@JourneymanGeek in Catija's Meta post about Glorfindel becoming a mod, she said there's a "dearth of work to do" for the mods. So why would a 4th mod be added, is it because you're becoming a CM? Meaning it will become 3 again?
@user1271772 no
@user1271772 I think SE's pretty much wanting someone in the US/Europe timezone for the immediate future
I saw something on Meta about you becoming a CM
I see
They turned me down about 4 times. :D
so the ball's entirely in their court at this point
But the last time was strictly due to time zone reasons right?
That's one thing that can't be changed
1:22 AM
Also I guess if you were to become a CM and we needed a replacement 3rd MSE mod, then having two in the Netherlands would not be so helpful from a time-zone standpoint, compared to getting someone else from Singapore vicinity.
So I suppose my theory that you were becoming a CM and they were getting another mod as a replacement, didn't make so much sense from a time zone perspective.
I'm waiting to see if they actually hire someone from the community TBH
@user1271772 well - there's the hypothesis. Firstly, we're building in redundancy, in case we have extra workload, before we need it
this is possible, either in good or bad ways, and this is kinda why we have/need an extra mod
@JourneymanGeek You don't need to wait to realize that the answer is no.
any member of the community
ANyway, if there's a crisis, we're in better shape to handle it
which is important
@user1271772 I don't think timezone was a particular critieria in being a MSE mod
besides everyone knows I keep strange hours
1:40 AM
@JourneymanGeek Why do you say that?
@forestdistrustsStackExchange experience mostly lol
During periods like this you'd find that the flag queue is small and most of what we do is gentle redirection.
Its also the worst time to get new mods :D
@JourneymanGeek Why the worst time?
Who would be dumb enough to want to be a mod when everything is on fire? :D
+ there's a per site learning curve
1:59 AM
@JourneymanGeek Everything is on fire?
Yes, that's one definition of a crisis :D
Yea but I didn't realize SE was in a crisis right now? I know there was one in 2019.
lol we're not
that's why its a good time to top up mods :D
2:15 AM
I see, I thought you said "It's also the worst time to get new mods" but that I suppose was not referring to now, it was referring to times when we're on fire.
But Catija's post made it seem like adding the extra mod was the CMs idea rather than yours, is it a correct interpretation?
2:31 AM
@user1271772 well we could have turned it down
But you liked the idea, I understand
3:16 AM
How do I embed a YouTube video in a question/answer?
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard FYI, both of those posts have now been deleted by a moderator, with rude/abusive flags (as well as my custom flags explaining them) marked helpful. I'm always happy to explain my reports if you have doubts about them, especially ones where I'm indicating it's a troll and thus might not put as much information in the report. Those two in particular were sockpuppets of a long-standing network troll who tends to frequent a few particular sites, Law among them.
Thing is, I can create a GIF and embed it, but I have to really cut down the color quality:
@forestdistrustsStackExchange it's enabled on some sites and impossible on others
(Not that GBA had particularly rich colors, but those trees are supposed to be green, not black)
@RyanM How do I tell?
also normal imgur has higher upload limits than stack.imgur, if that helps
3:28 AM
Oh, neato. Fitting that into 2 MiB was a pain.
20
A: Which sites have YouTube embedding on?

StevoisiakI've put together an incomplete list of sites based on manual testing and site-specific research. (Essentially, searching posts from every site and running tests when necessary) The majority of the hyperlinks below point to relevant meta discussions about whether YouTube embedding should or shoul...

Thanks.
Hm, @RyanM that list doesn't include Retrocomputing.
But I guess embedding is off, since the bare URL doesn't expand into an embedded video.
(testing if it works in chat)
It does work in chat. Why don't all sites enable it? It's not like it's using SE's bandwidth.
Probably because most sites wouldn't appreciate it. It'd be a vector for spam and NAAs.
For instance, I'd be opposed to it being enabled on Stack Overflow. Very rarely do YouTube videos add to answers.
It could be useful for questions, but strictly speaking it's still an offsite link that might become deleted.
3:58 AM
@forestdistrustsStackExchange Its 'optional' but up to the specific sites to request enabling. We already have answers that are "watch this video" on SU so... ehhh
Make a great case for it on RC's meta :D

@EkadhSingh it became kind of meme here, yeah.
@GWarner true, someone with the power to unstar did it on their own. Cheers! :)
@forestdistrustsStackExchange it is using SE's bandwidth, in a way. Pretty sure that to enable embedding, extra JS code should be loaded. Even if only 1k, when it's millions of hits per day, it becomes meaningful.

@SmokeDetector from foreign spam to a more understandable spam
7:44 AM
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard I voted FP and can't see the post any longer; can you elaborate on what happened there?
@tripleee you can see the original post on Meta Smoke, it's linked in the report itself. The author edited during grace period so it's impossible to see on SE.
I can't see it now, but I'm pretty sure it was very spammy even after edit. No?
I know about metasmoke; my question is what happened after that
Unless they made third edit?
@tripleee what do you mean? After what?
It was an attempt at an answer, but with the same spam link in it
well a really long wall of text, probably copied from somewhere
@Luuklag sorry I lost you. We probably don't talk about same thing...
It's a question, not answer.
7:49 AM
comments in metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/post/312988 allege there was a grace period edit which turned it into "obvious spam"
Ah my bad.
@Luuklag yeah, with link to their site.
Too bad MS doesn't keep revisions too...
it can if you !!/rescan after the edit
@tripleee ohh that was @MetaAndrewT. mostly joking. The original is Chinese spam, after edit it became English spam so it was "more clear".
@tripleee but why did you mark it as false positive??
This I can't understand.

in Charcoal HQ on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 22 mins ago, by tripleee
@SmokeDetector TPU voters please review, machine translation looks to me like an honest attempt to discuss a news article about eye health issues related to children's use of mobile devices
also visible in MS
@tripleee meh, not going to use translators. And after edit it was still very spammy.
but no recollection as to what it actually said?
@tripleee It was really long, with the link that is listed in MS embedded somewhere in between.
I didn't read too deep. I saw lots of text, with link(s) to the same site as the original post linked to. On first glance, it looked like obvious attempt to promote that site.
I still think it's spam. You can disagree. All good!
I can agree if I see that it really was spam but in the absence of even anecdotal evidence to rebut the obvious alternative explanation (that they copied text out of the article) I can't
7:56 AM
If honest mistake, OP can try again this time asking in better way. But doubt it will happen.
yeah, thanks for the quick follow-up; let's leave it at that
Cheers!
Now going to make actual coffee. Cya!
I just realized: when Microsoft moved Edge to Chromium, they reinstated the feature to crash the browser with a specific URL, a feature that was last in Microsoft browsers in IE6.
in Charcoal HQ on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 54 secs ago, by tripleee
@Glorfindel with the recent one I think a pattern emerges
8:09 AM
IE6 contains a buffer overflow bug where typing ms-its:%F0: into the URL bar will crash it. Chromium-based browsers have a crash test URL, about:inducebrowsercrashforrealz, which is an intentional debugging feature.
@tripleee AFAIR, it's a long post that explains many things about eye health (like a PSA). Not sure if there's any question in the end, since I didn't scroll it until the end.
thanks, I concur now
:)
...and in the meanwhile, 125 new infected in Israel yesterday, some of them vaccinated. Not much, but it's only the beginning. :(
Well we had some fun.... guess very soon we'll be back to full lockdown and fifth wave.
I went to three restaurants and watched a movie in the cinema (WW84), so it's fine.
@MetaAndrewT. forget about eye health, it's about anti-aging (screenshot: i.sstatic.net/lonXq.png, thanks to browser's cache)

And as usual, the annoying part is that nobody is doing anything to stop it. Not the media, not the government.
@MetaAndrewT. huh! Pretty sure that's not what I saw, so spammer made several edits.

@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard Are they new variants? Or does nobody know? Most of our (UK) new cases (I think over 80%) are the Indian variant which has a higher infection rate. The good new is that folks who are vaccinated don't usually end up in hospital.
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard the chances of coming in contact with human feces are smaller. Fecal-oral transmission is not as difficult as you think
@M.A.R. Well washing your hands after going to the toilet (especially if it's not your toilet) with disinfectant soap will stop that. And before cooking. And after shopping. Wash you hands all the time!
9:47 AM
@DavidPostill I haven't been able to find anything about 'long covid' (hope it's called that everywhere, it's where people just never become normal again after an infection, even a small one) and vaccines though... and from what I read, most people that get long covid only had a mild case of covid... :|
Fingers crossed these vaccines help there too and that the Indian variant doesn't spread too far here (fat chance with all the lifting of restrictions)
long or lung Tink?
long :)
It's the name for a timespan (langdurig), not an organ ;)
I see that one also calls it PASC, which may be more familiar to others.
hopefully 'long covid' is not like "multiple covid variants merging into one'...
@DavidPostill new to Israel, it's the Indian variant, most likely. And yeah, no fatal cases so far but.... I remember how it started with the "vanilla" Covid.
@M.A.R. well, that's true.
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard a cat!!!
10:00 AM
Although we shouldn't be calling it the Indian variant anymore, but the Delta variant
@Luuklag Meh :P
lol
I just saw you post an answer @Tinkeringbell on meta.stackexchange.com/questions/366752/…
Same as with the Mexican Flu that was around a few years back
To avoid the herds from becoming racist against people from a certain country
@Wolf Same reason the original virus is not longer the Chinese Flu/Wuhan virus: Hiding the name makes it less discriminatory apparently ;)
10:02 AM
ok
@Luuklag It's weird though, we can have a Brazilian variant, a British variant... and then when one is found in India we all of a sudden have to change again XD
what?
That ;-)
@Tinkeringbell Meh, I think they just anticipate a lot of new variants to track. Scientific names are difficult for the general public. Also having 2 distinct Indian variants becomes difficult ;)
@Luuklag Indian-1 and Indian-2 ;) I dunno, I've never had much with the Greek alphabet either, I find that harder to keep track which variant is which (is beta the variant that originated in Brazil or South-Africa?) than the place names too.
10:14 AM
Yeah I agree that the switch is hard. On the news I usually hear: Delta, formerly the Indian variant
Should we do something about the comments on this Q&A? meta.stackexchange.com/questions/366710/…
@Luuklag Hmm. If you see any that can go feel free to flag individual ones... so far I don't see many at a first glance.
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard Hopefully not before Thursday...
@Luuklag Same, though often turned around too : Indian variant, also known as delta variant.
@SmokeDetector k
@Tinkeringbell Meh the entire Q&A ;)
@Luuklag If y'all want to delete the entire Q&A I'm fine with that. The comments have made it clear this wasn't just some poor soul that needed some prompting on what their options were, like I interpreted the first question.

I'd almost comment "Everyone else who are sharing their knowledge on traditional forums also don't get paid while the hosting sites are profiting. Though, they can put donation link on their signature/profile."
And also "I don't think the kind of contribution on SE will be accepted on Wikipedia (and that's why I don't/can't contribute there)"

@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard If the angle is more than 90° and less than 180° it's obtuse, less than 90° and it's acute. It seems a bit bloated and weak, as most other Frameworks are lighter and offer more features: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/… - plus it's a front for Google Analytics.
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard is it a language? I thought it was javascript / typescript with a framework/library for routing / data-binding?
Rob
Rob
@Luuk, that link ^ compares Frameworks.
A rewrite (superset) of old ECMAScript.
12:57 PM
Yeah we need to find a platform for something we are making. And just talked to one who develop everything in Angular, and we have to make our own front and backend
Others already have a front and back end that we can re-use
So kinda in doubt what we should do, also taking dev costs into account
Did you consider a low-code/ zero-code platform? Mendix, Be Informed, to name two.
@g3rv4 we were... but it came back with a variant that bypass the vaccine.
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard crap... is that the Delta variant? and... that bypasses the Phizer? sh*t
@Rob nah, Angular is fine. Can be better, like any framework.
@rene Well we're kinda looking where we can serve our userbase best. We really don't care much about the framework/hosting /online tool as long as it fits reasonabilly within the budgets.
1:05 PM
@rene it's not a language, it's using several languages. Think it can be referred to as "framework", but meh, don't want to make things complex for @Luuklag. ;)
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard Like english? :D
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard Meh, its probably not like I'm going to do any of the programming. We'll outsource that
@g3rv4 yes Delta indeed, and yes most people here including me got the one from Pfizer.
@Luuklag yeah, well, should be fine, it's very popular and on the rise.
@JourneymanGeek it's like... nope ;)
@ShadowTheVaccinatedWizard Yeah, and these guys told us that there are already a whole lot of open-source pieces they could pick and pull together.
English is the super language. :P
@Luuklag probably, this part I never checked as I do things on my own. :)

I've got all of the questions tagged with open in tabs in a new window. It's neat to run through them and see that there's pending recent activity.
I plan on including the stats of what happened posts tagged with that tag as a result of them getting attention from @Ollie 's burninate request. I think it'd be neat to see how many were closed, deleted, etc.
@Spevacus thanks ;) I've been looking through them and I'm still deciding what to vote to delete...
I yeet'd one of them, but the others don't really seem that bad.
I added scope to one you recently edited @Ollie, might be a good tag to use here and there
@Spevacus didn't see that. I usually balk at deleting a post if there's a well-voted answer there, unless it's really just crap
@Luuklag thanks
@Spevacus the other two delvotes are ... from 2015
2:03 PM
I did notice that the other two folks aren't active here anymore, yeah.
2:34 PM
@Luuklag there are some good answers below this post, but the OP's answer is _. I threw it a delete vote as well
Eh. Not sure how I feel about that one.
Rob
Rob
@Oll, @Spe, my 2¢: Three uses of that tag seem fair, the remainder seem superfluous; we don't need the tag on MSE to ask about our own websites, what else would we be asking about - well, if it's elsewhere then that tag is useful. The three useful instances seem to be: meta.stackexchange.com/q/94022/282094 meta.stackexchange.com/q/134570/282094 meta.stackexchange.com/q/306015/282094
@Rob For the first link, I honestly think the external sources tag might be decent here. Not sure about the other two questions, though. Thanks for the 2¢!
The second is already closed as dupe @Rob, so we could just as well delete that. There are a bazillion copies of that kind of question.
And in the third we could change websites with hyperlinks I think
@SmokeDetector f
Rob
Rob
@Spevacus Yeah, that's another tag without usage guidelines; so we have to expertly guess what the best usage would be. For the first link I was thinking that they might be seeking an answer that offers suggestions for their website, so we don't visit a 2-3 paragraph article with 20+ ADs; that the blog offers extended value and that a more thorough explanation is offered by following the link - rather than it being spam.
2:52 PM
@Luuklag There are quite a few, I've gone ahead and voted to delete that one. It doesn't have any extra keywords that might help with search engine optimization so I don't think we need it anymore.
Rob
Rob
@Luuklag ... yes, and I noticed that both the dupes chose not to use the tag --- Darn people for creating a new tag and at least not creating the excerpt (as a minimum); I try to create both the excerpt and a short helpful wiki - four rep if you're low rep and your responsibility if you're high rep., and just lazy if you don't do the minimum - it creates triple the extra work later (frequently).
Good on your for including an excerpt 'n such. I wish the folks of old were as vigilant about that. :(
Rob
Rob
@Luuklag The hyperlinks tag seems good. That's an example of a poor tag wiki, it's a copy of the excerpt; no additional information is offered by clicking on the more info link, it's really less info for the effort.
