@yellowantphil Recursive dependencies. I need almost nothing. It takes about 5 minutes on a nekkid Linux or Mac if you never installed anything. Maybe. I dunno. What is it saying?
ok finally... I see a lot of stuff in /usr/bin/site_perl
Yeah, you'll have to find which bin or scripts dir it put them in.

Sounds right.
Put that bin or scripts dir in your path.
The best program of the bunch is probably unichars.

They are not counting code points, let alone graphemes. They are merely counting code units in their little UTF-16, which generates illegal character sequences.
Because nobody told them that in the current millennium, we use UTF-16 not UCS-2.
So how do we fix this such that all of your cat faces turn into question marks?

Also, UTF-8 is best.
tell your devs that
maybe they’ll fix it
🐱⃠🐱⃠🐱⃠
03:23
don’t ban the cats 😲
@Shog9 You know that. I know that. But somebody on your side of the vault doors does not know that.
that COMBINING ENCLOSING CIRCLE BACKSLASH is not centered on my 🐱... hmm
Perhaps balpha did this intentionally, to punish those who star unicode
I didn’t star it. not my fault
so, it's balpha fault
03:25
People don’t often generate illegal UTF-8 sequences but it does happen when people confuse bytes with code points. But it happens all the time with UTF-16.
Now you know how to make a NO SAD PANDA emoticon.
@Shog9 Everything anybody ever stars is Unicode.
yeah, I did a bunch of internationalization work years ago, with UTF-16 as the chosen format. Nothing but pain.
And really, really over-sized XML files.
@Shog9 is that why you hate unicode now?
Oh god, you did XML in UTF-16 not UTF-8!?!!?
Ick.
yeah.
NULs everywhere
03:28
That's super stupid.
No, the problem is the tags.
They are in ASCII.
The meta data explodes.
But you knew that.
wait, so it leaves the tags in ASCII, so you mix ASCII and UTF-16 in one file?
No, it explodes them to two bytes each.
so NULs everywhere, like I said?
It just wastes a shitload of space
Yes.
03:29
@Shog9 Thanks for the technical answer, Shog.
Ended up improving the performance of the app immensely by just zipping the files and using a streaming parser to read them.
I did a study and even Chinese and Japanese web page splode in UTF-16 due to tags.
And spaces.
And yes, it had to be UTF-16, because someone had written other libraries that depended on that encoding.
When we post the bug about the kitties, we should probably also tell them about truncating combining characters.
Basically, you have to count grapheme clusters, not just code points let alone code units.
Change kitties to bananas & you'll get The Lounge on your side.
03:31
Shog will just ban anybody who posts about Unicode on meta
Hm, I thought I did that already.
@Shog9 We don't speak of those scum here.
@tchrist seems like you’d want to truncate after a few combining characters, to stop intentional madness

@yellowantphil No, just grab the first 147 graphemes.
@tchrist can’t a grapheme be a million codepoints long?
@tchrist Chromium picks a strange font for the tab when it has a banana in the title
03:34
@yellowantphil Well, yes. Perhaps truncate after the first 32 combining characters like the security UTS mentions sometimes being reasonable.
