Why is there no How to comment page, similar to How to Ask and How to Answer?

Rob
Because comments are transient and not really part of how the site operates
There aren't really any rules to commenting

user315433
12:31 AM
Yes, let's keep repeating "comments are transient" in the face of ever growing pile (54 million comments)

user315433
There's an extensive guide to moderating comments but it's more of an "ambulance" thing rather than "fence".

user315433
I just published 35 categories of Stack Overflow comments. Number 18 will shock you!

user315433

My OmniFocus notification bubble says 4, not 13.
I am happy.
@zaq fence? You mean great wall?

Just for the heck of it... Hot network question clicks to/from sites with more than 50 clicks in the last 90 days:

That's… useless.
Make a matrix or something.

user202362
how to represent a 4d world on a 2d screen

user315433
I can't read the labels. :(

user202362
when looking back, future people who will be using 3d or 4d (3d + time dimension) representations of the world are going to look back and mocking us and comment 'what? those dumb asses and their backward 2d pictures ... trillions of those 2d pictures'

user315433
Is there "Stack Exchange" at the end of site names? API began to return it with most site names recently, so I had to add a replacement step to some scripts.

user315433

Math doesn't seem as attractive as Workplace, WB, or Academia.

It's either too real, or too complex

user315433
@bjb568 I don't think the 150 by 150 matrix would be any more readable.

user315433
The chart is okay for determining the few biggest routes. Maybe truncating small numbers down to 0 would help readability.

user202362
better way to represent it: 3d rotatable global, you can rotate it and click on the node in the front, then corresponding links and nodes will be lighten up

@Shog9 do you have totals of how many visits each site gets from HNQ? (from any site)

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ sure
post meta question
@zaq there's a Name column and a ShortName column internally; I use the ShortName column, because... sanity

@Shog9 cool, will do in a bit

user315433
2:25 AM
Sanity is overrated.

Through sophisticated template and macro hacks, it is use if (a in b) { as valid and just-as-fast code.
There is an API for defining your own operators too.

user315433
wingding discovered sites beyond SO... I blame HNQ.

how is it that a whopping 42 minutes have passed and the holy and fast moderation system of SE has not already deleted that?
why isn't there a vote to nuke option /s

user315433
The site is Biology, not SO. Much less traffic, and fewer mods. Most importantly, no BiologyCVR.

user315433
@noɥʇʎԀʎzɐɹƆ There is, rude/abusive

2:32 AM
shouldn't rude/abusive go to a single centralized review queue? The different site's rude/abusive aren't all that different.
There is charcoal HQ

user315433
CHQ does not have enough firepower to nuke posts instantly, like SOCVR does.

user315433
As for centralized handling of red flags... Tim Post occasionally floated the idea, but it has to be lower priority than fixing a bunch of broken stuff.

true
@zaq wait wingding is blacklisted?

user315433
If you dump 325 offensive/abusive posts, your username will be blacklisted too....

why is that not autobanned yet?
arqade has very low traffic
less than PPCG

user315433
2:39 AM
If this was blocked as a username, they'd pick another one, which would make the posts more difficult to detect. Nonzero work, negative gain.

user315433
That's the problem with blocks built into UI: they pretty much tell spammers and abusive users what to avoid.

@zaq Why spam on SE anyways? It's not profitable. The flag and close system is just too swift.
SE is in my belief the most (well) moderated site ever.

user315433
I don't think anyone pays specifically for spamming SE. They pay for spamming forums and blogs in general. Those who are paid to post spam may have thousands of targets, and don't spend much time analyzing which ones are better in removing spam.

@zaq but they have to spend time customizing for each site, don't they?

user315433
Yes, but once it's done, they keep rolling. It's not like they (the posters) care if the spam stays.

2:51 AM
@zaq Except when their bot breaks down because of it...

user315433
They did take notice of Meta.SE block (rep >= 2 requirement) and never came back... at least not in the same numbers as before.

user315433

user315433

@zaq Yeah, I typically try to avoid it because otherwise it's notification spam and/or "why did you invite me here?" But if you don't mind...

user315433
Nice. I would want to scroll it down a little more, to div class="review-bar" but it's a class for some unclear reason...

Doesn't matter, just need to let the browser finish processing the message or the new task won't be loaded yet.
0 should also work

user315433
Yeah, because 1ms is like doubling the time I take to review...

was thinking... does anyone ever considered making a router which admin features are only accessible from a system plugged in a specific Ethernet port on the router?

@Derpy isn't that a thing that's more common in non-consumer hardware? Like those big ass switches where you need to plug your laptop into some console port. I dunno, I pick up some things from friends who are in that business but I forget most of the details :D

Oh, I was just wondering. Seems something that would be pretty easy to do but also would offer a pretty big security return value

Maybe custom firmware out there has that option. Most consumer routers are intentionally insecure.
@Bart do you know if there's an English version of "zo lek als een zeef"?

"Leaks like a sieve"
really just a literal translation

oh :)

12:23 PM
Of course they stole it from us
:p

@Stijn actually, I didn't mean a firmware block. I meant an hardware one. I was thinking of a router where there is a configuration port (maybe an usb one) and that is the only port that offer access to the configuration.
The ethernet ones are locked out at hardware level (difficult to explain since I don't really know what components physically make up a router, but I would expect that there are different dedicated hardware components and the one connected to the ethernet output can only read from the internal memory but cannot write because it lacks the physical ability to do so)
will have to look.
Seems cisco may have something similar. Google reports something about a "console port" which seems to match your description @Stijn

1:14 PM
I just randomly remembered something, what ever happened to that user who posted a daily album/song/playlist to listen to, here in chat?
Anyway, if any of you like Bonobo, a new album was released: open.spotify.com/album/2T64N96AVfsrRFJCUXQEoZ

@Stijn GnomeSlice?

@rene yes!
I'd totally forgotten their name :p

They are still active but might have left the Tavern when it became more like a dumpbin for Smokey.

I miss their daily "listenings"

I'm not sure how spotify works but if it as easy to post stuff like it is on Stack Overflow I guess you ears will bleed after 5 minutes?

1:24 PM
@rene you pay a monthly fee and get unlimited streaming access to a ton of music
you can also listen for free but then it has an ad every few songs

And for publishing music?

No idea how that works, but there are a number of small musicians on there that I'm aware of
so it's not limited to big record labels

OK, so it is not that open ... phheewww

Nice album @Stijn

user315433
2:21 PM
As in "I'm a coder at company X"

@ShadowWizard there's an event that fires (watch requests). This isn't necessarily 100% accurate, which is one reason why I set a 50 click threshold.

@zaq Informal

2:55 PM
@Shog9 I see. Just wondering on the technical side, guess you're checking the referer then.

@ShadowWizard no. Watch for requests posted to /gps/event when one of those links is clicked.
Every time a HNQ is clicked, there's an entry created for the source and destination sites. This is also why figuring out what was clicked is less trivial; it actually would require digging through the request logs instead of just querying this data.
So I can tell you the relative amounts of traffic each site sends / gets, but not what drives that traffic without doing considerably more work.

@Shog9 would you be so kind to pull some statistics for this? Something like: what percentage of first-time Meta posters have their question closed with This question does not appear to be about Stack Overflow ..., how many are repeat offenders, how many go on to ask good MSO questions, how many never come back
I realise it's a lot to ask :)

3:10 PM
@Stijn ...just to give you a sense of scale here

does that page include deleted questions?

@Shog9 eh, nice... what tools you use to make it?

@ShadowWizard cytoscape.js
it's pretty great
@Stijn yes

@Shog9 ok, great, thanks :)

@Shog9 eh, so you just feed it with the numbers and captions, and get such graph? Nice!

3:12 PM
@ShadowWizard pretty much. There's a little bit of tweaking you can do, and various layouts, but it does all the heavy lifting
the most impressive thing is just how much data it can handle without choking

Last question for now @Shog - you do that on a personal whim, or were you asked by the boss? ;)
@Shog9 indeed, most JS scripts tend to choke when you throw too much data on them.

@ShadowWizard HNQ came up in a discussion with moderators yesterday, so I was pulling data to inform that discussion. When it was done, I realized I'd collected enough to make a fun picture, so I did that too.
@ShadowWizard most software tends to choke when given a lot of data because most software is neither designed nor tested with a lot of data.

@rene eh, nothing happened there since @Bart's rollback, but the comment(s) also nuked. :/

lookin' at you, simple text editors that choke on large text files on a PC with 64GB of memory in 2017

@Shog9 very true. Well, hope that satisfied the moderators. :)

3:16 PM
No one is ever satisfied. It's like a prerequisite for life or something.

@Shog9 I was disappointed to find out even Notepad++ does a terrible job at that

Was the OS tested to handle malloc(60GB)?

@Shog9 worth to mention Notepad was greatly improved, since Windows 7 it can handle big files without crashing. (big, not huge)

@rene ...see, that's the start of the problem right there
"oh, I'll just allocate space for the entire file in memory, surely no one would ever open a file larger than RAM!"

@Shog while you're at such a good mood, can you please take a quick look here and see what happened? My guess is unaccept triggering before accept somehow, messing up the reputation history.

3:20 PM
And thanks for killing that good mood ...

lol
We can't have Shog happy for too long. It's just wrong.
:D

@ShadowWizard did you notice I'm behind you in the CVQ on MSE? It will take a while before I can overtake you though ...

@ShadowWizard well, of course it did
you can't have an unaccept without an accept
so there were two accepts, and one "unaccept" that came between them
the problem is, the rep from the first accept isn't actually recorded
no idea why
it'll be fixed next time his rep is recalculated

@Shog9 well, looks like the actual rep isn't affected (it's not recorded in the reputation audit, see the comments), only a bug with the history.

user315433
FR: siteName.replace(/ Stack Exchange$/, "")

3:32 PM
@ShadowWizard oh, it is affecting his reputation
the audit should be correct, but also should be showing 916 instead of 901

@Shog9 huh, whoops. Guess better not tell him so that he won't panic. lol

he already observed that and mentioned it in his comment to you?

@Shog9 nope. I reached the (wrong) conclusion that actual rep isn't affected since the audit appears fine and he believed me. (I think)

huh

Alright I'll keep an eye on it. Thank you for your advise. — MrLeeh 21 mins ago

@AaronHall still?
weren't you being rate limited yesterday too?

yargh - yes
(Works at The Crimson Permanent Assurance)

try pinging Shog or balpha, I suppose they can see what's going on

@Stijn shitload of requests from various users on his IPs
...also, you not have working websockets, @Aaron?
you appear to be polling chat, which ain't the most efficient thing around

4:56 PM
I have to use my tablet for SO chat.
SE chat works on my desktop
I don't really know what polling means.

but yeah, looks like ~ 2K users from your IP, so...
@AaronHall means, it's hitting a certain route every few seconds to see if there are new messages

you work at a university, right Aaron?
could be 2k students :)

"anything new? No, ok. Anything new? Ok. Anything new? Ok."

Hey @Shog9 since you're here, what's the likelihood of getting a couple CSS properties updated to fix a years-old layout bug?

I work at a Very Big Corporation in America.

Today's xkcd comic (Voice Commands):

I teach at Uni's sometimes...

ah ok
Maybe next step is to go to your network admin, see if they can find out who's making all those requests

I don't see any smoking guns
that is, it doesn't look like one person running a script or something

We have over 5000 Python programmers

just lots of people hitting the site a lot

5:07 PM
an unfortunate false positive then

if you're hitting this regularly, email support with the exact message and they can pass that along to SRE

5:23 PM
@Shog9 on a related note: if you can find anything that's affecting my ability to chat on SO from my desktop in the same way that I'm apparently accessing chat from SE, if you could adjust that, I would appreciate it. :)

@AaronHall what browser?

all browsers are affected - IE, FF (when it was working) and now I'm using Chrome more recently. Might be a firewall issue that I'll never get past.

@AaronHall on tablet, you using full or mobile theme?

There's an element of enterprise uncooperativeness in my situation as well. I try to use full on my tablet.
sometimes just mobile if I'm not interested in the extra info the desktop version shows.

given the polling I observed already, I'd guess firewall seems likely, but no idea why it'd affect the machines differently if both are on the same network
what browser on tablet?

5:28 PM
chrome - tablet is personal on a data plan
desktop is enterprise owned and operated.
If I go asking, they're probably more likely to shut me down on SE than fix my connectivity on SO.

yeah, no idea
I'd say watch the connections tab in dev tools on desktop & see what's failing
possible that something is stuck in a looooong timeout and mobile recovers faster than desktop, but

It reports that it's "blocked for my security" - was polling disallowed on SO?
I'm not a web guy, so I have very little idea of what I'm talking about.

@AaronHall blocked for your security sounds like it's blocked on your end
SE wouldn't block you from some of its content for your own security

@AaronHall what reports that?

The enterprise page I see when I try to go to chat.so
it's on some ad-hoc allow list - which would block me daily at first, then was working for me for a while, then it wasn't.

That's going to be your enterprise security team's firewall

right, but why aren't they blocking SE? Shog told me I'm "polling" - which probably has something to do with me going through a proxy.
If SO chat is blocking my use of a proxy, then maybe that could explain it
Maybe there's a difference in configuration that's allowing me in through SE and not SO.
again, I'm not a web or networking guy - so I'm in the dark on a lot of things.

I'm not really a networking guy but polling is basically just talking to a device and waiting for a response

more likely situation here is that there's some software actually running on your desktop that's screwing up the requests

that's conceivable - I don't have a lot of control over the software on my machine.

if there's something sending packets or scanning ports regularly that could be it. FireEye does it sometimes here on my network

@AaronHall can you check if all works when you hit this page and verify that all domains mentioned here under what else do I need are indeed reachable from your browser.

Everything now reports ok on the first page...

That was kind of expexcted, otherwise you wouldn't be able to talk here ;)

googleapis.com fails

eeww

api.recaptcha.net also reporting not found

5:58 PM
@AaronHall that means you're out of the use of jQuery ... which basically renders most of the site useless ...

well, everything seems to work.
Maybe I get an enterprise approved jquery

@AaronHall that shouldn't be a big problem, but the googleapis.com not working is a deal breaker. That should be enabled.
