However, when the external images are deleted on the host site, then the images in the blog also get broken, and the whole blog post gets kind of confusing and sometimes, pointless :(

if a post owner links a dead image, then they're to blame and it doesn't matter

I don't have much feedback, other than "this beats removing tags on a whim unvetted by anyone who might actually care"

I don't like useless tags, but bad tags bother me a lot less than seeing someone's interest obliterated because some kid never encountered it and couldn't imagine himself caring.
