someone else horses) and underestimated distance. Horses only saw a small part of those carrots though because afterwards I could only carry 5kg of it.
Q: Stars and pins are retained when chat messages are moved!

UnihedronIn the chat system, stars and pins are retained when moved to another room. This is probably a bug. @TheLittleNaruto yeah, Shog is one. Or maybe more fitting... The one. ;)
I wonder whether there is rage fit - like you rage, then you run 20km because of it ... and you rage a lot, then you get fit
@Telkitty heh, I carry 12kg water twice a week. From market to car, from car to home.
@ShadowWizard Shog is CM
9:51 AM
@TheLittleNaruto Shog's kinda the 9th among the shogs ;p
@Telkitty isn't that what you... liked to do?

@ShadowWizard Woah Tim and bluefeet are CM too
@TheLittleNaruto they are.
Maybe because network is not really growing anymore
@ShadowWizard there is a lot of difference between 12kg and 20kg ... :p

@Telkitty but you carry 20kg only once in long time, I carry 12 many times. ;)

@Telkitty not really... I'm really far from being strong. Such things tend to just break the muscles, not build them.
I can do those things of course, but those who really build their muscles can do x10 more without sweating a bit. lol
Ok You guys are talking about gymming

@TheLittleNaruto nope, the things we carry

@ShadowWizard ikr It was just an accident in which my ankle got dislocated and I had to undergo for a surgery
@TheLittleNaruto oh you mentioned it before... sorry to hear!

@ShadowWizard But now it is health condition which last at least for 2-3 months. Because of ankle surgery I had to undergo last month.
It's ok now

I'll start exercising very soon.

@Telkitty why didn't you just put the carrots in your travel bag?
May 23 at 14:00, by Telkitty
I actually walked home with a 3kg bag potato a few hours ago - if I could go hiking for 105km with 15kg bag back, I can carry a 3KG of potatoes and walk 20 minutes :p
15kg, almost 20. Better than 5... :)
@ShadowWizard It's Telkitty's fault.
@SmokeDetector What did she do...
Shirley you Kid.
10:57 AM
@ShadowWizard Do you how much space do 20kg carrots occupy? :p Besides, I bought it without giving too much thinking so it's not like I planned it ahead ...
11:11 AM
@Telkitty bought 20kg carrots out of spite.... Why?? Lol
coz I was going to visit the horses ...
@JourneymanGeek guess who closed and deleted it? ;)
most of the things, I don't plan too much ahead, I just do things >_<
Is it working well?
@TheLittleNaruto they send you some swag if you're an elected, not pro-tem mod. No pay
oh and stickers.
11:19 AM
@ShadowWizard yep, I have embarrased myself so many times, I don't feel much ashamed anymore ... besides you get more accomplished this way - just do it!
But you get the T shirt and stickers on a freshly graduated site with a design anyway, if you're in the first 2 pages of the userlist
@Telkitty lol... so no long term plans for you? :)
long term plans never worked for me - too much variables that's outside of my control
so only short and median terms
I do make strategical moves, but that's more like betting than a concrete 'plan' because I don't have control over market
11:25 AM
Wonder where starting a family fall? :)
e.g. meeting a possible partner is short term after all...
but planning kids isn't...
Though you can always skip several stages and adopt... even as single.
I only want kids because everyone else wants me to get kids
That's.... interesting. lol
Good response to someone pressing you to have kids, e.g. mother: "Fine, so go and bring me a kid!" :P
@Yve got few kids, maybe she can share with you? ;-)
You don't get it, if I want kids it's because I might miss out if I don't have them in certain time frame. But I never really craved for kids.
Baby sitting would be pretty much at bottom of preferred job category
11:33 AM
Being a parent is so much more than baby sitting...
I like to design of build useful things. I know I am weird
although I must admit, I am not as brutal as some of my female friends - who scream 'shut up' at other people's kids because the kids were too loud, lol
@Telkitty well, kids are useful. They grow and might make awesome things you never dreamed about. ;)
and you also build them, from scratch.
every one on the face of earth is/has been a kid once & I don't see whole lots of amazing things made
@Telkitty you're now using something amazing, no?
11:39 AM
I am pretty dumb and useless ... but ... I have high standards :p
Many kids follow their parents' lead, so maybe yours will also build apps, maybe better than you....
I am not thinking of building more new apps myself :p
13 mins ago, by Telkitty
I only want kids because everyone else wants me to get kids
@Telkitty isn't that what you do for living?
now you know what I meant :p
11:41 AM
@ShadowWizard no, $ more from property
ohh... so kind of real estate business.
yes ... and I have a couple of apps that I have made myself :p
@Telkitty yeah, like this? i.stack.imgur.com/bVSzB.jpg ;)
:') ... yes ...
why sad?
11:52 AM
Also, I am a very realistic person. Long term plannings are for dreamers :p
So all of this explains why you saw carrots being sold and decided "Hey, let's buy some for my horses"? ;)
1) not my horses 2) I planned to buy carrots, but I didn't plan to buy 20kg of it. It's my miscalculation to underestimated the distance to my car
I see. What happened to the 15kg you didn't take then? You just left it there?
Next time just ask for help, I'll come over. ;)
thanks :p the rest carrots are sitting in the kitchen right now :p
12:08 PM
also I bought 20kg because it's cheaper to buy bulk
and horse goes through food quickly
Yup they probably eat a lot...
12:29 PM
@Telkitty this is why we have pushcarts ;p
1 hour later…

@Narusan hey, how's Medical Sciences doing? You think it got a chance? (I did my "part", upvoted 5 questions and Following it :))
As a CM of SE, Do they write code as well ?
@TheLittleNaruto not really, though @Shog is JavaScript expert so he's writing stuff for self use, and also knows some SQL.
Sep 22 at 23:08, by Shog9
I have my own tools for pulling query results into JavaScript, analyzing votes, flags, etc.
2:21 PM
While not writing code for SE directly, they can write code to make their life easier and get some results faster. I think some other CM knows R
So As a CM you dont have to write code but will have to moderate the site.
@TheLittleNaruto nope, they don't moderate any site.
If anything, they moderate the moderators, in a way.
Then what are they for ?
I see
@TheLittleNaruto they're the link between SE the company and the users.
@ShadowWizard That's good. We can ask about any opening :P
2:23 PM
They also monitor all sites, as far as I know, and in case of really serious problem which is beyond the reach of moderators, they give a hand.
(or at least beta sites)
Thanks for the info

@SmokeDetector np
@quid Do you mean FAQ ?
@TheLittleNaruto no
3:01 PM
there is another page which include an I understood and a button to proceed
for first time askers on some sites
@quid /questions/ask/advice
@TheLittleNaruto ^^
@Shog9 thanks that's what I was after.
I have the first button of a new user question wizard working jsfiddle.net/TylerH/z1ah9q1b/10 hope to get a more or less complete demo/mockup to post on meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/357951/… soon
@OptimusPrime :)
3:04 PM
suggestions/comments welcome
@TylerH clicking on the rest of the buttons should say the user it is off topic to the site
may be a popover or an alert
@OptimusPrime that's what the "Something Else" button will do
will take them to the help center page on what questions to avoid asking or something
But looking for an algorithm is off topic. right?
The first four buttons' text is just a rough example; I built it at 2AM last night so I'm aware they're not the most topically-accurate
@OptimusPrime If you ask meta, it's not, but if you ask people who frequent the algorithm tag, it is (those two groups seem to be mutually exclusive)
from what I've seen the mods seem to give leeway to insular communities that have totally different interpretations of on-topic, like haskell or algorithm
but if you have replacement suggestions for some of the choices, I'm all ears
if you dig into my classnames, you'll see I lovingly refer to that button as gtk... gimme teh kodes :-)
anyway good work. The step by step wizard is a good idea
3:14 PM
Thanks, hope to get some more work done on it tonight, just hope it doesn't get drowned by the other gazillion suggestions on that meta.so thread that are already there
On second thought that meta question is asking about a template for the freeform Ask page, and @JonEricson has said they'll be looking at a wizard regardless; I may just post it in a separate question or something.
@Shog9 just curious are you still a part time CM? the blog post stackoverflow.blog/2011/03/25/… says that you've started as a part time cm
@TylerH I think make an answer. there are similar answers are posted already

Gavin42People must have dealt with static electrical discharge for thousands of years; well before they began to understand the principles of electricity. What would a static discharge be called in early modern English and old-English?

3:51 PM
@TylerH That's probably better. We'll probably ask a similar meta question when we are closer to building wizard prototypes, but no need to wait around for that.
Might be worth trying to set adviced=false for users that are about to be q-banned so they get routed back to /questions/ask/advice before they ask their next question?

@JonEricson you told that currently not focussing on attribution on question template. but that will be a good idea for new users to encourage giving proper attribution. right?
Dear @Facebook? why should I? without any promotion, without spending a single penny, it reached more than 5K audience in just 1 hour. then why should I spend $1 to reach just 700 people? I can achieve that in just 10 minutes within spending anything

5:45 PM
@ShadowWizard Regarding whether MedSci has a chance: I am positive, but before private beta I don't think we can tell. We've got a good share of quality questions, but the impetus has stalled a bit. It mostly depends how broad we can get the experts and laypeople to be, and how many participate. Right now, we've lost a bit impetus.
