I don't think anyone pays specifically for spamming SE. They pay for spamming forums and blogs in general. Those who are paid to post spam may have thousands of targets, and don't spend much time analyzing which ones are better in removing spam.

@Derpy isn't that a thing that's more common in non-consumer hardware? Like those big ass switches where you need to plug your laptop into some console port. I dunno, I pick up some things from friends who are in that business but I forget most of the details :D

Maybe custom firmware out there has that option. Most consumer routers are intentionally insecure.

@Stijn actually, I didn't mean a firmware block. I meant an hardware one. I was thinking of a router where there is a configuration port (maybe an usb one) and that is the only port that offer access to the configuration.

The ethernet ones are locked out at hardware level (difficult to explain since I don't really know what components physically make up a router, but I would expect that there are different dedicated hardware components and the one connected to the ethernet output can only read from the internal memory but cannot write because it lacks the physical ability to do so)

Every time a HNQ is clicked, there's an entry created for the source and destination sites. This is also why figuring out what was clicked is less trivial; it actually would require digging through the request logs instead of just querying this data.

So I can tell you the relative amounts of traffic each site sends / gets, but not what drives that traffic without doing considerably more work.

@Shog9 would you be so kind to pull some statistics for this? Something like: what percentage of first-time Meta posters have their question closed with This question does not appear to be about Stack Overflow ..., how many are repeat offenders, how many go on to ask good MSO questions, how many never come back

I realise it's a lot to ask :)

the most impressive thing is just how much data it can handle without choking

There's an element of enterprise uncooperativeness in my situation as well. I try to use full on my tablet.
