@ShadowWizard lets just say that I've found wisdom in weird places, too
user259867
*let's
@Yes huh, "let is"?
user259867
No, it's a contraction of "let us"
meh, english is weird...
yes
22:03
Yes
user259867
True. Is this the only contraction with a pronoun instead of an auxiliary verb?
"s" can mean "has" or "is" and now "lets us"
Beware, Jeff is awaiting with his giant S just beyond the corner
I officially declare nicaelBot dead because of browser incompatibility.
user259867
22:07
> I believe that let + us is the only instance where this type of contraction occurs. Is there an explanation as to why verbs such as (i) give + us, (ii) get + us or (iii) take + us were not similarly contracted? -- Etymology of “let us” and “let's”
user259867
Let's get's some beer's
What's the problem, @AstroCB?
@hichris123 It will only work with Safari, and Safari is my main browser, so I am logged in, which means that I have to run it in a private window to be able to log in as xkcdBot, and you can't write to localStorage from a Safari private window.
I suppose I could run it on my main account like I did before.
@Yes Wouldn't that be "get ourselves"?
@AstroCB Yeah, but what's the issue with Chrome?
@Yes Ye's
22:08
Trying to see if it's a reported bug or not.
user259867
@hichris123 I imagined a contraction of "get us". Not a real thing.
Right, but in that context it wouldn't be get us. It would be get ourselves.

Q: getelemenById('...').click doesn't work in Chrome

Marcell Jarvas Possible Duplicate: innerDocument.getElementById(<elment ID>).click(); doesn't work in Firefox/chrome, in IE it works I have a tabbed html page. <ul class="tabs"> <li><a href="#tab1" id='accomodation'>Accomodation</a></li> <li><a...

.click() works properly in FF, but if I moved it there, I'd have to rewrite xkcdBot's core engine, which is what allows access to the revision history.
What are you trying to .click()? The send button?
user259867
Right.... By the way, it's surprising that the ELU question on let's was asked just last month. I thought they'd be done with common constructions like that by now.
22:11
@Doorknob No; the gravatar wall.
I guess I could do a request to nicael's chat profile page and pull the about me from there, but that seems unnecessary.
@AstroCB MDN claims otherwise. developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/HTMLElement/click. Also, there is jQuery on this page...
@hichris123 jQuery isn't working either, for reasons I don't understand.
user259867
http://stackoverflow.com/search?q=jQuery+isn%27t+working is a pretty popular thing on SO. stackoverflow.com/search?q=jQuery+isn%27t+working
Oh, you're trying to let nicael chat via editing his about me?
@AstroCB "Seems unnecessary" is a good motto for the whole project, really.
22:13
@Yes Only 5787 results? I expected more.

@nicael you mean trying to edit your profile while suspended results in a 404 error page?

@ShadowWizard yes

@Braiam Yes, using the /users method, sorting by name and specifying min and max. Example
And/or a kick of Astro. Either would work fine at this point.

Nice.

@hichris123 There's "hide posts"...
22:39
Yeah, I think I might have to.
I'd like to have intelligent conversation with someone, rather than listening to the cries from a description box.
@ShadowWizard Did those revision notes ping you?
user259867
I do it quite often, usually on temporary basis. No hard feelings.
Much cleaner.
@AstroCB nope, how can they ping me?
Saw it, will report tomorrow-ish
@ShadowWizard Just wondering if I should strip the symbols out of the rev history as well.
22:41
I'm off, @AstroCB you can put the bot in my Den to avoid annoying people here, if you like :)
@ShadowWizard Is @nicael in there?
@AstroCB yup
@ShadowWizard It's there.
@AstroCB well, it's formatted as code, so nothing is being parsed
@AstroCB thanks, will take a look after a good night sleep :)
@hichris123 nicaelBot removed from Tavern.

@AstroCB "Seems unnecessary" is a good motto for the whole project, really.
@hichris123 Everything is unnecessary.
But if we followed that, then nothing would ever go anywhere.
Yeah, why don't we just allow all suspended users to chat. That'll fix everything.
This is, quite honestly, defeating the purpose of suspensions.
And ignoring what SEI wants.
S/he took an exploit too far; I don't agree with anything nicael did prior to suspension, and I think the suspension was deserved. If bugs are going to come up, however, it doesn't hurt to report them as they show up rather than shove them all down Meta's throat at once (not that it really matters).
@AstroCB Your first sentence is quite incompatible & disagrees with your current actions. If you believe that the suspension is deserved... then why are you allowing the suspension to be evaded and ignored?
22:53
@AstroCB But, of course, that statement is a fairly irrelevant weaselly blanket claim.

@Yes Post ignored; alerts about it will no longer be posted.
¯_(ツ)_/¯
22:55
@AstroCB Doesn't hurt to report bugs, true. Unfortunately, "report bugs" is an incomplete summary of the situation. Teaching users that their suspensions are a joke and helping them to work around it is not necessary and not justified by said bug reports. There is no compelling reason to justify what you are doing in order to have things like "the comment message for suspended users is inaccurate" reported now as opposed to 30 days from now.
@Shadow acting as a suspended-user-to-meta relay server is just as bad.
As for "shoving them all down meta's throat at once", whether nicael chooses to do that vs spacing them out upon return is not our problem. We have never been concerned about the rate that bugs were posted to meta in the past, it didn't just suddenly become a relevant issue worth considering now.
That is so awesome.
Is there an emoticon for "laughing while saying this"? Like that combination speech + guffaw thing that people do.
@Yes heh
@JasonC @hichris123 This criticism would have helped before I wrote the bot...
I don't think that doing this in any way invalidates the suspension. nicael's suspended and can't do anything on any of the sites; if that time is used for finding bugs, then so be it.
Reporting them earlier just means that they'll be fixed faster.
seriously considering paying $10k for what I think is a pretty killer domain name. Is this a bad idea? Am I crazy? somebody hold me!
23:13
@AstroCB It still helps now, just kill it. We know you can write it. Yay. And to be honest when you said you were going to write that bot I genuinely thought you were joking.

23:16
@AstroCB And as for the bugs, it's not like bugs have ever been fixed quickly. More fundamentally, none of these are bugs that can't wait 30 days. You're literally helping a suspended user work around their suspension. There is no way you can put up a solid argument that what you're doing is in line with the intent. Moving it to the Den changes nothing, you and @Shadow are the primary users helping nicael work around it, I don't see how moving it to a separate room changes anything.
@JasonC I need that gif of Michael Jackson eating popcorn for this conversation.
in Shadow's Den, 1 hour ago, by Shadow Wizard
@nicael I'll report only bugs related to user suspension, or major bugs. Otherwise please keep a list and submit those bugs when you're back from suspension.
in Shadow's Den, 1 hour ago, by Shadow Wizard
(of course someone else might use it and report, I'm not the only person in those chat rooms, but you also appear to draw some negative attention from other users)
@JasonC thx bae
23:18
@AstroCB Oh yeah that's totally way better, I'm sure there will definitely be critical bugs that couldn't wait 30 days for nicael to report. Very good point.
@AstroCB More like they'll be ignored faster, but...
If you all really think that it is actively harmful, I will disable it.
@JasonC What. If. nicael can get some of the Tavern popcorn?!?!
I get what you're saying about evading suspension, but I don't really think that it's a huge problem.
@hichris123 No, he doesn't get popcorn for 30 days.
@Shog9 ^ Can you please either make this crap stop, or tell me I'm in the wrong so I can stop fighting for it, or both? I'm sick of talking about it.
23:21
We all know that nicael will find some exploit that will break the suspension; thirty days is long enough for that.
Arguments against are so overwhelmingly weak I can't imagine why you'd even bother stating them.
@AstroCB We don't all know that. And if he does, then perhaps an IP ban is in order. Not. Our. Problem.
@JasonC I do wonder what he will say, given that he's the one who banned him...
You're quite the weasel today, btw. :P
@JasonC But what if he could?? He could steal all of our popcorn! THAT'S A PROBLEM!
Noun: sarcasm (countable and uncountable, plural sarcasms)
  1. (uncountable) A sharp form of humor, intended to hurt, that is marked by mocking with irony, sometimes conveyed in speech with vocal over-emphasis. Insincerely saying something which is the opposite of one's intended meaning, often to emphasize how unbelievable or unlikely it sounds if taken literally, thereby illustrating the obvious nature of one's intended meaning.
  2. (countable) An act of sarcasm.

Or satiric?
Yeah he can't have our popcorn. We'd have to call in agent Smith. What good is popcorn if you have no mouth?
D. All of the above
@AstroCB That's like meta-weasel. You know damn well that sarcasm doesn't come across in text. Don't pretend sarcasm is obvious.
@JasonC True.
We need a physical Tavern on the Meta.
Yeah we do.

SE should build us a room at HQ.
We'd still need at least one iPad or something for cat gifs.

Actually where are they
Oh they're down town kind of in the middle. Tavern on the 2 train.

Q: How did this question (on meta) get answered months before it was asked?

DavidGThis question on meta was asked 2 days ago on 2015-05-15 08:24:08Z and it now has a single answer from an anonymous user, apparently dated from Christmas Eve last year. Has a mod been playing around on meta perhaps?
