[ SmokeDetector ] All-caps title: NO WIRED INTERNET UBUNTU 12.04 by GEORGE on askubuntu.com
What happens if you tell SmokeDetector 'true' for an all-caps title?
@JasonC Probably not much.
If you tell it 'false', will it have some sort of psychological breakdown and question its grasp of character encodings?
user259867
Or it will think it's SQL, and such titles should not be posted?
user259867
I don't think the detector actually cares about SQL, though.
user259867

So, SE is looking for Data Science Engineer: https://careers.stackoverflow.com/jobs/62161/data-science-engineer-stack-exchange:

Lol
Hey @SmokeDetector, looking for a job?
user259867
BTW I cooked up yet another bookmarklet, this one for sound notification of new questions posted on a site. Right now I have Drupal /newest opened in a tab, and bookmarklet runs on it. Science? Not really, just experience.
Every time somebody says "bookmarklet" or "user script" I have no idea what they're talking about.
It kind of bugs me that I develop software for a living but am mysteriously completely disconnected from that area of development.
On the other hand, it kind of doesn't really bug me at all.
God damn web monkeys.
Sorry I meant, hey cool bookmarklet.
2
@Braiam That's awesome.
@Rafflesiaarnoldii It says "SO excepted" in your note; does that mean it doesn't work on SO?
user259867
01:19
It does not... Would be pointless anyway, since new questions drop by all the time there. It's for things like Drupal and Meta, slow-moving sites.
01:32
@Rafflesiaarnoldii Does it work on the tags page?
Noooo! There's a bug on my code!
user259867
@JasonC It simply looks for "N questions with new activity". if the page shows this, it works. Otherwise...
@Frank solution: don't use printed code
@JanDvorak Ohai, evil owl!

A: Left/right/center divs in footer with center in middle of *body*

jme11I'm not 100% sure what you're after. Here's what I did get: You want the left div on the left You want the right div on the right You want don't want to limit the width of those to 33%; You want the center to always be dead center. You don't care about overlapping content If I got that right...

^ Why does that work?
What is the magic that happens when top/left/width/height are all set to 0 in CSS? As soon as I set them to anything non-zero (from that answer) the whole thing breaks.
Hey look my fiddle has sex in it
@JasonC Expands to size of container
@bjb568 I believe you; but is there a reference for that somewhere? For example, w3.org/TR/CSS21/visudet.html#propdef-width does not mention anything about 0 being significant.
@JasonC It isn't. It's sides are just 0 away from the container's sides.
@bjb568 Hm; but width:1 sets the width to 1, it doesn't move the side 1 away from the container's side. Wouldn't width:0 set the width to 0?
01:53
@JasonC Null; units!, no (width is width, left is distance from left of container). Yes.
@bjb568 I don't think I'll ever understand CSS.
CSS is like a cat, you see: you pull on its tail, and it scratches your eyes out
6
@Shog9 as long as it wont gouge them out, is fine
@Shog9 At least with a cat, I can guess what's going to happen when I pull on its tail.
02:04
@Braiam that would be quickly over. That doesn't sound like CSS at all.
don't pull my tail, or else
pulls bjb's tail
else
AAaAAAAHHHHH! Not ELSE!
4
@bjb568 Hey thanks. Ok, so, when I add width:0, height:0 to inner in your snippet (and remove right/bottom), it shrinks the inner box to 0x0 (plus padding). That makes sense to me. But in my sex fiddle, 0x0 makes it fill the whole parent container. I can't make this be consistent in my mind.
Oh
Oh I'm a total dumbass.
Obviously I'm confused about why changing width/height breaks it, given that my fiddle doesn't actually specify width or height. What the hell have I even been talking about...
@bjb568 Thanks. Turns out I was just smoking crack this whole time.
"Looking me am a civilized person"
Yeah am.
I don't remember where that came from. I think somebody said it in a comment argument.
user259867
Maybe Jin could use bjb's help too; it's been a while since anything major got done in SE site design...

Considering the nature of your request, and knowing what Jin is up to these days (a super-gigantic overhaul of all the CSS in the network) I'm going to do nothing for a little while.
maaybe. not sure. It miight be useful (but still probably unfindable)
user259867
@hichris123 Yeah, the endLESS refactoring... I meant there were no sites graduating recently. I'm mostly waiting for CS to graduate, hoping for migration path there.
user259867
02:59
Gah, I again began reviewing LQ posts before spending all delete votes for the day. Hate wasting them in the queue.
user259867
9
A: Why I'm casting delete votes in the Low Quality review queue?

Shog9Don't really see the problem here. You get X number of delete votes per day (between 5 and 30, depending on reputation - so by the time you can vote to delete answers, you'll have at least 15). You can use them on whatever you want: questions or answers. Review gives you a bit of a boost by all...

user259867
^^ Well, I do see a problem: if I spend the previous delete votes on obvious VLQ/NAA that everyone in the queue can handle, there isn't much left for the stuff that actually requires them.
I went on css-tricks and see an ad for a code editor called brackets (well, an extension for it, but that's unimportant). I go to its URL without going thru the ad site so it won't generate revenue. I download. It's confusing and I don't really get what it does. My computer is 160˚… what is happened? Its jQueryful wabsite uses up 100% CPU. Deletes app.
@bjb568 brackets.io?
@JasonC Yeah.
03:09
@bjb568 It's an Adobe product, that's what happened. I bet it was like a 12 TB download, and just for an online installer.
@JasonC I was quite surprised that it wasn't.
No installer at all, actually!
@JasonC Eww. @bjb568 has no taste in text editors.
@hichris123 Yeah I do. I use Coda.
@bjb568 Fascinating. The Adobe god must be displeased by that.

@bjb568 eh. I like Sublime better. :)
… I only use coda because sublime is complicated. Sublime text is my second least unbearable.
@hichris123 I started to address that before that comment… :P
See, I at least know what's going on.
hah
@bjb568 It's not really that complicated. I use very few features in Sublime. :P
Well, I'll download sublime 3 and see how not awful it is.
meh, the only real text editor is emacs #inb4editorwars
03:13
@Braiam emacs? sublime > vim > emacs
user259867
@Braiam Another aspect is that often one or two 20K users use their delete vote in LQRQ, but the post is deleted "from review" (by the action of six reviewers) before the 3rd 20K vote appears. So, the 20K votes are entirely wasted. Happens a lot.
@Rafflesiaarnoldii that's why I want hard data, to see if it's actually useful allowing 20k to do that
@hichris123 sublime doesn't have M-x butterfly, so no

@JasonC cuz txtspx in gnrl is wai wrs than using common abbreviations to denote common ideas

(in before someone mentions a dystopian scifi where the government managed to pull this off for quite a while)
@JanDvorak "inb4" is almost as lame as "I probably shouldn't say this, but..."
03:19
@JasonC why?
It ranks up there with "first post!"
not if your predictions are correct
@JanDvorak What do you mean why? Just make the comment.
The point is to prevent those
or can be
or at least that's how I'd like to use it
Ooh, sublime does seem to have better code folding…
03:23
No, it's a lame way of trying to say "I'm so smart, I know what's coming next, and since I don't really want to take responsibility for saying it, I'll hide it behind some cheesy snark".
can it fold Haskell code?
@JanDvorak whats dat

"Mathematically offensive"
@Rafflesiaarnoldii not true. braces delimit set literals. You can use set operators with set variables as wel.
@Rafflesiaarnoldii Huh? Isn't "my bitchez" a variable or something that represents the infinitely large set {your mom, Jan's mom, … everybody's mom …}
@JasonC *ur mom
@bjb568 that's not how set literals work in math!
user259867
@JanDvorak In this context, ∈ my bitchez means being contained in the set {my bitchez}. It's not a name of the set, it's the description of its contents.
04:38
oh. Then fail.
@JanDvorak IT WERKS IN JAVASCRIPT
@JanDvorak Doh
@bjb568 no, it doesn't
moms = [person | person <- mankind,
                 gender person = Female,

@Rafflesiaarnoldii I strongly believe "my bitchez" should have a common notation to solve this problem, though, like \mathbb{B}
user259867
04:43
That's an array, not a set.
What's the difference?
an array is an ordered random-access collection that allows repetition
user259867
The elements of an array are indexed. Their order matters. The number of times they appear also matters. The arrays [mom, dad, dad] and [dad, mom] are different. The sets {mom, dad, dad} and {dad, mom} are the same. (I can repeat the same element in set description, but this does not make any difference for the set).
a set is an unordered collection without repetition
@Rafflesiaarnoldii what a crude way to say that :-D
IT'S CLOSE ENOUGH AND IF I RITE HORRIBLE PROTOTYPE FUNCTIONS IT'LL WERK!

Why is spam usually constructed of poorly written, random sentence fragments?
I feel like it would almost be more likely to pass filters, or at least attract clicks, if it was well written and actually described the link.
@JasonC I've seen a well-written piece of spam advertising some house moving instructors.
well-written pieces of text are easier to learn by spam filters
@JanDvorak Yeah... but if it doesn't attract humans to click it then does it matter if it makes it through a filter? Unless I'm just naive and people actually do click those links.
@JasonC perhaps the spammers don't know about no-follow
