meh
user202362
what if ... you release design updates on April fool's day?
@ShadowWizard i got a status update on the aforementioned pm. poor guy. he busted himself up pretty bad.
tripped at the top of his front stoop, all the way down, landed straight on his face. broke like 5 separate bones in his face, completely shattered his lower jaw, concussion, and a broken arm.
i think he's gonna be out for a minute.
he's also a pretty good friend of mine, separate from work, so i'm actually kinda worried about him. first round of surgery next week.

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad keyword with email in answer: At what point does "hacking" become illegal? (US) by Mandy Smith on security.SE
@JasonC poor guy... He got a spouse? Family? (i.e. someone with him at hospital)
his girlfriends there
girlfriends? Lucky guy! ;-)
I guess nothing helps you get out of the hospital faster like your girlfriend showing up and running into your other girlfriend.
3
out of the hospital and into hell
00:31
was gonna say "or into the hospital", but...
seems to me like it should be nothing helps you stay in the hospital.
@Jason also hope he got health insurance? From what I heard about your medical system, without it one might have to pay tons of money when hospitalized... 💰
yeah...
i don't know
Anyhow, hope he will get through this soon!
and i didn't ask
it's one of those questions that makes things worse, heh
if he doesn't, it's gonna be a nightmare
00:42
@JasonC yup, your vet bill will be minor compared to it...
pennies
on the plus side i recently learned that apparently medical debt doesn't permanently affect your credit score. once you pay it off it's like it never happened.
And how is the project going?
@JasonC credit score?
projects still in initial phases. today i had a fun interaction that was pretty much along the lines of: dude: "we can't do that without significant development costs and like 6 months of development, blah blah i'm an angry half-programmer". me: "hey, so, last weekend, i did it. it took about 2 hours. here.". dude: no response. client: "this is awesome."
@Telkitty only if it's Tuesday
@JasonC lol... I mean... LOL
But who is that dude??
a guy
who i can't really explain without explaining the entire project, which, sorry.
00:47
Lol no worry just wonder what is his role in the project :)
But judging from this, you're going to have lots of fun in this project... ;)
he's a graphics guy, i guess. visualization, vr. does a lot of non-c++ dev stuff in unreal engine.
the component in question was an unreal engine module
it's the same old project for me
user202362
BTW, my avatar isn't exactly a teeth floss advertisement
same shit, same old client, same issues, same process.
@JasonC but you are there as a programmer, right?
yes, primarily
and some systems integration/design work for certain parts of this project. and some quasi-consulting.
it's complicated and you're nosy.
i gotta say this particular project is kinda cool, though. i'll tell you about it when it's public.
00:53
More picky than nosy... And noisy with pings. @Jason
no
just nosy
own it
lol
what country are you in
Israel
2:55 AM
oh it is public
17 bridges; they all have to sync up, too. not sure how yet. i'm talking to one of the coordinators over there next week i'm really, really hoping that for some odd reason they just happen to have 6 miles of fiber already laid out between them.
user202362
01:03
@JasonC when I was in London for 3 months, I constantly walked across 3 of its bridges, because I lived next to the london eye and offices were near bank & liverpool street stations
user202362
I used to love travel a lot, but that's when I was early 20s
user202362
The more I travel, the less I like to travel, nowadays, travel only wins slightly over boredom.
@Telkitty i feel like i got similarly jaded at some point, i'm not sure when it happened
i think it's because i usually travel for work, which generally entails going to yet another large city, and everything sort of feels the same
what i need is more proper vacations to interesting places
2 messages moved to Chimney
@JasonC nice! Looks like a complicated challenge... So you were also involved in the San Francisco project of the same artist?
@JasonC Tel Aviv of course
@ShadowWizard yes i did all the overall system design, all the software, some of the it, and a bunch of debugging that Philips (the lighting is all ColorKinetics) really should have paid me for for the sf project.
will be similar here
this is project-manager-who-got-hurt's first major project for this client so i also sort of have to have this weird, separate, consulting hat in addition to my developer hat. i'm both above and below him in the chain. it's super weird.
user202362
I am doing the Tarkine trail in Tasmania next month, then plan to swing by Yellowstone national park and Niagara falls 1-2 months after that.
@ShadowWizard thebaylights.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/02.jpg (from thebaylights.org) -- some of my software made a photo cameo
@Telkitty that sounds really nice
user202362
Speaking of which, what area should I stay if come to NY that's accessible within 30 minutes commute to NYC, with great public transport facility and not too dangerous? 4/5 star hotels in Manhattan is probably going to cost an arm and leg.
user202362
I have stayed on long island before, but that's in the opposite direction to Niagara falls
01:36
@Telkitty well it depends on what you mean by "nyc" and "30 minute commute".
are you trying to stay in nyc itself? and by "nyc" do you mean manhattan or are you counting the rest of the city?
note that it's about a 2.5 hour commute from one end of the city to the other, without ever leaving nyc. so it's a complicated question, lol.
user202362
2.5 hour commute? by walking? @_@
user202362
30 minutes commute by subway or bus I meant
and yeah definitely don't stay in manhattan. tbh for nyc stays i'd go airbnb, and look for a spot in brooklyn, near williamsburg or perhaps cobble hill or park slope. it's great here. if you wanna stay in manhattan look for a spot in east village or west village.
@Telkitty well more like two hours. but by train lol.
rockaway park to inwood, 1:50 by train, god knows by car.
rockaway park, queens, to wakefield, bronx. 2:23 by subway and that's the google maps estimate, so add 30 minutes, lol.
all in city limits. because woohoo new york.
@Telkitty but really, airbnb. if you stay in lower manhattan you'll have easy car access north and west, and it's cake to get to grand central or penn station for trains. if you stay in brooklyn, go for something near the brooklyn/manhattan/williamsburg bridge. williamsurg is a fun neighborhood. anything down there will get you easy car access west and easy subway access to a train station. that's my official advice.
user202362
sounds like Sydney vs great Sydney
user202362
sydney cbd is like 2km x 3km, great sydney is like 150km x 200km
user202362
01:46
@JasonC cool, thanks. will keep that in mind while go airbnb
red areas are accessible, safe, and give you a nice nyc experience without the insane times square style tourism.
most of the city is pretty safe until you get farther out in brooklyn.
@Telkitty PS if you stay in manhattan, check out the bike trails along the west side up the hudson. they go forever. all the way upstate if you want.
now if you want to stay out of the city, go north
if you want quiet
like a little hotel in tarrytown or something. but you'll have way more fun in the city.
user202362
long island is a great place to live, yes
a really good friend of mine lives out there in some beautiful house with a little private community beach, its awesome
its beautiful way out towards the end of it

A moderator stepping down quietly is nothing unusual, but two at a time?
user310756
oh no, who's stepping down
user315433
02:54
Ben Brocka and Rahul left UX mod-ship. The former still has "I'm a moderator on User Experience Stack Exchange." in the profile.
user310756
ah ok. That's a big loss for your site
user315433
And Gaz Winter is no longer a mod on Poker. A diamond-killing epidemic of some sort.
There may be a sort of scheduled task that influences such things
user310756
Well I know all the unis are starting up for the year over here now
03:10
@zaq One moderator stepping down is boring. Two at a time is twice as boring.

user202362
this was taken last Sunday when the tenant dumped everything next to the footpath. Noticing the blue sign wasn't there?
user202362
My dad was in the picture, we had to move everything back into the front yard because neighbours rang and complained about it.
user315433
03:54
If I see a question and think "another one of those", I could spend a couple of minutes looking for a duplicate and then enjoy the misguided hope that my closevote won't expire, while trying not to think that I'm being someone's unpaid research assistant. Or I could downvote and move on. Decisions, decisions...

@Stijn yup

Q: What is a "locked" post?

Justin StandardA post can be locked. What does it mean to lock a post? Who can lock a post? When should a post be locked? Return to FAQ index

I've never locked a post as a SU mod
14:30
@JourneymanGeek was that meant for me or for @ShadowWizard :p
._.
@ShadowWizard ^
@Stijn my bad. :(
I was really confused at first hehe
I expect autocomplete to read my mind sometimes ;p
@JourneymanGeek Yes you have
Indirectly
-I have locked a post on super user and I'm not even a real member
@Magisch directly, to deal with a problem ;p
14:35
its so boring without spam to nuke :(
@SamsungNote7Plus charcoal has recently become more efficient
so barely any SD posts make it to the tavern anymore
What changed?
@Stijn I think smokey gets 3 flags
@Magisch i have both rooms on
which reduces the amount of actual human flagging needed
and smokey feeds into spamram anyway
14:38
The bot user account has a super-flag then?
Metasmoke will use user information to cast up to 3 fully automatic spam flags against posts
Least I don't think so
So we only need 3 more to kill a post
Assuming a mod dosen't see it ;p
14:38
time to deletion of spam has gone down 70% overnight
in which case we kill the post and the account
@Stijn No. People give metasmoke their API write keys so the software casts flags on their behalf
ah I see
24 people have given their keys to MS for that reason
You limit it to 3 to have a real human double check it?
14:40
Thats what CMs will permit atm
@Stijn which is a good idea ;p
We're planning on 5 later but never enough to nuke something with just autoflagging
it's borderline to flagging ring, must be very careful though
We have CM permission
that is we asked beforehand and a CM gave us explicit permission
@qwer I'm slightly more concerned with having no eyeballs on a post at all than a flagging ring
14:43
Fake! Fake news! Alternative facts! Rogue flagging going on here!
Also only posts where we can be at least 99,5% statistically sure it's real spam get autoflagged
If you can come up with a bot that posts good answers, I'll gladly give you my API key :p
sometimes we have dispute over what's spam anyway
so our autoflagging flags a lot better then most people
Its no different from tossing in a post into chat for people to see until the autoflags happen
@qwer which is where the human element is nice
14:43
@qwer Thats why we dont let the software nuke posts outright
at least 1 human has to confirm, always
I agree with that
and the filters and behavior of the bot is also coded by humans
We contribute spam filters
We have a massive database of over 45000 confirmed spam posts to run predictive heuristics against
there are also automatic safety checks involved to ensure the bot doesnt run haywire
@JourneymanGeek and @ShadowWizard -- I have to admit I did not know that...

Does anyone have a better name for Documentation Stack Exchange, a proposed site that's entirely different from Stack Overflow Documentation? Awaiting proposal approval — but we need another name!
@zaq technical writing?
@zaq rename the SO product, obviously.
@Bart isn't technical writing more like articles on technical stuff than documentation?
It's a fairly broad term that can include documentation. It depends a bit on the exact scope of the proposed site. (And I haven't read up on it at all, so yeah ...)
I mean it's better than anything I can think of.
"Stuff nobody will read"?

19:47
Rename to Teams, that has unshipped ...
@Bart they claim they are not that ...
@ɥʇǝS I gather the SO product was the impetus for proposing the site in the first place. I'm worried this is doomed to the same path as Moderators Community Building.
Pff, what do they know @rene
@JonEricson Probably will. I personally wonder if it is really quantifiable enough.
@JonEricson they'll just have to wait a little longer until Documentation will inevitably fail ... #postivethinking #constructivecomments :p
Or, we could force them to use Technical Writing while we rename our product to Examples.
user315433
19:56
Technical writing is already covered by Writers anyway
"So where I said Documentation I'll change it to Examples. And Technical Writing, which was Documentation will be Documentation again. And Writers will stay Writers. Stop the time."
