12:44 AM
@Shog9 Is my analysis of a certain issue correct? Are any one of my proposed fixes technically feasible?

12:58 AM
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog Is this ping necessary?

@ArtOfCode There might be something I'm missing. For instance, I don't know why one of the spam-deleted questions I linked wasn't properly deleted as spam, or why the post linked in the question that was deleted as spam wasn't deleted by Community, but by normal users instead.

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog If it were me, a descriptive link or link text would be preferred... When you obscure it like that it takes more effort to actually see if I have anything to say.

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog What I'm getting at is "does this need verification, or could it just be left as a non-official answer?"

@ArtOfCode Also, I want to know from SE whether they consider the issue to be an "edge case not worth fixing", or if it's worth applying one of my suggested fixes. Or, there may be another fix I haven't listed.

Same question.

1:02 AM
It's tagged as a , which means sooner or later it needs a status tag.
@ArtOfCode My answer simply lists the cause of the bug.
It can't be used as a non-official but official citation.

Um... I hate to break it to you, but there are hundreds if not thousands of un-status-tagged bugs on MSE.

My point is - in the interests of reducing the number of frivolous pings to CMs, particularly Shog, you could forgo verification here and just leave your reasoning there for others to make what they will of. Let the CM's decide on their own whether they respond to that one, rather than making it on your schedule.

Amusingly, the 2 button works fine for me.

@Catija It didn't work for me, though.

1:06 AM
OK.

1:39 AM
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog yep, that's exactly correct. Good job!
The work-around should suffice for now

@Shog9 Thanks! Are any of my fixes feasible, or is it too much of an edge case to deal with?

It's... Not a difficult thing to fix. I'm just not sure I see any payoff in fixing it.

@Shog9 Also, why is the post linked in the question showing as deleted as spam or offensive? It was voted to delete by users, and I normally only see that if it was flagged six times and deleted by Community.

It doesn't actually have to be deleted as spam/offensive. Just needs to have helpful spam/offensive flags
(and be deleted)

@Shog9 I don't think that that's the case. As far as I know, one helpful red flag just triggers the spam mask. It by itself doesn't cause the URL slug to not show or the deletion to be annotated as "spam or offensive".
As far as I can tell it was deleted because the user was destroyed, hence by Community. But despite a spam mask, the URL slug still shows and the deletion notice doesn't say "this question was deleted as spam or offensive".

1:48 AM
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog nope
There's something else unique about this question that's triggering that message
Well, not exactly unique

@Shog9 That it's locked?

There you go
Here's a pretty similar question on SO to compare with: stackoverflow.com/questions/133556/…
And another that doesn't exhibit this particular behavior: stackoverflow.com/questions/2119826/…

@Shog9 So if a question with active red flags is locked and deleted, it triggers the "question was deleted as spam or offensive" annotation in the deletion notice and the URL slug behavior?

yep

Thanks for the insight!

Entertainment is a 2015 American drama film directed by Rick Alverson, starring Gregg Turkington, Tye Sheridan, and John C. Reilly. It is loosely based on Turkington's Neil Hamburger character. The plot follows a stand-up comedian as he performs in various locations where the audience is either hostile or indifferent to him. Alverson, Turkington and Tim Heidecker co-wrote the film. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2015. @andmyself Flag? I wasn't being sarcastic
It is the best comment there
Goes with the Shog spirit of things too
If I saw something I flagged as R/A that should have gone was edited instead, sure, I might open a meta about why it stayed
But everyone knows that post wasn't gonna stay, and the only reason for the (in)valid decline could be choosing the wrong flag type
So opening up a meta post about it is ALREADY overthinking it in the first place, and of course it'd be expected that any disagreement in the answers would stem from questioning the validity of the decline itself, not the post outcome

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ then upvote it ...

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ well, I didn't mean to flag that comment. I meant to keep flagging the posts as you believe, and move one if declined...

There would have been a little value if this is so recurring that the mounting number of declines would dissuade an avid flagger, but is it common enough?

Q: Past Perfect Used Instead of Simple Past Tense in 'The Kite Runner'

Yohanes ThedaI'm currently reading 'The Kite Runner' by Khaled Hosseini, and notice that in some place in the book, i can't really comprehend the use of past perfect tense instead of simple past tense. Consider this paragraph: "Yes." It was the shortcut to school. I remembered the day Hassan and I crossed...

You didn't miss a thing there. We were doing fine with three ;)

Now why the hell are ELL questions more frequent?

This does mean everyone should flag more, as there were already not so much flags for the three of us to handle...

@ShadowWizard Three unmonitored pets can wreck havoc

@Tinkeringbell well, yesterday the off topic wave did overflow for few hours. :)

8:23 AM
@Tinkeringbell Oh really?

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ Really. :)

I had developed this subconscious thing that because devs should be devving not handling comment flags, I shouldn't go around cleaning stuff here

People kinda unlearned flagging here as processing them took so much time ;)

I didn't realize that now things have changed and I can
6 to 8 and my subconscious will realize it too

Wow. Okay, there's a lot of off-topic questions :/

8:31 AM
flags everything

I guess Shog or balpha can check the traffic logs and see what's going on.
Or, just leave it like this and let dozens of people get angry and frustrated.
(not us, those we close and delete their questions.)

So I'm thinking of a method of how to ban comments from users whose comments end up getting deleted as violating the Code of Conduct. I'm thinking of making it like how flag bans work: if a threshold percentage of comments made in the last 7 days get flagged and removed, the user should be warned, and if past a higher threshold, the user should be temporarily banned.

@Tink how many off topic questions were there yesterday in MSE? How many were there, e.g. 10 days ago?
(should be easy to find with closed:1 deleted:1 search for example)

@ShadowWizard Should be easy to find in 10k tools

I suspect it's about 100 yesterday vs. 10-20 before the survey began.
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog nah, it's showing very partial list.

8:36 AM
I'm counting 27 in the last 24 hours

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog it'd be much easier to just give mods the ability to take away the comment privilege...

@Mithrandir True, but I think there should also be automatic bans, because it's possible for comments to be automatically deleted if enough users flag them.

@Tinkeringbell oh. Felt like much more. Oh well.

Only 16 marked 'yesterday'

One thing is that while flags can be explicitly marked helpful, comments can't, so we can't implement the way it works for flag bans exactly because that considers the handling time of flags, without regard to flagging time.

8:38 AM
@ShadowWizard just shows how incapable we are at guesstimating ...

Hmm... just to be sure, the "Custom question lists" is the New New New Nav, right?
(as the New New Nav was shut down.)

So what do you think of this system: if 10% of comments made by a user within the last 7 days get deleted as HBA or UoU, warn the user, and if 25% of comments get deleted for that reason, ban the user temporarily.

We already have an excellent way to stop such amounts of rude/abusive comments.
It's called a suspension

@Tinkeringbell Do moderators have easy records of users' comments getting deleted automatically in response to normal users flagging?

We get an automated flag, and we have the comment history/annotations.

8:43 AM
@ShadowWizard yes, maybe you missed a new there ...

> Warning! Some of the comments you've made recently have been deleted as violating the Code of Conduct. Please be sure to familiarize yourself with the Code of Conduct before commenting on this post.
> Attention! Too many of the comments you've made recently have been deleted as violating the Code of Conduct. You'll be able to comment again in [x] days. Until then, please be sure to familiarize yourself with the Code of Conduct.
@Tinkeringbell I was just thinking, IPS has a problem of too many comments not being abusive, but too chatty, etc. (in general, no longer needed). Maybe we can have a per-site setting for "no longer needed" flags to also count towards said automatic bans, and up the thresholds in that case.

Bad idea. IPS also has a lot of useful comments, that are deleted after edits.
I don't want the few people that do genuinely care about moderating IPS caught in the throes of an automatic no longer needed ban

@Tinkeringbell I guess things were a lot better when "too chatty" and "obsolete" were two separate flagging options.
Then you could exclude "obsolete" flags while including "too chatty" flags.

A lot of "no longer needed" comments were at some point ... needed

@Magisch yup. banning users because of past mistakes is awful idea.

8:50 AM
@ShadowWizard AFAIK no, and you can go through all the questions quickly by skipping the optional questions (I have done it twice before)

Suppose I wrote 100 comments 7 years ago, which are no longer needed, and got deleted in a batch. If this lead to a comment ban, I'll quit the site. Plain and simple.

@ShadowWizard To be clear here, my general idea only takes into account comments made in the past 7 days.

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog ARE YOU SERIOUS

@ShadowWizard So those 7-year-old comments wouldn't count.

Or are you a hedgehog?

Automatic comment bans just seem like a bad idea. Instead, raise an automatic mod flag and let the mods know about the potential problem and let them decide if it warrants action.

Finally image host you can use? :D

8:56 AM
@Mithrandir Hmm. I imagine cases where it would definitely not go amiss are users who've already caused enough trouble to be noticed
@ShadowWizard I can use an Iranian image host as well, it's just not built into SE
So it's mostly just coping with you guys when there's a funny image with 12 stars and everyone's going LMAOROFLROTF and I'm for the most part "Haha yeah what a funny image . . . loading bar"

Would it be a good idea for an FR though, to have the NLN option separated back into two separate options for chatty comments vs. obsolete comments on IPS?

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ that's sad, yeah. :(

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog Why? Both are deleted anyway. I'm not going to decline one or the other if the comment has to go. NLN fits IPS just fine :)

The reason NLN exists is not its definition

@M.A.R. OK, here's an amazing picture you must see!!1!!!!

9:00 AM
It's mostly a "this comment should go but this dude is alright" flag

Besides... comment levels on IPS have dropped, and we're not in need of automatic comment bans, nor do I think we will be soon.
Also... where does this thing with using IPS as an example for features come from?

@Tinkeringbell you

There's more sites in the network than just IPS

@Mithrandir you win! :P
@Tinkeringbell you came from IPS, not from more sites. ;)

9:02 AM
@Tinkeringbell I mean, there is an autoflag for HBA and UoU flags; this would allow for other things such as an autoflag for too many chatty comments. Or, the feature I proposed above.

(i.e. as mod)

Usually, you don't propose changing the entire system based on a problem on a single site.... and that problem isn't even there as much anymore.

@Tinkeringbell Note that I said "per-site setting"

UoU looks more like the reaction of the flagger than the abbreviation for the flag

So I feel this is going to need a much stronger example, that isn't IPS or any other single site.

9:03 AM
AFAIK The Workplace also had a similar problem for a while.

@Tinkeringbell Well, the post sucks anyway because it's old, and I doubt it was meant to be a dupe master. Countless questions have been duped to it though
The point I was trying to make since the beginning was that maybe the best thing to tell a new user is not to break the barrier that prevents them from posting bad answers, but to look around a bit and edit things.
Benefits: A quarter of looking around gives them a better idea of what posts are received how well

@Tinkeringbell The last sentence in your user script suggests to authors that they should delete their question, but as a moderator, you already do so. Is it possible you can change that sentence to be in the past tense? Ex. "Your question is off-topic here on Meta and has been deleted here."

"better off deleted here" when it's already deleted is like "it's better this way"
