P.SE had a bit of a troll earlier today and I suspect he's back after getting around the spam ram ip block. Offensive flags would be appreciated programmers.stackexchange.com/questions/122009/… -- and if any CMs could watch until the european mods wake up it would likely be appreciated too.

@MichaelT Nuked.

user213963
@hichris123 Thank you. Though I suspect he'll be back. We had 4x rounds of the same troll (not necessarily this one, but I'd be surprised if not) earlier today where each had a flagged, down voted, deleted answer before the mod nuked the account. It wasn't until then that the automated system started blocking that IP.

Tell me if you need flags...

user213963
Its 22:30 here... and I'm about to head to sleep... I was hoping that some pacific based community managers might just check in from time to time to make sure nothing is amiss until the european mods and active users woke up and were able to deal with them promptly without external help.

user213963
Though thank you muchly for that flag and any others that may show up later this evening.

3:37 AM
I love flags. :P

Hello Tavern! I just noticed I got serially downvoted. Kinda weird, thoughts?

Some smartypants trying to avoid the 3am reversal script, I see. I wouldn't worry - the 3am script will just get 'em tomorrow. (Caution: I'm probably wrong.)

Q: How to delete Stack over Flow account since I cant find delete button in edit profile?

RahaStrongly wants to delete my account on Stack Over Flow, reasons: ppl in Stackoverflow comes to judge others (voting) without technical answering the question. I searched for Delete button but didn find it in editing profile. Is there any way to free my email from Stack over flow account? Note: ...

We gave him the FAQ and the help center, and he's still complaining...

Is there an RTFM comment for duplicates & the help center? :P

four downvotes all at the same time on different things.

That should be caught with the 3 am script...

Me?
What's the 3 am script?

The reversal I mean.

@AaronHall The thing that runs every day and undoes serial votes.

The 3 am script reverses serial voting.

4:03 AM
It usually runs at UTC 03:00, hence "3am script".

ah, what's the algo?

@AaronHall Trade secret, to prevent exploitation. Or something.

Sometimes I use my votes all at once. Usually up, though.

@Robert got ur answer? :D — Raha 37 secs ago

Cool
I have friends here and I've tried to warn them not to serial vote on me.
I was hoping for unsung hero, and my last accept was someone who didn't have the rep to vote, so I figured it was safe. Nope. Someone came along later and voted it.

Well, two of the questions are from people with SO profiles that are at least a few months old, so probably question ban circumvention on those...

@ShadowWizard can you have a look at this meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/226819/…
@ShadowWizard Might be but I would assume a naive user for now...

Morning everypony

@rene sorry but I'm not in favor of things like "downvote squad" or "downvote wagon". Anyway not relevant, if the question will be deleted all answers will be deleted as well.

Yeah, I was hoping you could start a delete on the question if you find that appropiate to do...

@rene more than that, I think we (well, I wasn't part of that personally) just caused answer ban on otherwise helpful and long time user. Not a smart move if you ask me.

10:14 AM
@SuhosinPony Morning

He did not deserve it.

OK

morning all

Morning @mehow and @SuhosinPony

For what it's worth, voted to delete the question, hopefully answers deleted indirectly won't cause a ban. We'll see...

10:16 AM
@ShadowWizard I don't know if that's so bad, stackoverflow.com/questions/6693499/… doesn't really qualify as an answer for example.

anyone can spare a close vote on this . it is nearly an exact duplicate of yesterdays , now deleted,, question
morning @Stijn

@ShadowWizard I removed the comments on the meta question and left a comment on the answer for the OP

@Stijn still, ban hammer isn't justified. I fear we caused a bad meta effect on this one.

@mehow Voted. I remember the question, it now has a bunch of irrelevant info added but indeed still no effort shown for the actual problem.

Question for all: the xpath node selector sintax to select the first node is something like ........node[attrib='foo'][1] right?

10:19 AM
@mehow done

the node counter starts from 1 right?
then WHY wix toolset uses an implementation that starts from 0???

thanks @Stijn and @rene

@SPArchaeologist Voting to close as off topic: "programming questions are off topic in the Tavern. Please get a beer and relax". :D

@ShadowWizard even rhetorical ranting ones? ^_^

@SPArchaeologist makes you wonder what else they implemented differently.

10:22 AM
@SPArchaeologist rhetorical?! xpath is anything but rhetorical ;)

@Stijn I fear I will discover it soon
@ShadowWizard xpath isn't but the question is. I actually know the answer. They receive a monthly fee to do that from some multinational pharmaceutics company. They know that doing so will increase the sales of Malox and other related product.

@SuhosinPony I was thinking... About the whole "Went north to fetch the southern birds" incident in winter wrap up... did they send someone else to help or should we assume that - since in the episode end you can clearly see Derpy arrive with all the birds - she was the only one who in the end managed to complete her mission on her own without help?

@michaelb958 try to refresh, clear cache and try again. If still no luck it means glitch in the server side caching, it will resolve itself at some point.

@ShadowWizard It was caching; all fixed now.

@SPArchaeologist Maybe she flew all the way around Equestria?
:D

@SuhosinPony Is that planet ever spherical? for what we know it may be flat ^_^

I assume so
Though it could be flat which would explain the non natural night/day and season cycles.

Assumption is the mother of all $$#@

@SuhosinPony THE SEASON!!! I forgot that. Ok, now all is clear: Equestria is actually an island in the Grand Blue.
That would also explain how Fluttershy can use haki.

11:57 AM
@SPArchaeologist Equestria is an island

@SuhosinPony I was referencing to One Piece. You see, many islands in the Grand Blue have a fixed climate/season. You could find islands where it is forever winter, others stuck on spring and so on...

Q: I don't understand why i get blocked by this users

user3458635I get blocked because these users (mehow, Stijn, rene, Suhosin Pony, M42) have voted me negative several times without a clear reason. I want to understand why?

@SuhosinPony Why??? for one, including the screens in the closed question would help. Does he really hope I want to follow the link to imagizer? O_o

@Doorknob thank you

@Stijn left a comment as well...

I never know what to post on meta :P I have like 0 rep.

@rene Yeah I saw. I don't like being called out like this, but I don't think I made a mistake voting to close the questions.

You could post about that...

> my teacher in my learning is not available and strictly says all the time "You need to try and find the solution first before coming to me."

@Stijn Agree, I feel the same. I assume ShadowWizard will disagree with me... :-)

err, aren't we like that too?

@SuhosinPony I am waiting for an excuse to post other Unicorn-tagged questions on meta... If they will make the error to have a pony related joke on April, 1 this year prepare for a flood

@rene Now you remembered me that scene in Super Paper Mario.

Do I have to be sorry for that?

Why this not "primarily opinion based"?

it was a funny game, so no need to be sorry

Q: PHP OOP different ways to access methods

MaxI have seen that there are two different ways to access methods within a class. Is there any advantages and disadvantages? Why use one not the other? $a = new A(); $a->foo(); A::foo();

@SPArchaeologist phew

I just cast a close vote because it seems opinion based to me, but if I'm wrong, please tell me.

@ColeJohnson Your answer to that is by no means opinion based.

@ColeJohnson The question appears like that, but that's caused by a lack of knowledge.
As shown by your answer, it's not an opinion based question.

It is not a great question but the answer would not be based on an opinion but on how instance and static methods work which is described in the php manual....oh wait...

1:04 PM
@rene oh wait?
@Stijin then could the question be fixed up?

@ColeJohnson Oh, there is a definitve reference on how php syntax should work? ;-)

@Cole Perhaps the question could be changed to this: I have seen that there are two different ways to access methods within a class. Are there any differences in behaviour, or are they purely alternative syntaxes for the same action?

I think this question is perfectly legit... — SLC 2 mins ago

@Stijn That is perfect

I realize I may have pissed some people off but this guys is taking it to the next level.. can I ask a mod to sort out the comments section under the answer?

He simply feels like a victim of a horrible crime. Probably best to ignore him.

yep
is there a change that the diamond mods can see deleted comments?

@Qantas94Heavy I've tried improving that question but on second thought my edit was probably wrong. But it's a bad question as it is right now.

Q: Probability that random moves in the game 2048 will win

N. OwadI have recently played the game 2048, created by Gabriele Cirulli, which is fun. I suggest trying if you have not. But my brother posed this question to me about the game: If he were to write a script that made random moves in the game 2048, what is the probability that it would win the game?...

shouldn't we just forget that "game" and move on?

At the beginning, I like to just go: left, up, right, down repeatedly
When playing on my phone, it makes a square in swipes.
Then when I get near losing, I'll begin to play normally

@SPA First time I played the game I was happy my score went over 2048. Then I realised that wasn't the goal of the game :(

It's addicting for sure, but it's not gonna get as popular as Flappy Bird did.
@Stijn really? I thought I was the only one

go, have fun with this then
just remembered the name

Does anyone know of a text based serialization format that supports references?
3
Q: Are references possible in JSON?

Rajagopal 웃Is it possible to assign references to objects in JSON? I have data that looks like this: [{ name:"name", Parent:[{ name:"parentName" Parent:[{ .....//and so on }] }] }] I need to traverse it in JavaScript and also change the person's name. How can I do this?

I knew that it was called pearls something.

See comments on my answer by HLL

The top voted answer to that 2048 question has one if it's earliest assumptions incorrect, right? "You will have to make at least 2048 moves to get to the 2048 tile (follows from previous point)."

At least it sounds like he wants text based on the fact that he's talking on a JSON quesion
If the "new" tiles are always 2 or 4...
Let's assume they're always 2
You make one move, now you have 4 and 2
Make another, now you have 4 and 4
And 2. Make another and you have 8 and 4
So wouldn't it be 1024?

1:52 PM
ok, I have stuck 3 people playing on the first version of pearls..... little problem... the first version isn't beatable :P
let's see how long it takes them to get that....

That's sort of what I was thinking. Granted, not every move has to combine a tile, @Cole. But I think it's still less than 2048 moves.

@jadarnel27 not to mention the fact that you can combine more than one "group" in one move
I guess seeing as 2048 is open source, we could make it make a perfect game where it only placed 2s (or maybe just 4s) exactly where it would help us
Or we click where the 2 (or 4) would go and it places it there.
Then we just play (somewhat) carefully, and count the moves.
And record it for citations sake

and now they are stuck, forever, on pearls before swine 3
I know that I should tell them that it is possible to make him do the first move if you want
but it is funnier to see them suffer in an unwinnable situation :P

2:09 PM
@SPArch You're an odd one.

@jadarnel27 nope, just split personality. I can switch from Kira to Devilman to Kind mode in 10 seconds flat

steam says I've spent 8404 hours but since they've only been recording hours since like 2009 it's got to be much higher than that

Steam says 3998,7 hours but I've played a lot of non-steam games

Sorry for interrupting, I have a quick question about reaching people on stack if anyone can help... I know it's possible to message someone by using @ in chat but does it work for whoever or does the person need to have been in chat recently?

The person needs to be in the chat
Moderators and super-ping from chat though
If you find a room they're in, you can enter the room and should be able to invite them to another room, if the matter doesn't fit the room

@3ventic it also works if the person is not in the room right now, we did a test recently and it works.

Well, recently been in the room anyway

Isn't Adel a female's name?

@ShadowWizard Would not be possible for me. I already have an account almost everywhere :D

@TimWolla only 50, you have more than 50 more to go ;)

@ShadowWizard We have a male singer named Adel here in Germany.
@ShadowWizard Actually I avoid some sites (namely the ones about religion and similar) by intent.

> Adel (also transliterated as Adil, Arabic: عادل‎) is an Arabic male name that is derived from the Arabic word Adl, which means fairness and justice. It is commonly used in Muslim countries, and sometimes used by Coptic Christians throughout the Middle East. It is not to be confused with the similar female name Adele, which has a different pronunciation, although rarely it may appear without the "e" on the end.

Suppose a tag is going to be removed, would you before that retag the questions who would become untagged edit with a better tag?

4:27 PM
@rene removed how? but generally speaking then yes, it's never a good idea to leave question untagged.

@ShadowWizard I have this in the context of this remove request
There are simply too much questions tagged with to cleanup

@rene yes, if mod is going to nuke the tag with a power tool then we better manually retag those 13

Any tag suggestion for this: stackoverflow.com/questions/16033812/…

@rene What about ?

Hmmm, I was more hoping for text-editing or somethig like that...
Maybe I should just close vote it becuase it is off-topic here?

4:44 PM
Tough one. The question is basically about parsing a custom data format. Unix just happens to have a tool (join) that does exactly what OP wants.

@Stijn Yeah, that is in the answer but het claims that didn't work so...
I tagged with unix but that doesn't seem right

Hey everyone!
Can someone tell me whether my recent edit here was correct?

@AmalMurali seems reasonable. hard to tell what the OP wanted, exactly, but considering that the answer got accepted...

Yep. As I state in a comment here:
The original question isn't clear. I thought the OP wanted to extract the part shown. Now that this answer is accepted, I think what you said is actually correct. I'll edit the question. — Amal Murali 21 mins ago
"Maybe you have some idea how to cut this part ?" — What do you understand from this sentence? I thought the OP was trying to extract something out of something. Would like to know your thoughts too

@AmalMurali I have to assume eveybody fluent in php knows what BBCode links are, I don't

@TGMCians: Close-vote worthy question, IMO

So that might need some rewording if I needed to find that answer

@rene: Ah. DIdn't think of that possibility while making the edit. Can you some up with a better phrasing? Basically the OP wants to extract everything that's not inside [link]...[/link].

@TGMCians It can't be closed because it has a bounty, flag it as other because it is a tool recommendation

yes

6:47 PM
@AmalMurali inside tags with brackets?
I'm not a native speaker so I'm not the best person to ask to reword stuff...

@rene: Given a string of the form foo bar [link] ... [/link] baz bak, he wants to extract foo bar baz bak from it.

Yeah, that would do
