@LaszloPapp Yes, it is pretty clearly defined. LOTS of meta posts on what makes good questions/answers and when those will get closed/deleted.

Hey all! Not usually active on chat, but how do you feel about a compilation of review queue fixes as an MSO question? Do you think it would be beneficial to sort them out into one place?
CW of course

Hi once again

Workaround: two-part conversation.

@3ventic Hi. There's been ...some drama.

I was here about an hour and a half ago.. What did I miss during that?
I just got my first gold badge on mso and so

@3ventic In the past hour and a half, ...I don't think much actually happened. It's been less than a big screenful since then, and half of that was those oneboxes up there.

12:47 AM
@3ventic Congrats!

Im on mobile so I wont open too many links
Desktop version of the chat is so much better than the mobile one..

Desktop version of everything is better than the mobile one :)

Mobile doesnt even send the msg when you use enter
It inserts a new line and hides what you typed before

CenturyLink sent us a letter saying that our current service would be ending next week, and if we wanted to continue using CenturyLink, we'd need to upgrade to their new Prism service. My dad went online to change, and it says that Prism is not available in our area.

is this weird?
I mean... that's more than a year ago...

@Braiam The flags queue only shows when the first flag was cast. So someone cast a flag on Dec 1 '12, which got declined or dismissed or whatever. And then recently another person flagged it.

mm... sounds legit

2:06 AM
Oooo I got another gold badge on The Workplace.

feels good?
@michaelb958 what the heck is Godwin's Law and how it's related?

Godwin's law (also known as Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies or Godwin's Law of Nazi Analogies) is an assertion made by American attorney and author Mike Godwin in 1990 In other words, Godwin said that, given enough time, in any online discussion—regardless of topic or scope—someone inevitably makes a comparison to Hitler or the Nazis. Although in one of its early forms Godwin's law referred specifically to Usenet newsgroup discussions, the law is now often applied to any threaded online discussion, such as forums, chat rooms and blog comment threads, and has been invoked for the inapprop...

@AnnaLear yeah, reading it now...
is just a sad day for Psychologists... someone used their research and theories as weapon to support a weak argument where the only rhetoric was "Y U NOT AGREE WITH ME"... but meh... moving on...

@Braiam I thought it was particularly interesting that he rests his claims of expertise in psychology on having been a patient
not that I think real psychologists have tons of credibility anyway

@BenCollins I did not read that bit...

ARRRGH

@Seth +1 for the suggestion. I'd really like that to be fixed...

@hichris123 Yeah, me too.
Aaaand bounty started.

Can you award a bounty to your own answer?

nope.

What I was betting... but can Community auto-award it to you?

2:38 AM
@AnnaLear That. Is. Interesting...
@hichris123 Nope.
\o @RaghavSood

I'm very confused. Why are you starting a bounty if you just want to give it to yourself?

@AnnaLear because @Seth
:/

@AnnaLear I'm not, I just wanted my otherwise "bounty text" to stay around when the bounty was over.
I suppose I could have done it in the comments...
I'm really tired right now.
@AnnaLear If you want to convert it to a comment, go ahead.

meh. it's meta, etc.

Q: How do I motivate my rabbit to eat more hay?

afsantosI'm well aware that hay is a fundamental part of a rabbit's diet. However, my rabbit has become very picky with its food, over time. He eats mostly fruit peels, some vegetables, carrots, and about half of the contents of pellet mix foods, leaving most of the hay untouched. That is, unless it is a...

HAMMERTIME!

@LaszloPapp SR mod here. Please, please link to the guidelines. We aren't big enough to handle a flood of low-quality questions from SO.

Then link to the guideline on the main page.
you not having enough man power should not put the burden on others; that is a bit selfish thinking. Just make the site intuitive.

I'm asking you to do a very simple thing. Just link to the guidelines.

@Braiam Of course I do. runs

@Undo: and I am asking you to reconsider your request.
Surely, making the site intuitive is more productive than putting the burden on many people's shoulder?!

4:36 AM
Can you explain why linking to the guidelines is so hard?

because I would need to look up the link?
Can you explain why linking to the guidelines from the main site is so hard?

@LaszloPapp ok, lets do this... don't tell OP about us ;)

Because mods can't do that.
yes, please don't link to the site without linking to the guidelines.

if mods cannot moderate the site, it is not worth by its definition. I am really sorry to think it this way, but I do not find it reasonable what you are writing.

make your site good, or blame yourself for the consequences.

@LaszloPapp, trying to redirect a low-quality question to another site, especially one that just entered public beta, is just plain rude. When someone pees in your gardenias, you don't tell him to pee in your neighbor's instead. You tell him not to pee on flowers.

question i'm talking about: stackoverflow.com/questions/22004521/…

do not blame ALL the other people who do not put extra effort into super minimal things that can be addressed with a little bit of effort from the site moderators, seriously.
@JoshCaswell: what is plain rude is having such a tone

4:39 AM
just because people have different opinions.
but anyway, I already lost my interest about SR, so please skip this discussion. It is yet another weirdly moderated site.

@LaszloPapp don't worry, we get 15 Q/day which is excellent for something that just entered public beta, traffic will follow given enough time

I think I requested to please skip the discussion?
and please stop discussing this on SO, as well.
if you wanna remain lazy and not put one damn link into the main site, go to meta and show your laziness in there.

@LaszloPapp Oh. So you're magically entitled to the last word? If @Braiam was hounding you on the subject a week later, you might have a right to be upset, but one final comment in response to something you said is hardly inappropriate.

@LaszloPapp Here's the bottom line: Software Recommendations is a new site, and they're expecting a lot of spam and other crap simply because of the site's topic. It's kind of the nature. They don't want people randomly being directed there just because they had a software request. If you don't want to link to their guidelines, fine, then don't link to their site at all.
3

@LaszloPapp No. Go say that to the programmers.SE people, and see what happens. They have the people to handle incoming crap, but they are pissed off by people who don't know the site saying "try it on programmers.se". You're the one telling that user to go to SR.SE, it is your responsibility to be correct in that, or don't leave that comment.
3

4:44 AM
@animuson: I whole-heartedly disagree with that, and I will not follow it. You can suspend me for the disagreement.

If a site like Programmers gets annoyed when you do that, then I think @Undo is within his rights to ask you not to link to the site, for a fledgling beta.

what a nonsense discussion when a link could be put in a few seconds....

@LaszloPapp yes, by you

good luck to hunting many people, and put burden into their shoulders.

I will be unquestionably deleting any comments linking to Software Recommendations that don't explain what the site expects as well, and I will encourage other SO moderators to do the same.
5

4:45 AM
Undo was saying that you should do that in the future

@animuson: good luck, and nice time wasting.

I would have just asked you not to leave such comments, period, but Undo is patient enough to be OK with incoming crap.

@LaszloPapp In other words, you're planning to direct people to a site where their question will be off topic, because you couldn't be bothered to look up what's on topic there, and you're accusing other people of laziness?
3

@LaszloPapp You lost interest in SR? Then please don't fling crap at it.

@LaszloPapp Yes, because there are guidelines written by the community, which the moderators have to enforce. It's hard enough for the mods, why do you have to armchair critic them? They're doing a volunteer job. Don't make it harder for them.

@Manishearth: THEY make it harder for us.

@Manish Nope, I think I started being in here around 100-ish days ago, when I first created a Meta account...

Q: I'm getting "Oops! Something Bad Happened!" when visiting Meta SO chat

WilliamsI am seeing a very strange issue on the Meta Stackoverflow Chat. Stack Overflow's chat is working for me fine, this is just the Meta's chat that doesn't work. Does anybody know why this is happening?

Guys what I do for this
Now I am able to logged on meta chat well
It was weird thing that time

@Williams: I usually leave a comment to ask for some explanation to be more educative, and it works fine in my experience.

@Undo is my SR question appropriate?

please use mSR for SR related issues.

Wat? I did use meta.sr and I pinged a specific user in this room to ask for feedback about something I asked about.

6:12 AM
@Williams: I do not think there is much more you can do, unless it is a non-working code.

Oh okay

@Williams: it would be sad to remove working code regardless it has no explanation. Also, sometimes they do comment the code which is as good as the explanation.
@BenjaminGruenbaum: why would you need to ping? You have only asked this five minutes ago. Perhaps, you can be more patient and you will get feedback in there?

@LaszloPapp pings are used to notify a specific user. I was notifying undo because I wanted interested in his opinion specifically. This is all clarified in the chat FAQ I believe.

I do not think it is a good idea to turn this chat room into an SR room, and ping people around literaly a couple of minutes after questions.
The site has already had several dramas here, and I would personally appreciate to take it elsewhere, but this is just my opinion.

Ok, great. You are entitled to have that opinion, but stop patronizing me. I'm fully capable of making my own "chat usage" decisions. If I want to ping a specific user about their opinion on something that's perfectly within reasonable usage of this chat. I don't feel like you'd have that reaction if I pinged him about my car, or JavaScript.

6:20 AM
it is not "perfectly" reasonable. You could have a chat for the new SR site if you really want to make a fuss about it.

user3016110I want to create self signed certificate. looks like this link is broken.. can you please guide me on this? thanks

Or, and just hear me out here, you can try to stop telling me what is acceptable conduct in SE when we're in a room full of CMs and mods that would have gladly told me if I was out of line when I pinged a user I know asking for their opinion.

CMs and mods are not your personal followers. They do not watch each step of yours, but really why do you need the impatience? I mean, you posted two posts within a very short while, and literally within a couple of minutes, a ping here. Do we really need that much buzz about SR in this room?
This has been ongoing since yesterday.

It's not like I'm a new chat user, I have 70K messages in chat - that's more than 10 messages for every one you have. I'm also a room owner of one of the more popular SO chat rooms. While I appreciate criticism, I would also appreciate passing it and then not arguing about it.
@LaszloPapp I posted a ping here because I wanted to notify a specific user I want their attention on that subject - I've already said that (and it's covered in the chat FAQ).

Please show me where it is covered in the FAQ that it is good to flood this channel with SR. As I said, this has been ongoing since yesterday, and frankly, I am not happy about the SR discussions that has happened in here the last couple of hours since yesterday. So far, it has been more demotivating than fruitful.
But I will leave this topic here.

You're always welcome to open your own room and decide on the etiquette as you please there (as long as it's on topic with mso as a whole).
@balpha I feel like your post on localStorage multithreading in your blog, while a good read is somewhat misleading.

@BenjaminGruenbaum your answer's main is point is correct though; you should use the storage event. That's what I want to follow up on. When I wrote that post, the event wasn't stable yet across current browsers, but these days it pretty much is.

@balpha: hmm, just read the post out of curiosity; interesting reading.

@balpha I'm on mobile now (off my bus) but I'll try to create an isolated example later. I'd love to read that follow up :)

As for your look at Chrome, yes, they fixed it in the meantime. Try it in IE, it's still broken there.

I gave up on suggested edit reviewing

Same here @rene.

I tried gaming the system by entering a non existing suggested edit and then wait for it to appear. Then I get one, decide to reject....fail...already approved...

11:50 AM
@rene what you mean "non existing suggested edit"?

Take note of the last number http://stackoverflow.com/review/suggested-edits/4156392 add say 100, http://stackoverflow.com/review/suggested-edits/4156492 that will give a 404 until a suggested edit is generated.
You hit F5 often enough to be the first, but slow enough to prevent being throttled

@rene lol... it's not really gaming the system you can also use this to wait for new questions, other review items etc. But yeah, it's amazing how quickly edits tend to get approved or rejected. (usually approved even if total crap)
I dropped from constant 20 per day to "once in a while", still didn't give up completely.

I did 20 yesterday only because of requests for reject votes in this room

we need review bot
robo crap rejector

should I attempt to build one? For starters, I could look around how to build a turbo-refresh

12:04 PM

step #2: training. Step #3: supervised rejection (without a chance of successful rejects. Step #4: let it roam wild and kill some innocent edits in the process.
Step #5: let it flag bad reviewers on my behalf (i've never been flag-banned :-)

sounds like a solid design

Actually, just rejecting everything will let me avoid review audits and achieve a better accuracy than most humans.

@ShadowWizard: what is wrong about stackoverflow.com/review/suggested-edits/4142630 ?
Looks like a legit and useful grammar fix.

@LaszloPapp It's still wrong as it has "i" instead of "I" and it removed the code formatting.
It's actually a rollback to revision 1

@ShadowWizard: I do not see that a big problem since it is a short post, and the original grammar reads awkward.

@LaszloPapp not big, just a drop in the ocean of bad edits
but annoying drop

1:26 PM
In fact, for such short posts, I would also remove the code formatting, and I would use ` ... ` at best.
I find it useful rather than annoying.
the existing grammar was wrong, even for me as a non-native speaker.

Q: Why is deleting a comment called a "comment vote"?

Mathias MüllerEDIT: Let me break it down to something even simpler. I understand that this is a status-by-design bug. oh. :-(

lol
They're too smart for us

Hello. Can anyone explain to me why this suggested edit was rejected? I thought of posting a question on meta, but figured I'd try chat first. stackoverflow.com/review/suggested-edits/4153466

not exactly. The margin does reduce

@ShadowWizard that's because he used an easy to understand example to make his answer readable even for people that know next to nothing...

I just want to know so future mistakes can be avoided

@JWLim too much red and green in the diff
too similar to review audits

Hm.

Actually it's a rare case of valid edit being rejected

Yep, my guess as well. Perfectly fine edit, but the reviewers might have thought it was an audit.

IMO you should try submitting it again

IOW, it changes the same parts of the body our honeybot would vandalise.

I just thought that 'hold on the animation' doesn't sound right and would be unclear

Absolutely

it would

So, nothing wrong with it eh.

@Braiam yeah, the user works at Google so it explains why he use "Make it Simple" approach :D

1:42 PM
Okay. I probably won't resubmit since someone's already improved the title and added the tag. It's just the 'hold on' part. But thanks guys!

Cheers @JWLim!

@ManishBot typo

@Braiam what typo?

@ShadowWizard jqury

That's part of the title

1:44 PM
*a part

Don't think bot can detect typo's in titles, way too complex

How could this question have been deleted by community?

@Qantas94Heavy I completely see that title

@Qantas94Heavy 6 spam flags

What he said ^^^

1:49 PM
Would that be acceptable to flag as spam? That qualifies as VLQ to me but not blatant advertising.
@rene: sorry ;)

> Send online your desired Flowers and Bottle of Wine to them anywhere in Germany and make them feel special,
that's spam

NP

facepalm, indeed
lol

still deleted anyway, so no biggie

BTW, my SO rep is 13456
I still need 10k more

Okay...

Or a diamond, @Jan :)

@ShadowWizard I'm afraid that would interfere with my hope for humanity. Oh wait, I don't have one.

@JanDvorak so if no diamond, what about working at Redmond? Sounds similar enough :P
