What drives my ambition is a desire to help people. I am not independently wealthy, but I do donate a lot of time and money to helping people.

@Derpy is this what you drink every morning?
@SmokeDetector f
@ShadowWizard Actually, I don't even drink coffee in the first place.
I prefer tea
@Derpy o/ Tea
@Derpy green tea?
8:50 AM
@ShadowWizard ^ that said, most of the time it is just green tea bags
@Derpy hot, I assume? I love cold tea, we got many variations here. :)
I like peppermind and green tea
In fact, since I've gone cold turkey on pepsi light, I've been drinking inordinate amounts of peppermind tea
Too late to edit
@ShadowWizard mostly
8:58 AM
@Derpy Have you ever had pepsi light?
I used to drink it like water and stopping to drink it feels like what people describe withdrawal symptoms like
IMO all those light/zero are worse than the original. No sugar, right, but tons of harmful chemicals instead.
Sugar is natural.
Its even more insidious then that
The sugar replacement stuff tricks your body into believing it just got sugar, leading to an insulin spike without sugar to accomodate it
But anyway, I don't like mint, never did.... with one exception of mint chocolate. ;)
Means you get a fast, hard sugar crash when drinking that. You become super hungry, and super fatigued.
@Magisch really??? Never heard about that, hard to believe....
9:00 AM
And it'll get you diabetes faster then normal soda will
I noticed just how infinitely less tired I was after cutting that stuff
and less hungry
@Magisch maybe it's not affecting everyone like that, keep in mind you got "special" body, with reactions to some kinds of food, no?
but I talked to a friend of mine who is in med school
And he said for dietary purposes and general well being it would be less harmful for me if I drank the same amount in sugary soda
I had my share of diet/light drinks, don't remember any bad effect, I just realized the original tastes better and I don't care for the sugar. :)
In any case, not drinking that stuff has generally made me feel better, be less hungry and less tired overall.
That said, I cut my sugar consumption in coffee: used to have 2 teaspoons of sugar in every cup, now it's only 0.5 - lots of calories saved! ;)
9:05 AM
And after a few days of what felt like withdrawals drinking water instead is just fine
and tea
copious amounts of tea
How long ago all that happened?
3 some weeks
oh, recently...
9:21 AM

@Bart yeah, saw that as well. Dunno why though. Maybe @balpha can tell?

@balpha so nothing changed? Why would it ask me again? I log in each and every day.
I don't know, usually Google doesn't ask you again once you've given permission. Did you clean up your connected apps recently or something like that?
no idea then
maybe google re-asks you once every so-long?
Perhaps, but I seem to understand that @ShadowWizard had the same thing appear? Anyway, not a huge deal, just surprising.
@balpha might be, but maybe you changed something in the OAuth code on your side? Can you poke Adam? :)

Is there an admin who could migrate some questions?
I dunno why but a lot of my questions that were on MSO ended up on MSO.
@Knu community admins here are mostly asleep right now
All of these were wrongly migrated from MSO.
They were perfectly on topic there BTW.
They belong there.
@Knu umm... no. None of them has been migrated. What make you think that??
MSE was MSO until few years ago.
now that makes sense
12:00 PM
If anything, you can request migration from MSE to MSO but it won't be of any real use for such old questions.
but closing these questions as off topic make it seems you did something wrong
yeah that's what I am requesting

@Knu nothing wrong, it's just a sign for others, to post such questions in MSO.

1:27 PM
Is Sergey serious about his nomination, or is he just trolling?
@Bart why trolling?
Barely any nomination text. Weird answers to the questions asked, circumventing them completely in some cases. Given that he has done this whole thing 3 times now (I think), I'd expect something different.
maybe he thinks that election is like lottery, the more entries you make, higher chance you get to win
Hah, perhaps. I'm just surprised.
@Bart I see it as "I don't really care if I'll be elected or not, just want to try" - he's serious about it, but unlike all others, don't really care. He'll make fine moderator as far as I can see, it's just that he's not really... keen about it.
1:37 PM
Okay, fair enough
I did a grammar and spelling pass on my answers to the questions, and changed some formulations
1:53 PM
@Telkitty Wait, wasn't "lottery" defined as "game where the chances of winning don't change if you decide to take part in the game or not"?
@Derpy probably means that the chances of winning in lottery are zero, so it doesn't really matter if you actually take part or not, you'll never win. ;)

> ...and cannot have been suspended during the past year.
This line wasn't on the election page yesterday...
And now it retroactively appears on all elections dating back to 2011.
The early start of Q&A collection changed the dynamics of nominations: we got a bunch from those who thought about it during the "preview" week, and now there's a lull.
One of the current candidates, only two ran before - Andy and Sergey K., both twice.
4:11 PM
Hmm . Think anyone would vote for me in the SO elections?
So far, 149 distinct users ran for SO mod. Their alphabetized list begins with @AaronHall and ends with Zaheer Ahmed.
@amanaPlanaCAnalPAnaMA why not
slugster holds the record with 7 attempts, that is, every election except this one (so far).
Only two other candidates tried more than 3 times: Madara Uchiha and Moshe.
4:17 PM
17 people ran three times, and 8 of them were elected on the third try.
@Bart I am not a good writer, but I believe I can do good.
You ran before, right?
Yes. and was shut down both times.
So I gave up.
I see three attempts: elections 2, 3, 4.
4:20 PM
Unless it was some other Neal.
So if you feel like running again, look at the responses for those times and see how you can improve your nomination.
Ahh three. forgot about one of them. Where do you get that info @zaq ?
@Bart where do I see that?

and how do I get there?

Use 0 for the index while an election is active.
Do I answer questions first or do the nomination first?
This is confusing
Normally, nomination first. This is how it had to be done in the past, when Q&A was posted after nominations were closed.
I suppose it can be either way, unless Grace has a policy of deleting responses from anyone who's not nominated...
4:31 PM
@ShadowWizard To be fair, I blame the writers for not having a famous female submarine captain too, and you for assuming I was the one with the beard.
What if I meant I am the submarine in the background?
@zaq took me two times
Yes. One of eight mods elected on 2nd try: animuson, bluefeet, casperOne, Ed Cottrell, Gordon, jjnguy, Matt, meagar.
Seven were elected on 3rd try: Andrew Barber, Brad Larson, Flexo, George Stocker, Jeremy Banks, Jon Clements, Ryan.
And Madara Uchiha is the only one elected on the 4th try.
4:35 PM
Interesting stats. I wonder how it will play out.
notices @zaq somehow looks like a creeper, wonders if @bjb568 somehow looking like an ocelot would be enough to keep him from exploding
@zaq Correction: eight were elected on the 3rd try, I forgot Undo.
How can you forget the Tavern's favorite dog? @Undo
4:53 PM
The probability of being elected is 14% on the first try, 38% on the second, 47% on the third, 50% on the fourth, and then it drops down to 0%. (If we think that probability = frequency of happening in the past, which we shouldn't.)
blah 65 charaters over the limit.

@AaronHall I commented to Benjamin, feel free to remove your comments about where you work.
You might ask Benjamin if that is used for personal interest or somehow related to being/becoming a mod?
You can't be a mod if you teach at Harvard

Yeah, I know we can be totally anonymous but I went the other way - which can be kinda tricky.
I do recall that Brad Larson got phone calls to his workplace from angry users ...
@AaronHall It has one advantage for a moderator candidate. You've already posted everything in the full knowledge that it can come back to you professionally.
@rene There was an entire MSE post, quite recently, about the harassment that moderators receive.
And Brad has handed out a lot of review suspensions. Which is why he's one of my favorite moderators.

@AaronHall Yes.
Q: Make moderator messages anonymous

Sometimes a user needs to be gently reminded to be nicer in comments, or to disclose when they're advert...

@bluefeet Ah yes, that one! And maybe one linked by it, also.
In retrospect, we should have added that to the questionnaire... "Are you prepared to deal with off-site harassment and doxxing?"
Maybe phrased a bit different, as "harassment" may imply physical violence... which AFAIK hasn't happened yet. But we should not understate the off-site problems a moderator may get.
"Are you prepared to..." questions aren't that useful if nobody is answering "Nope, totally not ready for that."
6:39 PM
@zaq Fair point. Might want to phrase it differently.
The underlying question is "are you aware that you can get a lot of off-site nastiness from vengeful users".
But that would be a bit of a yes/no question.
A: "Now I am, having read the question."
Mission accomplished. Also, nomination revoked....
@S.L.Barth revoked? Why?
@ShadowWizard It was in response to the hypothetical situation. AFAIK there are no revoked nominations yet.

If one revokes their nomination, can they nominate themselves again?
@ShadowWizard Indecision is not a good look for a mod candidate.
@JonEricson So... the system allows it, but it's discouraged?
I have no idea. My guess is that re-nominations are blocked so that when we revoke one, the user doesn't come back. But that's a WAG of the first order.

Scientific wild-ass guess (SWAG) is American slang meaning a rough estimate made by an expert in the field, based on experience and intuition. It is similar to the slang word guesstimate, a portmanteau of guess and estimate. == History == The slang term "SWAG" is generally thought to have originated in the US military, either the Army or the Air Force. Journalist Melvin J. Lasky wrote that it was first used casually by US Army General William Westmoreland during the Vietnam War.
