Q: How do you attach a new pull request to an issue on github?

MatrixFrogI'm not sure, but I have a vague memory of creating a github pull request with "Issue 4" or something in the title, and it automatically attached itself to Issue 4 in the project that I was submitting it to. I tried it again recently and it didn't work -- it just created a brand new issue instead...

(@RebeccaChernoff, if it isn't answered by the time you come back)

Dunno. I know you can close an issue with a commit. But that's a bit different than what the OP is asking for.

Oh, is it? I thought that's what he wanted, I must have misread.

Merry Christmas @TylerChacha
I just got back home from x-mas eve dinner & presents.. it was a good year ;)

I'm doing lights for a Christmas Eve service
Currently the sermon is happening..

Grrr... I'm getting this error from jQuery:
Error: Permission denied for <http://chat.meta.stackoverflow.com> to get property Object.constructor from <>.
Source File: ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4.2/jquery.min.js
Line: 27
I'm not entirely sure if I get Prism's security model

Though I'm a little skeptical of that code since the date in the email says "November 25", and clearly it's supposed to be December...heh.

5:36 AM
@TimStone .. not sure which worked but i did dotd1125ccb and dotd1225ccb
and I have the discount.

Ah, nice. :)

ah it said 1225 was it

\o/ for predictable discount codes

Heheh, but boo for off-by-one errors ;)

I'll get C# in Depth for the skeet-ness of it all.

5:38 AM
I still haven't gotten through the first chapter...
But already (and I should have known this before) it's so clear that C# beats the crap out of Java.

Hmm, I really want to commit the userscript, but I don't want to mess up the revision history. ):
Stupid dilemmas.

cool... ordered the physical book.. free ebook instantly delivered.

Yeah, I love Manning for that. :D
@RebeccaChernoff Let's shake our fists at Visual Studio. :p

<3 VS2010.

I'd love it more if it didn't try and flatten project structures :P

5:46 AM
You've handily beaten me twice now... I seek revenge.

Hahah ;)
@Fosco Those that fell before you ;)

@TimStone lol nice work!

grrrrrrrr vs / kdiff
blames @TimStone

Hahah, I'm pretty sure this isn't my fault ;)

VS was happy til I added you to the repo and you committed.
hides q:

5:53 AM
Hah! I'm still not convinced. :p
So what's VS doing that's making kdiff angry?

I think there's an extra semicolon or brace because VS is indenting half the file one less indent than it should.
everything from var Selectors on down should be indented one more level
oh wait, more than that.

Hmm

ok, got it to think i haven't changed the entire file
it didn't like an empty set of braces on different lines? |:

Oh, the ctrl bit?

also apparently i've removed an isCtrl function hrm
@TimStone yeah

6:01 AM
...That's pretty lame. :P
@RebeccaChernoff :o

If GitExtensions lets me commit, we're good.
But it seems to be freezing up. ):
And by seems to...I mean... |:

Things don't seem to be cooperating today :P

There's an update to GE I haven't run yet. Perhaps that is related? shrugs

Could be, I suppose. Though I'd be a bit surprised if the program was holding out on you just because you hadn't updated it.

True. But this has been working for me for awhile.

6:15 AM
Hmm, also, weird that you didn't have any issues with Visual Studio before now.
I removed the contents of the ctrl thingadongdong 7 weeks ago.
And you've edited that file since then at least once, when you removed my console.log(), heh.

I think somewhere between resetting changes to try and get things fixed I may have messed that up.
function isCtrl should be there though?

Yeah
Did you forget to update to the latest version before making changes? :p

alright, commit is pushed.

\o/

@TimStone It yells at you if you do a commit like that. It didn't yell at me. So I'll say no. q:

6:20 AM
Heheh, well looks good from where I sit

Hopefully the desktop notifications even work. q:

Let's find out.

The Prism thingadongdong is working! Yay!

w00t!
Someone ping me, yeah?

@TimStone

6:23 AM
Hmm
@RebeccaChernoff Does it only work in certain circumstances?
Also, thanks @YiJiang

@TimStone Sure thing

Hmm, again?

@TimStone

Yeah, I'm not seeing anything. :P

@TimStone You're suppose to see something asking for your permission, eh

6:25 AM
Yeah...hrm
Oh, I see, there's supposed to be a button that shows up...Hmm.
Ah, it was my bad.
OK, someone ping me again please.

@TimStone

Awesome, thanks.

I left for the first time in...ever, and the Unix design got posted

That's what you get for leaving. ;) Hmmmm
I'm trying to figure out what I think of the design, heh. I'm a bit unsure about the serif fonts for the buttons, but I suppose that's due to my personal hatred for serif fonts on screens in general.

@TimStone I was rather "meh" too, but I'm going to look at it more when I'm not really tired before I leave feedback

These notifications are so cool...heh. </side note> Yeah, that seems like a reasonable idea. Oh wow, look at the time too...hm.

Notifications?

7:52 AM
@RebeccaChernoff added opt-in HTML5 notifications to the chat userscript (Chrome only, due to lack of support), so if the window isn't focused and you're @-mentioned, a thing pops up in the corner of the desktop with the message.

Oh, awesome. I love those in Google Calendar

Yeah, it's pretty nifty.

8:18 AM
@TimStone Dammit, now I need to get the userscript, along with everything else

Hahah. In other news, I had forgotten how much I despite NFS Undercover's handling. Thank god EA had the sense to take NFS away from Black Box. :P

Eclipse questions go to SO or Programmers?

@radp Probably SO.

I'm not sure I like the idea of splitting the site into SO and Programmers

@GregHewgill Splitting is the whole point of SE

8:28 AM
@GeorgeMarian Seconded

Good, this means I can instead put a bounty on an existing question.

Q: C code autocomplete in Eclipse

IttaiHi, I'm a Java developer and I've downloaded the Eclipse for C (course purposes) and to my amazement the control+space shortcut (for autocomplete) did not work. I've created a new project and a new class using the wizzards and started to type "print" and then tried to find an autocomplete feature...

I thought I understood what the difference between SO and P.SE was, until Jeff's announcement that P.SE is out of beta

Isn't Programmers for questions about the social, the organizational and the architectural/design side of programming?

8:43 AM
@radp That sounds about right.

I guess I draw a line between technical and non-technical topics, and architecture/design seems technical to me

@GregHewgill It depends on the nature of the discussion.

8:57 AM
yes, of course.. I just don't quite understand where the line is drawn at the moment :0

9:48 AM
@Greg I like to think about SE sites in terms of audience, rather of topics.
So if programmers can answer you better than software engineers, I'd ask on SO; otherwise I'd ask on Programmers.
(My question above was caused by having succesfully asked tools question on Programmers, however.)

10:11 AM
(...and somehow the above uploaded quite quickly.)

10:24 AM
yay, now Eclipse autocompletion works.
I know it works, not because I can autocomplete, but because now when I ctrl-space I don't get an empty list but an Eclipse hang.

@radp Ha :P

10:49 AM
wait, so SO is for programmers, but Programmers.SE is for software engineers?

@GregHewgill Erm... what do you mean by that? Aren't software engineers a type of programmer?

11:42 AM
I was thinking in a sensible world, the "Programmers" site would be for programmers, rather than the way it is now

11:54 AM
Testing DOMNodeInserted event. If this works this could be quite interesting
Well this clearly isn't going to work...

@YiJiang No way in hell.

The problem is that the event is fired for every node inserted, and each message consists of a dozen or more nodes, so there's far too many event calls

you could filter on the one node you do care about?
keeping in mind that monologues may rain on your party

@radp Possibly. I'll try looking at the event data

say you talk a lot
and then some
and then some more

11:59 AM
@radp Yeah yeah yeah... I've already unbinded, so you don't have to keep providing me with test data
> Be very careful with this event it is easy to cause an infinite loop if you decide to change the DOM inside the event handler.
Ha!

I just wanted to get you from single message to reps added
I just wanted to get you from single message to reps added

Right, now let's see if this works
Another one
Grr... not very well
Alright, I got it working with this code:
$('#chat').bind('DOMNodeInserted', function(evt){
    if(evt.target.classList.contains('message') && !evt.target.classList.contains('pending')){
        console.log(evt.target);
    }
});
I noticed that Firefox had implemented the classList object, so I thought I might as well use it

@balpha What jQuery plugins are used by chat?

There's some at the top of the chat js iirc.

@RebeccaChernoff Don't see any other than jQuery 1.4.2
I want to override chat's minified jQuery source with a unminified version for debugging purposes, but I'm not sure if that will break anything
Oh, this makes my day:

not the jquery.min.js file, but the chat.js file. scrollTo, cookie. Could be others, I just glanced.

@RebeccaChernoff scrollTo's definitely used, but I don't see any sort of license declaration like the one at the top of the jQuery file

Iunno. >_<
Well, jQuery is coming from the Google's CDN.

Working with Prism so far is akin to... banging my head onto my table. Repeatedly.
It's amazing how much more true this has become over the course of actually trying to do something with Prism

Heh.
I committed the desktop notifications for Chrome users if you're interested in checking that out.

I mean, it's just... bad. The documentation sucks, the low level APIs are not exposed in a clean and easy method, and the environment is... weird
Why can't they just stick the Jetpack API into this and be done with it? wiki.mozilla.org/Labs/Jetpack

Though I still need to do the explicit reply regex. What are all the rules that translates a display name into the notification name?
I should look for the chat function, hrm.

And there's no real way to debug in this Prism environment.
@RebeccaChernoff What method are you using to listen for new messages? Livequery, I'm guessing?

aye
Userscript already had a livequery on the messages to add the id and timestamp, so just added the if block to that.

3:37 PM
The Prism environment is weird. It's sort of like the browser environment, but code running in it also seems to be semi-protected, like GM scripts
It's causing jQuery to malfunction, throwing up hundreds of errors like this:
Warning: reference to undefined property f.queue
Source File: ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4.2/jquery.min.js
Line: 139
And this:
Warning: reference to undefined property a[b]
Source File: ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4.2/jquery.min.js
Line: 38

Heh.
When do you jump ship for Chrome?
And I'm not just saying that because I like Chrome.
But this seems to be a hell of a lot of hoops to jump through.

@RebeccaChernoff There's no real equivalent in Chrome, ya know

Er? Chrome has application shortcuts that run it like a desktop app with its own tray icon, own window.

@RebeccaChernoff Prism is more than that
At least it should be

Such as?

3:43 PM
The .webapp package can contain custom CSS and JavaScript that will have the same privilege as add-ons, which mean that they can do stuff like writing to filesystem or access clipboard
At least, that's how it's suppose to work

Why does chat need access to the filesystem or clipboard?

@RebeccaChernoff I'm talking about Prism generally, not the Prism chat app

Are you doing this to play with Prism or to get chat running in Prism?

@RebeccaChernoff Both. Chat already runs in Prism fine. I just want to test out how Prism work

Still, it just seems that for Chat, you're spending a lot of time banging your head against the wall on things that it won't support or doesn't support in a decently well way. Just looking in from the outside. shrugs

@TylerChacha Merry Christmas
@RebeccaChernoff I fixed the permissions button for you, btw :p
Also it seems when F5-ing the page if I've been mentioned in prior messages I get a lot of notifications, not sure if there's any way around that though given how the chat loads content.

@TimStone You could run the script only after the 'Loading <room name>' box disappears

Yeah, I'll look into it more if she doesn't have any ideas for it.
Also, WTF? They're copying our thingadongdongs now too!?

@TimStone Erm... no - it's a post containing the word 'thingadongdong'
The weird thing is that the original question on SO doesn't get nearly as much Google Juice as the scrapers

@YiJiang It's a Christmas miracle!
(Yes, clearly I'm not reading chat in any particular order..)

@TimStone 3 flags now, so back to normal :P

It didn't remove itself correctly. :)

Hrm, it didn't?

@Greg I did:

Q: How can I optimize this loop?

MosheI've got a piece of code that returns a super-long string that represents "search results". Each result is represented by a double HTML break symbol. For example: Result1<br><br>Result 2<br><br>Result3 I've got the following loop that takes each result and puts it in...
