yay!
My rep graph makes other sites look sad and pathetic.
haha
00:14
@Undo Your nomination is now at +8.
Wha? How...
Not my socks, I promise.
hehe
hi
My first time on meta
hi
welcome ;)
00:18
@Vader Hello Darth Vader. We accept your kind here. :P
Thanks buts it Darth Vader
:P
haha
Ug, my brain stopped working for a second there. :P
how come I only see 6 of the peoples avatars in this room?
@Vader As in the rest of them don't show up?
00:19
Yeah thet rest of them do not show up
Odd...
Refresh the page maybe?
You probably have Gravatar blocked.
Have you tried reloading?
@animuson Ah, it's probably this.
@animuson ah yes
Thanks @animuson
I couldn't find a question like mine that had this answer on meta
Ghostery (chrome addon) was blocking it
00:29
HTC went and made my music player even more convenient to use. <3
Hahahaha it re-enabled Twitter in my phone book for some reason and when I opened it up the first thing I see is Andrew Barber's unicorn.
ha!
@animuson That sounds like an absolutely awful euphemism.

"Hello, I have a little problem with an exercise. Consider the fun...

EEEEEK!
What's worst is that it's +6/-3
and the answers are french + english as well
should we support that?
00:43
No, anything that's not English should be removed.
you could just translate it in google
so, edit out the french half?
Yeap. It's an English site, not a French site.
I don't have editing rights, though, and the reviewers might not be too happy.
Just translate everything with a good edit comment explaining that it's an English site, and has been translated from french.
00:45
already french/english
You could even include a nice that has a link to the revision in the original language, in French.
All the posts have a French and English version. The French versions simply need removed.
anyone here with edit privileges on math.se?
I can... uh... edit CW posts!
the last two revisions were done by an 83k and by a 144k, improving the french version.
00:49
Which is utterly sad itself.
They are mathematicians! They have no use for our imprecise and unwieldy 'languages'. The symbols speak for themselves!
I've sent there three suggested edits... let's see how they turn out.
can you get a link to your suggestion before it gets reviewed?
@JanDvorak They all just got rejected... :(
@JanDvorak This is not an English-only site; adding a translation is fine and good, but please do not remove the original question text. — T. Bongers 2 mins ago
should @animuson rush in to their meta?
00:59
@GnomeSlice Cool, did you make that?
@hichris123 Yeah.
Still needs audio
That's an idiotic policy. But even so, I'm pretty sure Stack Exchange's policy is that the title would have to always be in English, no matter what.
@GnomeSlice I had audio off, so didn't even notice. :P I like it.
@animuson You should make another You're doing it wrong post. ;)
should I suggest a new edit that only changes the title?
Meh, ping a CM and ask them if you really care.
I don't particularly.
01:04
After I've been outvoted there more than twice on "obviously crappy" questions, of which one got raised to the heavens and even bountied, and the other didn't have the time to... I officially give up moderating the quality of posts on Mathematics. If it's not outright advertising or astroturfing, it's probably fine.
Even career/education advice is welcome on that site.
@JanDvorak That meta post is absolutely ridiculous overthinking:
A messy part of this issue is the question of what constitutes English. Besides the existence of various versions of English (American, British, Australian, etc), there is the fact that many words have been taken into English while retaining their foreign spelling and pronunciation. (If you were to say that the stack exchange websites are part of the Zeitgeist ushered in by the internet, I would say “Touché!”) So, in an “English-only” environment would you be (implicitly/unintentionally) forbidden to use those words? - and even if not, would some self-censorship be taking place anyway? — Mike Jones Aug 30 '11 at 3:31
status-facepalm
^ That looks better. :P
I'd say status-headdesk, but I'm using a coffee table.
> someone posts an answer in a foreign language (like French) that a large percentage of professional mathematicians can read but for which a much smaller percentage of anglophone students can read. Posting such an answer could actually make it less likely that the OP will receive an answer s/he can read and understand.
01:08
status-headcoffeetable
Really? a large portion of mathematicians can read French? You learn something new every day!
s/mathematicians/math.se community/
Math.se should be renamed to fr-en.math.se
Rationality!
@Rahul: by the way, being a professional mathematician does not confer reading knowledge of French as a magical power. It is certainly not the case that all math PhDs can read math in French. It depends a lot on (i) their age, (ii) their subject area [e.g. algebraic geometry is highly correlated with reading French, graph theory not so much] and (iii) their enthusiasm about learning a foreign language (as well as (iv) the language requirements of their PhD program, but these are increasingly vestigial). — Pete L. Clark Feb 8 '11 at 21:16
I can read some french
If I ever legitimately learn another language, it will be Japanese.
01:11
@animuson not Lojban?
I don't know what that is.
I ate this entire pizza but I'm still hungry...
Lojban (pronounced ) is a constructed, syntactically unambiguous human language based on predicate logic, succeeding the project of Loglan. The name "Lojban" is a compound formed from loj and ban, which are short forms of logji (logic) and bangu (language), respectively. Development of the language began in 1987 by The Logical Language Group (LLG), who intended to realize Loglan's purposes as well as further complement the language by making it more usable, and freely available (as indicated by its official full English name "Lojban: a realization of Loglan"). After a long initial period ...
I remember from my old French elementary school the phrase, "Ooh la la!" dites Beatrice, "comme c'est complique!"
@jmac Qui est Beatrice?
@animuson Highly recommend Malay/Javanese, Brazilian, or Arabic actually. All will likely be far more useful in the future due to population demographics.
It was from a textbook with Baxter and Beatrice. They were learning French or somesuch. And they were always having trouble with stuff.
01:13
I learn things because they're interesting to me, not because they'll be valuable in the future.
if demographics is a concern, I suggest Vietnamese.
Arabic and Portuguese are both far more populous than Vietnamese-speaking countries.
Vietnam is awesome though.
Malay/Javanese gets you all of Malaysia and Indonesia, and parts of Borneo. It's a lot of people.
We have a lot of vietnamese in Czech Republic
I refer you to wikipedia:
then chinese, nah?
01:18
Arabic: 350m, Portuguese: 217m, Indonesian: 160m, Vietnamese: 68m
Chinese demographics are headed in the wrong direction and are only used in China -- this greatly limits the use of the language much like Japanese.
The number of speakers of Chinese is also massive, especially counting those who are bilingual, meaning that you are going to have a lot of competition when marketing your skills compared to a less popular language like Malay/Indonesian, or Arabic.
but you can w@tch 0nline fr33 manga and anime if you learn japanese
Portuguese may be a bit more difficult since there are speakers in Europe (and they are generally very multi-lingual meaning you'll have competition), but for Asian languages, you'll have a lot less trouble with Malay/Indonesian than you will with Chinese or Japanese!
As a Japanese speaker, I wish I had studied a different language.

I'll trade my Japanese for your Java in a heartbeat. I'll even toss in life in Japan if you let me take your Czech beer!
01:25
I'll trade anything for your rep, even my rep!
@jmac come here, it's just $1
@JanDvorak I plan to. Maybe at the end of this year.
I have US in April/May, Bali in August, so I have to plan something for December/January.
The weather is getting better just now
(and $1 beer sounds like paradise, or a horrible idea.)
no more snow since today or so
01:30
With $1 beer, what does the weather matter? Don't like the weather? Have another round!
@jmac Where in the US?
New England.
@jmac Czech beer is great! But you have to pick the pub well. Anything above $1.5 is expensive. Basically anything in the center of Prague is overpriced.
I love Czech beer. Nice crisp pilsners, and really strong ales.
Have you tried Svijany?
01:33
And really, $1.5 for a beer? Not expensive. In Japan they'll run you $7 or $8, so $1.5 is like free beer.
Also, slovaks have some pretty good beer AFAIR
I don't think I've had Svijany. I am more than happy to try every beer I find when I visit.
@jmac depends on the place. Some restaurants just love to set the price way too high.
and hotels
I think I've seen a $7 or so price tag at one hotel on Wenceslas' square for a small beer (0.3L). That's way overpriced.
I really need to go learn to skate sometime.
ice-skate, or roller-skate?
01:40
Ice skating.
I've tried once, but I didn't find the right size of skates.
The only problem I have is I never learned how to stop.
@animuson easy; any wall or a patch of grass will do. Better wear gloves.
Haha well if I want to become a hockey referee I can't go slamming into walls all the time.
hmm... true
but, as a player, you can use the players of the opposing team.
01:45
@animuson Ice hockey skates have the brakes on them (the jagged parts on the front and back of the blade), and you can always stop by turning sideways with a little hop.
I'm aware of what you're supposed to do, but stopping still requires some balancing that I just couldn't get down.
aka I always fell over instead.
You could design a pair of super-skates equipped with crampons and retractable skate blades for ultimate stopping performance
Let me just attach some rockets to the back too
@jmac James Bond style??
The Google logo is very colorful...
@animuson ^ is it okay to flag VLQ on answers like that?
02:28
@Braiam Um... what? :P
> Try to write it in jQuery.
Rep please!
@animuson I'd "upvote" if I knew what I was voting on.
noooooooooo I must have accidentally reviewed a suggested edit at one point and now I have 1338 reviews :(
it was so... perfect :P
03:31
2525 rep now. :P

Q: Allow spectators to see vote tallies in primaries

user149432Currently, it appears that you can't see the vote totals on nominees during the primaries if you don't have enough reputation to vote: presumably, that's because the voting widget is disabled. It would be great to be able to see how the election is doing as a spectator. In case it isn't clear, ...

there's 50 meta repz hanging in the air there for whoever can provide a decent answer...
03:51
@Undo On tablet. :P

05:57
@Shog9 As requested, your meta questions has arrived. Remember to keep it clean, and no hits below the belt.
06:50
I just noticed that the KitKat update today removed all those stupid emoticons in text messages. I LOVE YOU HTC!
07:07
@animuson when do you sleep exactly? You're always up in the middle of the night. Is it because of work? You just really like owls? You are a vampire?
07:26
He does sleep, one eye open - like birds.
@TimPost Actially, my parents told me I do sleep with my eyes open. I didn't believe them, but I'm not that curious to like record myself sleeping.
That may be why I never got caught sleeping in high school.
I never got caught sleeping in high school because I attended very infrequently :)
07:47
utterly confused
The hot tropical climate has gotten to @Tim, batten down the hatches!
Hmmm glass of milk or glass of lemonade? Decisions...

morning
Evening.
What do you say for 2am?
@animuson That's morning.
Man that's some strong lemonade.
08:13
@animuson well 2am is a bit of a special one. 5am is morning regardless of if you're awake from lastnight or just woken up, but 2am you could probably get away with saying night/evening
08:59
morning
You can't force that on me. I ain't no part of your system.
And besides, the weather is so terrible that it's almost evening over here and I'm in a dark office with a single light.
yesterday, by rene
Resistance is futile
Haha
Well played
Anyhow, goedemorgen
@Bart I'm not convinced that the weather is directly linked to the time of day
Tnx @Bart
Is it gutenmorgen for you?
09:07
Locally it's bonjour for me @rene. But for me personally it's goedemorgen. Although, given that I almost exclusively speak English over here, good morning will do.
All I know is that when it's dark, I sleep @Flyk
Ah, you're on the French side of Suisse
Yep, Geneva
@Bart do you sleep significantly more during winter?
I've been known to hibernate.
09:40
hibernating is the best
I had a solid 12 hours of sleep lastnight
woke up 5 minutes before my alarm went off
only me gradually turning in a vampire here? what is the reason behind this bad habit of ... sleeping?
@SPArchaeologist oh, I'm totally a creature of the night
but my new job requires that I wake up at 6am ish
to add more pain to the equation
merely being off work for the weekend causes my sleep pattern to invert
and if I have a week off, I switch completely to Austrailian time
....nice. Somehow got 85 rep yesterday on SharePoint.... and that still seem like a victory. Not even half the day cap.
does that site not hand out many upvotes then?
we have 24 good answer badges on the whole site. 0 great answer ones and 21 Mortarboard
no legendary. no epic even
only 24?
10:42
For a site called SharePoint, that's a low number of shared points
with 3k rep I am on the second page of the all user view
that should say.
see? fourth row
I suppose I should switch to Anime and try for the "One Piece" guru badge.
that's pretty... broken
I've noticed that sites around here tend to have lots of voting at the start and then they drop off quite quickly
like people get bored of voting or something
nine <10k rep user. One of them is already a mod.
At leas, we don't get much to review either, so I suppose that those 8 demi-mod and the actual mods are more than enough to mange the site
10:49
Oh come on @JanDvorak. You don't like Dr. David?
Nothing says GMail tech support like a man in a white coat with a stethoscope
@JanDvorak interesting that this wasn't detected by the smoke detector
@Manishearth did you turn the smoke detector off?
@Flyk smoke detector is probably off
Flagged @JanDvorak
I flagged @JanDvorak as well, I don't think he deserves it though.
he was only reporting spam
@Flyk wait, why?
10:54
:D
@JanDvorak lol, it was a joke, don't worry :P
I did once flag somebody who said "flag please"
it got approved...
every day that passes, this board resemble the "Ridiculous Fishing" Birdyr a little more.
should I change my username to "@RodAndGunsMan"?
:P
Hmmm... if I get 89 people to view this, I get another famous question badge ;)
@Flyk now 88?
85 actually
noooo
(removed)
11:06
@Flyk That's so peculiar. The question is viewed so heavily, the answer and question obviously helpful to people but no score at all. Sure, that's partly due to many of those views being anonymous, it's just peculiar is all.
also, pls flag all other posts of this user nothing else to flag
The thing has five accounts
but only two answers
11:12
yep
for now
@TimPost the same goes for most of my content
I'll keep an eye on his accounts
@TimPost I have more extreme examples I think
Like this or maybe this one...
that second one has nearly 60k reviews
Mmmmmm, nothing like the smell of coffee along with freshly roasted Nigerian spammers.
11:14
I wish I could smell anything at the moment
I'm so flu'd up
The accounts are created way back (30 days and 54 days old)
Yep. 'sleepers'
Ah, you have a name for those
They're becoming exceedingly rare, but yes. Generally they show up in batches of 3 - 5 and are controlled by an actual human that is being paid to plant spam.
@Flyk It wasn't off (it reports to Charcoal when it dies), but it stopped recieving websocket connections. Periodic refreshing of connections is planned
11:16
@Manishearth ah ok
on now
@Manishearth what's the ETA? It shouldn't be too hard
@JanDvorak none, I'm swamped for the next two weeks
Is there any way to check whether it would have matched that post linked in Charcoal?
should I do that?
11:18
@JanDvorak sure
@TimPost you only nuke accounts that don't play by the rules?
@rene why would you nuke an account that does play by the rules?
@Flyk that's easy: no one wants to upvote a question about Mist of Kung-Fu Panda ? coff coff coff. :P
@rene We don't nuke accounts unless (1) we see them contribute spam or (2) we see spam they tried to contribute blocked by the filters.
You don't nuke accounts as precaution?
11:24
@rene would you?
Yes, I would.
@SPArchaeologist did you see some of the numbers on these questions?
my WoW questions generated 750k views for Arqade
like this one (475k views) and this one (190k views)
not huge by SO numbers, but 475k views puts it in the top 10 questions by views on the site
top 5, actually!
@Flyk and that is what I said. Considered the scandal it caused, no one want to make it know that they upvoted World of Pandas, but in the end everyone is playing it. Just like with pokemon.... they say it is for kids but they keep playing. ^_^
lol pokemon
but yeah, you're right, I quit WoW like three weeks after pandas came out
my understanding is they've been shedding numbers ever since
I quit WoW before it was cool </hipster>
Try with a more "macho" title like NetHack, VJoe and such... and you will receive votes from everyone , even people that never played it
They want to say "I voted! I have finished Joe on ultra V rated with Alastor"
11:30
@SPArchaeologist How can I tell a corpse is safe to eat?
@Flyk Exactly.
I fail at the Arqade meta-game
(question titles that are hilarious out of context)
I did ask "How can I cook meth?" though
Try "I have given some rotten meat to my vegetarian girlfriend and now she is mad" for Pandora Towers....
that's not a question
Add "How can I remedy? " at the end
11:37
then it wraps onto multiple lines
which is bad
fails my requirements for a good title
bonus point if someone replies "Kill a guard outside and bring her the loot"
Ok. Then what about "Where can I find more grass to woe Muffy" for Harvest Moon?
that one joking on the fact that a bug caused a character to like the grass you grow in your fields as a gift.

1 hour later…
12:52
@stackoverloop Please stop trolling
Writing your posts in semi-Dutch or Italian, when you know full well the site is English (which I'm pretty sure you can handle just fine) is not appropriate.
13:05
? did I miss something?
Just some nonsense on meta @SPArchaeologist. Given that I saw him here, I thought it'd be better to ping it here rather than muddy Meta even further
ooooook. But rest assured, that stuff is not Italian.
That comment is gone by now. Although my Italian is not good enough to distinguish it from Google Translate Italian
yep, found your comment about it.
Spring is coming. SharePoint bears & users are coming out of their caves and start voting.
Trad: I have had more rep the last two days than in the last three months.
I'm just horrified by that distinction between bears and users there. As if bears can't be users. This bear-segregation has to stop.
13:15
In a SharePoint context (SPContext to be more precise O_o) the term "Bears" seems more appropriate for IT staff members. Aka the guys that keep sleeping and forget to apply CU
13:31
@Bart are you able to see if this is stackoverloop again?
I wouldn't be surprised
At least the question is not problematic. Might be a coincidence
from his profile I try to win the dislike of others.
Yeah, and given that his username is along the same lines as stackoverloop ...
This is something for Tim Post to see the IP-addresses used
Unless he's one of those highly sophisticated Tor users cough

13:36
Yeah in that case we are doomed...
no i no speak dutch i speak italian. ah yes but forse it not translate gud dis is way i ask you ;) — Stacco Oltre il Flow baby 39 secs ago

A: http post from java to php curl

Jyoti Ranjancd /home/lipu/Desktop $password = nero su http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/0.62/htmldoc/Chapter7.html#plink-usage plink -pw passw javac HelloWorld.java java HelloWorld

Does anyone know why?
I'm not a PHP guy, but I'm fairly sure that isn't even remotely related
Neither is his other answer on the same question
It's a crap answer, but it's an answer. Or at least, at a passing glance you might think it is.
it's not even the same language
If you want to successfully cast such a flag, just go for the "other" option.
And explain that it doesn't even remotely attempt to answer the question.
13:44
oh wait, at the top it's Java. But still, the first one..
yeah, perhaps for the best
I just noticed, his English seems to be just fine
Yeah @Stijn. Hence why I told him to stop trolling. And why I told Martijn to stop putting so much effort into it with his Dutch and translations.
And there we have our not ubnoxious @Undo :)
Based on some of the words he uses, he should be Italian.
If we consider the grammar .... he must be a school student . That, or he is really trying the best to sound like Beavis.
Haha. Well, I don't really know what my French sounds like to others. If it's Beavis-like I'll take it.
@JeroenVannevel I downvoted the answers and left a snarky comment
13:56
That's all a man can do
What's the proper channel to request a question merge?
I visited the links he posted but they don't appear to be span so I couldn't flag for that reason...
@Bart: I was talking about "Stacco Oltre il Flow"
@rene thanks
Why @rene?
