@Alex people choose not to do it in their 3rd and 4th year when they have found out what it is about? sounds highly suspicious ...

user202362
I had friends back in the uni days who didn't get along with their flatmates or didn't bother to get close with people in their residential colleges.

user202362
When I shared the apartment with other college students or colleague, we got along really well. But when I had choice, I still would like to live by myself.

user202362
I mean, when you live in a doom or a shared apartment/house, you live in a more social environment - you get invited to parties/outings. You hang around with people a lot. If you are a person who likes to live around many others, it's a great way to go.

2:51 AM
Shared house can also be very cost-effective if you can trust/browbeat your housemates; I don't think I've ever lived as cheaply since.

user202362
The first time I moved into a 3 bedroom house all by myself (my parents while they were overseas), I heard some footsteps on the roof the first night. The second night, when I heard it again, I came out with a golf club in one hand and a knife in another. The third day, I found a a teddy bear hugging a heart in the letter box. Then nothing happened for the rest of the year ...

user202362
Also I had people peeping into my apartment/flat at night at two different places. I guess that's the downside of living by yourself

user202362
I guess for average peeping tom, you don't have to be hot to be a victim, you just need to be an easy target ...

Looks like a thriller movie plot

I saw Oded nuked them, so I assume he looked at it :)

Yup, all gone. Thanks @Oded!

Yeah - late night fun last night.

I know the site mods can handle that too, but being small site with potential for big damage, I asked the "heavy guns" here.... :)
Think I remember a case when spammers put their spam as HNQ with a big sockpuppet ring...
@YvetteColomb still not getting you.... SE android app (and iOS app as well) is not open source, and even if it was, I'm not android developer. And even if I was, not sure I could do better job than the developer who worked on it, but at least I would be responsive and not ignoring everything.

Can you do something with this person. suggesting edits which wrap keys to kbd tag

3:10 PM
One edit looks good to me (the first one from him) and I accepted it. Then there was a flood

Sure, just flag one of their posts linking to a few of the suggestions and explain the issue. I'll take care

@SagarV You should be using flags for this, not hunting down a mod in chat

type slower @BhargavRao
:P

type faster ;)

A mod flag may take much time. But if I inform it (or) inform it and then flag, the action will be faster

How Fog Creek Got Started: an interesting interview with Joel about his early days (2000-).

/ CC @Andy @JourneymanGeek

@SagarV not really true
and a flag means some mod rather than a specific mod will handle it

If you flag, 22 others will see it

which is handy since most mods have day jobs outside SE

3:14 PM
@JourneymanGeek lies all LIES

@bluefeet >_>
CMs don't count? ;p

@JourneymanGeek but I think the case for SO is different. in SO, some tags alone getting more questions in a day than total questions appear in SU in a week

user315433
@Alex Well, not really an interview. A story told mostly by Joel, with a few remarks by Michael Pryor.

@SagarV the system is there for a reason

already flagged :)

3:17 PM
@SagarV it's similar to pinging a dev in chat. It's best to follow the standard procedure via flags then it's likely one of 22 will see the issue.

and its PRECISELY cause of the sheer quantity of posts that flagging, not pinging is preferred
UNLESS its a time sensitive thing

(which this isn't)

@Andy as most things aren't

I'd also love to understand why you think the thing you have happened to notice should take precedence over the things other people have noticed (i.e. you pinging a mod in chat vs using the standard way of doing things).
In other words - why should these things be handled faster for you?

Very pretty please....
@YvetteColomb sure you have!

So, a candidate's activity on meta.SO is apparently a factor in these elections
I wonder whether I'm considered active on meta.SO
casually, at least... I suspect

user315433
@canon It's more of a factor early in primaries, when the meta regulars are the first to vote. Later on, "normal" SO users join the process.

user315433
Meanwhile esSO also went into primary round: 11 candidates, although just 2 of them have CS of 20 or more (and those two have 37). Somehow, users like Mariano and Luiggi Mendoza J decided not to run...

Q: Answering a XY problem that goes beyond programming but more a management issue

user0042I've been answering this particular question Pc Lint, how to suppress err 613(Possible use of null ponter) for class with init() with something the OP certainly didn't like to see. The problem seems to be of XY nature, and boils down to get the management involved to solve it. Just suppressing...

Sorry if I'm going to bother anyone here, I'm new.
Good evening/morning 1st of course!
@rene We met at that question already.

yes. It probably is the management concern that people don't deem relevant

@rene But in practice it's relevant all the time?

I don't confuse what management does/want with my coding practices. Issues with management is NOT something we discuss on SO or its meta.

Why should the management invest money and time to install a SCA tool and allow the developers just to circumvent it?

I dunno, ask the managers or developers
The ethical aspects should be discussed at The Workplace.se, assuming they take that kind of questions

8:48 PM
@rene I don't believe they would appreciate that (I was involved in establishing such techniques a lot BTW).
OK I see. May be bringing that to Meta SO was the wrong place.

@user0042 Kinda seems like a fairly rare situation. It's hard to create general guidance for a problem that likely will need to be addressed individually in the future anyway.

@user0042 you can't fix company culture and discussing it on MSO is not the best place IMO.

@JonEricson It's not that rare as you might think. I had to struggle a lot with that formerly.
@rene Agreed.

@JonEricson I've never really been a fan of "Seems like a rare situation". If a situation is rare, it only makes finding an acceptable solution or advice more difficult

@user0042 I mean rare in the sense that there probably aren't a lot of questions on SO that fit the pattern. (But now that you mention it, I don't know for sure how this question is different than any other XY question.)

8:52 PM
@JonEricson Oh, that makes more sense

I should probably delete my question at MSO. I'll try with The Workplace SE. It's still interesting in general.

aww... bullied

@Alex didn't you had an analysis on one of the elections with only two seats how/if your 3rd vote mattered? Was there a strategy to follow or not?
@user0042 lol on the 1st comment ...

@rene Yeah! Bleh ...

9:15 PM
I don't have the rep to downvote on workplace.SE

@rene It's not only that people's dishes seem to have steep horizons, but they vegetate in bowls actually :-P
@canon Can you explain further why you want to do so?

user315433
9:38 PM
@rene The third vote matters when either (a) both #1 and #2 are eliminated; or (b) one of them is eliminated and the other is assured of winning.

user315433
I don't think the strategy changes much compared to 3 winners.

user315433
On SO, it's rare that someone is such an obvious winner that you'd want to move your support to other candidates to avoid wasting ~50% vote on #1.

user315433
Questions tagged [website] and nothing else tend to be ... special.
