Q: About using ASP.Net security and Membership in web applications

mokokamelloI have 3 questions about using ASP.Net security and Membership in web applications 1-do people outside localhost by any means have access to asp.net security control panel 2-what is the best way to edit security, is it by opening the website through VS-2010 and editing security , or there is an...

anyone else feel like tackling that rewrite?
I would but it hurts my brain to rewrite questions that obviously demonstrate a distinct lack of ability to understand the fundamentals of web architecture before working on web applications.
If I were gonna build a house I would start by learning what a hammer and nail were, and why a 2x4 is NOT 16 inches by 31 inches.

@drachenstern I think I'll just fix the formatting and leave it at that

@YiJiang lol, but it's the content that hurts my head :p

5:15 AM
@drachenstern Which is why you need someone who doesn't know ASP.NET to do the editing :P

lol, too true

I have no idea what he means when he says 'edit security'
Surely it's 'edit security options' or something like that

I'm not entirely sure I understand either, but I'm very glad I'm not a gui-designer programmer. All those people who think that the only way to design is with a mouse...

Planaria are non-parasitic flatworms of the biological family Planariidae, belonging to the order Seriata. Planaria are common to many parts of the world, living in both saltwater and freshwater ponds and rivers. Some species are terrestrial and are found under logs, in or on the soil, and on plants in humid areas. These animals move by beating cilia on the ventral dermis, allowing them to glide along on a film of mucus. Some move by undulations of the whole body by the contractions of muscles built into the body membrane. They exhibit an extraordinary ability to regenerate lost body p...

Oh well.
@drachenstern you need 200 rep to be tracked
I guess there are those few new users for the week.

Hmm, everything up to my flight has been cancelled today. Everyone cross their fingers that they cancel mine as well. :P
'Cause I'm really not looking forward to driving to the airport in this insane wind.

Where you headed?

I have to drive to Philly, and my flight's to Atlanta

3:08 PM
@TimStone So... within a hundred kilometer of Philadelphia... (goes off to add more pins to the "Where is Tim" map)

Indeed. :P

I thought he already told us where he lived, or are we being mum on that point? Besides, I remember the information I already learned ... mwahahahah- cough wheeze hack

Nah, I just said that I lived within 50-100 miles of Philly, heh.

Heh, I was wondering why my phone and the site on my computer were saying different information...Oh Delta...

3:12 PM
And I live within erm... -10 kilometers of Singapore

Even though there are actual dates in the drop down (originally it said "Tomorrow", and you'll notice why that's a problem).

So the renewed ETA is? Leaving or not leaving?

Oh, I don't think they've made the decision yet.
They only recently cancelled the 2:00 pm flight, and mine leaves at 3:15.

And it's 10:20 local right? So roughly another two hours before you MUST be out the door then?

Yeah, something like that :P
The extreme winds of death advisory is until 6:00 pm, so we'll see how that plays out.

3:23 PM
@TimStone I'm... kind of sceptical that you can actually be blown off the highway

You'd be surprised how much wind gusts of 50 mph can push your car around.

@YiJiang ... I figured that was the flight but yeah, the wind can be brutal on cars on the highway
My car gets beat up enough in the tailwind baffles of a tractor trailer

Hahah. I like to line all of my gifts up in the window too so everyone can see what I've got.

question, would the following be possible/desirable; hosting the Wikipedia Reference Desk on the SE network/platform? (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Computing )

@user10926 Not really, since the format doesn't appear (at first glance) to be compatible
Also, the site doesn't appear (again, at first glance) to be focused on one topic specifically, which is what SE sites are about

Thirdly, they've spent years building that product, and SOIS has spent years building this product, and there's no justifiable business reason to migrate from one to the other.

Q: Search input element needs transparent background color, and tag anchor misaligned

Yi JiangThe search <input> element appears not have any background-color property set to it. This, at least in Firefox 3.6 on Ubuntu, causes the input element to default to a white background, which is quite ugly: Setting the background color to transparent fixes this. Also, the tag anchor appe...

@YiJiang Hrm, I hadn't noticed that until now. Weird.
They did just change the CSS thingadongdong the other day, but I know I checked the site last night.

@TimStone It's weird that these two bugs escaped testing - the tag misalignment one only appears on Firefox I think but the search on appears on Chrome too and is pretty darn obvious

Also, [webapp-rec] is the second most popular tag?

4:29 PM
@TimStone so good bad or indifferent?

Works for me. The wind really is crazy right now.
Also, time away from desktop = lost productivity, and I only have so much to lose to begin with.

@TimStone bah, you'll just sit here like we do, speaking of which, I really must to my timsheet :(

Hah, naw...I'll get some sort of work in.

Hello
@YiJiang You were off by about an hour..

@TylerChacha Right... well my mind reading skills aren't as developed

Kids these days. Getting up before 9 on Christmas vacation.

4:56 PM
Ok, timesheet fluffed, hopefully sufficiently.

I never get up past 8..

Spoiled rotten. It takes real discipline to make it past 9.
(depending, of course, on the night before)

I really need to redo my blog..

I can't, the sun directly shines into my room and even the curtains doesn't help

I normally get up around 10, 11. Granted, I don't sleep until 4 or 5, but...

4:58 PM
The current theme is alright ... but I think a plain white theme would work better
Anyone have an opinion?

Sadly I have no clue what I did last Monday. Email not exactly spawning any rememberances either ... I should really keep my timesheet a little more frequently than the end of the month D: ... oh, now I remember, I was trying to recover from accidentally erasing all the sprocs which weren't in source control D:

@TylerChacha It's not bad, although it's very plain, and the twitter and rss button stick out like sore thumbs

The buttons, not the widgets?
I was debating removing the buttons

what buttons?
I like the theme asis

5:08 PM
specifically what buttons?

The Twitter/RSS icons

@TylerChacha Because everything else are flat, the two 3D sign like buttons distracting

Try that

I just saw those as images, but I like 'em. Do you want them to be easily accessible over a touch interface? If so, leave 'em large. Else (meaning you probably have your own CSS stylesheet for mobile browsers) pull em down

@drachenstern You found Cadbury mini eggs, apparently. Not sure if you can put that on your timesheet though. :P

5:09 PM
lol, that was at the house ;)
I don't think I can put "chatted in MSO for 5 hours" on my timesheet, plus, I do get things done during most of the day even when I'm in here. Just need to be able to put what I did that day.

@TimStone "11am: Found chocolate eggs; will remain unproductive for the rest of the day"

@YiJiang lol, I should've. Sadly, they're not opened yet.
I should also log all the times my wife calls me:

@YiJiang Hahah ;)

10:33 am, 3 minute conversation with wife. Next productive session begins in +20 minutes
I swear she can cause me to kill a half hour or more making me do stuff, cos she doesn't like dealing with people D:

@drachenstern I do too. I'm not sure how, and from what I say I imagine it seems like I don't, but in reality I do work pretty hard. :P
@drachenstern Me either :D

5:12 PM
Hi

'Ello @Fosco

@TimStone yeah but that's no reason for me to lose 30 minutes ;)

I'll do a bigger revamp on chacha102.com later .. but for right now it is simple, clean, I like it

shrugs

@TimStone I know, right? It's like this is the place I come to let my brain ruminate on what needs to be done. I can leave here and go turn out like 100 lines of [good | useful | correct] code or I can sit not-here and spend the same amount of time on the same amount of code.
@TylerChacha so you just lost the links altogether? I liked 'em, they broke up the page. meh. Not my site. Speaking of, I should really start to think about a personal site ...

5:14 PM
@drachenstern Yeah, I lost the buttons altogether. I'm probably going to add in some other stuff later though

Ok, I have 8+ hours per day, for all work-days-in-month to date, for productive actual work per day. And people wonder why I'm at work for 10 hours a day ;)

The biggest thing is that I have a network of sites, and none of those sites link between each other
Also, if you go to my blog, the only thing you see is the latest blog post and my Twitter updates. You should at least see a list of recent blog posts/shares

what blog engine do you use?

Wordpress
Shares is a secondary post_type
One is the loneliest number number that you'll ever do.

Is it wrong that I have a method in a class that's 3000 lines long that stores a sample XML doc as a string so I can return it without having to hit the filesystem? (the last 3259 lines are sample value return methods)
Quite literally: const string S = @" and then it begins the XML string.

@drachenstern 3000 is the loneliest number, that you'll ever do

It Just Works So Long As You Just Do Things We Allow You To™

that was your question? i could've answered that.
the answer is of course not. you need to have your cell phone create a wireless network, and get on that way.

@Fosco eh, I'm no expert, I just need doublechecking since the owner believes I'm just being lazy in saying "of course not"

@Fosco sadly this is correct.
@radp secondary (tertiary?) confirmation via comment

p.s. Omnia II was a nice phone... but my Fascinate makes it look like a turd.

I'm just puzzled that you get a list of commands with precisely 1 item, "Ignore this device."
@Fosco I didn't say "Omnia II", I said "Omnia" :)

6:30 PM
@radp it just means that there's no devices to connect to in my experience

...and as you might expect from a Samsung mobile with Windows Mobile 6 and TouchWiz it sucks.

ewww, WM6 is teh loze

BlueTooth is very locked down in iOS-land...
if it were a pair of speakers, or a headset, or a keyboard, you'd have more than 1 option.
the same problem exists on a lot of verizon phones (and everyone else im sure) where they wont let you connect certain devices or use features they offer as a pay service
@radp What's lazy about it, though?... using a wifi network app is better in my opinion.

It just irks me because we paid the thing full price.
We owe the mobile networks nothing.

and you still won't... this doesn't have anything to do with them.

6:34 PM
Still that stupid SIM card format means getting an ad-hoc number just for the darn thing.
Otherwise we could've just plugged the sim card with the better plan in.

i haven't seen any devices that support tcp-ip over BT.. not that they don't exist, but it's not something you should expect.

@Fosco They don't need to because they accept any SIM card.
Again, it'd be just simpler to swap SIMs.

@radp I think you're thinking the wrong way round
So just so you're clear @radp ~ The problem is with a decision Apple made, not so much with a decision of your carrier.

@drachenstern Yes, a decision Apple made for both customer lock-in and carrier protection.

@radp but not something that the wireless carrier did to the phone
So saying boohoo my wireless carrier won't let me is wrong

6:37 PM
@drachenstern not directly, no.

saying boohoo Apple devices can't use bluetooth modems is a twofold problem, but is more accurate

@drachenstern I didn't say that.

4 mins ago, by radp
We owe the mobile networks nothing.

I guess carriers still influenced the decision to go with this custom form factor anyway before they'd allow the iP* on their networks.

Then consider me confused.

6:39 PM
...under the US model where phone makers have to beg carriers to get their mobile phones on their networks

@radp again, I'm pretty sure it's a bluetooth concern, not a "they're out to get me" concern.
@radp we hate it too

@drachenstern I'm saying that I wouldn't want to do this in bluetooth in the first place if I could put any SIM in the darn thing

@radp did you get a iPad with an unlocked SIM slot?

but I can't, and I partially blame carriers for that.
@drachenstern yes. An unlocked custom-form-factor-only SIM slot

6:41 PM
Yes, and I've never seen anything else requiring that

It's the new standard. Apple just happens to be on the bleeding edge

@drachenstern Hahah, brilliant.

@drachenstern Starred for irony :P

@radp > The micro-SIM was developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute along with ...
> The form factor was mentioned in the Dec 1998 3GPP SMG9 UMTS Working Party ...

I really don't know why they needed the new form factor

6:43 PM
So while yes it does suck that you can't really find too many micro-sims, the fact that they are using the 12 year old form factor really can't be blamed too much on Apple. I mean, yeah they made a design decision, but otherwise ... it was not like they commissioned it

Okay, so it's not a new standard either -- it's a forgotten standard nobody used they decided to revive for reasons numbered above :P

perhaps. I can't comment on that one.

Nor can I, obviously.

Apple wanted to go green by saving that precious plastic. :P

But so the point being, the damned micro-sim, for all it's uselessness to us, is still a valid decision by Apple. They probably needed to find as small of one as they could use so as to keep as much room internally as possible.
It would make sense if they were trying to contain it under the bezel as much as possible, and that that might be part of the reason for the bezel width
could have to do with room for batteries
I have no idea, I've never seen inside an iPad

6:48 PM
i heard you can cut a sim to micro-sim size and it works.

@Fosco Yeah, @drachenstern linked to a blog post up there about doing just that.

I posted that link already :p

oh ok sorry, just got back from a smoke break :)

Which begs the question why we're using those big SIM cards anyway, since they're clearly wasting space. ;)

since there is a custom backpanel for the 3G models, I'm going on the SIM size is important
@Fosco no concern ;)
@TimStone obviously there is a backstock in plastic that must be obviated, and we can't recycle it!!!

6:50 PM
Oh, of course!

PS: that $.50 word won't cost you a penny today, limited time offer and all that jazz ;)
apparently it will cost me a word tho ;) (check the revision history of :416069)

ordered. must remember to cancel linode, godaddy, and webhost4life hosting accounts.

Who do you use as a registrar? I have some domains on a shared host, and I'm going to eventually move my sites over to my Rackspace Cloud server (so it's doing more than sitting idle)...GoDaddy's whole ...approach to business annoys me, but it seems to be what most people use. :P

i do buy domains from godaddy, just without all the extra crap they try to up-sell
the most recent name I picked, I opted to take their bundle of 5 extensions
.com was like $15.. but .com, .net, .info, .biz, and .mobi was only $40
usually I don't do that, but this one might make me famous some day and I can't have any imitators.

@Fosco, how hard is it to buy foreign domains?
Since you have a .co

there are lots of countries in that list

Oh. I hate godaddy.

You probably hate your cable and phone companies too, but you still buy from them

I think I'm the only person in the world godaddy hasn't screwed over; I've never had any problems with them

There's nothing to hate about GoDaddy. No more horror stories than even smaller registrars, and good customer support.

@DanGrossman You'd be surprised.

7:53 PM
There's no such thing as a safe alternative

I mostly hate their ads, actually.

@MichaelMyers If you're not using the same registrar that Danica Patrick uses, you're doing something wrong

I'm doing something wrong.
I reason that a) I don't like the ads, and b) if they have to appeal to the lowest common denominator (thinking pre-Danica Patrick here) then maybe they aren't so great.

@Moshe @YiJiang Yes, Grossman is a common Jewish name.
@MichaelMyers They're the biggest in the world. They are appealing to the masses instead of the geeks.
Go Daddy is an Internet domain registrar and Web hosting company that also sells e-business related software and services. In 2010, it reached more than 40 million domain names under management. Go Daddy is currently the largest ICANN-accredited registrar in the world, and is four times the size of its closest competitor. Known for its racy marketing, Go Daddy started advertising in the Super Bowl in 2005. Since then, the company expanded its marketing to include sports sponsorships. Go Daddy filed for an IPO in 2006, but later cancelled it, due to "market uncertainties." History Go ...
> four times the size of its closest competitor

I've had no problems with go-daddy...
in fact their service is TOO good... how many times has a company just randomly called you asking how everything's going with your site and if there's anything they can do to help?
I'm annoyed by these calls sometimes, depending on where I am, but I can't complain..

8:05 PM
I added their number as a contact on my phone so I know it's them calling :p

@Fosco I could complain. And probably would.

@MichaelMyers Of course you could. I bet if I gave you free money you'd find a reason to complain.

@YiJiang um, nor do I. Fair enough.
@Fosco points at the 10*3 bit.

I got Jeff :)

who has a lot of experience breaking up with women?.. i have a question regarding how much information about 'why' you should provide.

I just lock the door, change my phone number, change my IM screen names and start bouncing my emails.

@DanGrossman well changing the locks and possibly my phone number are part of the plan for -after- she moves out for good (cmon feb 1st!)
but she won't stop asking for more info on why im breaking up with her.

Relationships

Proposed Q&A site for people seeking answers to questions about dating, long term relationships, love, marriage or other commitments, and everything else typically considered a "relationship". (Intended to encompass the Love and Dating sites and extend them.)

Currently in defintion.

hehe.. maybe next time around that site will be helpful.

@Fosco to the other person or to the general public?

8:45 PM
@drachenstern to the other person..

I don't see the harm in telling her exactly why, unless you think she'll react so poorly as to do something stupid.

basically I said we don't have a future together, our formula doesn't work long-term, it's not all you, blah blah

Also, if you can figure out how to get them to open up in return, that would be great. We're in the process of moving, and I need someone to be at the old house about an hour's drive from here, and my wife refuses, and says "I won't go, that's all you need to know" and is being very tight lipped about what's in her head. I wish she would just say "I'm scared of ___________". It's causing _me grief to have an even more flummoxed work schedule just because she "won't"
@DanGrossman that's my thought process too

@DanGrossman it's not my style.. actually it might be better to say im incapable of doing so.

@Fosco then you're going to have to learn how to
@Fosco well I have, and broke things off to boot at the same time. You just say "you're acting like a fucking child, I can't deal with it, get lost" ... well, that worked in my situation, for what it was worth at the time.

Now, some people have a smaller amount of grey matter in the right anterior prefrontal cortex, and are physiologically incapable of the same level of deep introspection as you. But with enough time, you should be able to at least write a letter that lays it out without being overly cruel.

@DanGrossman she wants me to reply to a letter she sent me on facebook..
@drachenstern wow.

@Fosco What's wrong with that?

@Fosco that's actually not a bad idea

I'm too nice to everyone, that's the issue.. that's how it lasted this long.
If I don't have anything nice to say, I'd rather just go my own way.
thanks for the advice, though... I may reply to her tonight. I wish she could've found a place for January 1st.

vacation time!!!

if my job would sit around waiting for me, i would go somewhere )

remote worker :D
tell 'em you're working from home for a while

@Fosco I don't know you at all, but when people say that the problem is that they're too nice... right in the middle of asking for advice about breaking up... well...

:was thinking similarly: :x

@MichaelMyers Your comment implies that there is an obvious point you're making... however, I do not see it.

Everyone thinks they're nice, because they don't realize when they're not. Right anterior prefrontal cortex again, I suppose.

8:57 PM
I realize when I'm not, that's why I avoid doing it...

Exactly. I'm above average, too, you know.

aren't like 50% of the people above average? ;)
well, on average ;)

:416188 What the hell did I just walk into

LOL
@JesseHartwick awesome times at the tavern, that's what.

8:59 PM
It sounds like a shallow relationship, otherwise she wouldn't have to ask you tell her why.
