Q: Is it OK to edit and cut down an overly verbose question to try and make it a more "canonical" question?

sashoalmI landed upon a question about how to convert CP1251 to UTF-8 in Python, which was helpful to me, but it was overly verbose, taking a screen to ask a question that should have been 1-2 sentences. So I edited it, with the intention to make it better quality from the POV of a Google searcher landi...

However, that question would more accurately be titled: Is it ok to take a big question, remove important details, and condense it to 2 lines?
Furthermore, it asks about a very specific case. I'm asking about the practice in general, including a more appropriate example.

Undelete please, I just wasted several minutes of my life answering this, it's not cool that it was deleted: stackoverflow.com/questions/24481335/…

Shog9's answer on the master question you mark as duplicate is general, but it doesn't really give any answer. It sort of just offers general advice on editing. There's no definitive answer given. @random — jt0dd 3 mins ago

So where's a good place to ask a basic question about the data.stackexchange.com schema?
@FinalContest you might want to explain your downvote ;-)
Is meta.stackexchange the right place?
@Oddthinking it is, but first consider if the existing "what's the schema" question answers your question
this chat is also fine

@JanDvorak Hunting for that question now.
Here it is. Didn't answer my question.

I was just preparing a question for meta.SE, and trying to find if anyone else has already answered it, so here is the premature version: How do I find a count of anonymous feedback votes (helpful/not helpful) on a post?
If there's no table or column for it, you probably can't. Try checking for votes with null userID
@JanDvorak Thanks. Tried that. Got a lot of UpMod/AcceptedByOriginator/ModeratorReview type votes.

should I flag such posts non-constructive? ^
07:53
Can I respond to that?
(It is just a clear distraction from the point in a very negative way)
I left a comment on that post. Will you both stop argueing? You both are correct. There is no wrong in here.
@rene: he is surprised why ignore him when he is full of such comments. I have not seen many people downvoting bugreports. It is clearly about persons, not objectives and such people should have no place on this infrastructure IMHO.
I will not argue with him, I will just keep ignoring him is all.
and I flagged his comment as non-constructive of course.
hoping you doing so, too, as you seem to be unhappy about such comment, too.
@FinalContest I upvoted your bug report, looks like something went wrong with that specific item. We can't know what and why, only a dev can, and good chance it can't be reproduced.
noted: don't downvote bug reports just because you can't reproduce them.
08:11
such person = such comments => what I meant.
I still wish to see Final's avatar wall.
anyway, I will delete my question, and will never ever consider to report any bug ever again
I hope for this deletion, I will be banned from the crappy meta, too.
@FinalContest really? due to one downvote. sigh.
Could anyone forward @FinalContest my apologies for the downvote?
@JanDvorak sarcasm aside, that's quite right. But nobody can tell you how to vote. :)

How are you Jan ?

@TheLittleNaruto Hello
08:38
My messages has been flagged by someone. He keeps doing that.
And finally I have got suspended for 22 minutes!
:(
@TheLittleNaruto which messages?
I would have flagged that, too.
because upvote is more proper once you have enough reputation.
+ word choice.
@FinalContest it's a chat message
But what about this one :
in Leaf Village Ninjas on Stack Overflow Chat, 2 hours ago, by TheLittleNaruto
How are you ? @Hinata
it was flagged too
08:42
why?
@TheLittleNaruto it's veeeery offensive
I dont know
someone keeps flagging my messages
I seem to be missing something -- what exactly was the problem with @FinalContest's bug report?
and I donot have any idea
maybe that someone should get suspension.
provided that it was a thank you chat message with bad word choice, but smiley, I do not understand.
08:43
Can we know ?
flag the person for moderator attention and explain.
ah, you cannot know.
@balpha: that it was submitted by me, I think.
moderator can know who flagged ?
there are people with valid posts, who just get downvotes, not matter what, me, Hans, H2CO3, Your Common Sense, etc.
08:47
@balpha it got a downvote so he deleted it.
the difference is that some people do not care (Hans, Your Common Sense, etc) and some do (me, H2CO3, etc), but yeah, that is my explanation to myself.
I got access again :)
@CapDroid yes of course, they have a list of the flags with full details
I can chat now. :)
Thank you :)
do not write anything :D
08:49
@ShadowWizard I see that (it actually got two downvotes), but I don't see the problem with the post
@TheLittleNaruto: I will flag your thank you here, it is offensive! J/k.
@balpha see above, one downvote was due to not being able to reproduce
@TheLittleNaruto: if it continues, talk to a moderator.
for which I've already apologised
@FinalContest Okay :)
08:50
dunno about the other downvote, @balpha, but that user does have a habit of, well, alienating people.
@JanDvorak not you, the OP of the deleted bug report :/
Oh. Thanks :-)
be that as it may, that's not a reason to downvote a valid bug report
2
Later guys :)
08:53
@balpha I know. Most of us here know. But we can't force our opinions on others or tell anyone how to vote. Can we?
see you.
or change our votes past the five minute mark
@JanDvorak easily fixed by a minor edit.
if OP undeletes and edits...
@JanDvorak I smell a bribe here ;)
08:55
@balpha: as you can see, reason-free downvotes hurt at times...
"If you give me your hand, I will pull you out of the s****" - is that a bribe?
in this case, there could be a potential bugreport loss, but I do not care that much as long as SE does not care about addressing this IMHO systematic issue, either.
Could someone notify @FinalContest that he has not yet explained a downvote he's made?

hmm, I made an 5K user fall under 5K by downvoting an answer to a clearly off-topic question: http://stackoverflow.com/a/24348309/2682142
@FinalContest I asked it more than once, will ask again. What you expect SE team to do? Ban all users who downvote you?
oh, think he's ignoring me too. Great.
@FinalContest I'll undelete your bug report. Let me know if you want me to disassociate it from your account.
@JanDvorak I've made an edit, thus vote lock is cleared.
@balpha: please disassociate me, not for my sake, but SE's.
the post will get a more productive discussion by default if my name is not there.
okay, done
@balpha so you know what happened there that caused the bug?
09:04
@balpha: this, however, does not change the fact that I have given up posting bugreports. I do not want to start my Monday morning (or any for that matter) again with annoyance when I am trying to help.
@ShadowWizard there were a few DB timeouts around that time, which was the immediate cause (and the reason for the 30 second delay). But the main problem here is that the skip/edit/etc. controls aren't re-enabled after an error
@FinalContest noted
ok, cheers.
@balpha sounds familiar, think it was reported a while ago on Meta (now MSE)
@JanDvorak I don't think so. OP asking for such a link doesn't make it a valid answer.
09:12
@JanDvorak link only, but maybe those are valid on that site
> Links to external resources are encouraged, but please add context around the link so your fellow users will have some idea what it is and why it’s there. Always quote the most relevant part of an important link, in case the target site is unreachable or goes permanently offline.
@Stijn hmm.. so guess not a valid answer. Still, I prefer not to mess with sites I'm not really familiar with.
flagged anyways. Worst case I get an automated warning
@ShadowWizard where did your comment go?
09:19
@Shog9 there used to be a suspension reason on Meta like "Posting programming questions on Meta", did it go away in MSE?
@Stijn recycle bin ;)
deleted it, it got no real value
09:49
At what point do we rename the star-board to the "Final Contest board"?
It's the fi-nal con-test (cue Europe music)
@Bart is that your way of saying you currently only have one starred message? :)
@JanDvorak thanks, that's stuck in my head now
@Stijn it's not me causing the downfall of this chat
@Bart but you can help preventing this downfall! :)
Can't star my own brilliant contributions though.

@balpha: is it ok to report bugs via the team contact address?
or just meta, and that is it?
I am still happy to help in whatever way I can, outside meta.
... and answering, I guess?
@balpha: asking it because I have just found another (IMHO major) bug.
10:35
what is it?
sorry, I do not wish to get another demotivating argument here.
:facepalm:
oh... did i argue with you previously? if so i was not aware of that, or perhaps i forgot, anyway, i promise to strive toward the avoidance a repeat performance
He doesn't trust anybody, @Alex
@Alex: nah, it is not about you or past arguments with you. :-)
11:31
@FinalContest you could. Best thing is to simply put it up on Meta though. Then it's documented for everybody, avoiding duplicates. Unless it's a serious security issue, in which case a direct ping might be better.
11:42
@Bart: well, yes, my opinion was that it would be appreciated there, too, but apparently it is not the necessarily the case, so it is better to spare frustration and negative posts from there.
user163250
@Cupcake: done.
@FinalContest Or just ignore it. But up to you. I'd simply post it there and move on. Whatever happens to it is up to others.
seems people did not take the duplicate handling seriously in 2011 or there was none, I do not know.
@Bart: fine, we are all different though with different preferences.
user163250
@FinalContest thanks!
11:45
@Cupcake: btw, don't you wish to implement some missing features for me in git? ;-P
user163250
@FinalContest I'd have to learn C and Perl first, and significantly improve my Bash :P
@Final regarding the whole unexplained downvotes on good answers, even I get those every once in a while and I'm a relatively low-rep user. They annoy me too but I just try to move on, it's best to ignore it. In the end, you've helped people and that's what counts :)
@Stijn: well, maybe for you, that is what counts, and I appreciate that. My expectation (hope?) is constructive atmosphere, though.
@Cupcake: :D
@Stijn: I think it is cultural and/or preference thing. I have been working in projects for years after years, and it had not really happened that over a codereview or mailing list discussion that "your stuff sux, that is about it", or if it had happened, it was clear that it has no any value.
and I did not start picking these up after 5-10 downvotes, but after about 30-50.
@FinalContest I think it's just the internet being the internet
codereview and mailing list have been over the internet, too. My point is that SE provides a platform for this potentially non-constructive atmosphere. You can call me a troll, an unwelcoming person, etc, but that remains my sincere opinion about it.
I could also tell people "accept such opinions, and just move on" ;-)
11:53
Fair enough. Anyway, just wanted to tell you my insight :)
thanks for sharing.

The topic is SO worthy, but the quality is not the best:
1) Long title
2) No QtCreator version specified
3) QT is written, not Qt.
4) Screenshot would be nice.
