So I have a dictionary where keys are strings and values are lists, and the dictionary is initially empty. I add like:

if groupnum not in groups:
    groups[groupnum] = [filename]
else:
    groups[groupnum].append(filename)

Is there a way to make that a one-liner? Initialize the empty list if not present and add at once?

I think there's some wizardry in mongodb's internals that does to that neatly.

But, that only works if you're using mongodb.
