3:26 AM
@yellowantphil Very Roughly: AB calc is ~ the first semester of college calculus. BC ~ first two semesters of college calculus. If students do well enough on standardized tests associated to these, they can get college credit.

@yellowantphil IT'S THIS KEWL MATH THING

> WD, 40

@yellowantphil • is OPTION+8, while ° is of course OPTION+SHIFT-8. Completely sensible for the *. But OPTION+k is ˚ and OPTION+0 is º. So take your pick.

@yellowantphil It's the equivalent of a university Calc 2+3 class, I believe.

@tchrist you have an OPTION key? what’s that?

3:27 AM
@tchrist One's temperature, one's angle?

user259867
@AstroCB Calc 3 is typically multivariable in college, not included in BC.

@everyone my high school wasn’t nearly cool enough for any of that

@yellowantphil It's a thing you get when you have a superior keyboard and OS.
@yellowantphil it sukd

@bjb568 \N{BULLET} is OPTION+8, while \N{DEGREE SIGN} is of course OPTION+SHIFT-8. Completely sensible for the *. But OPTION+k is \N{RING ABOVE} and OPTION+0 is \N{MASCULINE ORDINAL INDICATOR}. So take your pick.

@bjb568 what’s so bad about AltGr? and what OS is superior to Linux?

3:28 AM

so it’s just alt

@tchrist masculine ordinal indicator… huh
@yellowantphil except it's better.

@bjb568 do you also have Alt?

no unless you look really close

@bjb568 The girly one is OPTION+9: ª

3:28 AM
haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa I feel superior. I think. Wait, I don’t.
xmodmap lets me map key, shift+key, altgr+key, shift+altgr+key

@pizza Huh – I'm pretty sure AB is 1+2 and I thought there was some overlap. My school somewhat controversially has us take AB as juniors and BC as seniors despite the overlap.

@bjb568 yeah but how do you type alt instead of option?

@AstroCB wot

We don’t need no stinkin’ alt greeks, alt geeks, nor any related hybrids.

3:29 AM
@yellowantphil you can't

how many letters can you map to one key?

can Windows users not just get a font for this stuff? it’s tragic

I don’t think Chromium on Linux makes much effort at supporting emoji. It just passes most things off to the font
don’t know if it’s different on Windows

I guess changing the chat font should cut it, but I'm not sure what to

you need lots of fonts. No single font will have all the nonsense in this chat
your OS or browser or something has to be able to pick fonts appropriate for each character

@yellowantphil depending on how it is compiled, the x server may manage the fonts

@Braiam I feel like fontconfig manages fonts for me, but I don’t know. Maybe it’s the x server
I tried to learn about that stuff but didn’t have much luck

@bjb568 I edited the three-dimensional solid in afterward, so that probably didn't help the clarity.

@pizza because they're undocumented and with rather unintuitive expected arguments.

Mar 19 at 2:30, by AstroCB
I've been trying to figure it out for an hour; it seems like they add a keyboardShortcuts function to the StackExchange object that can be modified, but when I access it, there's nothing in the function.
Turns out it's not a function, but I'll leave the rest of the saga for you in the transcript.

"because they're undocumented and with rather unintuitive expected arguments." seems like pretty standard computing foo to me...

Trying to listen to their websockets is a bit tricky too. And I'm not even mentioning that site ID thing that can only be hardcoded or scraped off the top bar
The easier way is to open a new connection to their webserver, send "155-questions-active" there (where 155 stands for "the whole network"), and then listen.

4:35 AM

To decode the websocket data, you parse it as JSON. If action is hb, you must respond with hb (not {action:"hb"}). Else if action is 155-questions-active then you parse data as JSON (again!) and use it.

4:37 AM
@JanDvorak Beautiful
!xkcd latest

If you're listening to multiple site updates (because the network data doesn't contain everything), parsing the action and reverse-lookup the action ID is the only way to determine which site a question comes from.
@AstroCB Stop talking over me and just open the damn site!!!

@JanDvorak I interrupted an inspiring monologue with insipid xkcd.

"doesn't contain everything" isn't very accurate. It contains the same data in a different format, but where the network socket just flat out drops frames, the per-site socket at least sends malformed frames so that I know which question IDs I've lost.

4:41 AM

This would have been more ironic if bots were still in the description.

Oh man.

Morning!

4:50 AM
@FélixGagnon-Grenier oh, and "different format" means HTML. So you have to: send a magic incantation to the socket server, then parse the response as JSON, verify the socket channel matches, parse the data as JSON again, then parse the HTML inside the data into a DOM, and then scrape that as a regular front page list item. Lovely API, isn't it?

"That applies to... almost everything. Probably including this feature-request. Rare indeed is the post that can't use a bit of editing. I don't think you're complaining that too few mostly-understandable questions are ending up triaged as "Should be Improved" right now." That's an interesting point. Following that, I'd think that the top group of questions, rather than the middle group should go to H&I; middle needs significant editing which isn't well suited for a queue, bottom needs to be closed and possibly deleted. — bjb568 37 secs ago

@Shog9 I'm joking, but my dryest of dry cynical sarcasm doesn't carry too well in text.

Yes, identify good questions -> improve them in queue -> feature on front page
Or, identify bad questions -> close them -> delete them after inactivity

let's start with questions that never got into review in the first place
a "This question is too good to be reviewed" review queue
We'll put only answered questions with lots of upvotes in it.

Or for the really rare case, identify bad questions -> close them -> op edits -> start over

Maybe former mod-disputed spam flags as a review topic?

@bjb568 That was... really fast. It's only 05:00 UTC!

4:58 AM
@Shog9 How can a question be too good to be reviewed?

@Shog9 How about just raise a nothing is wrong flag on it?

@bjb568: if it's wasting time that could be spent fixing other posts, then it's "too good to be reviewed".

@bjb568 lots of questions don't get reviewed
no one flags them. No one votes to close them. No one edits them.

The best ones are the ones that need to be polished into gems. The bad ones… meh, who cares how many grey rocks we have?
