I was getting downvoted on the linked question, that would have lead me to a question ban so I had to delete the question. I wanted to ask for an advice to martin, but I prefer to avoid speaking here for reason that you already know.
@Revious so what you expect exactly? Anyway, the question ban is a pit you dug with open eyes this time, posting something that you knew very well might get many downvotes. I'm not saying you should avoid posting questions on Meta, but try and ask things that you at least know won't get negative opinions.
@ShadowWizard: When opening that question I had considered people could downvote it. But I opened it for a valid reason. I was absolutely not sure of getting downvotes at the beginning.
if you think I deserved that downvotes please say it. I was simply trying to say that there can be a valid alternative to the suspension, which is actually exponential growing. Why I should got downvoted for that?

I apparently failed too many First Post-review audits, and have been banned for two days.
I would like to have a list of audits I failed, so I can try and find some pattern in what I'm doing wrong.

on that section moderators asked me to stop opening further questions and edit my old one. I stopped for an entire week. I asked for suggestion on how to improve the quality of the questions, and I did. I got a better reputation in doing that. I did no polemic at all, never.

@Revious You really should take it up to the moderators of that site, I can't judge the quality of your questions there. So when you're out of suspension go to their chat and discuss it with the moderators, or raise a meta question (per site meta, not the general Meta)

The question is: I think the quality of my question was low (since I'm not a psychologist) and yesterday I made a stupid mistake.. I've opened 5 questions in an evening.. This probably didn't like to the moderator there..

@Revious it's not my place to judge the moderators of that site. I can't see your deleted questions there and don't know what they told you. Like I said in the very beginning, if you feel like it's wrong contact the team and explain.
Why is there such general confusion about how NullPointerException's work in Java? Every time a question comes up, not only does the question itself show general confusion, but it is met with a barrage of answers and comments that are complete nonsense.
It's so strange to me; there's got to be some fundamental source for systemic confusion like that.
It it the name, "NullPointerException" itself? The documentation of it? The documentation is clear. Is there a conspiracy in the education system to create confusion around this?
@rene We've got one for Java too. But we don't have a canonical question for, e.g., "Why does the line '======24_24_24fi0if2fi0==++===;' cause a compiler error?", because we don't need it. I wonder why NPE's are such a specific misunderstood case.
And wth am I ranting about this in here for anyways, isn't there a Java chat room somewhere? This whole newfangled chat thing... let's see, I'm sure there's a lobby around here somewhere.
@JasonC NullPointerException in all languages is a very "generic" error and very specific. All it means "something is null", and nothing more than that. Guess that's the reason.

@ShadowWizard It's interesting that you say that. Because "something is null" isn't actually the correct description, but it is precisely that assumed description that causes the confusion to begin with. It's gotta be in the name!

@JasonC I guess so. From my experience, one or two downvotes, no comments, and no upvotes means "This isn't a great question, but I'm lazy so I won't bother commenting on it or closing it."
@ShadowWizard For example: Object c = null;. Something is null, but there's certainly no NPE on that line. Yet if you look at related questions, comments, and answers, that possibility is frequently suggested as the cause of an NPE.
@JasonC sorry not sure I follow. Of course no error when setting something to null, but when trying to access it e.g. c.Print("hello world, Tavern is cool") then you will get the dreaded NPE exception.
And then people will ask "Show code where you declare and assign c" and then all will be clear. :)

@ShadowWizard Yes. Of course. But when somebody says "I receive an NPE on the line 'Object c = array[i]' and I know that 'array' is not null" (and we can see from their code that their claim array != null is true), then "perhaps 'array' contains null elements" is not a valid answer, even though it's an incredibly common answer. See what I mean?
@ShadowWizard Or when somebody asks, "I receive an NPE on 'String s = x.getString()', here is my implementation of 'getString()' and it never returns null, as you can see; what is going on?" Then they have clearly missed that "x" might be null and instead interpreted the NPE as somehow related to 'getString()'s return value, which it can't be, regardless of "x". The confusion is there.
@Stijn VS is great; and its not really about people having trouble finding the source (although that is one of the symptoms of the confusion), it's about a general tendency to not know what an NPE means, and it's weirdly unique to NPE's.
I also don't see what there is to be confused about, but the confusion is so common.
Nobody misunderstands, for example, "FileNotFoundException" in the same way.
@JasonC I guess the problem then is teachers not explaining NPEs, or even explaining debugging techniques at all. Actually now I think of it, the 4 programming teachers I had never did explain those things.
@Stijn That's gotta be it... I don't remember getting much in the way of debugging, etc., in the few courses I took either, now that I think about it. It was always "Here is your assignment, make it work."
I wonder why that's such a common missed topic, though, it's fundamental even for the most basic levels of education.
Maybe it's only actually a missed topic in the minority of cases, but it just seems more common because, of course, those are the only students that end up asking questions on the internet. I guess (number of people that are confused about NPE's on SO) / (total number of students in a programming class in the world) is quite small.

I think it could be a more useful compromise.. also because the suspension was not caused by a "strong" reason
also other high-rep guys there were saying of these questions: "I just checked them, and they have improved indeed over your last ones. But I also notice the motivation is still missing entirely in all of them."

Alternative restrictive measure to suspension up vote -9 down vote favorite Actually there are two kind of restrictive measure:
One is automatic and is going to be lifted automatically as well after the user contributes to the community. The second (timed suspension) is issued by moderators and totally inhibit the user. Do you think it would be a good idea to allow moderators to choose between timed suspension and casting a question ban? (I mean question ban until some reputation recovery)?

@Revious I have no idea. If you can't reach an agreement with the mods, you can contact the community team. There are no guaranteed results when you do that. It's your decision.
@JanDvorak, @AnnaLear: consider that it's not the single episode.. I try to summarize: A mod suspend me for low contributions while (every high rep members there) are writing that I've been strongly collaborative and so on..

The system works, yes.. I strongly believe that it's effective, but I think it would deserve to wonder if it can be less drastic and more respectful of feelings.

@JanDvorak yes of course, even high rep user can suddenly start posting very low quality posts and not stop so since post ban won't be triggered, the only way to stop him is suspension.
(Not saying it's justified in case of Sam, just generally speaking)
