hey, what's this for on stackoverflow? i don't get it on any other sites in the network:

Your post appears to contain code that is not properly formatted as code. Please indent all code by 4 spaces using the code toolbar button or the CTRL+K keyboard shortcut. For more editing help, click the [?] toolbar icon.

It's what it says on the tin. Something in your post looks like code that's missing formatting.

how do i bypass it
i want to post exactly what i have written

@tjt263 META

Try to post it on formatting sandbox first because there's no restriction, then we can check if something is wrong or not

it's exactly how i want it. I just want to bypass the warning

SO is stricter; you can't bypass it. But there are many meta posts that may point the "issue" (or bug).

It's not a warning. It's a quality filter.

yes, it's filtering the quality
here i used the sandbox

@tjt263 and an extra white space line at the start of your code, add an <-- language: lang-default --> on a line by itself with an empty line in front and an empty line right under it. If you have images, add lines between them as well. Or do a <pre><code> at the start and </pre></code> at the end.

Ooh that's odd

Maybe it's detecting an image of code?
Converting to markdown should help. I can't even see that parts of the code are bolded anyways.

@tjt263 I gave that an edit, try it with my version

maybe, i don't really care. i just want to push it through
i don;t know why you cant see bold, i can
@rene thank,s did it work

That attitude isn't healthy. Just saying.

6:33 AM
Maybe the ~~~~ in your markup is causing issues as well, as those are now code-fence delimiters

oh, true

I think they should only be taken into account at the start of a line.
But I didn't experiment enough with it

Well, I didn't expect the question got posted without any modification though...

@andmyself you have too much rep ....

True, blame me...

@tjt263 did you try to post my revision?

@tjt263 I deleted it because that's not my question and I don't want to be responsible for any comments that I can't reply, nor any answers that should be accepted

@rene i tried. no dice
@andmyself was it my question? you got it to work?
can i see it? i will copy and paste it real quick

@tjt263 yes, I posted it as-is, but as rene said, probably the quality filter doesn't apply with my rep (above 4k)
alright, I undelete it...

ohh, right. well, you can see the quality is fine, can you push it through for me somehow please? or grant me some kind of privilege? please

@tjt263 it's automatic sooooo not really

6:51 AM
That's certainly out of my control. I'm just a normal user on SO...

Just abandon most of the markup and use either code fences or the 4 space indent for the stuff you want to be code

can a moderator change the ownership of a question?
surely

6:57 AM
@tjt263 I said earlier that you need to remove all the markup and just use plain code blocks, so without the <code><pre> stuff.

i shouldn't have to though should i
that will remove the formatting
the quality filter is misbehaving

No, it is fine, You're pushing the limits

@tjt263 no

it's not fine.

7:01 AM
@tjt263 the best option is to do as Rene suggested
Then you can try editing it better

it is. Without it we would be swarmed with undecipherable html markup from 70% of the PHP posters. That you can't post your fancy C errors is a corner case that doesn't needs to be supported

I deleted the question again. I really don't want to take any responsibility for that post. Also, no, mods can't change the ownership without merging the account.

We can't merge accounts anyway

While SE devs could change it with black magic dev tools, there should be a very very convincing reason, and this is not the case.

@JohnDvorak boring

7:05 AM
So either compromise with the formatting (we don't need anything fancy, as long as it's understood), or... I dunno, get more rep?

@tjt263 post the question. Post a bug report on meta(so?) Referencing the places where it worked
@andmyself or let him post, then replace the whole question by an edit by someone of rep...
Which could make for a better bug report

yes
that
clever
good thinking @JourneymanGeek

Let me preemptively say that I will only edit it if OP gets to post with normal markdown first.

@andmyself no problem, thanks.

This is why I get paid in t shirts every few years ;p

7:10 AM
tshirts?

that said... while I appreciate the fancy bold formatting in the code block (with <pre><code></code></pre>, I'm still unsure whether it's needed or not

Well is it what the actual error output is?

In which case all answer converted -> community wiki ? Just noticed this question. All answer is community wiki.

@Shree the question is CW.
There used to be auto community wiki conversion too
Actually that's a great case for CW

@JourneymanGeek humm. Thanks.

@JourneymanGeek next thing is CM's T-shirts? :p

you're right, it's not essential. it just improves the quality and readability. which i'm all about. here's the post stackoverflow.com/q/54285206/6998458
if you could paste the original as an edit, that would be great thanks

I just need to copy the markdown from the original revision, right? No changed text or other content?

7:38 AM
@andmyself they can do that themself :p

@andmyself that's right. thanks
you can just copy paste the whole thing over the whole thing

Done

appreciate it thanks

8:12 AM
@JourneymanGeek I agree, it's great to get a rare T-Shirt. This is one of 100:

8:25 AM
@Rob That's not a T-shirt though :P

It isn't?

@JourneymanGeek Nope, T-shirts have short sleeves, afaik
This is either just a shirt, a longsleeve, or a sweatshirt

nope
Long sleeved T shirts are a thing.

A T-shirt (or t shirt, or tee) is a style of unisex fabric shirt named after the T shape of its body and sleeves. Traditionally it has short sleeves and a round neckline, known as a crew neck, which lacks a collar. T-shirts are generally made of a stretchy, light and inexpensive fabric and are easy to clean. Typically made of cotton textile in a stockinette or jersey knit, it has a distinctively pliable texture compared to shirts made of woven cloth. Some modern versions have a body made from a continuously knitted tube, produced on a circular knitting machine, such that the torso has no side...

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, then they're called longsleeves :P

8:29 AM
Traditionally it has short sleeves and a round neckline

A blind adherence to tradition is a sign one has nothing better to do

@JourneymanGeek Just listen to the woman: T-shirts have short sleeves :P

@Tinkeringbell its sexist to assume women know more about fashion....
;p

Later in the article: Another less popular trend is wearing a short-sleeved T-shirt of a contrasting color over a long-sleeved T-shirt, which is known as layering.

@JourneymanGeek Oh, I don't know about fashion :P
I do know that if I go shopping and ask for a t-shirt, I'll never be warm!

8:32 AM
So long-sleeved T-shirts apparently exist but are against tradition.

If everyone over here stuck with tradition I wouldn't be wearing t-shirts at all

Something like that? :P

That's....
blindingly blue

I think my gran still has a string of those red beads the older lady is wearing around her neck.
Also, I think that's more 'sunday' wear.
That looks a bit less blue :P

8:37 AM
ah
at least your ears won't be cold

You never know. Journeyman might insist that those are T-shirts too.

MAYBE THEY ARE

T-shirts are in the eye of the beholder.

@JourneymanGeek I don't wear that kind of stuff. :P

S-thirts

Monday Morning whine: meta.stackexchange.com/q/322656/369802 Why is that a duplicate? It's not asking for why there's a six char limit, but proposing a way of making 1 char edits to me. The other one meta.stackexchange.com/questions/322661/… on the same subject is still open ?!

@Tinkeringbell what prevents you from reopening it?

@Magisch My limited understanding of how dupes work on MSE? :P

I certainly think the other one is not a duplicate. (It's mine.)
And it was actually inspired by the closed one.

@Tinkeringbell the duplicate is to answer the "If my 1-character edit of an answer is legitimate, why prevent the change?" on the question, even though it's tagged as feature-request.
because at this point, there's no indicator that the OP understands why there's a restriction put beforehand

9:20 AM
@Tinkeringbell Latter one isn't a dupe by MSE standards; it asks for a new feature and shows awareness of why the current configuration exists. By the way, I consider the case where there is nothing whatsoever that needs to be changed other than a small typo or formatting to be a valid case, but an extremely rare edge case that the team shouldn't have to work around.

So.. doesn't that question need at least a comment explaining all that? We're dealing with a new user here :/

Mine got more downvotes though. Hooray!

Regarding the downvotes, see this statement from Tim Post, especially the second paragraph.
@Tinkeringbell Yeah, simply closing as a duplicate of a post that the user linked isn't a good idea. Yes, it does need such a comment.

I don't particularly mind the downvotes. (Though I would prefer some comments/answers from the 16 downvoters stating why they don't like the idea.)

@Alex Sometimes you just dislike stuff, without being able to coherently formulate the reasons for doing so ;)

9:30 AM
@Tinkeringbell True. But I can still prefer it.

@Tinkeringbell I believe the chances of a person being able to do so is at least 1 in 16

@Alex Haven't voted on your request because I'm still unsure. At the very least, I'd probably support it if there's no bonus/positive reinforcement for that (e.g. no bonus rep, no increase in editor's & reviewer's stats)
but it still needs to bump to be monitored by the community

I think for 1 character a comment saying 'Dude, you misspelled that, correct it now or I'll downvote' would do :P

@andmyself I didn't specify about rewards, but I would be fine if there weren't any. I'd even be fine if it was limited to people who have editing privileges on other sites. And yes, it should still be bumped to get monitored.

Perhaps it'd be a great idea to actually track the incidence of this issue. Whenever someone tries to suggest such an edit and gets the error, the action and attempted change should be logged, and statistics should be compiled to see what percentage of such attempted changes could have used a more substantive edit.

9:33 AM
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog Not a bad idea. I can only speak for myself, but it happens to me often enough.

My opinion is that the percentage is low enough that this is an edge case that isn't worth worrying about. But if so many people complain about it, perhaps I'm wrong, and the data will show that.

There was a Hot Network Question from Workplace the other day that had a lot of answers and there were a few typos/mistakes in some of them. I could have easily corrected them all in one fell swoop, but now they're probably still sitting there unless someone else noticed them.

There is one issue that is overlooked, however. The system normally allows title and tag-only suggested edits that don't change the body, but on some specific posts, one gets this error despite not making any body edits.
I ran into this issue quite a few times when burning tags on Super User.

Rob
@Tinkeringbell Stack Exchange should give out those white hats, with the SE/SO logos on the sides. :¶

@Rob Hahaha If they did, I'd wear it and post a selfie, okay? :P

9:38 AM

A: Cannot suggest retag-only edit because "edits must be at least 6 characters"

Shog9There was a single zero-width space at the end of the post body. These are stripped on submission now... Unfortunately, that's done before the system compares the revisions to see what has changed. So it saw the tag edits and a one-character body edit. The subjective title warning is entirely in...

Now that is a valid bug, and not an edge case.

@Alex Do not dare asking for comments or useful feedback or ͠͞he̕ ͠w͏̡il̡̨͠l̴̡ ҉a͝w̸͏ak̵̛͜e͢ ́͜҉ and ......
... it is to late now ...
run, my little ponies, run before the unspeakable one gets you...

Don't hurt me.

that reminds me that you can't even suggest an edit on meta :)

@andmyself You can suggest tag wiki edits though

@Alex Translation: I kindly advise you avoid fighting that specific windmill since only pain and tears are to be gained by trying to discuss that "small" problem again.

9:43 AM
@andmyself Another frustration...

@Derpy Hey, it's okay. Raising awareness for the fact that you haven't gotten feedback yet isn't too bad.

@andmyself though typically we assume people should have some prior familiarity with the site for meta + most typos are...
Less critical

@Tinkeringbell I was talking about the old "please make comment mandatory on downvotes" argument - and all the related variants like "canned anonymous mandatory downvote comments" and the such.

@Derpy Oh, yeah... Well that may be beating a dead horse, yeah.

@Tinkeringbell Always been a problem, always ignored, always replied to with "reductio ad ridiculum"

@JourneymanGeek true dat
Typo on the title: "ration" should be "rational" — Andrew T. 21 hours ago

Still. If someone feels like leaving a comment, they should :P

works for me

The system prompts <2k rep users who downvote to leave a comment
I believe this to be an acceptable compromise.

Rob
@Tinkeringbell and your pointy boots!

pointy boots? I don't have pointy boots, are you confusing me with someone else perhaps?
How 'bout wooden shoes? :P

9:52 AM

Rob

10:25 AM
Poof!

Rob
10:41 AM
@Tinkeringbell Are you saying that they are not shoes for a female, or they are only men's shoes. What I know about them is: They are not mine!

@Rob I am saying I just poofed two spams there :P
They are definitely for both males and females. Wooden shoes don't discriminate ;)

Rob
Ah, I translated the word "poof" from Dutch to English.

It's not even a valid Dutch word afaik

Rob
Perhaps it is slang, also used in other European countries, Germany I think ... Moving on.

@Rob I definitely had never heard of that before... it's not particularly nice :/

Rob
10:48 AM
True. I wondered if there was a criticism about the random photo. Moving on.

With what? :P
Quick... we need a topic

Rob
It used to be, 30-40 years ago one could say: "That looks ..." - and it meant "too brightly colored". Now it's a slur. I'm OK if you like, or do not like, the shoes; they are not mine. Usually no one in North America wears pointy boots or wooden shoes. Coyboy boots, construction boots, even platform soles (Tom Jones) have been popular, people might call you Donny Osmond then.

I'm going to stick with just shoes :P

Rob
I'm watching "Forged in Fire", do you like that show?
😃

I've heard of it. It's on tv here at the most impossible times for watching though, so I never really watched it.
It's where they forge their own weapons, right?

Rob
10:58 AM
Correct. In the follow up series they use homemade edged weapons and run a gauntlet of challenges - chopping things up.

I've seen the adverts. Looked good to me :)

not always home made
but the idea's to test the person's skills too

Rob
In North America many things are on at "impossible times" but we have a hard drive built in to the TV Cable Box, and can automagically record shows and actually view them at any time. We can record each episode for a week and then watch on the weekend in a constant multiple hour sitting.

basically forged in fire is a cooking show with steel rather than food ;p
