@YvetteColomb to the extent that beginners need a q&a site, Stack Overflow is a good Stack Overflow for beginners. The problem we usually run into with beginners is that they need something other than a q&a site.

Mentors, tutors, introduction to the concept of research and debugging... Y'know, the stuff schools would teach if schools were interested in doing their damn jobs.

Creating a separate q&a site for the same topics is like taking a reference book and tearing out most of the pages. Yes, it's quicker to read, but that was never its purpose.

Prior to February 2013 questions without answers were more useful than now. Back then these could serve as duplicate targets. From this perspective it made solid sense to be careful about deleting old unanswered questions because these could make duplicate targets for newer ones. It made sense ...

Contrariwise - How does someone learn to use a Q&A site effectively?

For most of us - that's kinda accumilated over years and missteps and getting things right

but how do we distill that into something someone new can 1. get close enough to quickly enough to stay 2. grow into without the benefit of being able to make things up as we go along, since the sites are mature?
