Testing DOMNodeInserted event

3:28 AM
Right, I need somebody to say something. Anyone?
Grrr... this is why I need my own sock puppet

Sorry.
I tabbed out.

Right

Something specific?

No, hang on. It isn't working
I turned off the check for own user id so that my own messages should also trigger the notification

Ah, kay.

4:00 AM
Is the Tavern always this quiet on weekends?
Half the place is Jewish, not like we're all busy celebrating Xmas.

@Moshe Wait, how do you know that half the place is Jewish?

Well, let's see...
Me, @TheUnhandledException, @RebeccaChernoff
that's three

@Moshe Well, it's not half by a long shot. But I'm an atheist, so...

Three is enough, besides, dare I say that we make the most noise here?
@YiJiang - Not here to convince or convert.

@Moshe Hmmm... nope

4:03 AM
@YiJiang - Well, I make a lot of noise here, please
I think @DanGrossman might be too, with a jewish sounding name
Dunno about the rest.

@Moshe Is Grossman a traditional Jewish name? I don't think so, but... erm...

traditional?

@Moshe Well, you said it sounds Jewish. I'm not sure what to make of that

I don't want to get into cultural stereotyping, but it sounds Jewish.
Many Jews came to the US from Europe in the mid 1900s
so a lot of European sounding names can be Jewish
but besides from that, in Europe, Jews were often segregated in the workplace and beyond. The last names that they took on when people started with last names often reflected their occupation
@YiJiang - names that end stein, man, berg etc.
Either based on location, or occupation
similar to American names ending in son
Johnson, for example
Anyway, it's still awfully quiet here.

@Moshe It is, yes

4:12 AM
okay, I;m out. G'nite

@Moshe 'nite

4:38 AM
I need a web graphics designer...

@Fosco It's usually just 'Web Designer'
Anyway, you might want to start with something like: sortfolio.com

@YiJiang My bad.. You're right :)
@YiJiang Pricey!

@Fosco You get what you pay for :P

Really just looking for a relatively simple template..
(famous last words(?))

@Fosco For?

4:42 AM
browsing template monster right now.. not too pleased.

Pre built templates like these aren't really very good unless all you're doing is operate a personal blog

@YiJiang A site I am dying to put up... can't go into too much detail. users would sign up and complete guided surveys and upload pictures and videos..
I am capable of all the code, just need a sharp visual to go with it.
Thanks for the suggestion of themeforest, I'll check there too.

4:58 AM
I think I found what I need to keep moving, in the form of a corporate identity on thememonster.

@Moshe Actually I'm not. I celebrated Christmas today. (;

In other news, notification work. I think. Erm...
Say something, will ya?

@YiJiang like this?

@Fosco Well, it almost works. The text notification is fine, but the user gravatar isn't showing up, and somehow my own messages also trigger the notifications
Right, now the second problem is solved
Now for the first one
Right...
Perfect. Right. Can someone say something?

5:17 AM
refuses

@TimStone Too late, I got fed up and used Firebug Lite to do the job instead :P

:P

Entirely coincidental that I used your username and gravatar :)

Hah

@TimStone, you said you made a change, but did you forget to push it?

5:26 AM
@RebeccaChernoff I didn't forget, but I wasn't done poking around yet (I had something else I wanted to add and I'm only half-done)

So, I'll make sure to do it soon :)

I may or may not beat you to a commit. (;

The race is on, then! Except probably not really on account of my laziness and need to do laundry and pack and such provided that my flight doesn't get cancelled again on Monday. :p
Also, damn this WwF board. So hard to play anything new!

I found the chat function that converts a display name to the autocomplete version. So I can use that to do the regex match for explicit replies.

5:34 AM
Nifty :)

5:44 AM
@RebeccaChernoff There's also one that will automatically format rep to the 10k format used throughout SO

Hmmm... ToRelativeTimeMini()

There are lots of fun little functions in the code.

Hrm, my eye is all itchy and now red from me rubbing it, uncool.

5:56 AM
Well quit itching it!

I have, now that it seems to have stopped itching!

(;
(inside joke with a friend, she like to say she itches things that itch rather than rubbing them)

Ah, heheh :P
OK, the front panel buttons on the new Xbox are way too sensitive. They aren't actual "buttons", and I just accidentally opened the disk tray with my pants leg while trying to plug something into the back of the TV, heh.

6:11 AM
Firefox's showNotification doesn't accept HTML, so working with it is a little weird
For instance, @TimStone's last long message appeared as a single, 1000px wide line at the bottom of the screen

Nice :P

I've tried \n also, but those just get turned into spaces. What other methods can I try?

I'm glad it felt that everything I said was that important, but I do feel like that's not the ideal behaviour.

Yeah, the Chrome notifications are just plaintext. Guess I haven't noticed what it does with long ones.

@TimStone You're right, maybe I should try limiting the number of characters

6:13 AM
@RebeccaChernoff I think it ellipsifies them

say something longer (;

@RebeccaChernoff This is a longer bit of text that's pretty boring on account of my not having anything of particular interest to say. However, that hasn't stopped me from dragging it out into this relatively lengthy chat message. Is this long enough? Let's hope so. edits

@RebeccaChernoff Also, the notifications cover each other, instead of popping up one on top of another (I think) like Chrome's, so multiple messages arriving at the same time would be a little weird

@YiJiang's wasn't truncated. I missed @Tim's.

@TimStone That one is long enough such that the left side of the message overflows my screen :P

6:15 AM
:D

@RebeccaChernoff But at least it's multiline, right?

It is, yeah.
@YiJiang That is super annoying. Oh Firefox.. sighs

Yeah, it wraps. And that wasn't truncated.

I might be able to see if I can hack into the source for showNotification, but don't get your hopes high.

Oh, I was imagining things then. Wouldn't be the first time. ;)

6:53 AM
12 suckers installed the damn thing
Man, this poor answer bounced from WA -> Wordpress -> SO, and 5 month later still no answer

Q: How can you edit all permalinks in BlogEngine.NET

I just imported my blog from Wordpress to BlogEngine.NET. Pretty much everything came over correctly. The only missing piece now is figuring out how to change the URLS for all the posts. I was able to get the date in the URL like I had in WP but that leaves me with 2 problems. There is still th...

3 hours later…
10:22 AM
@YiJiang Hello world

11:04 AM
Hello Tavern

11:21 AM
@radp Hi!

How's you?

@radp Fine :P The Prism thingadongdong is finally coming together

Prism is dead stuff :|

@radp Doesn't mean it's entirely uninteresting to work with
Although there are times you want to punch the person who left out some of those gapping gaps in the API
Looking at the .cpp source, it seems like showNotification has two hidden arguments that allows it to be made into a button, though how useful that is I'm not sure

1 hour later…
12:42 PM
Oh look, I broke something again. Yup, definitely. What is it this time...?
Ah... right... now this should work

1 hour later…
2:15 PM
we have snow! yey!
a lot of snow, at least for this area
crazyness
breakfast time. catch you guys later!

2:53 PM
I am NOT dead!
Anything good I might have missed in the past four days, besides well wishes?

@drachenstern Wohoo! Come join in the ranks of the undead!

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and warm well-wishes to all (since I missed it on 12/24-12/25)
So here's a fun one, any advice on rebuilding a user-corrupted library of iTunes files, where I have some that are file-corrupted, some that are duplicates (filename.mp3, filename 1.mp3) and some that have bad meta info ... any advice BESIDES doing it all by hand, again?

@drachenstern points to Apple.SE or SuperUser

I was trying to merge two libraries (and I was able to deal with the duplication part) but when I went to delete the "unnecessary" library ... I started deleting the "main" library by accident ... :( ... so I did an NTFS undelete but some of the files seem to be corrupted.
@YiJiang yeah I was hoping to avoid a full-on question, but you're right, may already be answers there ... just figure my situation isn't normal is it?
ok, who has the userscript install location memorized, since @TimStone isn't here right now?

in JavaScript on Stack Overflow Chat, Nov 9 at 22:04, by Yi Jiang
Keyboard shortcuts and IRC-like /commands for chat: Install Link and Github site

3:02 PM
thank you for memorizing it ;)
have like 5 activities going and my brain is still asleep
I presume then, excepting the travels of a little bearded fat man and his wooden Cervidae-powered transport, that nothing of particular interest has occurred here in the past few days?

@drachenstern Going by the starred posts, no indeed

@YiJiang I take it you haven't been here much either then?
I'm trying to decide if a transcript reading is in order ...

@drachenstern On the contrary, I think I've been here for most of the time things were actually happening... and most of the time when they were not

@YiJiang ah, there's that and my thanks then ;)

Anyway, @RebeccaChernoff has got an update to the userscript by adding desktop notifications to the userscript for Chrome

3:12 PM
I noticed something to that effect in the cliffsnotes but didn't grok the meaning

@drachenstern Cliffnotes has... desktop notifications?

> Desktop notifications for Chrome users.
her last commit message

@RebeccaChernoff @TimStone commons.oreilly.com/wiki/index.php/Greasemonkey_Hacks/… Puts us to shame, eh? Fully functional Ubiquity-like command line interface with autocomplete, written without jQuery or any other library against Firefox 2.0's JavaScript interpreter in 2006...
virtual hat tip to this great scripter

3:41 PM
damn you wikipedia, I can't get out of your clasp this morning

4:04 PM
So my big gift this year was itunes.apple.com/be/album/the-beatles-box-set/id402060584 and I likes it :D

4:21 PM
I went to /review, sorted by shortest first, and lo and behold this is the top answer:

A: What's the equivalent of use-commit-times for git?

Me ThinksLinus is such a short sighted dick.

5:00 PM
Hello

Mornin

5:49 PM
So for anyone using the desktop notifications, do you like the room favicon and room name as titles or should it be the user's gravatar and name displayed? Or should I leave it like it is and just have the message be "name - message"

Speaking of which, does that only work on OSX? How does it work? I installed the latest but I'm not sure how it should operate.

@drachenstern It should work on all OS, but only for Chrome
You should be asked for permission to be spammed with notifications by the browser :P

@YiJiang so what do I need to do to make it happen? Minimize the window?
I haven't been asked for perms yet

@drachenstern Ask @RebeccaChernoff, I only saw a simple example and don't really use Chrome, so I'm not entirely clear on how it's implemented

@drachenstern, did you update the script?
Userscripts don't auto-update.

5:54 PM
@RebeccaChernoff installed this morning, there wasn't one on this computer before then

Do you see a button next to send/upload that says "desktop @mentions"?

Click it. (:

perms granted

@drachenstern, \o/
(did that give you a desktop notification?)

5:56 PM
Sweet. can you both hit me so I can see if they stack on 7?

@RebeccaChernoff Clearly you need to make it more obvious to new users. May I suggest text-decoration: blink?

ok, showertime, ciao

Dov
6:42 PM
hey, is it just me, or is SO down?

@Dov SO is down here too! The wheel of blame points to the dev team

Dov
and now I think it's actually back...

7:40 PM
yawns Ugh

@TimStone could be worse

:P

almost time to fill up the flask and play in the snow

I want snow.
Though, you're getting enough to postpone a football game hehehe.

@RebeccaChernoff I'm getting a bit of snow now. It's a day late, but it's still snow.

7:54 PM
and @RebeccaChernoff that makes me sad ... i wanted a football game

8:11 PM
Can't believe they cancelled the game...
Im 2 hours north of the game, hoping we don't get slammed.

they are calling for 20 in right now here
F*(%&*^($^ VOice Req ivrs

where?

Yeah, we've only gotten a little bit so far.

philly @Fosco

That's too much snow >< especially in the city.

8:14 PM
It'll be interesting to see how much Philly gets, had to move my flight to Georgia from today to tomorrow, and they already cancelled some flights tomorrow morning earlier today.

8:31 PM
Hm, my head needs to stop throbbing, argh.
Heh, both Joel and Jeff are mentioned on the Slashdot front page right now.

@TimStone O_O

o_o

8:48 PM
and the blizzard warnings are starting to come in

Q: I'm maintaining a java class that's 40K lines long.. problem?

Billworth VandoryThis may be a subjective question leading to deletion but I would really like some feedback. Recently, I moved to another very large enterprise project where I work as a C++ developer. I was aghast to find most classes in the project are anywhere from 8K to 50K lines long with methods that are ...

I think my longest class is just over 1K lines, and even it is primarily just made up of one/two-line helper methods for spitting out XML, heh.

9:28 PM
I just starred a post of Chacha's. I feel dirty inside.

gives @radp some soap for Christmas

@TimStone \o/

@radp Was it a mistake of some kind? You can unstar them, it's not permanent

@MichaelMrozek That works too.
