Do we really need the tag on SO?

One of the most neglected items in SE sites is fixing the synonym queues for usability, productiveness and notification.

Q: Request tag synonym approval [tz] => [timezone]

Matt JohnsonIn attempting to keep things clean, a very long time ago I suggested a tag synonym on StackOverflow for the tz tag to be merged with timezone (tz has 25 questions, timezone has 3,941). I guess nobody looks at tag synonym votes at all. How is it ever supposed to reach the required 4 votes? I ...

@hichris123, I dunno, seems like there might be some play with credit-card programming stuff. The excerpt was really messed up, so I edited that.

@LanceRoberts Yeah, the problem is that it looks like from a quick glance a lot of it is off topic.

Yeh, that could be, looks like a good project for someone who needs an editing badge.

@LanceRoberts In my next lifetime.

12:53 AM
I've a long list of SO projects also, but less incentive to get to them now that I've got all the editing badges (and not that much time).

I don't really care about the badges, I'm just making a goal of getting to 2K rep soon on SO.

Yeh, I need to focus more on SO rep, just takes time to test answers out. Less than 80 rep to go for 10k.

That's true. I tend to answer stuff that I have used before, or can adapt something that I've used to the question.

Any idea how you got the pointy hat?

Yes...
You want it?
Two hints: It's the meta version of a non-sekrit one, and Shog said something about 10 of the most useless points on the internet.

1:00 AM
Hmm, I'll have to study the normal hats then.
Wow, I don't see a single hat that is worth exactly 10 rep, the mystery deepens.
Ok, think I got it figured out, we'll see.

1:22 AM
@LanceRoberts What do you think it is?
Do you really have to delete it that quickly? Didn't even see it.

My credit-card tag wiki got rejected by those who don't understand the use and formatting of tag-wiki excerpts. I'll try again.

Yep.
Why can't you edit them without peer-review?

On SO, I'm not 20k. I can do it on Meta.
Tag wikis have higher limits.
Gotta go, later.

Oh, I was thinking it came with the approve/deny part.
See ya.

1:40 AM
@animuson or anyone dev/CM: has this ever been figured out?

Q: Can a user gain more than 2 rep for editing?

Christmas UnicornI edited this post and noticed my reputation change from 1466 to 1470 (i.e +4). I went to check my reputation changes and found: Note: My reputation later went down from 1470 to 1468, so it appears the system realized it made a mistake and corrected my reputation, but hasn't gotten rid of ...

Or @9Shogsa-Shogging

@hichris123 I'm surprised that the great reopening of Spam Review is still open.
And with a score of 9

@RyanCarlson I don't think the mods/CM's care, really, since they're not going to reopen it unless we can make it into a real site.

Yeah
@hichris123 We should get 200 people together at one time, then create a new spam review proposal. Everyone would immediately follow it, upvote the example questions, and then commit to it, so it would be "fully committed" before any mods got a chance to close it.

Wonder how that would go over...
Honestly, I want to do that except for the flag queue. Undo and I are plotting.
With comment flags.

We'd probably get suspended or something.
I just had a great idea!

1:51 AM
For which? Flags or Spam review?

something else

What is it?

We should make a "Procrastinators Exchange"
I'll propose it...

What would the questions be?

tomorrow
XD
Example question: "How should—wait, I haven't thought this out fully yet. I'll update this tomorrow"

1:54 AM
I like that one.

Cool!
I'll start it tomorrow
Actually probably the day after
I'm sort of busy procrastinating right now.

2:06 AM
@hichris123 I just read all about your and Undo's comment flagging.
I'm quite surprised at the 89.79595% accuracy rate

@RyanCarlson Where?

No, I know, but did you look for replies from Undo to me?

Or do you mean where did I read about it?

Yes.

2:14 AM
...places...

...
Where?
And the 89% I don't think is being updated.

Dec 19 at 0:00, by hichris123
@Undo Sometime we should really flag tons of comments and make the mods go crazy.

I've only not flagged one comment I think that the tool has given me.

And after that
And also on

 Charcoal HQ

Where smoke is detected, diamonds are made, and we break thing...

Room owner here.
You want a ban? :)

2:16 AM
...Why?

Yes, would you like to join the club?

Sure
I think

@Undo When you're back into internet land, give @RyanCarlson a login for Charcoal.

What exactly does "joining the club" entail?

It's Undo's tool, and he's in low-bandwith internet.

2:17 AM
I know
I saw

It's just being able to use Undo's tool to flag obsolete comments.

2:56 AM
I arrive.

Oh, hello @Undo

@UndotheSnowman I remain.

Lol
I have LTE internet.
With one problem:
It's on a mobile phone with a 2 gig cap

Ha.

You win some, you lose some.

2:58 AM
2GB a month

Yup
So, @RyanCarlson wants a login?

Chat can't take up too much data.
Yeah, he's off, though.

grumbles to self about making decent signup sytem

Hmm...find any hacks for personal information yet, @Undo

posts gifs to use up data

2:59 AM
And oneboxes.

mostly gifs

@hichris123 personal info?
Like what?

Emails.

Mobile chat doesn't even show oneboxes, does it?

So he doesn't have to be asked for it.

3:00 AM
@ElfSlice Mobile hotspot.
I'm on my laptop

You'll probably use up more data that way.

(but it does show oneboxes)

If you're worried about conserving it.

Yeah, but I want my keyboard.

I doubt he cares.
He just wants us to feel bad for him.

3:01 AM
@hichris123 It's Manish's job to find PII leaks. Not mine.

I've already used up like 1GB today alone.
@Undo I'm trying to find a hack for dev. Not working...

@hichris123 They locked it up pretty tight.
There's still one left...

@Undo Wow, the devs lazy or something? Or you wanted your backdoor to dev?

Meh, the chances are pretty low of someone else finding this one.

Now I know what my project is...

3:04 AM
Heh

Just warning you now.
Though I don't really know how to exploit and find bugs.

Better idea: hack Charcoal

Who cares, SO can teach me that.

> How can I hack in to dev.so?

@Undo I saw the Github repo, so I can just see what is wrong/bugged/can be exploited in it.

3:06 AM
> I really want to see the junk that devs post. Please send teh tips for hacking into dev.so.
@hichris123 Oh.
That's cheating

No way.
Fair game, you posted it.

Better idea: Fork the repro, fix the stuff, and send a pull request :P
And I will attempt to figure out how to merge things.

Do you think I could post that in SO?
And not get banned?

No
Well, you might not get banned....

Hey, I don't really know PHP, whatever else you did it with, but I can learn.
Hey, I didn't get banned with Spam Review reopening.
(I know I just posted 2 things starting with Hey, I. Weird, right?)
@Undo "echo "This is currently broked. Sorry!""?
Broken, possibly?

3:44 AM
sigh
i'm at the point where i feel like the VTC queue is really the only place where i can do anything any more

@DennisMeng What do you mean?

Just click 'accept' on everything. Quantity!

@hichris123 99.9% of the questions for which I have any real chance of helping with seem to be questions that really should be closed

Only 9 more up votes needed. Wink wink nudge nudge.

@hichris123 Kinda an mSO meme, kinda a typo :P

3:50 AM
i've gotten exactly 9 rep on SO this month. Amazing. >.<

The correct spelling is 'borked'

@Undo I found why Charcoal isn't working on IE. Now to fix it is another problem.

@hic Why?

And you used jQuery? Come on, too many memes.

3:53 AM
:D

i love hats indeed

@Undo For some reason, it isn't loading this:
<div class="modal-body">
                    <form class="form-signin" action="index.php" method="post">
                                            <input name="username" id="username" type="text" class="input-block-level" placeholder="Username">
                      <input name="password" type="password" id="password" class="input-block-level" placeholder="Password">
                      <button class="btn btn-medium btn-primary" type="submit" style="width:300">Login</button>
                    </form>

Only modal-header is loading

what version of IE?

3:54 AM
IE9

That may be the problem.

IE9 borks everything

Too much effort to upgrade.

Reminds me of the one time I tried to demo something in IE
the laptop I was using had IE6

3:55 AM
Upgrade and help save developers everywhere!

and of course, I find out a week later that the code long since stopped supporting IE6 >.<

Umm... I'll just use Chrome, since 99% of everything else works on IE9.
Oh, it loads properly using compatibility mode, but doesn't do something with the logon button.
I forget exactly what happens.

Argh. Must get off this tablet.
i keep missing buttons.
i was after edit and hit delete.

What tablet?

this one.

3:57 AM
Name?

iPad + bad connection

@hichris123 "Charlie"

and a sleepy user

I call mine "Dave" though

Woohoo I got back on my laptop.

3:58 AM
Come on, you should use Android. Everyone knows it's the iPad's fault.

@Everyone get in here.

@ElfSlice Why Dave?

I don't actually, I was just making a joke.
My dad's name is Dave though, does that count?

Is your dad a tablet?
2
Otherwise, no.

I thought you were refering to HAL and 2001.

3:59 AM
Hah!

@ElfSlice So if you're the child of a tablet, what does that make you?

tries to hunt down Everyone

@hichris123 A smartwatch?

@Undo Wow.

4:01 AM
@UndotheSnowman Hahahahaha

He's pretty neat.
He was on the original team during the really early days on Space.SE
(and is)

@Undo You should be pretty happy. I'm getting close to 100 flags.

is happy
@hichris123 Yay!

@hichris123 Given or received?

@ElfSlice Do you keep a count of how many times you are flagged?
Given.

4:03 AM
@hichris123 No, I can't count that high.

@Undo I think I'm at like 80-some. 700-something helpful.
@ElfSlice Are elfs not smart or something?

I'm usually a Gnome

@hichris123 He asked Anna once, and Anna said that she couldn't say because there wasn't a counter on the flags-against-ElfSlice page

GnomeSlice

@Undo Feature request?

4:04 AM
@UndotheSnowman I was given a rough number by someone else. I have more than 100 more than the next guy. I'm the only one in triple digits. So it's got to be somewhere around 130-199

@ElfSlice How do you get so many flags?
And how don't you get banned?

@hichris123 I get banned constantly.

@hichris123 He gets banned.

I even had a six month ban which ended earlier this year.

Say... @hichris123 what did you do in the Charcoal room?
in Charcoal HQ on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 1 hour ago, by MBraedley
@hichris123 I was notified of the flag.

4:06 AM
Mostly because I get mad and curse at people or post pictures of ladies that I probably shouldn't.

I flagged my own message.

I... umm...
Ok

I don't know why you can do that, but you can.
Seeing if I would be able to handle it since I'm a room owner.

You can't

@hichris123 You can't.

4:06 AM
10k users have to do that.

I figured that out.

Also someone tried changing their name to 'GnomeSlice' and posted the message "Yeah that guy is a jerk" (referring to their actual self) and got suspended when someone flagged it
in The Bridge on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, Sep 5 at 19:32, by Jason Berkan
@Wipqozn Science confirms that people don't like @GnomeSlice.

reminds self not to change name to GnomeSlice

Probably a good idea

Should I try that...
Hmm...

4:08 AM
I tried changing to my real name a while ago, and changing how I act in chat to clean up my image but it didn't work.

What do you do wrong?

shrug
I get angry and curse at people sometimes. And I post images I shouldn't sometimes without thinking.

Anything not on chat?

No, only in chat.
Although I got a 3 month site ban from Arqade with my 6 month chat ban for circumventing the accidental site suspension in the first place
I still come back because stackexchange is basically the extent of my life.

How did you circumvent the ban? New account?

4:12 AM
@hichris123 Yeah I had a sockpuppet. They said the suspension was an error but I guess I shouldn't have circumvented it anyway. I had a post all typed up and stuff and thought they could just merge it with my other account later.
Oh well.
That's neither here nor there.
Multiple people in the gaming chat have me blocked as well.

Now you make me feel like a saint.

They think I'm a troll

Do you have a giant onebox in real life?

What?

4:16 AM
Are you a giant onebox, or did you make a giant onebox in real life?

I... no...
How does that even work

You tell me.
You're the oneboxing king.

4:30 AM
@hichris123 I am?

4:42 AM
@ElfSlice Of course.

5:11 AM
Dat retro feel!

2 hours later…
7:11 AM

My new greatest idea:

Q: Implement secret badges

Lance RobertsAfter watching the flurry of activity, and people (i.e. myself) trying to do a lot of stuff to try and get some of the secret hats, I realized that it might be worthwhile for SE to give out secret badges. Some criteria and specs: more work than gold ones of the same type shown with some specia...

@LanceRoberts We're actually considering that now

Oohhh, got lucky I did.
Ugghh, I hate bad audits.

@LanceRoberts You might have just set a new record for the fastest status-something tag being applied to a feature request.

That's funny, when I was writing it, I was wondering how much rep it would cost me!

7:27 AM
They'd be secret insofar as they wouldn't appear on the badges page, but you'd know why you earned one when you did. There's also been ideas for sites themselves earning badges.

Per-site special badges sounds like a cool idea. It will add to the community feel.

Permanent secrets don't work though.
Just take a look at how many of the secret hats are public knowledge already

They'd have to be double secret.

7:58 AM
@TinyTim secret badges sounds awesome, but only if you'll keep changing the way to get them or recycle the secret badges list once in a while otherwise they would become just bunch of more badges. Any ETA beyond 6-8 weeks for this? ;)

8:31 AM
@TinyTim Nope; the record is 9 seconds. (DE query)
Oops, fail, that's a .
The real record is 52 seconds.

@michaelb958'saSleigh nice find, I was going to post it and didn't notice you already found it :)
I have the honor (?) to post quite a lot of feature requests that get statused really fast :D

Hi, someone seems to be doing serial upvote on my top voted answers these seconds... is there anything to worry about?

@LaszloPapp nope, comments are 3rd class citizens

@LaszloPapp Nobody worries about comment upvotes.

s/comments/answers/

8:40 AM
I think there's no defences on this, just enjoy the... well, nothing really comes from this :)

probably a satisfied user to whom I gave a good answer or who would do it? :)

@LaszloPapp The script will probably reverse it at 03:00 UTC. That's all that happens.

8 upvotes the last few seconds, and it keeps going up...

Maybe also someone testing how many comments votes we have per day

yes, exactly, that is what I thought, too.
lol

8:41 AM
Or someone trying out a bot
@michaelb958'saSleigh no, script reverse only "real" votes e.g. those cast on posts

Or a dev trying out //api.stackexchange.com/2.2/posts/{id}/upvote. (I can dream...)

perhaps my mother giving christmas gift. :D

@ShadowWizard Wait, I thought he was talking about answer votes now.
2 mins ago, by Laszlo Papp
s/comments/answers/

oops!

13 upvotes.... and it keeps coming.

8:43 AM
I can swear he wrote comments

@ShadowWizard He did. He then edited.

Well, answers are totally different thing @LaszloPapp
Yes it will be reversed

as fast as I get the 5K reputation level, I will lose it tonight. ;)

@michaelb958'saSleigh yeah, still not used to this chat where posts can be edited

They need a special hat for midnight lurkers.

8:44 AM
You can get max of +400 from a single users this way

@ShadowWizard: you mean not one day, but overall?
in any case, I can go abuse the system and review tag edits now for a few hours!

Does anyone know if there is any secret hat for maxing all the review queues in a day?

@LanceRoberts you mean hat?

I was almost there yesterday, but couldn't get enough 'Late Answers' in.

@Lance, nope

8:46 AM
Whoops, yes, edited.

I did it once, but I got nothing.

No secret badges just yet

ah, hat.

Not even hacker badge :(

btw, is it possible to hide certain review queues in the review tab?

8:47 AM
@LaszloPapp there are 40 votes for each user per day, so it's +400 per day but likely it will just be reversed, and if repeated that user will get suspended

@ShadowWizard Errr... rep cap?

@ShadowWizard: yes, it is 40 per day, and the votes will be reverted as discussed.

@michaelb958'saSleigh lol totally slipped my mind. Well, make it +200 per day :D

@LaszloPapp, so you did the review queue max thing since the 16th and got nothing?

To sum this up, this is harmful as valid votes won't have effect one you hit rep cap

8:49 AM
Lance, I think it was between 10-16th, sorry.

@LaszloPapp why would you want to hide review queues??

true, it is harmful actually since I cannot get the real votes today after the repcap reached.
can some moderator revert them now? Probably not, I guess, since it is all automated.
@ShadowWizard: because I do not care about certain review queues.

Moderators can't revert votes, I'm pretty sure on this one... they can only see suspicous voting patterns. Maybe dev can though. Too bad it's Sunday!

@ShadowWizard: I would like to concentrate on helping newcomers, like first posts, so if it is like that, I would not like to see anything else. This is just an example.

@LaszloPapp so just open the desired queues, each in its own tab, and keep refreshing them

8:53 AM
no, it is more difficult to watch 1-5 in separate tabs than in a summarized and filtered tab.

Well, you can always have a userscript :)

no, I would like to have an option to hide/show them.
was there a feature request for this before?
although it would probably rare, so it is likely not worth the hassle.

No such option and no such feature request just yet.... feel free to start one but don't expect it to be very popular

I will not because it is too rare a request, I would think.

Q: Review numbers in the top bar on the right

Laszlo PappI have just noticed it this morning that there is a new number available between the bronze edge number and the review word in the top bar on the right, just on the left on the search field. Is this a recent addition because I have not seen it like that before? It is coming up in an orange color...

does anyone know how often it is refreshed?
@ShadowWizard: there is no harm apparently, meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/131795/…

Cool, didn't notice this one. Oded rulz!
As for suggested edits count I don't think it's cached but rather with so many users reviewing suggested edits, you're just not quick enough

it is cached as they write.

5 hours later…
1:52 PM
@ShadowWizard: I really do not understand your position. You do not want to get a handy feature in, nor do you take over the extra work needed. It is really a bizarr position.
so in essence, you are telling the end users "You must be happy to do the extra work".
that is everything, but end-user oriented, and it is sad to see it as a stance

If you talk about this I just disagree with your feature request
I didn't even downvote as it's downvoted enough already, but I really don't think we need it

The only thing I understand is your negativity, but I really do not understand why you want more work for end users.
who cares about downvotes.

I see the suggested tags as a bonus, nothing more

for me, discussing a feature is lotta more important than crappy downvotes.

Sometimes it works and suggest good tags and sometimes it doesn't... end of story. Really no big deal.
I was trying to explain from the programmer's point of view, guess it better come from the actual SE dev team so sorry about that. :)

1:55 PM
I do not enjoy this conversation, mostly because you seem to be a blocker for making end users' life simpler. That is a so totally wrong and fundamentally broken approach in my opinion that I am annoyed. That is a clear sign of closing the topic.

If you can catch balpha or Nick here ask them to take a look in your feature request, I'm done and sorry to upset you.
Going to delete my comments as you totally missed my point there.

I am happy to discuss topics, and people proving me wrong, and showing a better way, but clearly, here, no one provided anything better than me so far. Yes, suggesting +1 is not good because it is not +10 is not helpful. My suggestion would definitely make the end user's life better, even if just a bit step by step.
