@Glorfindel Cool according to that I'm #80

New image uploader, new bugs. :(

3:18 PM
Autumn is almost over. Then there will be no more new bugs.

^^^ This is optimism turned into an art form

post-factual, you could say even

I'm tempted to change my last name to "Pre" and then take a sabbatical just to discover a whole new set of implications.

Puns are a lighthearted way to break the ice in social situations :D
And I have a black belt in subpar punnery

on the left, terminal output of clamscan.
on the right, clamTK log.
why the different know viruses counts??

... Viruses Overflow?

@ShadowWizard I fear both our questions will get the same ending. Utterly ignored :P

A: How many chat flags are required to remove a message/ban a user?

balphaThese are the current numbers ("current" because they can obviously be changed, but there aren't any plans to do so; they have been like this for a while): The threshold is six, meaning the net flag count of the message has to reach six. Net flag count means the number of flags minus the number ...

Today will surely be a record day for off-topic posts on MSE. Someone should write a Halloween horror story - The Day of the Off-Topic Questions.

In this Halloween horror story we find out shog is actually a disembodied head and has been haunting SE for a decade

When off-topic questions are scarier than most ghosts...

3:32 PM
@Derpy maybe... I got upvote. Done my part. ;)
@Shog9 so simple. So old. Thanks! :)
When will welcome wagon reach chat aka when will chat flags get a total overhaul?

:shrug:

checking what date that means
status-overflow

"When will welcome wagon reach chat" i mean, it has. we have a shiny new welcome dialog for new users, and people are now more willing to cast flags on unkind messages

@KevinB Yeah but chat flagging is still kinda hidden (and slow)

oooh, night drama show about 'abusive cluser'...

3:50 PM
Cluser? What's that?

> I had used [curator] when I copypasted my question, but it emerged it was an already used term, so I had to make up another one. CLose-privilege USER --> CLUSER
(yeah, it's a drama show on MSE, though the rating might not be too high this time...)
hmm, anyway, that's not my objective of browsing MSE
I just wanted to know about the new image uploader, which... was the new feature balpha implemented?

@Shog9 I'm sorry for that. But my flags seem to have been justified, considering that basically all of them were considered helpful. I just thought I clean up the remnants of the pre-MSE era a bit. Sorry again, I didn't intend to make your work / life harder.

not a big deal, just curious what triggered it

I thought I check out that search combination and saw all those SO tag requests. And then, I just couldn't stop (else I would have had to do actual work)

4:14 PM
@Somewhat found out. Turns out it probably depends on some options, like using PUA definitions or not

@Derpy good to know ;)
> You can now paste or drag and drop an image into the editor

@ShadowWizard psst: you can aim your blame with Smokey

I AM SO HAPPY.
Now the problem is, can I (or how long will it take to) overwrite my muscle memory not to click that image button? :)

4:36 PM
@Tinkeringbell and impossible to understand
@Mithrandir so it's well hidden. Kudos! ;)
Some obscure regex?
!!/blame {{foo bar}}

@ShadowWizard It's Gabe's fault.

Nope.
!!/blame "s/{{i}}/g/Shog"

@ShadowWizard It's balpha's fault.

no no
Oh well, will further try to find the hidden command later.
@Somewhat read that as "cluster" and wondered how a cluster can be abusive. Still do. ;)

4:59 PM
@ShadowWizard trying this instead: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/ask/advice

> It's the wrong place to ask most questions
:)
it's not yet finished, right? still can proceed without (re)searching and/or ticking that checkmark...

@Somewhat well you can, because you're not a new user on MSE.
create a new 1-rep account & try it

oh, oops >_<

@Shog9 Do you have some sort of alert on links with double protocols? Or did you just happen to be on DBA? Don't see many edits from you 🙂

cool

This is causing errors. People are entering https://https://. So far, that error has slipped through for 15 posts (14 + 1). That's 15/(54 + 14) = 22% of all such errors on the Stack Exchange Network in the very brief time the dialog has been working this way. [Note: I have not double checked each occurrence, it's possible that a few are intentional.] At this rate, the problem is going to be quite significant. — Makyen 2 hours ago
balpha grabbed the ones on SO (which were the bulk of them), but this caught a handful of others scattered across the network

user194636
seems this was premature

5:30 PM
For hyperlinks, I guess I'm an outlier who just writes its markdown manually :)

I do both
long URLs make the markdown hard to read, so using ctrl+L to insert a footnote-style link helps
short URLs make the markdown easier to read, so I put them inline
also, if I'm writing a post in a normal text editor, I almost always just put the links inline because it's easier

If only the next feature is to scan ![image](https://non-stack-imgur.com) and prompt the user whether they want to upload them to SE Imgur before posting (after clicking 'submit'), then it'd perfect and I can ditch the whole toolbar
or probably I should embrace the shortcut keys more...

copy image, ctrl+v, enter is such an elegant workflow

user194636
CTRL-G, CTRL-V brought me to SE in the first place

user194636
my previous site made adding images nothing short of torturous

5:44 PM
@Somewhat I'll occassionally use a manual html as well... depending on how hard markdown is fighting the formatting I'm try to achieve.

@PaulWhite I said no more bugs after Autumn is over :P
Still Autumn, isn't it?

what a garbled mess... I swear English is my first language.

6:11 PM
@Shog9 any idea why pasting an image into the body of the post opens the image interface instead of just processing the image and injecting it automatically? Seems like an unnecessary step... especially given that there's doesn't appear to be anything else handled in that image UI, i.e.: alt-text.

@canon no wasted uploads, no irritating pauses (while that upload happens), chance to avoid accidentally uploading something you didn't realize was on your clipboard...

yeah... we have that feature with the dark SO chat theme... it just auto uploads anything you paste to the window and posts it.
definitely prone to user error

@Shog9 fair enough. That said, if there's the potential for a long-running upload, perhaps that's a good time to gather alt-text from the user.

6:53 PM
@Shog9 better than nothing. Curious to see stats tomorrow. :)
@canon keep in mind that once uploaded it will be there forever, even if never posted. Anyone can stumble upon anything uploaded to imgur. :)

Not true. I presume the things on i.stack.imgur.com are set as private, as making them public would cause a massive mess on usersub? SE also doesn't publish drafts anywhere, so no spilling the URLs that way? So, anyone trying to get hands on "anything uploaded to imgur" is left with just guessing random hashes to see if anything comes out of it?

7:10 PM
@JohnDvorak random hashes it is. Still, with only 6 characters you don't get infinite amount.

Optimus comes from cosmos, so he must know more than me about Mars.. Maybe humans are maybe up to a cheesy discovery by 2022...+1 for giving us the heads up! Hope you like my cheesy riddle, as much I enjoyed your ... cheesy insight! — gsamaras 6 hours ago

@ShadowWizard True... though, nothing says you have to upload those pasted images right away. You've already got the image data, you could leave it in memory until the whole post is submitted... then upload them and resolve all of your links after the fact. Of course, that wouldn't play well with the existing pipeline...

@ShadowWizard Anything? Oh dear... I need to delete some stuff :P

8:08 PM
@canon it's definitely possible, but at some point it's a lot of work (and a lot of potentially-fragile scripting) to avoid a step that's probably kinda welcomed for a bunch of folks.

Just wondering - could SE get in trouble for the content their users shove onto their Imgur account?

8:26 PM
don't store your bitcoins there

@Shog9 that and storing image data in localStorage for drafts probably wouldn't be great. Actually, I haven't looked to see how drafts are preserved...

we could definitely use a better system for storing drafts; I think someone may be working on that
But regardless, imagine writing an answer with a dozen or so large images
And then imgur balks on, say, image #7

What do we allow, 2MB? What does imgur crush that down to? #ALLTHECOMPRESSION

The nice thing about the current system is, it's very easy to predict what it's gonna do
if I'm half-way through writing a post and my browser crashes or whatever, that draft is probably fine
if I wanna be extra sure, I copy the text out into an editor, save it locally as a text file, drop it onto google drive or whatever... It's fine. Nothing is gonna expire or get lost.

eeeek drafts

8:32 PM
Is this the new thing balpha was fiddling with, or something else?
I don't remember what the fiddling related to

it is indeed

cool

you rarely hear me say this but that looks neat

fire on the mountain, run boys run...

8:33 PM
So... if we're getting Q&A features... maybe we can get API flag retraction?
My mission is to get that implemented before I die

maybe. Why?

Now you see how slippery a slope implemented new features are :P

@Shog9 Would allow all kinds of awesome stuff esp. around SmokeDetector ops. Automatically reverting bad flags in the rare cases they come up, throwing custom flags with a bunch of nice detail for mods that auto-retract on post deletion, etc.

@Shog9 I see fire ... on the mountain ...

Right now we're limited in our response to the few autoflag FPs we get. We always see it within a few seconds, but cast flags are cast and we can't retract without pinging people.

8:36 PM
APi flag retractions would rock

I'm not a flagger nut but I also see the benefit of such a feature, if it were to exist
The people have spoken! :P

All three of them!

well one is a dog, one is a plant and the third one is a green blob, but yeah

a green fractal, not just an ordinary blob

very pretty new dialog

I've actually been musing about changing my avatar to one generated with an iterated function system...

@Tinkeringbell too late! looking on CD labelled "PRIVATE!" :D
@Quill where?

Q: Editor improvements for images and links

Joe FriendWe are launching some editor improvements today. These improvements are required as a part of our responsive design efforts, but we think they are generally useful in any case. So we are making them available on all sites. So, what's being improved? Adding a link and image in your post is no lo...

Image upload? It is no more a dialog.

@ShadowWizard Hmmm... ejects the external hard drive
Fixed!

I got backup

8:44 PM
Is it just my perception or were more of the off-topic MSE questions science-related? I'm thinking Nonte Carlo methods and whatnot.
Because if so, I wonder what that says about sciency people. Perhaps programmers are better at finding SO because they spend more time there?

Not only SO. They came from all sites. :)

@ShadowWizard Sure you do. Well, have fun blackmailing me then ;)

i've been fixing up my terminal version of se chat in the last few weeks, i gave it oneboxing and markdown support

@Shog9 image links as data URIs! ducks

which reminds me i havent been to stack apps in a while

8:47 PM
demanding 250 ParrotCoins from @Tinker

@canon that seems to massively constrain image sizes in practice

@ShadowWizard refusing your demand, filed a police report

@Shog9 good

y'know what'd be cool? If Imgur would host SVGs

8:48 PM
@Shog9 yeah, that'd be a million laughs...

vector graphics is for the weak

all these stupid little charts I post, I could be posting 'em as SVGs

@Tinkeringbell well you know what I do in police cars... ;-}

@ShadowWizard Nope. And who said there will be a police car? most likely you'll just get some kind of boring 'appear in court' order
by mail :P

@Shog9 it also doesn't have to be a real, functioning data-uri... just somewhere to dump the image data in text until it's committed.
base64'ing multi-meg images for FREEDOM

8:50 PM
sending email to police leader demanding to have cops sent and pick me up to @Tinker's lawsuit

@ShadowWizard Yeah if you behave like that, you'll end up in police cars ;)

Exactly! ;-)

@canon at that point you might as well use a slightly more efficient format
> baseunicode optimizes for screen space. It aims to help provide an extremely rudimentary file transfer method: display a text string, somehow transmit it, then decode it on the other end, such as using copy-paste between the terminal and something like a chat program. To keep the copy-pasting to a minimum, we use Unicode, which allows us to compact more information into less screen area.
now... Surely someone has put together a zalgo version of this?
That would be the ultimate solution here: embedding an image just zalgos your body text
The more images you upload, the more eldritch your text gets

would that make editing non-trivially-short posts even more laggy than it is now, or less? :P

:7338587 happy halloween to you too.

9:05 PM
XSS warning, nice :P

did we always roll-up all upvotes and downvotes on the same post into one reputation event for a single day?

usually not
did you check both "post" and "time" settings in the rep tab?

I'm not sure what I should be seeing

I thought you could always see the individual events?

Rob
What exactly are you seeing? I can still see individual events on Tim's reputation

11:36 PM
I think rene's looking at the time-based view which can indeed sum up votes without a dropdown (it seems)
I never change that setting so I can't tell if this is something new

Rob
Yes, you're on the time tab

@AndrasDeak oh, yes, that is it
didn't realized they group differently

@rene I only suggested that three times :P

It is too late for me
I should be off to bed

blame it on winter time

Rob
Both of the tabs hide information in subtly different ways.. and can lead to confusion. The only 'true' list of events is available via the API

Yeah
