After I've been outvoted there more than twice on "obviously crappy" questions, of which one got raised to the heavens and even bountied, and the other didn't have the time to... I officially give up moderating the quality of posts on Mathematics. If it's not outright advertising or astroturfing, it's probably fine.

Even career/education advice is welcome on that site.

A messy part of this issue is the question of what constitutes English. Besides the existence of various versions of English (American, British, Australian, etc), there is the fact that many words have been taken into English while retaining their foreign spelling and pronunciation. (If you were to say that the stack exchange websites are part of the Zeitgeist ushered in by the internet, I would say “Touché!”) So, in an “English-only” environment would you be (implicitly/unintentionally) forbidden to use those words? - and even if not, would some self-censorship be taking place anyway? — Mike Jones Aug 30 '11 at 3:31

@Rahul: by the way, being a professional mathematician does not confer reading knowledge of French as a magical power. It is certainly not the case that all math PhDs can read math in French. It depends a lot on (i) their age, (ii) their subject area [e.g. algebraic geometry is highly correlated with reading French, graph theory not so much] and (iii) their enthusiasm about learning a foreign language (as well as (iv) the language requirements of their PhD program, but these are increasingly vestigial). — Pete L. Arabic and Portuguese are both far more populous than Vietnamese-speaking countries.

Vietnam is awesome though.

Malay/Javanese gets you all of Malaysia and Indonesia, and parts of Borneo. It's a lot of people.

Arabic: 350m, Portuguese: 217m, Indonesian: 160m, Vietnamese: 68m

Chinese demographics are headed in the wrong direction and are only used in China -- this greatly limits the use of the language much like Japanese.

The number of speakers of Chinese is also massive, especially counting those who are bilingual, meaning that you are going to have a lot of competition when marketing your skills compared to a less popular language like Malay/Indonesian, or Arabic.

Portuguese may be a bit more difficult since there are speakers in Europe (and they are generally very multi-lingual meaning you'll have competition), but for Asian languages, you'll have a lot less trouble with Malay/Indonesian than you will with Chinese or Japanese!

As a Japanese speaker, I wish I had studied a different language.

Q: Allow spectators to see vote tallies in primaries

Currently, it appears that you can't see the vote totals on nominees during the primaries if you don't have enough reputation to vote: presumably, that's because the voting widget is disabled. It would be great to be able to see how the election is doing as a spectator. In case it isn't clear, ...
