@rene Yay for the 2015 Stack Overflow Moderator Election! Election voting ends in 0 days, 0 hours, 59 minutes and 57 seconds.
You missed the hour mark :P
I blame caching
@rene I just resynced the time on the server, it was only off by -0.005967 seconds :P
It wasn't caching :P
19:02
@Undo But. But. It's always caching.
:D I blame time.microsoft.com
@rene ... I used time.apple.com, but meh
Oh wait, I'm using the NTP servers from xs4all
I assume they don't round-robin to time.microsoft.com
Nobody uses nist?
21 Apr 19:06:52 ntpdate[1493]: adjust time server 128.138.141.172 offset -0.001775 sec
I'd say it's close enough
19:07
Not me, I use these mentioned here
okay, OpenSTV running. Check.
Why does this have such low views?

Q: Markdown to HTML, yet again

bjb568String.prototype.replaceAll = function(find, replace) { if (typeof find == 'string') return this.split(find).join(replace); var t = this, i, j; while (typeof(i = find.shift()) == 'string' && typeof(j = replace.shift()) == 'string') t = t.replaceAll(i || '', j || ''); return t; }; ...

@Mooseman As in literally, it continually screams "AWESOME" if you touch the wrong part of the screen, and you have to triple-tap the ubuntu logo to make it stop. This is, obviously, a feature.
^ my view of Windows 8 atm, after being forced to work with it.
@bjb568 Non-descriptive title?
It makes markdown HTML.
What else is there to say?
19:17
Try: "URGNT markdown HTML convert.PLEEEZ HALP my code might bE bAD."
That'll get you some views.
@bjb568 Start with a small intro text instead of a blob of code and as title How can I optimize the parsing of Markdown to Html
@Undo *plz
Oh, forgive my grammar. I am not yet a fluent speaker of bjbish.
There, how about that? I think it's the more formal version of the word.
@rene This isn't specific to optimization.
Question titles don't ask questions anyway, because it's not a title of a question.
CR has that nice special text
OK, then don't change anything, you'll be fine
19:20
Ok.
lol, can't spell then
But people still use the title and the extract to decide whether they care to view a question. If you want views, give people a reason to click over.

Q: Markdown to HTML, yet again (a character-by-character inline markdown parser and accompanying markdown validator function)

bjb568String.prototype.replaceAll = function(find, replace) { if (typeof find == 'string') return this.split(find).join(replace); var t = this, i, j; while (typeof(i = find.shift()) == 'string' && typeof(j = replace.shift()) == 'string') t = t.replaceAll(i || '', j || ''); return t; }; ...

Now my title's specific!

Q: A character-by-character inline markdown parser

bjb568String.prototype.replaceAll = function(find, replace) { if (typeof find == 'string') return this.split(find).join(replace); var t = this, i, j; while (typeof(i = find.shift()) == 'string' && typeof(j = replace.shift()) == 'string') t = t.replaceAll(i || '', j || ''); return t; }; ...

Now my title's… wait
Must be a caching problem.
… reasonable, I was going to say
At least it changed
The novelty effect, in the context of human performance, is the tendency for performance to initially improve when new technology is instituted, not because of any actual improvement in learning or achievement, but in response to increased interest in the new technology. The Metropolitan Education and Research Consortium of the Virginia Commonwealth University states, "While it is possible that higher attention spans can be attributed to novelty effect, even after the initial novelty wears off, the level of interest in the automated workbook is still greater than that in the regular workbook. @InfiniteRecursion Yay for the 2015 Stack Overflow Moderator Election! Election voting ends in 0 days, 0 hours, 34 minutes and 2 seconds.
Oh yeah, that.
!!/so2014
I am excited to see the results.
Martijn, Jeremy, Matt, and meager seem most likely.
19:27
My first vote was for deceze. I hope he wins.
My votes ^
The newly elected mods get a free ticket for the SO Close vote reviewers event and the event ends when the queue is empty.
@InfiniteRecursion U WOT?!?! HE ONLY HAS 243 REVIEWS!
Why did he even run?
@bjb568 HE HAZ PATIENCE ON META. I DIDN'T VOTE ON REVIEW STATS. I VOTED ON THEIR BEHAVIOUR ON MSO.
Same for Martijn, I voted for him because of his exemplary behaviour on Meta, I have not seen his review stats.
Are there stats for the total number of active users who meet the minimum requirements to self nominate for moderator elections?

19:36
@bjb568 Your faith shall be rewarded.
@InfiniteRecursion Moderators aren't just figureheads for meta.

Oh my, a cat with an appetite
@bjb568 Numbers can be gamed, behaviour can't.
So?
That doesn't make it less important.
Er okay.
@bjb568 So I vote on behaviour.
@bjb568 It does. I voted for a mod to handle exceptions, not to do reviews.
@hichris123 two free points because moderator election ends
19:45
@rene Apparently. Oh, I know what it was! Must have downvoted two posts that were deleted?
yep.
WAT! You downvote posts!
@rene I'm not sure, lemme go check. :P
@InfiniteRecursion Moderation is just another step up from the privileges that already exist. Experience using those – flagging, voting, closing, deleting, reviewing – is important in a moderator's ability to do their job.
Well, @hichris123 whatever you do or did, don't downvote. People are complaining on meta, you know...
19:48
>:(
They have that "experience". I didn't vote for folks who never reviewed. But I don't vote based on the highest number of any kind: rep, reviews, or flag counts. Those can be gamed.
Well, I certainly hope they don't get downvoted for complaining. That would totally justify their indignance.
Anonymous
I voted by Reddit karma score.
No, complaints go directly into the mod queue
Finally, we know that @Downvoter refers to hichris123.

@InfiniteRecursion ... you sure it's not @pizza?

@hichris123 Yes. It's YOU!
@hichris123 well, technically it should have been example.com, right?
@mmyers Welllllll... yeah... but it's pt.SO. I leave foreign language sites alone. :P
@InfiniteRecursion Yay? ;)
I made a suggested edit on a foreign language site once!
IIRC it even got approved.
19:54
@Undo I did and succeeded: pt.stackoverflow.com/users/20178/…
I bow before your superior 107 rep number.
I might try to get 3K there and then close vote all questions as unclear

if you can figure out which reason is unclear.

Post an unclear question on their site. When they close it as unclear, you will know which reason is unclear.

I like your practical approach to problems...
I like you approach to close stuff.

@InfiniteRecursion 243 is absurdly low. Especially when coupled with hundreds of thousands of rep.

Q: Can gamification be used for posting in a way that doesn't cause negative behavior?

bjb568Rewarding a user for making a post can cause more low-quality posts to be posted. Rewarding only posts which meet some automated quality standard will make people want to exploit it and create noise while they do that. With a voting system, people are commonly averse to downvotes, even if they ca...

Siiigh, may as well post something.
@ASCIIThenANSI doesn't it do that if a user with edit privileges edits the post from the queue.

No Stack Overflow diamond power in here, right?
@JeremyBanks Nobody gets to be blue in here except for employees.

So much info to ingest right now.

What's the direction of that room where close voters hang out again?
@MartijnPieters I still have a pending flag from April 1st, so get on that. >:D
@MartijnPieters just close all the things, suspend all the accounts, and then figure out what few things you'll have to reinstate.
@rene thanks
@Bart check!
21:08
@Bart You... What have you done?
@MartijnPieters You probably hear it all the time, but thanks for being awesome
@ASCIIThenANSI provided you with a whole lot of free time. Cause there is no chance you're coming back from that.
@Bart You're right!
I hope suddenly I don't leave mid-post!
Well, I guess it's all O
I, for one, am glad @JeremyBanks won. He seems to hang out in the Tavern a lot, so he might be easier to manipulate.
(sshhh, nobody tell the other mods I said that)
Hey, in chat, my reputation says 636. My parent user is Code Golf, but I only have 416 reputation there. What happened?
21:13
inb4 caching
such loop
@ASCIIThenANSI SE chat uses network reputation, or some semblance of it
@mmyers So it adds up total reputation across all sites?
@bjb568 many gif
wow
@ASCIIThenANSI I think that should be many.
@ASCIIThenANSI Yes, although I don't know offhand whether it includes 101-rep accounts
21:18
@mmyers OK, I just did the numbers and it only counts sites with 200+ rep (like a lot of things do). The ~200 increase was because I got to over 200 rep on SO.
Makes sense
@mmyers It's probably because my chat account is on SE itself, and SE doesn't track your accounts under 200 rep for most things
@jurgemaister Thanks, that's much appreciated! I don't hear that often at all, and by all accounts with a blue diamond you have a target on your back so won't be that common.
21:39
is my rep in chat not supposed to be 101? I have more than 101 rep elsewhere
and does rep make any difference in chat, other than displaying under your name?
Meta SE chat shows only Meta SE rep
I thought you said something else earlier, but I guess not
There are three chat sites: SE, SO, and Meta SE
so many chat sites
SO and MSE use only rep and moderators from their associated sites. SE chat combines every site (including SO and MSE)
@pizza Martijn closed and reopened it himself? drunk on power already!
@pizza "Unclear what you're asking"? TWICE?!

Q: Bounty autoawarded to answer I downvoted

bjb568Here, I started a bounty to try to get the bug fixed. Answers were added, and one that I disagreed with and downvoted got the bounty. This is wrong. Don't assign bounties to answers I've downvoted.

WTH, why is it by design?
250 rep just randomly awarded like that to the wrong person?
It isn't random. You know the rules.
@mmyers Then why do the rules state 'if I downvote an answer, a sign that the answer is usually bad, it gets whatever bounty is on it'?
21:54
@ASCIIThenANSI The rule is that the highest-voted answer that was posted after the bounty started wins. No more, no less
@mmyers Highest voted. Downvotes would cause the votes to go down, which makes no sense.
@mmyers Unless it was the only answer.
2
A: Do not implicitly award bounty to an answer that has been downvoted by the investor

Shog9The rules for auto-awarding bounties are well-documented. If you want more control over the process, then award the bounty yourself. If you give up responsibility for your bounty and let a machine make decisions for you, then you've no one but yourself to blame for the results...

@ASCIIThenANSI bjb downvoted it but five other people upvoted
My bounty.
Trivia: it used to be possible to "spoil" bounties, to ensure by various means that they weren't awarded to anyone. Folks abused this. So it is no longer possible without overtly fraudulent behavior.
(behavior that will likely not only lose the reputation but also get you suspended)
21:57
OK. Let's say I want to become a moderator on any SE site. I have all the requirements. What's going to be expected of me if I do become one, and what makes being a mod any different than just being a person with high reputation?

@ASCIIThenANSI ULTIMATE POWER. Mwahahahaha
@ASCIIThenANSI You'll be expected to spend an hour a day doing mod things.
@ASCIIThenANSI You get to be called a Nazi more often. :P
Mods have unilateral votes and an official-looking voice.
They also get more access to private data and can process individual flags.
21:59
@bjb568 Most sites don't have an hour's worth of mod things in a week
For SO, anyway.
They also get an official-sounding face
ur mom's face is official-sounding
Wait, when was that issued? I missed it
@mmyers yeah, that was a late addition, I think. You just got the official-sounding voice and official-looking carrot.
22:01
The tomatocarrot is only for unofficial use
Rumor has it that Jeff heard you singing The Major-General Song after the election and said, "That's it - no more official-sounding voices"
OK. So how do I view when my site's next election is?
you'll find out when it happens
@ASCIIThenANSI There's not a schedule.
@Doorknob So it just happens each year, and I just nominate myself then?
22:03
@ASCIIThenANSI We schedule them when a site needs one. Beta sites have moderators appointed early on and as people step down.
@ASCIIThenANSI They're not yearly. Again, there is no schedule.
@Doorknob So the next election is, in the scheduler's words, "WHENEVER I SAY IT IS!"
@ASCIIThenANSI It's whenever the team decides more moderators are needed.
@Doorknob So it's less of the scheduler shouting at me and more of the team shouting at me.
I like it.
Shouting at everyone, yes. :)
22:06
@Doorknob Absolutely beautiful.
@bjb568 how can I tell from your name whether bjb is lowercase now?
