@ShadowTheSpringWizard there's no built-in support for that
@ShadowTheSpringWizard correct, that's fine

2:01 AM
Stackoverflow is always busy. everything i got to filter questions from stackexchange.com 99% of the time its from stackoverflow. looks like they aren't going out of business anytime soon

2:17 AM
@Starshipisgoforlaunch You can change your username to indicate that you're on strike, use your "About me" to express yourself, post questions and/or answers on the main site to get your username noticed.

@BigJoe By some reports, SO seeing a large dip in traffic is why they are freaking out

3:54 AM
[dropping in to say that I've signed the open letter in spirit but not on "paper" (pixels?) since I refuse to make an SO account]

@JourneymanGeek I've seen lots of videos of SO mistreating n00bs that just sign up. its very hostile. meta is very nice. just do your research then ask your question.

4:21 AM
@BigJoe lots of . . . Videos? People actually post videos of their SO posts on YouTube or something?

@M.A.R. yea i don't know if they are satire or whatever but yea. look up stack overflow on youtube and you will see some. they are from programmers

Cripes
Half of the internet is redundant

@bobble I don’t think you need an SO account. Your SE account should suffice. If not, please bring it to the attention under the MSE post, and stress the importance of having it fixed.

@Andreasdetestscensorship Clicking to sign redirects me to create an SO account, so yes, SO is required
And which MSE post? There are many

Strike-Bobble!
LET'S GO

5:42 AM
I forgot to mention when Philippe was hired, but back when he was employed at the Wikimedia Foundation he was involved in a controversy where the organization enforced the opposite consensus to a request for comment, breaking with its charter that it serve the community.
4
In summary: the community came to a consensus that a certain beta feature should be disabled. WMF didn't participate in the discussion, but after it was closed with that consensus, responded with a "recommendation" that it continue to be enabled. A volunteer administrator then edited an interface page to disable the feature.
(The response was from a different staff member, not Philippe)
This identical situation occurred on both the English and German Wikipedias. Both interface page edits were reverted by staff and both administrators were threatened with having their admin rights revoked as a "WMF action" - at that point, the only written reason for having admin rights revoked by the WMF was in cases where it would put them at legal risk.
In the German Wikipedia case, this went a step further - the WMF immediately pushed a code change allowing for a protection level ("superprotect") that only allowed staff to edit pages, then immediately used it on the interface page in question.
Relevant pages:
Case opened on 03:26, 18 July 2014 (UTC) Case Suspended by motion on 23:56, 31 August 2014 (UTC) Case closed on 00:16, 5 November 2014 (UTC) Do not edit this page unless you are an arbitrator or clerk, or you are adding yourself as a party to this case. Statements on this page are copies of the statements submitted in the original request to arbitrate this dispute, and serve as verbatim copies; therefore, they may not be edited or removed. (However, lengthy statements may be truncated – in which case the full statement will be copied to the talk page. Statements by uninvolved editors during the...
While I respect all that the WMF has done, there are points of friction between the Foundation and the community. The essay will show why I am, or was, against superprotect. == "Reserve powers" of the Foundation == "Limits to configuration changes" states that: Rarely, a local community consensus will emerge for a particular wiki configuration change that is technically feasible to implement, but is rejected by the [WMF's] system administrators. Arguably this is a demonstration of a technocracy, or a necessity to preserve the founding principles and our mission. The WMF has used the "reserve...
> On August 10, 2014, a group of German Wikipedia administrators attempted to disable MediaViewer on the German Wikipedia as per a community poll. However, the WMF exercised its "reserve powers" and did not approve the change. The German Wikipedia administrators then edited the local MediaWiki page to force through the change, but they were reverted by Foundation staff and warned. However, the admins persisted with making the changes. The WMF then applied what is known as "superprotect" to the page, which means only Foundation staff can edit it.

6:32 AM
A case from nine years ago isn't necessarily relevant today; people do learn from their (and others') mistakes and improve.
We're not here to dig up dirt on Philippe or any other employee. Our goal is to stop the harm to our sites and communities.
2

@Mithical Sorry if I wasn't clear. The point I was trying to make was that Philippe has direct experience with this type of situation, so it remains an open question as to why he's not employing it here. Also, a quick click of the pages here would reveal that he wasn't involved directly in those cases.
3
Also, another point is that SE can learn from how the WMF cleaned up their actions. Especially the part where they undeployed the superprotect feature even though they never actually used it later on.

6:52 AM
@ElementsinSpace oh hey I can use a new word I learned

@starball epizeuxis epizeuxis epizeuxis?

@ElementsinSpace yes yes yes

7:38 AM
@Mithical Suggestion: change the title to "Stack Overflow Co.". This way, it's obvious to others that you deliberately wrote the company name that way and it's not a mis-name. I was about to edit it until I read your footnote 1.

This has been debated for around a week at this point. I left the title to match what's written in the letter.

@Mithical If it was in private moderator space, I wasn't aware of it. Did "Stack Overflow Co." come up in the discussion at any point, or was it solely a discussion between "Stack Exchange, Inc.", "Stack Overflow", and the current name?

There were a few options discussed, including "Stack Overflow LTD". A poll resulted in "Stack Overflow, Inc." being chosen.
It wasn't only in mod spaces, it was primarily on Discord.

@MetaAndrewT. joining you folks. I see spam, but I won't flag or delete.
@ShadowTheSpringWizard you meant "don't post guidance comments". "Feedback" comments about how we feel should still be left on that "announcement" post....

8:08 AM
@SPArcheon correct.

BTW, at the cost of looking really harsh, I would suggest that the ones running Smoke Detector should consider joining in and shutting down that service too.

@SPArcheon eh, it was already done.
Would be even better if any command would result in "I'm on a strike, you're welcome to join too" with a link. lol
!!/strike
R.I.P

@ShadowTheSpringWizard oh, I saw the latest reports and I assumed it was still running. Good to know it is not the case.

13 hours ago, by Mithical
@RocketNikita 04:01 UTC
@SPArcheon all before the above time ^

Maybe some will get the reference.

1 hour later…
9:19 AM
Signed the open letter yesterday evening to participate in the strike. First thing I do when I wake up is go through Review Queues.. Old habits. I hope my co-signers can forgive me my transgressions.

9:49 AM
@rene gone

Another small nail in the communication coffin: devops.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/393/…
They don't even say when sponsorship happens. lol
"bug". yeah right.
And they don't even use the correct name.
meh, that one is minor.

@ShadowTheSpringWizard the more I see, the more I wonder if there is a way to let the big spammers communities know that now is the best time to spam the site.

@SPArcheon probably there is
Go to dark web, search "spammers".

@ShadowTheSpringWizard just ask forest :P

@forest isn't pingable :(
But I can ask @Spe ;)

10:22 AM
@ShadowTheSpringWizard In the meantime, Stack managed to get me to change my avatar to something non-pony.

@SPArcheon umm...
But still anime, so same realm of avatars as pony. ;)

cropped pictures, either the site is hallucinating or the bigger version was inappropriate.
@ShadowTheSpringWizard that said, since you pointed out this...
nope, apparently the original is just Nahida looking at Lumine and Collei.
@ShadowTheSpringWizard Therefore I would argue that your influence is spreading to search engines too.

@SPArcheon :P
Well need to register to that site to see full image, so I pass. Probably fake indeed.
Pity Google index crap instead of actual sources.
@Mithical how is the list of signers sorted in the open letter page? Couldn't find any logic there.

10:42 AM
@ShadowTheSpringWizard user ID?

@ShadowTheSpringWizard It seems to keep the diamonds at the top, but otherwise re-sort upon every refresh.

@SPArcheon nope
@ElementsinSpace pity, it's what SE using and I don't like it. meh

@ShadowTheSpringWizard SQL Server unspecified sorting?

(random, change on each refresh.)
@SPArcheon oh, Microsoft, so make sense. Still, sort is one liner, so weird they didn't think of it.
going to open letter meta

@ShadowTheSpringWizard mods > former mods > users, randomized within each group

10:47 AM
@Mithical why random? Can't see any value having no sorting.
Thought it's sorted by join date, would make most sense.
(so I can see latest joiners easily)
Also, guess no active staff member is there?

@ShadowTheSpringWizard yep, wonder why...

f a staff member signed they would be fired @ShadowTheSpringWizard

either that. but in general, staff doesn't do moderation on SE sites

staff do some, and they do all of it on PLDI ( a private beta site) @MetaAndrewT.
but remmeber the strike includes nonmods

@Starshipisgoforlaunch Fantastic way to resign though

10:59 AM
@Starshipisgoforlaunch not if it's the CEO. ;-)
Can be really brave of him. :D
@MetaAndrewT. they can cease to manage.
@mousetail active staff should have two diamonds.
Or a pitchfork.
haha good old times.

@ShadowTheSpringWizard Don't only community managers get 2 diamonds?

@mousetail only one more and they will be able to craft a single pickaxe.

Where on the network to get 2 sticks though?

11:16 AM
@mousetail make the handle out of diamonds

@mousetail recent events show that if you wait long enough the company will surely provide you with those. ¯_('^')_/¯

you'll then get... axed?

@mousetail 180 diamonds actually
devs get only on demand
@balpha even didn't get one here for long time lol
@SPArcheon one stick for each side?
@MetaAndrewT. sticked

stacked!?

@mousetail they get the full set

11:26 AM
@SPArcheon Not enough NSFW. Go all in, or revert back to the ponies. >:(

I really think a chaos type team would be a good idea but I also have been saying this for years

@ShadowTheSpringWizard there were supply chain issues at our diamond factory

@Starshipisgoforlaunch Who?

> Hit by two sticks by a Stack Exchange senior employee
@JourneymanGeek can't have good things
@Andreasdetestscensorship any staff member
@balpha just because it's on the moon? pfft.
:D

> Please add an option to indicate that someone supports removing the policy but doesn't want to participate in the strike. I'd like to sign the letter but due to its current phrasing it would state that I'm participating.

11:31 AM
@Andreasdetestscensorship see the uncropped version of the picture I posted just after that.
It is Shadow search engine hallucinating.

@SPArcheon Exactly. Need more NSFW these days.

@Andreasdetestscensorship first....

@SPArcheon we take Manhattan?
@SPArcheon oh hey, I have a competitor!

second, you both are giving too much importance to the picture and too little to the sign that comes with that.

@Andreasdetestscensorship put another mirror in the toilet room. :P
@SPArcheon maybe because we don't know there should be a sign. ;)

11:42 AM
@ShadowTheSpringWizard signature, profile, about me, call it as you wish.

@SPArcheon huh? Sign a ture? Sign a tour? I miss something here.

@ShadowTheSpringWizard Not my kind of NSFW.

12:01 PM
@Andreasdetestscensorship so in other room, whichever room that floats your ship. :D

@ShadowTheSpringWizard the CEO is a well known insane person, he just wants money

@Starshipisgoforlaunch nah

@Andreasdetestscensorship from Ghandi "be the change that you wish to see in the world". If you want a change, help make it

Two main options as I see it: either he's really disconnected from the reality, or he's well aware but his hands are tied by the Board.
If the second option, signing the letter is a great way to take a stand against the stock holders, aka Board.

@Andreasdetestscensorship what?
@ShadowTheSpringWizard yeah
I think the first

12:04 PM
maybe, time will tell.

the board is probably smart enough to know that in ordfer to run a community made volunteer website you need a community

@Starshipisgoforlaunch actually, no.

@Starshipisgoforlaunch Lmao

@mousetail Any chance of putting a link to the MSE post in the letter?

They see only numbers.

12:06 PM
is there a met apost for every stack

@Starshipisgoforlaunch Be careful calling people insane. That's not friendly and usually flag-worthy.
4

@Starshipisgoforlaunch no.

You can call the company whatever you want, but don't go calling people things.

@Mast I'm on a strike, so not flagging. ;)

@Andreasdetestscensorship wasn't the decision to leave it from the letter because it's for public facing?

12:11 PM
@MetaAndrewT. where this decision was discussed and made? Discord?

@Andreasdetestscensorship Discuss this with the mods on discord, the letter content itself is not my reponsibility

Talk to the mouse then? ;)

What just happened the letter? Now it say everyone signed on the 5th. But I signed on the 4th.

Most of the strike is organized on Discord.

@ElementsinSpace Everyone who signed before the letter was officially published has had their date changed to when the letter was posted

12:13 PM
@mousetail that's bad
I consider it a bug, but meh... won't fight over it.

The mods wanted that

@ElementsinSpace Archive is your friend (link)

Another decision made on Discord, to just wipe all dates. hehe.

I still have the original dates stored just not displayed

@mousetail Some did.

12:14 PM
@Mast one is enough.

The process is a lot of 'good enough'.

@mousetail Yeah, fine.

In the USA, enough that one parent ask to ban a book and bang, book is banned from school.

We're striking, not writing the Bill of Rights.

currently 62 striking mods

12:15 PM
I was told it was decided but I'm not in their chat room so I have no idea what was discussed

@Starshipisgoforlaunch Your count is off.

what do you think it is then? @Mast

@Starshipisgoforlaunch 74

@mousetail you're fine, I don't like the way it's "managed", but on the other hand, I can just join that Discord and not doing it.

12:17 PM
@Mast yup, just count the diamonds, and remove one.

@ShadowTheSpringWizard Remove 1? Who gave up theirs meanwhile? Massimo is already counted as ex-.

@Mast lol no, I mean there's a diamond in the text as well:
> If you're a moderator or employee, your signature will have a ♦ shown next to it automatically
So when counting by CTRL+F, need to exclude it.

Ah.

I just multiply rows and columns, add the remainder.
But maybe I'm getting old.

12:21 PM
Or you can just use the bot

Bot can be behind, but is overall more than good enough.

@ShadowTheSpringWizard Discord.

The signature monitor

ohh
Don't want a bot behind me. Too risky.
:D

12:23 PM

oh, guess what...

Updates every hour or so.

Censorship, what surprise....

Used to be every 5m, but that got old very quickly.

@SPArcheon where?

12:24 PM
Would be a pity if someone posted a picture right?
Poor company attempts to hide everything under the rug...

Something got deleted? @SPA

@SPArcheon other than unfeaturing?

It became a hot meta post at basically the same time lol

12:27 PM
It's funny how edits do that...

@SPArcheon we have been told to not featuring anything related to strikes

lol

@MetaAndrewT. which is actually fair, censorship would be to delete it.
(or not allow it at all in the first place.)

If they forcibly remove it from HMQs I'd be upset though
3

@mousetail yeah

12:30 PM
Just wondering. Does skipping a review have any impact at all on the system?

@SPArcheon think it has, but only when you skip a lot.

Keeping it open for will do more I think, it reserves the task for a few minutes
If you skip every 5 minutes then you can keep a single tasks hostage without contributing anything

I'm fine with striking, I'm not fine with active sabotage like that.

hmm anyone else got logged out?

It's not really viable anyway, a lot of effort for very little harm

12:33 PM
@Tinkeringbell oh, if that's the goal of skipping, I agree.
Vandalism during strike is bad.

@mousetail I wasn't thinking of a way to steal resources. I was thinking of a way to actually empty the queue without doing any work at all.

@SPArcheon you'll "empty" your own queue, yes.

That would be bad yes, throwing away the work of people genuinely trying to help

And I was wrong, it has no penalty even if you skip a lot, maybe I remember something from the past.
16
A: Is it bad to skip a lot of suggested edits?

Anne Daunted GoFundMonica Is it bad to skip a lot of suggested edits? No, it's perfectly fine to do so. Better to skip a post in the review queue than to approve a bad suggested edit / reject a good one. Just review the ones you feel confident about. Or is it considered bad and does the system penalise this? ...

@SPArcheon That's vandalism too. Even if it would work (it won't), it's up to any user individually if they want to strike, but not for a few users to go 'enforce' a strike on others.

12:35 PM
@Tinkeringbell skipping does not in any way affect the review item for other users.
But it does mean the one skipping will not see the item again.

@ShadowTheSpringWizard Thankfully not. Would be bad if the system allowed for a few bad actors to undermine it like that.

yep
!!/bonfire @g3r
:(

:(
I can't decide if it's harder to see the situation from the outside or from inside

@g3rv4 Personally, I always find it sucks more if you know something but can't share it, and just have to see everyone else get it wrong. So I'd pick inside for you :P

@g3rv4 hi! You're the first active staff I see who even comment on the situation.

12:42 PM
@Tinkeringbell tbh, last time it happened I didn't know anything...
@ShadowTheSpringWizard heh, I'm not active staff :P that's probably why

@g3rv4 and now... you know? ;)
@g3rv4 oh wait

@g3rv4 Ah. Ignorance can be bliss, true :)

Forgot you're not staff now lol

But if you're not 'inside' the group that knows, are you really seeing something from the inside? ;)

ditching useless @g3r in an alley
:P

12:42 PM
@ShadowTheSpringWizard right :) now I know I can't say anything I shouldn't, because the whole situation unfolded with me having access only to public information :)
@ShadowTheSpringWizard lol not that I've been very useful in the past :P

@g3rv4 you were small part in a big system operated by small parts.
Without small parts, no big system.
Hence, you are important. :D

@Tinkeringbell it's kind of... you're inside the building, and if you say anything wrong, you risk being fired (even if you know nothing)

@Mithical just to confirm if I am (hopefully) missing out something. All the mods on the letters have the diamond, right? So, only the names there actually joined (or at least, joined officially)?

@ShadowTheSpringWizard nah @g3rv4 was a pretty big part

@g3rv4 That sucks. Work from home? :P

12:44 PM
We miss him ☹️

@Tinkeringbell :P
@balpha <3

@balpha how big? grabs popcorn

@ShadowTheSpringWizard 2 meters

O_o
hulkv4
@SPArcheon names can be anything

@SPArcheon Only the mods who appear on the list have committed to striking. The diamond is added automatically when they sign, so any person with a full diamond is confirmed to be a current mod.

12:47 PM
@ShadowTheSpringWizard yeh, that is kinda useless if it was meant for anonymity, the profile is linked

There's no point in striking anonymously.

@Mast trust me: if you are an employee there might.

@Mithical Unless they resigned in between signing and now

you don't want to be part of the next workforce cut

@SPArcheon This strike is by mods, not employees.
I'd advice employees against signing the letter.
Unless they got an anonymous sock they're willing to sign with.

12:51 PM
@Mast tecnicaly signing the letter is open to everyone, but I would not put it past the company to try to cross reference who signed it by looking at the oauth requests that page has to make in order to work
The page request you to input a name instead of using your actual one.

Some of the people who have signed may be less sincere in their approach than others. We can not exclude it's signed by socks. Mods do not look at PII while on strike, so only non-striking mods could check if they suspect foul play. Not that they should...

you may note that someone signed as
> A supporting user appreciative of the high quality work from the moderators

@SPArcheon That's in part because some users have different names across the network.
@SPArcheon I did.

@SPArcheon This is semi-purposeful, it allows the company to verify the legitimacy of the letter

You may also note one of SE's famous trolls signed.
There will be some noise. That's not unexpected.
@SPArcheon I did notice.
> "you may note that someone signed as"

oh, that you meant.
Well, if you notice the signature is linked to the user profile on Stack, so maybe it would be easier to not give the users the idea that they are anonymous

Where does it give users the idea that it would've been anonymous?
They are request to sign, after all.

> Display name*
Please enter your name as you wish it to appear in your signature. This will be public.

Yes. That's correct.

but I am just nitpicking, nothing more.

12:58 PM
Nowhere does it state that your account would not be shown.
Maybe it could've been more explicit about that.
Ask mouse.

not a real problem.
Like I said, even if the signatures were a bunch of "user #" Stack would still be able to see who is who since the page makes a request to Stack to authenticate the user

@SPArcheon Not everyone on the SE network has the technical knowledge to infer this.

@Andreasdetestscensorship Can't chat on SO, but saw those revisions being talked about before. Note that rev 3 for a tiny bit was just re-adding the feature tag (and not editing the title) and saying that the removal was by mistake (can't remember if there was a 'sorry' there). But the title edit probably overrode that edit summary.
(so the re-featuring and the title edit were two different steps there. Not sure which one causes the most problems though :P)

@Andreasdetestscensorship ? why "everyone"? I could not care the less. What I said is that even if the names were anonymous if company wanted to know they have the way to.

1:17 PM
@SPArcheon it's for those with several names, or long names like me who prefer something shorter.
@SPArcheon easy, sock account.
@Mast Shog? ;)

@Mast KP isn't that famous... Just persistent

fun fact: company is quite desperate on decreasing visibility of the strike by removing the "featured" tag.
In the meantime, someone should tell them that on SO the meta post about the ban of ChatGPT is still featured, despite probably being no longer true after the AI edict.
if you at least wanted clarity you should mark that as obsolete and point out to the new (imposed) guidance. But I guess that everything being as clear as waste water in a star-less night helps in making the mods look like a bunch of fool who misinterpreted the company guidance

in The Ministry of Silly Hats on Stack Overflow Chat, 15 mins ago, by tripleee
could we feature one about "SE staff is unfeaturing [featured] posts across the network"?
Relevant to the conversation here, it seems.

@SPArcheon they disallow only featuring strike posts.
@Andreasdetestscensorship good way to lose diamond lol

As I've said there:
in The Ministry of Silly Hats on Stack Overflow Chat, 1 min ago, by Mast
It haven't been that many yet. I checked.

1:28 PM
@ShadowTheSpringWizard Then we make a new Meta post: SE is firing moderators working in the interest of the community.

Let's see how many people sign first. There are some signs SE has gotten the message.

@Andreasdetestscensorship haha, oil to the fire.
@Mast hmm? Which signs?
looking at the sky
seeing a flying cow

@ShadowTheSpringWizard the post was feature BEFORE the edict came about.
at the time, the SO community represented by its mod still had the authority to choose what to do with AI generated content. The company has now revoked that privilege and forced a policy that - from my outsider understanding (since we are not graced enough to know what they actually told mods) no longer prohibits AI generation.
So, the company new policy overwrote the SO community one. That post is now invalid since the company one-sided took the decision from the users and reversed what they agreed on before.
Yet the post is still featured.

Finally name changed!
@SPArcheon this was also said back in Monica case, pretty sure about it.

One would expect that since the CEO himself is running around removing featured post they could spare two seconds correcting info they made wrong and can cause further confusion. Instead, they are focused on making the strike less visible.

1:38 PM
@SPArcheon slightly incorrect. what is banned is using AI-detector++, but no change in AI-generated content

@MetaAndrewT. It also bans any manual techniques like writing style

@SPArcheon also, no. Philippe is not the CEO...

@MetaAndrewT. lol. So they allow deleting AI content, but forbid any possible way to detect it. The final result is they allow AI content and don't have what it takes to say it directly.
You have some bad policy? Go ahead and say it, don't manipulate the users.
That's super annoying.
@MetaAndrewT. yet ;)
Well he's second in command, close enough IMO.

@MetaAndrewT. Excuse me, didn't they request to not ban ai generated content because a) "there is no way to detect it" and b) it is not 100% that it is wrong?

If someone admits their post was written by AI, mods are allowed to delete it based on that.

1:44 PM
^
It's hard for me to comment because I can't remember which one is still private and which one is already public.

striking @M.A.R

Yes, I am a striking individual

@ShadowTheSpringWizard okay Marx
hums "Which side are you on?"

Hello Meta friends, been a while
In the midst of exams, yay

2:05 PM
> What a
horrible
day to

If burnt tire smell isn't your thing you may want to avoid looking at Meta right now.

Oh dear
Oh well, I don’t do much except lurk in chat anyway

@EleezatheOtherWorldWizard What subject do you have exams for?

@ElementsinSpace Maths, Physics, Computer Science

in The Ministry of Silly Hats on Stack Overflow Chat, 6 mins ago, by Zoe stands with Ukraine
(First?) article has gone live, including a bullshit statement from the CEO

@EleezatheOtherWorldWizard I've studied all those at Uni. I didn't do particularly well (because they are hard), but they are great subjects.

2:20 PM
Yeah, I'm trying to get into university to do computer science but exams are Very Difficult

I was doing a degree in nuclear science. Turns out: it's not so easy.

2:42 PM
oh wonderful.
