@hichris123 had a question?

@BenCollins Well, not anymore... but if you're bored would you mind telling me what this function does?
(well, the function around there, but whatever)

looks like it's reading a register called UCSR1A, checking a particular bit to see if it's 1 or 0, and if it's 0, putting a char at the tail of a ringbuffer
serial device driver communication, looks like
also, as an aside, there's nothing C++ about this. It's C.

Yeah, serial.
@BenCollins Oh, okay.
Why do you C people make everything so confusing for me to understand?
:P

what's confusing?

3:42 AM
Everything. But that's probably due to me knowing and loving Java, and having no clue what some of those functions are.

main thing to remember is that C has no runtime. there is no vm to protect you from yourself.

Is there something cultural about wanting to know the real name/face of the moderators? I'm honestly curious.
There's all these posts saying "congratz, now it's time to upload a real photo!" as though, no that you're a mod, there should be a grand unmasking
(Over in the announcement post meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/223009/…)

What is wrong about your real name, really?

@meagar I use an actual photo. I don't see why all the others shouldn't

@LaszloPapp What's wrong with an alias?
It's just weird. I didn't hear a single mention of it in chat or in the meta question before India woke up

@meagar: some people feel more comfortable with real names (me, too), like when you introduce yourself in real life as the first step... It really feels like someone has something to hide ... It is not natural to many.

Then there are 4 posts in the space of a few minutes all with the same sentiment, "congratz, time to unmask"

6:22 AM
Bill the Lizard has used a pseudonym and a lizard avatar since... well, probably before Stack Overflow existed

@Shog9 That was only because I forgot "Save and copy to all profiles" changed my name >.<

@mmyers It's a case of asking why others should

But hey, maybe I won't re-rotate it.

meager, AFAIR, they promised to reveal photos, and that is what the audience is rightflly asking for. If you do not keep your promise as a fresh moderator ...

@meagar Maybe you should post that as a comment on every answer in the post?
;-)

6:28 AM
meagar: also, I think there is too much read into this. I do not see anyone mentioning it as a requirement.

@LaszloPapp Only Bohemian made that promise

I have yet to figure out how those dotted 2px borders get there.

@LaszloPapp And I didn't say anybody said it was a "requirement"

"user-container user-232889 monologue catchup-marker catchup-marker-2"

meagar, not only, no.
I do not think Salman wrote it as "requirement" anywhere, but feel free to correct me if I am wrong. He seems to have even put a ":-P" in there. That being said, some people feel more comfortable about the core people of a community with real names and pictures (including me). It is similar to when you introduce yourself in real life, at least to me. It gives more confidence. — Laszlo Papp 5 mins ago

6:34 AM
Err, I meant of the nominees...

meagar, not even that, no.
there were at least two people AFAIK.

@LaszloPapp Neither Bluefeet or 0x7ffffffffffff...fff.
They made no such promise to uphold

I do not recall to have mentioned they would.
but why is it a big problem if people ask for photos and real names? I am still not sure.

I just don't understand where it's coming from
I think it's quite rude to ask people to reveal personal details on the internet

it is even possible that bluefeet or ~0 would reveal it later by their choice.
is it rude to ask for real names of people, especially when they lead your community? Interesting opinion...

6:40 AM
On the internet, on a site which has absolutely no requirement for using real names, yes, I think it is

if it is rude, perhaps you would handle flags and votes with such opinion, too, and I am not sure that is the best for a moderator.
I do not think anyone would like to abuse their names and photos.

[ SmokeDetector ] All-caps title: A QUESTION ON MAXIMA MINIMA on math.stackexchange.com

IMHO, it is friendliness to ask for your name, but perhaps it boils down to different cultures. :-)

@LaszloPapp What? What does this have to do with abuse? You think my attempting to protect the privacy of users would make me a bad moderator?

They can protect their privacy if they wish to. I really do not see the problem there. It is possible that someone disagrees with you, and reveal those because they think it is a nice thing, and in that case, your protection is unwarranted.

6:43 AM
@meagar This would be easier to follow if you replied to specific messages. :)

@mmyers I'm new here :p
@LaszloPapp I can't follow this. My opinion is basically that people are entitled to their privacy; how could I possible carry this into handling flags/votes in a negative way?

@meager: if you call people rude for their personal opinion when they are trying to build confidence and friendliness, only, I am concerned that you would do this in other situations, too, but that is just my concern, and perhaps you are just too emotional about privacy now, and it would not happen elsewhere.
but it is probably simpler to follow on meta if you think it is a big deal.

@LaszloPapp It wasn't my intent to call you rude, or to be insulting, I apologize if it came off that way

perhaps you had some privacy issues in your life and that is why you are so concerned, but even that, why for others? :-)

hah, pretty sure you can google him and find him, someone did that just the other day

6:52 AM
@MagicMan: yes, actually I did that for "all" the candidates before voting. :-)

I don't have privacy issues, I have a pretty well-established online professional personae established around 'meagar' which happens to be based on my real name
But I just don't see the connection between moderators being able to do their job and moderators revealing their real-life identities

i don't either, but im guessing it's not a unanimous thing

Anyways, 2am, bed.

@meagar: this site is about community, at least to me, not just about some people doing their job.

Q: Improving spam posts with approved suggested edit

In modern parlance, artillery refers to an engine of war that uses stored energy, whether mechanical, chemical, or electromagnetic, to project munitions far beyond the effective range of personal weapons. The earliest forms of artillery were in large measure employed as stationary devices designed to breach fortifications or reduce a single obstacle. The destructive capabilities of early gunpowder siege weapons led to development of mobile versions suitable for employment on the battlefield. This development continues such that today artillery comprises highly mobile weapons of great ...

@GraceNote what do you mean?
Maybe I wasn't clear..

What I mean is that there's no "biggest" error.

Sam
ok, but, for example, I opened a question on meta.SO for saying that giving a 7 - 30 - 365 days ban means that the punishment is growing in an exponential way
I got strongly downvoted just for saying this and I got auto banned for that

Default does grow exponentially, yes.

@GraceNote another question here (no, not the one of before). Why a cactuar? or it is just a cactus dancing doll? Final Fantasy fan?

Sam
usually in the world the punishment doesn't grow in an exponential way.
exponential growing punishment are very effective

1:14 PM
@SPArchaeologist I have a cactuar plushie. I think that pretty much is explanation enough.

Sam
china, for example, uses really strong punishment against people who disobey
they are really effective..
a less bit fair

Gah, not this again.

Sam
no, I just wanted to know your opinion
nothing more
I've finished

@Sam We do. That's pretty much the simple of it. If someone doesn't seem to learn after being instructed what not to do and they do it, which if I recall, this whole discussion is classified under that and Ben Collins even warned you that rehashing this discussion would result in chat suspension, then we up the ante to try and drive the message in.

Sam
ok, but it's really easy to win in this way
thanks for your time

1:17 PM
Or people listen and not do what they're told not to do. It's a pretty simple system. Exponential punishment only triggers because people continue to do things that they're told not to do. If you don't do those things, you don't get suspended and the exponential effects don't kick in.

Sam
@GraceNote ok, I understand.. but what about a quadratic growing punishment..
I've understood that very strict and drastic punishment are really really effective.
I was speaking about how "human" and respectful of people feelings they are.

Since I didn't disengage from the very start here, I'm going to be soft and not do anything about this, but let me restate this. If the subject of any of your suspensions comes up from you again, it's going to result in your chat account being temporarily suspended as well. The situation has been explained over, and over, and over again. Which is, precisely, what resulted in your initial suspension in the first place.
So. No more.

4 simultaneous bounties on 3 SE sites brought me a total of one answer

Grace.. I was really upset in the first time.. Now I'm not arguing any more, I'm apologizing. I'm very polite.

But if you just want to stop hearing me, without any concern for what is fair, and of my mood, you can close my mouth in every moment, when you want.

I know I have been very heavy.. but also ShadowWizard and other memers strongly agree that it was not fair what happened to me.

Do as you prefer, ban me also from here if this is your way of solving problems with people who complains. I'm not combative any more.

@GraceNote nicely put.

1:37 PM
ah, so flag "queue" indicator was moved to the left of the profile photo at the top?

It's always been there, we just normalized the color.

@GraceNote So that is a cactuar. That also means that I have found someone else that may be a jrpg fan. Nice to know. (which also reminds me: where my Tales of collector edition went? Come on, deliver that package quickly, I need the Colette figure for my workbench)

@GraceNote: not for me. It was on the right, on the left of the "review".

@LaszloPapp That's where suggested edits sit.

@GraceNote: I am referring to the "flags", not SE.

1:42 PM
@LaszloPapp Which site were you a mod on?

@GraceNote: not mod, just 10k+ user, but SO.

Proper flag queue has always been on the left. I guess we grouped the 10k stuff with the suggested edits on the right before.

oh has the flag counter moved?

For 10k users apparently

interesting

1:46 PM
@GraceNote: yes, so it has not been always there. I realized it a couple of minutes ago
it was not there 1-2 hours ago or so. :-)
(at least in my case)

Yeah, I just refreshed and saw it move, heh.

/me wonders when the first meta post comes out

Does adding a bounty to a post cause it to be pushed back to the top of the list?

If it's bumped? If so, yes.

huh
I had one upvote on my question for 2 days straight. I added a bounty and received one upvote after 14 hours. I edited my post to add some information and got 4 upvotes within 20 minutes.
And if anything, the time when I added the bounty was way more primetime than the edit.
Weird stuff

2:12 PM
@GraceNote: what I do not get is why the width is twice as more than the necessary for the SE.
is there something else put into the previous place of the "flags" indicator?

@LaszloPapp Hm?

gosh, the 5 suggested edits are now gone, so I cannot take a screenshot.
@GraceNote: but in essence, the width has not changed, yet the flag was moved out.

This is an old screenshot pre-revamp, but position of the old flag indicator in the wrong color should still match the current, if I were to go to Meta while a flag was live.

it is not like that for me.
try to stay around a bit on SO and see the suggested edits when they queue up.

Looks to be the same width ultimately. A pending suggested edit should push "mod" far enough to the left for it to sit comfortably without any bumping of the UI.

2:17 PM
if that was the main concern, it is in the wrong place now.
it could be placed next to the rep notifications.

Is it odd that I miss the orange of the suggested edits indication?

No, that's not a concern

@ChrisForrence: no because it is not orange now.

Mods always had the flags placed on the far left anyway so the only ever "push" was from suggested edits, which again, it fits comfortably.

( at least for me )

2:18 PM
Suggested edits are maroon, flags are orange.
New network standard that we are normalizing across the network instead of using colors different on each site.

@GraceNote: Oh really? That sounds really handy, actually

^ Stack Overflow with a suggested edit as I see it.

@GraceNote: as I wrote, this looks different for me.

@GraceNote does the color chosen for suggested edits relate to anything? ^_^ You know, like Bastianich from Master Chef .... "What is the color of this steak? what does it reminder to you?..."

Take a screenshot whilst the suggested edits are live
That way, we can actually make a Meta post about the display error.

2:21 PM
It seems you have space for three items now.
I would not go to meta because it might be a feature, not a bug.
I have place for two items.

Oh, you mean the amount of "empty" space?

I expected place for one item, but then again, I was not aware of the "mod" button.
yes.

I only have sub 2k reputation and no gold badges on Stack Overflow, that affects my size space significantly.
We need the extra space for people who have lots of reputation and badges.

ah, right, you have no gold stuff.
hmm, yeah, long badge and rep count space makes sense for 100K+ users, yeah.

I propose to use the extra space to visualize a "Donate rep to lower ranks users" button instead -_-

2:25 PM
There's also the diamond box there, which is actually a tertiary inbox that moderators get for SPECIAL THINGS
(Soon to be MORE SPECIAL THINGS)

ok, thanks.
Grace, I am still confused a bit though to be fair.
because the flag icon was moved out, but the space is left with the same width.

@Grace always wondered, no special tools for community managers? ;)

so, does it mean that the users got more support for storing high rep and badge stuff?
or was it expanding to the left before, and now right?

I think it's just normalization with how it shows for mods and such.
Because for mods we always displayed the flags on the left, next to the diamond box, so the space was always designed around that situation since that's where it gets most crowded.
Badges and such expand to the left direction.
Or, wait, no they don't.

Left? We have just discussed that it would be right

2:32 PM
I was thinking we had a fixed right margin.
But in reality it's a fixed left margin.
They expand to the right, yeah, if I look at how it looks on Meta compared to SO

but how was it expanding before?
it could not expand to the right since that was saturated.

hey everyone !

(talking about non-mods)

Well, non-mods didn't have the "mod" menu item, which is larger than the flag indicator would be in the long run
So we could still expand to the right there.

@GraceNote: I do not think so... let me a find a screenshot.

2:34 PM
@ShadowWizard We have other means to access things besides the topbar.

@GraceNote blasphemy! :D
@TGMCians hey to you too!

No, just intelligent design decision. CM tools are only used by a tiny number of people (namely, us CMs), so making UI changes that have to account for the stuff we use is basically spiting everyone else on the entire network.

that one makes sense.

@GraceNote plus, it allows you to safely take screenshots without risk of revealing secratz
