@Geochet Didn't mean to; but it's something I've been thinking about and the EE people bringing it up today just made me realize that I'm not the only one to think about it.
@GeorgeStocker I realize this. It is a pretty sane question IMO, and you being a long time respected member of the community should have given you the benefit of the doubt in intentions.
@GEOCHET Actually I think the remark was made because George is a long time avid user. "I'm sure nothing of this is news to you, but I'll enumerate it anyway"
@badp I guess what confused me was that even though I'd previously written on the subject ( meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/133/… ), he acted like I had no idea about it. To distill the question down to its bare essentials: How the heck can 50% revenue from Jobs, Ad revenue, and Careers make enough money to make a company long-term profitable?
@GEOCHET Reminds me of the Ah! My Goddess movie. Heaven is a computer program written by God, and angels can activate powerful world-altering programs by singing.
@GeorgeStocker Regardless, how about he either answers it or doesn't? Isn't the basis of the SO theory that no question is too trivial because we are supposed to be a repository?
@GEOCHET I never expected a 'these are the numbers' sort of answer from him. I was hoping that someone familiar with the industry would clue me in as to something I'm missing because conceptually it doesn't seem like it could be sustainable. I'm also really ignorant on the subject (which is part of the reason why I asked).
Not really. They usually operate on negative margins, just recently turned it around, but they'll swing back into negative once their royalty fees go up again next year, and the year after, and the year after.
@GEOCHET well you may disagree, but, your rational explanation of the edit wars does make a good case against you being a simple troll. I understand having strong opinions. I have more respect for you because of your well worded statements.
Dear "big content." You have the customers. You have the content. Your costumers want your content. What do you do then? You give them a middle finger. What is your business model?
Before they accepted VC, I thought I was clued in, but after the VC; my complete understanding turned upside down. It goes from being an organic business to having pressures to make numbers so that the board of directors stays happy.
POF e-mails me all the time that someone wants to meet me. The e-mail contains my plain text password. I log in and have no new messages. It's a bad site, run by a psycopathic liar.
@GEOCHET That was true when the internet was still disconnected from real life; but now the Internet and my Real life are interconnected. The stuff that happens on here affects me personally and professionally.
Does anyone else remember when BluRay first came out? There was a demo at Best buy that showed A Knight's Tale and kept sweeping across the screen with DVD on the left and bluray on the right?

I spent christmas with Evan Carroll and Rich B.. sitting around the fire drinking delicious hot cocoa and reminiscing about the good times.. sigh.. the good times
