this is the worst thing I've ever created.

oh god.

:DDD

I just made the worst bootstrap site ever

Noice.

It'll have to do until I have the chance to actually make something
You ought to do a personal website, with DD up there it's certainly a relevant thing to say "HEYLOOK AT ME GIMME ALL TEH JOBZ"

12:15 AM
Yeah, I'm going to do that.

tell me when you do, so I can add it to my LOIC botnet hitlist

:o

So I spent years, literally, putting off learning Python.
I just read through the tutorial, in like an hour. And it's fucking awesome. What have I been doing with my life?
I can't believe how much time I've spent writing shell scripts.

What? Are you serious. Python is dead easy

It's SO easy.

user202362
12:20 AM
reading a tutorial != can do awesome things in python

And yet, in under two hours, I've already done awesome things with python.
Why didn't anybody tell me this?

user202362
sometimes I don't know whether people would get offended if I tell them that their standard is a bit low ...

Well it's their problem if they're offended not yours.

Oo :D

Python is meh.

12:22 AM
@bjb568 I'm offended, shut up.

JavaScript is better, but you know....

bjblang is teh best!

Can I get a VS syntax highlighter for that?

well, I haven't actually written it yet, but I will.

Anyways I had to learn it for this project, I'm working with some digital signage thing that has Python integration for content control. It's either that or VBScript.

@bjb568 Yeah it's a weird choice. Python, VBScript, or JScript (?).

@bjb568 if you do that, can you make "declaring var for every variable" a rule.

Actually, are any of you fluent with python? I have a question.

shoot

@Quill Yes

12:27 AM
So I have a dictionary where keys are strings and values are lists, and the dictionary is initially empty. I add like:
if groupnum not in groups:
    groups[groupnum] = [filename]
else:
    groups[groupnum].append(filename)
Is there a way to make that a one-liner? Initialize the empty list if not present and add at once?

a ternary statement works, but...
it'd look horrible though
It's fine as it is

Oh, something like groups[groupnum] = [filename] if groupnum not in groups else groups[groupnum].append(filename)? Yeah OK just wondering, that'd be ugly.

I think there's some wizardry in mongodb's internals that does to that neatly.
But, that only works if you're using mongodb.
Hmm… with mongodb and jQuery you can solve all the things!

you could write a helper function to make it look nicer

Maybe throw on react and ember and express and hapi and asm.js while you're at it. I have no idea what half of those are, but they are buzzwords.
@Quill bah, what is this, functional programming?

12:32 AM
That's true.
Mostly I was just curious, I'm fine with it as is.
Thanks

def method(array, key, value):
    array[key] = value if key not in array else array[key].append(value)
    return array
Curiosity is fun :)... and a bad driver

lol

Yeah I'm... super behind schedule. I haven't had any time to take interesting detours.
I'm in "oh shit" panic territory.

@bjb568 react is like node, ember is like angular, hapi looks like a node server syntatic sugar, asm.js is assembly in js
@JasonC if you need a hand at any point, feel free to ping me and I can try to help you :-)

Thanks!

12:36 AM
@Quill … I didn't want to know.

@bjb568 bjb = new Cat({wearing:["glasses"]})

Looking at the sidebar what the hell did I miss 7 hours ago?

I don't know, but I'd blame bjb

Sounds like a plan

12:40 AM
@JamesENL My poem summarizes it pretty well.

Me: "Please help." Reseller: "I can't help you but you can contact product support directly." Product Support: "I can't help you you need to go through your reseller."

@bjb568 later

Product Documentation: "ImportantFunction (p1, p2): p1 - The first parameter. p2 - The second parameter"

@JasonC reminds me of that scene in Office Space

12:55 AM
The worst thing about this is this time, it's all my fault. I had like a month to work this out.
I can't even blame anybody, not even bjb.
I can sort of blame the reseller I guess, who inexplicably used to be the CEO of said product company.
Yeah, that's what I'll do. Problem solved. Not my fault. I feel better already.

[1/2] SLC-buffered TLC NAND isn't just in SSDs any more—my testing found that the 32 GB SanDisk Ultra Dual USB Drive 3.0 has a 512 MB buffer
[2/2] Iometer testing (4 MB seq. write) confirms it. X-axis interval is 1.06 seconds per unit, Y-axis is MB/s. https://t.co/81OyQnJe9S

@anandtech @tomshardware @storagereview Even #USB flash drives can have SLC-buffered TLC NAND. https://twitter.com/bwDraco/status/689320776328187904 #FlashStorage

besides you then
I don't even know what those last words mean
!!/blame

@Quill It's Quill's fault.

5:58 AM
Smokey's right

I can only star that once, what a shame

First SSD with this technology was the Samsung SSD 840 EVO.
> The drive's TLC NAND costs less per gigabyte than the MLC flash typically used in consumer SSDs, but its write performance is somewhat compromised by the higher bit density.
> Although most of the 840 EVO's flash is configured with three bits per cell, a small slice of each die is addressed as single-bit SLC NAND. This portion of the flash is dedicated to TurboWrite, a buffering technology that caches host writes before transferring them to the drive's main storage. The SLC cache promises higher write speeds than the TLC main storage, particularly for sequential transfers.
> TurboWrite funnels all downstream traffic through the SLC cache. Writes only bypass TurboWrite if the buffer is full. When the drive is idle, cached writes are transferred out of the buffer and into the TLC NAND.

> Samsung has also launched a type of NAND that stores three bits of information per cell, with eight total voltage states. This is commonly referred to as Triple Level Cell (TLC) and was first seen in the 840 EVO Series SSDs
right okay
@JamesENL I'll ask ProgramFox later whether we can set that as the default value

TLC NAND has poor endurance (good for only ~1000 write cycles per block), but more critically in consumer use cases, it is also very slow to write.

6:03 AM
sd k

Hence, to make up for that, they use a small part of the NAND as if it were SLC, which is much faster and much more reliable.
Once this SLC buffer is full, however, writes drop to the slow speeds of the underlying TLC NAND.

why don't they just entirely switch to SLC then, instead of a little bit?

@Quill TLC stores three times as much data as SLC, which substantially reduces cost.
2-bit MLC is typical in faster flash drives and SSDs.

I see, so with SLC&TLC hybrid, you get fast speeds and large memory store

The idea is that most consumer use cases, writes only happen in small bursts, so the drive has time to flush the data in SLC to TLC. This means that the drive doesn't feel much slower than a typical midrange MLC SSD.
TLC is used mainly in low-cost flash storage devices.

6:06 AM
That makes sense

MLC NAND stores less data (2 bits per cell) but is faster and lasts longer. Most midrange and nearly all high-end SSDs use MLC NAND.
SLC is fast and has extremely high endurance (at least tens of thousands of cycles per block) but is very expensive due to its low storage density and is therefore reserved for industrial applications that need maximum reliability.
Here's a much better article on TLC NAND: anandtech.com/show/5067/understanding-tlc-nand

So… when is something going to happen with Smokey? cc @ProgramFOX

I don't know.
Go poke about it in Charcoal HQ - we haven't extensively discussed it yet, nor have we come to a consensus about it.

@Pops @Inf @Jason @jcolebrand Do you support the proposal to move Smokey replies to a new room, while still keeping it here (without replies) for users to mute if they want?

Related to ^, can someone explain what the proposal(s) are? The way the above is worded sounds very one sided

8:27 PM
@Andy 1) Do nothing (tell users to mute smokey), 2) Move smokey away fully, 3) (proposed above) move smokey replies to another room but still have the reports here (so you can mute smokey and not see anything), 4) Make a userscript or something?

For #3, is the idea that users will respond to smokey (ie. sd k) in the other room as well? Or are those the replies you speak of?

I'd just take Smokey off c.mSE completely before doing that.
^ see that and messages following. Didn't realize there was discussion here.
Also... just sayin', I'm seeing a whole uninterrupted conversation spanning several hours above.

9:42 PM
@Andy yeah, sd k would be in the other room.

@Undo As a Smokey fan I did not realize anyone could feel disturbed about, in contrast to all cats images, if you should be forced to move please ping just to follow

@Undo sure…

@bjb568 There... wasn't really any conversation at that hour...

Having crap being spewed instead isn't better.

@bjb568 Well, it depends... we're trying to make sure that false positives aren't being reported into here. Any reasons with a high false positive rate are ignored for posting in here.

@bjb568 what would the point be of having it post here still then? Can you prevent others from replying in this room?
@bjb568 neither is constant advertisement about your pet project yet it continues to happen...

10:05 PM
@hichris123 Posting true-positive crap is still posting crap.
(and most of what is posted is true positives)
@Andy The point of having it here is so that it still nudges you, if you want it to, to flag the spam. You can certainly prevent others from replying in this room by having smokey not accept responses in this room.

10:17 PM
But the responses and muscle memory when you see it is still here.
I'm not opposed to moving it, but posting it and not accepting commands for it seems to defeat the purpose

isn't it better to store credentials in environment variables?

Probably but I don't know how to do that [yet]

in .bash-rc variables, or similar?

I'll worry about security more in depth if/when this becomes more than just a project

okay, no worries.

Right now it's just for fun :)
