12:00 AM
GO!

@LowerClassOverflowian ...to what?

New Day
have some new close votes to use : )

12:25 AM
Ok, done with my 40 reviews.

12:46 AM
"If an @-notify happens in a conversation, and nobody is there to be notified by it, is there a ping?"

@michaelb958 Do you mean, the person your replied to isn't in the room, or possibly even logged out of SE?

@LowerClassOverflowian No, I'm just in a philosophical mood.

Oh. I would think that someone in the NSA would hear the ping noise. So yes, the ping always happens.

Laszlo PappIf you go to Settings -> Edit Current Profile -> Keyboard, you can select the bindings as follows:

strange, the image in my answer got broken for some reason without any edit. :( What can cause that?
oh, it might be just very slow Stack Overflow loading due to the operation changes today....
Stack Overflow became very slow today. :/

what operation changes?

Stack Overflow became read-only today, and then very slow afterwards in general.

@LaszloPapp So in the Low Quality Posts queue, as a 10k user do you get a delete button and a reccomend deletion button, or do you just get a delete button until you've run out of delete votes?

@hichris123 no, only 20k ers can delete -1 net scored answers in the VLQ review queue

@Braiam So then what can 10kers vote to delete?

1:09 AM
@hichris123 questions after 24hrs of being closed

@hichris123: I am only getting the recommend deletion button.
@hichris123: being a 20K+ user scares the hell out of me, though.
because I will only be able to suggest deletion for 10 bad posts as opposed to 20 potentially as a 10K+ user.

Oh, they don't let you recommend deletion once you're out of delete votes - gotcha.

20K+ users do not recommend, but cast.
but actually, we would need an experienced 20K+ user to potentially correct me. I do not know what actually happens... it may fall back to recommend deletion... I am really not sure, eventually...
if it does not, it is bad.

I would bet it doesn't fall back, as I can't flag to close when I run out of close votes.
Not sure though.

Hm, it is a bit, but on the other hand I have seen moderators failing audits... — Yannis Feb 14 at 15:02
haha

1:18 AM
Blasphemy!

@hichris123: also, I feel delete casts wasted for trivially poor posts that could be deleted by 10K- users.
so I would not personally cast delete votes for that in the VLQ review queue. It is a bit itchy part of the system if you ask me.

@LaszloPapp Huh, true. So be a 10k user in the VLQ queue, and then be a 20k user in every other part of the site! :D

IMO, delete cast is a bad idea in the review queue. It should remain recommendation, yes.
and you could still cast delete votes explicitly if you want, e.g. someone is approving a clearly bad post in there.
but I will only open up a meta request for this system change when I reach 20K+, and I get annoyed enough.
currently, it is still a long way to go. :-)

Just become Jon Skeet and somehow get tons of rep. :P

Not everyone can be born with such a cool last name.

1:30 AM
what would be more interesting for individuals is e.g. having priority for 20K+ users to see certain career job opportunities, although that would bad for the recruiters.
@hichris123: who is that JS? Some fantasy name from a javascript maniac?

Skeeter was Doug's best friend on Doug. He was also like a teal smurf.

@LaszloPapp lol. Maybe JS was named after Jon Skeet... you never know. :P

No. JS was named after Java.

But Skeet is everything!

@LowerClassOverflowian such a fallacy

@AaronHall apparently is the content of OP comment, he should tell him how to edit his own question instead

I've seen this sort of edit being made before.

I would approve it if it was an old Q, but if it's recent, nope

I see it, then.

One can get plings when messaged in chat. Can one get the same for messages on main sites?

@user13500 messages?
you mean comments?

2:42 AM
Err, yes.

there is no audible notification on the site, but you do get an inbox item
you get a push notification if you have one of the mobile apps

Yes, but usually I'm in some other window. Vim, or a fiddle etc, and would be nice to get a pling when comment received.
I can write a quick plugin for it, but was wondering if there was anything native.
Some config. I have missed.
Could use the mobile, but that would not give the best work-flow.
It's only for some cases – For example where I'm waiting for a user to respond e.g. to collaborate in chat on a fiddle.
I'll look into the API. Have heard about it but never looked at it.
Guess the easiest is to perhaps use tampermonkey or the like, as one would not need to concern oneself with logins etc.
Then again that would be rather fragile to changes to the site.

Ping =)

Pong

@user13500 you could enable desktop notifications in chrome

2:49 AM
@BenCollins: Yes, I use that for chat – but I do not get notified on messages.
(outside chat)
Or, you mean perhaps to use it in a script for notifications?

user202362
Are Stackoverflow chat bug fixes really low on the development priority list?

@user13500 sure. idk - I almost always have a window open with the top bar showing, so the inbox badge is enough for me
@sudorm-rfTelkitty depends on how bad, but yeah, generally

@BenCollins: If I'd had two monitors, perhaps, as it is now I can't usually spare that many pixels when doing "other" work ... :)

I think this question really deserves an answer

Yeah. I think that is the consensus.
If there ever was a consensus.

Since when do we come to a consensus on meta? I thought all we did was endlessly argue. :P

Oct 14 '10 at 13:51, by radp
A community decision is formed through sufficient amounts of whining on meta.

Makes sense. ;)

Someone should put that in the SE constitution.

3:17 AM
@jadarnel27 It's on the starboard in the Whining Room. Does that count?

The SE constitution is from 2008, it's old and outdated.

(No, actually, it's one below the starboard.)

@hichris123 I'd say NAA

Ben , why do you have your own room?

Looks like a textbook VLQ to me. (Caution: I'm probably wrong.)

3:19 AM
@michaelb958 I can get behind that metric.

@Ben Yeah... it's the border between NAA, VLQ, and the abusive/nonsense/should apparently be offensive flagged. Thanks for taking care of it.

wasn't I :-)
looks like an algorithm got it

Dec 7 '13 at 4:48, by Undo the Snowman
Does it qualify as abuse? I always thought that was abusive to others.
Dec 7 '13 at 4:50, by Shog9
@UndotheSnowman yes
Shog9 says random characters are abusive. That is the only reference I have at the moment.

Okay, I trust Shog.

user202362
~_~

3:22 AM
I think the interpretation he's going with (and I've seen it on Meta once or twice) is that dumping random, useless crap onto the site (that is unintelligible, and cannot be considered an answer) is abusive to the site.

Should I be worried since I trust Shog? Or will something horribly wrong happen to me now?
@jadarnel Yeah, that's what I've seen, too... Makes sense.

Right. The constitution is composed of:
* No whining.
* Suggest edits.
* Star things in chat.
* Provide examples.
* Drink bitter coffee.
* Don't use RGBW or HSI colour formats.
* I said no whining.
* Downvote great ideas.
* The servers blow up occasionally.
* ALL CAPS IS GOOD.
* Decisions are made by whining.
* Snort occasionally.
* Meta is good.
* Cry occasionally.
* Vote serially.
* Leg pain is good.
2
That's a hell of a constitution.

link to the constitution?

@michaelb958 Hahahahaha
Well done.

user202362
3:25 AM
leg pain is good for whom? local doctors?

Someone needs to ratify that (whatever that means). @BenCollins, you work here - let's get the ball rolling! =)

@sudorm-rfTelkitty The constitution is unclear. More whining is required.

@jadarnel27 hah. ratification = votes, my friend

Perfect!
That's what this place is all about, voting.
We'll vote the crap out of a constitution.
And maybe vote some crap into it.

@jadarnel27 Voting and whining. Can't forget the whining.

3:27 AM
Ah, right. Of course that.

user202362

meta isn't for trolls. It's for misunderstood trolls.

user202362
damn I am carrying my own pic as avatar, that some how inhibits me from trolling :'(

user202362
I need to change it soon, but I kind of just changed to this picture so kind of have to wait a few days ...

I think SO would be much better if every account was required to verify as a real person.

3:32 AM
@AaronHall Like Facebook?

I already take it back. Ok, not really, but had the ability to verify as a real person.

I think SO would be much better if every account had to verify as a real person that was not their self. That way only the very clever people could get in.

I'm practically there, I link to my LinkedIn account
I'm not that clever

I think SO should charge $50 a month to access the site

I might pay.
But I want to customize my experience.
narf

3:48 AM
SE would be awesome if they had between 1 and 5 different paywalls for each site
Like to access the popular tags posts on SO , you would have to pay more. But you could pay very little to access the obscure tags.

Hi, on SO, there is a question being closed which is vb.net but the duplicate is c#, though the question is about string.format and is the same. (without ; ) Is that right or not?

IMHO any decent developer should be able to convert between those two languages. Especially if the question is not about the syntax.
(FYI, post the link to the question in here if you ask something about it.)

Of course good developers should, but will they search the right tags, and by your definition there should not be vb.net tags ? Pretty harsh but I agree with you, just checking whats the standard around there. thx. (FYI stackoverflow.com/questions/22329838/…) I didn't post the link because its not that interesting
My question was more about general behavior

7:58 AM
Morning!
@Archlight I added the .net tags to both questions which better reflects the topic asked in those questions

8:14 AM
smart solution.

Or the easy way out :-)

But I've been active helping the poor unloved vb.net crowd (being a late converter to the true c syntax ) And almost everything is by and large duplicates of something the c# crowd has already found out....

Yeah, that is a little bit the issue with .Net. The important bits are in the Base Class Libraries

It feels dumb adding a vb syntax version answer to a good c# answer (duhh every vb.net dude should be able to convert it himself) but the poor vb's are really stuck and not many helping them

Peter HorvathWhich I am doing normally: I maintain the normal & cooperative communication even if it is painful. But it requires a psichological force which I can't/won't maintain on the longterm. My question were, if better solutions are existing here?

@rene are we counting those I'm imagining, or not?

9:23 AM
I'll make it easy for you @Bart: Yes, count the one you imagine as well...

That's not making it easy @rene. That's a lot of counting.

That is only in your mind

Is this deleted by the owner?
I just started to write an answer...

Heck, borrow my smiting stick

Ah, that will work, tnx!

@Bart If rene is bullying you, you have these options

Why do you think I was able to write that answer that quickly @LowerClassOverflowian?

I miss start crying on that answer

These aren't tears @rene. This is manly eye sweat.

was this rude?
@JanDvorak — So express that opinion with a close vote on the question instead of a comment on an answer. — Quentin 13 mins ago

Annoyed perhaps. Rude, not really.

9:52 AM
Did I reply correctly to it?

It's not bad, but I wouldn't draw it out into an extended debate.

Thanks. I would like to see him close more. Is there a good way?

Not really. Vote to close before he can answer.

I did. There's only one close vote so far, though there was until ThiefMaster came in. Thanks!

And if you feel such answers are not useful or even bad, you can always downvote. But that's up to you.

9:57 AM
I'd vote, but I ran out of close votes like 8 hours ago

@Bart I'm wondering if this would cause an offensive response from said user towards me.
I generally don't downvote answers to low-hanging-fruit questions. Should I?

I have a hard enough time to keep up with my own irrational behaviour @JanDvorak. I can't predict that of others. ;)

@Bart Thanks :-)

10:55 AM
@JanDvorak Yes. (Regarding the example that you referred to) I'd downvote both the question and the answer (esp if it's a 100K user).
Oh, it's ~300K actually.
A couple of downvotes more on the question and then vote to delete it.

how many downvotes are needed before I can delvote?

a total of 3, I believe.
Unfortunately, those answering such questions are the ones who'd upvote those too. Making it difficult.
In this case, your comment indicating the typo and the answer came pretty much at the same time. I've seen 100K+ users answering when a comment indicating a typo was posted a couple of hours back.
@JanDvorak Voted to delete. Now it's up to you!
(As I already mentioned both the question and the answer were worth downvoting.) Done that too!

11:29 AM
I still can't delvote. Will downvoting the answers help?

No, it takes 3 days

this comment should be added to flagging options.

hi guys, can anyone tell me if the accepted answer on this question is displaying strangely - I've flagged it - but as yet there is no response: stackoverflow.com/questions/1732348/…

That is on purpose @TonyCronin

11:40 AM
Whoops.

You can see it was already locked by a diamond so it already got attention from a mod (or a dev in this case)

thanks @rene
@rene can I delete or retrieve my flag?

No, it will get declined...
What flag did you use?

oh well, Should have read more carefully.
I used a moderator needs attention. Filed in details "Text is displaying very strangely (seems to be jibberish, has possibly been compromised? Corrupted?). Have checked on three separate browsers (firefox, safari) on two separate OS's (Mac and Ubuntu) –"

Well, you're out of luck in this case. You'll add +1 to your declined flag count :-)

11:45 AM

@rene it's not the end of the world...
@rene, nothing to the mortification I felt when I had a question closed!
but that's another story...

12:35 PM
Ha, Zalgo made another victim
@VishwasSharma If that comment is correct, then why not locate the canonical duplicate and close it against that? Now it says This question does not appear to be about programming within the scope defined in the help center. which is of course bullshit nonsense

12:53 PM
@Bart Of-course, we can't add this kind of language anywhere in official website. I was just adding some humor. My apologies if I did it in wrong place and btw question is already closed as off-topic.

12:59 PM
Don't worry @VishwasSharma. It just annoys me that a user seems to have used a custom close reason for a situation he stated was a dupe many times over. Now he's leaving a confused OP behind, and possibly all for some snark. That annoys me. But it's not your problem of course.

1:16 PM
@VishwasSharma since you're here, I noticed you probably upvoted this answer - while the answer itself is not wrong, it just repeats what other answers on same question already said. So in the context of the whole question, it's not a good answer.

Who broke the websockets this time?
Wheel of blame time?

Nobody notices a thing, yet @MartijnPieters immediately wants to place blame ..... #suspicious

I'll restart the browser then..

@MartijnPieters it appears they totally ditched the web sockets, it doesn't even try to connect
It always used to show in the network tab of Chrome, not any more :(

Indeed, I see (or don't see) the same.
Usually that means someone b0rked the JS.

This, or someone gracefully removed it from the code.
(no errors in console, so JS is not broken)
let me check the source...

1:53 PM
That doesn't mean it is not broken Shadow.
it just means the code that initializes the socket is not run or the exception is caught and silenced.
Could still be a bug. :-)

Just spin that wheel. A bit of extra blame never hurt anyone (not on that list)

I blame Zalgo. you shouldn't bring up his name!
oops

Ah, a weight is lifted off my shoulders. The curse has been passed on ...

2:33 PM
@BenCollins It's still bugged though?

@Lankymart doh! got lazy and didn't scroll up

It seems fixed in the normal question view but in search (or at least tag search) it's still showing questions with upvoted answers as accepted

So it's not just me then?

not just you

Thought I was going mad...

2:34 PM
@3ventic that's a matter of interpretation, I suppose
depends on whether or not you consider "upvote" =="accepted"

Good catch didn't think it could just be related to the search, my normal question view shows as I'd expect.

What's the point of the white green-bordered bubble if it only appears when answers don't have upvotes? :p

How can an upvote be accepted? "The app currently has three states, same as the websites. Here are what they are for the app" quote from Kasra Rahjerdi ♦

@3ventic not much. I think of upvoted and accepted as distinct states. Your best bet for getting clarity from @KasraRahjerdi is to keep following up on meta
although it looks like he's in this room

I don't really mind it either way as I only use the app for notifications and then open chrome to view the site, but the inconsistency between search results and the normal question lists (active, newest questions without any search) bothers me a little.

@Bart Got it, thanks! Funny to get an upvote though because that code has been broken for more than a year since something was changed in the SE image upload mechanism.
Also, never knew about this timeline feature.

Yeah, that one is something you have to know about. Not really an obvious feature

Right, bookmarked and updated the answer hopefully @KasraRahjerdi will see it.
See you laters...

@Bart we should enjoy it while it lasts though, the devs said that they don't intend to fix it if it breaks too badly

@Lankymart Huh that's really strange. My code seems like it's doing the right thing. It might just be that the API is returning "is_accepted" when it has an answer of more than one vote. I'll investigate today, thanks!

@KasraRahjerdi @3ventic pointed out that it does appear to only be happening when you search, the default views for questions works fine. I've bookmarked the whole convo we had and added it to the your answer...might be worth a gander ;)

@ShadowWizard I should make that common practice here as well.

@KasraRahjerdi Cheers, see ya.

Q: rain with transparent background for android application

LunatikulI need a gif image that is having transparent background and heavy rain. Please post some links, i really need it.

I've had a flag sitting on it for the past few days, but it hasn't been closed yet.
And I'm also the only person to downvote it.

Voted both down and to close

did that ^^^^

Oh, wow. I just noticed it only had three views.
three!

At least this should push it in the queue now

Hopefully

nice one
Huh, after looking at my flagging history, I noticed that my "offensive" flag on this was declined...

It's not really offensive though, is it?

@TheGuywithTheHat true, it's not offensive

The flag description says:
> This answer contains content that a reasonable person would deem inappropriate for respectful discourse.

Calling answer incorrect is not disrespectful

3:28 PM
Removed the annoyed rambling. At least that cleans it up.

It's crappy answer, no doubt, but not offensive.

I think a reasonable person would deem "You're ALL wrong, but I'm RIGHT" inappropriate for respectful discourse.

With a flag, you're essentially asking to have it nuked though. When an edit would have sufficed.

@TheGuywithTheHat nope. Maybe the flag description should be changed to indicate it should be used in extreme cases only.
The flag tooltip itself says:
> flag this post for serious problems or moderator attention
Note the "serious" :)

3:31 PM
Anyway, no harm done, assuming you got other flags deemed helpful you're all good
@Bart you have some secret repository for those images? ;)

@ShadowWizard yep, the internet.

lol, top secret!

D'y'think I should make a to change the flag description slightly?

3:33 PM
Don't go sharing that information @ShadowWizard

@Bart this one is better.

@TheGuywithTheHat go ahead, meta rep is fun! :)

Q: Improve description of offensive flag

The Guy with The HatA while ago, I saw this answer: These answers are ALL wrong! Getting to the point, the CORRECT answer is The Break Statement. I thought that "a reasonable person" would deem this answer "inappropriate for respectful discourse," so I flagged it as offensive. Later, I saw: flagged as offe...

@Doorknob Seems somebody posted a new "out-of-context" question on arqade :P

Q: Why do I stop eating corpses? Should I keep eating them anyway?

DoorknobOccasionally, when I try eating a corpse, I get the message The {monster} corpse tastes terrible! You stop eating the {monster} corpse. Why does this happen sometimes? All corpses "taste terrible," but usually the character doesn't stop eating them. Should I ignore this message and finish t...

A: Echoing a query doesn't work (returns "Resource id #18")

Your Common SenseIt makes me always wonder - who are all those people? The OP, who can't even copy/paste the simplest code example from any tutorial, and who thinks that almost every literal in SQL query have to be quoted The zealous participants, who scarcely understands basic syntax but eager to share their...

Come on, I know what meta is. A site having a "Not a real question" close reason is anything but a discussion site. — Your Common Sense 9 mins ago

uhhh.... exactly

I like this guy ;)

There's a discussion tag on Meta haha. And there's probably no point in mentioning to him that there is no such close reason anymore =)

Just wondering. Are custom close reasons like "This question appears to be off-topic because it's about WordPress" valid?
@jadarnel27: He's done this many time before. And I think mods have told him not to repeat it. But he still does it. :P

@AmalMurali "like" that? As in, "of this form"? Sure - that's why it's the default text in that entryfield

I think if it's a good question about WordPress, but not about programming, then that's an appropriate close reason.

An example of one such question: stackoverflow.com/questions/22328175/…

@AmalM Yeah, I've seen Your Common Sense in action before.
He's a character.

4:46 PM
@jadarnel27 Who haven't? ;)
Or "hasn't"? I don't know know :p

Oh. Hmmm. I'm not confident that question should be closed at all.
@AmalM "Hasn't" would be the right choice there =)

Thanks!
@jadarnel27: How about this question then?

This question appears to be off-topic because it is about WordPress. — Amal Murali 16 mins ago
That is a bad custom close reason @AmalMurali
WordPress related questions are not by definition off-topic for Stack Overflow. They might very well be programming related.

@Bart: Okay. What would be a better close reason?
