For questions, should I edit and vote to close at the same time?
are we closing those?
2:11 AM
There isn't that much to flag on productivity SE, because it lacks
Or lacked... until it was closed in on March 6 of 2018.
Real taverners know the closing dates of obscure failed SE sites.
Freelancing still exists and even got two questions so far in May.

@SonictheSaveUkraine-hog hooray!
For such a rare occasion in recent period, looks like Ethereum.SE won...
Q: Custom Ethereum design and logo - Information gathering

PiperCongratulations Ethereum community! We’re going to be creating a custom site design for you that we hope will represent your subject and we want you all to really love it. You’ve been waiting almost 5 years and we really want to do this well. To facilitate this, we’re reaching out now to ask you ...

I was sure SE dropped the idea of custom designs. What changed?
5:57 AM
The self-confident after the April Fool's The Filters™?
It's a pain in their [blip] as it makes doing global changes harder, like dark theme. So I even got to accept them not adding new custom designs.
Oh well, maybe Smokey can help.
!!/design MSE
@ShadowWizardSaysNoMoreWar No such command 'design'.
Looks like they already limited the scope of the customization
> We'll be able to create a logo, background colors, and textures in addition to your logo - but please don't expect illustrations like what you may have seen on some of the older site designs.
Q: Why don't newly-designed sites get custom 404, 500, or captcha images anymore?

Sonic the Save Ukraine-hogBy "error images" below, I mean the images used on each site for the 404 Not Found page, the 500 server error page, and the captcha page. I'll admit that I'm a bit biased as I strongly believe that each site should have its own, unique set of error images, as they add a certain level of charm to ...

Never got an answer as to why
6:07 AM
Because it doesn't look so Stacks™ :/
> I personally created the Frisa Lank theme
Kudos for creating the perfect alternative theme that's actually readable
Yep, I agree very much.
One more point:
> We got into a situation where several sites were in queue for graduation but the designer didn't have the bandwidth to actually create the designs.
Said designer was removed as part of the November 2017 mass layoff.
6:21 AM
Also, in car news: the old, practical car I've talked about a few times here finally met its end today
Took it to the mechanic and they say the engine is damaged beyond repair. $5000 to replace the engine.
Apparently it was suffering a coolant leak for a while, which never really manifested into any visible issue until very recently
oh it was actually reported above, but still up
6:56 AM
@tripleee not anymore
7:56 AM
the first wizolio one above is still up, any new flaggers ready? ^^

@tripleee theres a phone number in that post above, but Smokey didn't catch it
thanks for the ping, watched now

can't see the original of https://superuser.com/questions/1721968 (not enough rep), anyone able to fetch a screen shot or copy/paste of the edit history?
you wanna ask journey or david
yeh, hesitant to ping anyone in particular as I imagine there will be more people with privs on SU
the "new business" one on Freelancing is still up
@ShadowWizardSaysNoMoreWar gone
@Luuklag gone
12:08 PM
Y'all - if you have questions about the site design stuff, feel free to ask here on MSE but I'd really rather you weren't leaving semi-hostile comments on the individual site posts.
12:19 PM
@JNat thanks!
@Catija Ugh, we having people being nasty still? ._.
There'll always be people behaving nastily, it's part of the deal...
@Luuklag i.stack.imgur.com/xU9fu.png there you go
@ShadowWizardSaysNoMoreWar ehh, not really "part of the deal"
12:22 PM
Some listen to warnings, some don't.
There's a kind of a fragile balance here.
@SonictheSaveUkraine-hog but it's not her fault that happened - it's not really helpful at this point to make that a point in the design process. We're creating site designs now - maybe focus on that?
We're creating site designs?
@JourneymanGeek of being a mod, there's constant stream of new users, naturally some would be nasty at some point. You can suspend, but more will come.
@ShadowWizardSaysNoMoreWar Well - not all people who are nasty are new
and people pick up from what they see
12:24 PM
@JourneymanGeek yeah there was link here earlier today.
@JourneymanGeek like kids! Nice. ;)
I'm apparently completely out of the loop, though I plead working the night shift and general work burnout :D
@JourneymanGeek took me by surprise too, was sure custom designs are dead and buried.
@JourneymanGeek Sonic is quoting a question about a new site design from one of the designers - hint. There's currently seven of them and I wrote the post because I'm the one supporting the project.
@Catija Gimme a sec, let me get caught up
snatching @Journeyman's second mid-air
12:26 PM
@ShadowWizardSaysNoMoreWar I'm slightly less pessimistic but thought it was further down the line
@Catija I mean, this is a very positive thing but I didn't know this :D
@ShadowWizardSaysNoMoreWar In theory I could suspend them all, but I'd be running through keyboards like no one's business...
But the broader issue is a mix of a sense of entitlement (and admittedly SE's kinda not lived up to expectations in the past) and a certain disconnect between the folks building things, and the folks using it (work in progress fixing?)
@tripleee ^^^
@Catija Are you referring to mine?
12:50 PM
@Catija >_> done :D
@JourneymanGeek arg you beat me to it.
you might want to fix your spelling of ethereum though
You snooze... well I did a little snoozing ...
grumbles, crypto
And bitcoin is also getting a design right now
12:53 PM
I kept it generic, basically cause I've not actually caught up on this
I also wonder how this would affect reputation levels since I remember Design independant graduated sites maintained beta rep levels
Bitcoin still has beta rep levels
@Mithical Yay for questions written half asleep ._.
Apparently you can be the fastest gun in the west, and put holes everywhere but the other guy too ._.
!!/coffee JourneymanGeek
@Mithical brews a cup of espresso for @JourneymanGeek
12:57 PM
Not a replacement for sleep ._.
@Mithical I got about 3 hours
@JourneymanGeek It doesn't
@Catija which might be something else sites may be interested in requesting ._.
@JourneymanGeek I assume they can just request that on their per site meta and tag it status-review?
1:07 PM
@Luuklag The layoffs really don't have anything to do with it - we revamped the entire layout of the network in 2018, which included having to redesign a bunch of sites, we also have actually created a handful of site designs since then (Code Golf and Anime at least)... the difference is that we now specifically have staff who have dedicated time to pick up where we left off.
Maybe! If its a doable thing
@Catija Then I stand corrected
But I guess I don't really think it's fair to ask a designer to answer for the layoffs in 2017 - I understand that's maybe not your intention but... it feels like a really pointed and direct comment that's kinda... I don't know. My point is, you can ask the question "are all of the sites that don't have designs going to get one?" without being so upfront about the layoff stuff. :)
Well yeah, I just didn't recall any sites getting a design after the layoffs, so that was my point of reference.
Ah. Cool. :)
There's been a few attempts to get back to the themes over the years but we just haven't had the staffing to do it, particularly not to the scale that the backlog indicates. That's what happened with Code Golf (which went pretty well) and Anime (which ended up having to get farmed out to a contractor)... and I think they got stymied again at that point... Honestly, I think Philippe's put in a lot of work to get this moving again. :)
While I get to be the one supporting it, he was the person figuring out how to get time from the design team for it. :D
Hiya Jeremy :D
1:20 PM
@Catija having a network wide suspension doesn't block you from chat?
@Catija well that's great. Good to see those hard working former beta sites get some much deserved designs
It blocks you from talking here but not from reading. :) I haven't seen him around in a while, so I just wanted to say hi. :)
Ah so the ban at least has a point xD
And apparently a ban doesn't stop you from joining a collective. Is that intentional, or just an oversight
Not that I see many avenues for abuse there
@JourneymanGeek oh, I see. Well, I'm glad they made the line shorter. :)
@JourneymanGeek and risk actual mutiny/exodus, yeah. If you take extreme measures, must do it in a very accurate way.
@Luuklag Not sure. I don't think it can do much damage (as you say).
I was once one of those who post such semi-hostile comments, and stopped. Two reasons: 1) It serve no real purpose, and 2) I got official warning.
1:26 PM
@ShadowWizardSaysNoMoreWar Meh :D
@ShadowWizardSaysNoMoreWar and while it sometimes temporarily makes you feel better, there's no real point
Is it public public information why Jeremy is network-banned? If so, why?
So in my case, warning was enough to make me see reason #1 ;)
@nobody No
@ShadowWizardSaysNoMoreWar there's a lot about SE that... annoys me, but its always worth thinking of the bigger picture and what you want to achieve
else you'll be that annoying snipey bitter person no one likes :D
@nobody well he went "nuts" here several times over animal rights stuff. But dunno other places and sites.
@JourneymanGeek it's like kicking a wall, yeah.
I don't think my toes would feel better after kicking a wall. :)
1:47 PM
Steel-toed boots :D
@Tinkeringbell That still hurts, it only prevents your toes from getting crushed
@Luuklag Okay, I don't know how hard you kick your walls but back when I had my own steel-toed boots, wall kicking wasn't painfull at all (and a great outlet!)
@Tinkeringbell probably harder then you did then xD
I don't need to kick a wall to hurt my toes ._.
Oh no, there are plenty of ways to hurt toes. Furniture, or doors....
(power) tools
1:52 PM
You watched help, mijn man is klusser?
@JourneymanGeek yeah, any furniture is enough. ;)
@rene Don't need to, I know a guy....
LOL ... oh boy ...
Haha, I can always laugh so hard at those utter failures
It isn't all that difficult people
2:03 PM
@Luuklag Well I am the guy... I'm horrible at anything DIY. I can do crochet, or embroidery, or all those finer crafts... but give me some wood, a hammer, nails and a saw, and whatever I manage to make is horrible XD
@Tinkeringbell as long as it's not a trip to the ER you'll be fine xD
I haven't managed that yet. But I also haven't been given that many chances XD
2:41 PM
@Tinkeringbell This happens amazingly often with my RA folks
one guy crushed 2 fingers fixing a bike, another one had a minor saw accident...
It's almost as if they're guys ;)
3:24 PM
Hi. Just sharing this here for use next year. I am sure the community would totally love this, right?
discovered this weird service dogr.io
notice how an image can be generated from text...
I will just post this one image...
Catija, you know what to do next April...
3:40 PM
It's a pity the parsing errors out so easily.
Could have been used for Smokey too...
So compact and easy to read. You should totally do this :P
I don't understand?
it's a toilet
it's a doge
@Catija was suggesting this as next year April fool
using a generated image so that users can't simply block the background and remove the dog

@MetaAndrewT. apparently I was too quick to mention this since the Ethereum.SE meta post was the newest among network-wide meta posts at the time I posted this. Apologize for being possibly misleading... (the earliest was German.SE)
6:48 PM
Ethereum has the highest-traffic among non-designed sites (15K visits/day). German has 1.7
Sciences, ranked by SE popularity (traffic in kilovisits per day):
1. Mathematics 122 (+10 from MathOverflow)
2. Statistics 58
3. Physics 25
4. Chemistry 6
5. Computer Science 5 (+0.7 from TCS)
Then a steep dropoff to Astronomy, Biology, Economics, Earth... each with about 1 or less.

However, in terms of most popular majors (USA), Psychology is huge and Math/Physics are some roundoff errors. nces.ed.gov/fastfacts/display.asp?id=37

@Glorfindel Absolutely agree with the closure and deletion, but the comment here is incorrect.
@VoteDukakis ouch, 1.7 visits/day

@SPArcheon maybe a good meme though, this was getting old by the third picture you uploaded.
I'm at a loss myself
@MetaAndrewT. coin?
@VoteDukakis well, people would do a lot to have chance to become rich. And virtual coins that are actual money sounds to many like easy gain, so they try to learn how to get it.
Most fail, naturally, and thus empower the machine.
It's one gigantic pyramid, now way too late to stop it.
