12:01 AM
@NickCraver yeah, I think you might be carrying too much baggage from the Facebook experience. Couldn't you provide a slimmer set of features without the insane weight?
Minisites != Facebook minisite
I know I'm grasping here, but if I can implement the features using just your public API I don't see why it should impact the core site.

Hi all. Is data explorer up? Or maybe I have the wrong URL....

Looks like it's down. Blame @TimStone.

12:18 AM
Ok. @TimStone, it's your fault.
Well since I have to live without.. I'll just practice my Advanced Search-fu

@NickCraver @BenCollins Whether we call is a minisite or a subsite or a custom portal, SE needs to develop ways of scoping communities of interest within SE sites.

well, that ws a waste of time....

@PaulHicks it's back up now, we were replacing a faulty PDU unit in that rack
@Indolering we did the minimum work to get facebook to act in a non-confusing manner, any implementation wouldn't be less work

Okeedokee. ty

how many sites do you think are big enough to need scoping? It's really only Stack Overflow that you can make the argument for with any volume

12:28 AM
But that's what I am saying, maybe you are too stuck in that model.
I'm less worried about the exact form and more about ways to nurture small sub-communities.
But, there isn't much to be said, I obviously don't know the code and I keep setting off painful flashbacks for you.

again, this is only Stack Overflow with enough scale to have active sub-communities - which we believe already work pretty well with tags currently

So I'll take my leave, : )

where could I ask about a possible program/algorithm/whatever that will send the data from a phone to a laptop via bluetooth or similar?

If you think of a better model (forget the implementation details, get the UI) then post it on meta for discussion - we're absolutely open to ideas, just be sure to consider how the lists of anything work: questions, answers, badges, user profiles, etc.

anywhere?

12:33 AM
@Amaterasu there's a new beta, one moment

if you are thinking 'software recommendations' - i tried that, after been told in chat that it was okay (and edited twice by 2 other members), it was closed

link to the closed question?

it does contain far too little detail, what you posted in chat already gave more detail - see the mod's comment asking for clarification

nevermind, I'll look elsewhere

12:39 AM
ok your call of course...but please consider putting the same effort into improving that question with more detail and what your options are (you didn't include phone platform, OS on the laptop, how they're connected, what connections are available, etc.)
without those parameters, no one can answer what program works, for example iOS vs android is a significantly different question

literally I do not know hw to word it - not a case of 'won't', but 'not sure how to'

what phone OS is it?

android

is USB an option? if not, is wifi, is bluetooth?

bluetooth

12:41 AM
so USB and wifi are not options?

and I already stated the laptop is a windows 7 machine
wifi maybe... usb definitely no

ok, these are things you want to add to any question, just think of "it has to do X", "it can't do Y" and put that in there
would you like to create a user and edit those details in? I can hook the question back up to your new user

it's closed though

@Amaterasu We can fix that.

It's closed because as it was it couldn't be answered, when you edit I'll reopen it

12:45 AM
I have rejoined the site

@Amaterasu Yay!
Glad to have you back :D

@Undo hardly anything to get excited about - I am pretty dumb

No human is dumb.

who says I am human?

12:49 AM
@Amaterasu I edited it a bit, see if you want to further then we can reopen

@Undo no, they make them dumb

@NickCraver thank you - I just added the API level of the phone
@Undo nah, I am pretty dumb

@Asad At least he recognizes that 1000 LoC in a method might be an indication you should refactor!

@Undo is it suitable for re-opening? you're the mod with knowledge here, we don't like to override the mods

@NickCraver I'm reading it. So far I like it.
@Amaterasu Let me make some edits, you tell me if I mess up and change the meaning of the question

12:52 AM
go for it

@Amaterasu excel can open a CSV, that may be the simplest thing to transfer or append to, is that an option?

yes, that is certainly an option

@Amaterasu How do the edits look?
I like bulleted lists because they are easy to scan and make you think about what's really needed.

sitting in the sun for 3-6 hours when I do these experiments are draining - I like to sit on a deck chair and do my science from the cmfort of an air conditioned verandah

@JeroenVannevel It's almost like there should be a way to group related bunches of functions together.

12:56 AM
looks good

I like it.

looks good, but we'll see the reception it receives

status-norepro

@TimStone Nick already explained. You're off the hook. This time...

It's still @Tim's fault, doesn't matter if power to the firewall was offline

1:00 AM
I'll have to finish implementing a few new things this weekend as penance then.

@Undo @NickCraver thank you for your help here.... we'll see how it goes - i learn quickly (despite being as dumb as a broken toaster)

@Amaterasu It should go fine.
I can see a few very small things the community might latch on to and make you clarify, but you should be fine.

hopefully not too many more clarifications/edits... up to 8... 2 more until it becomes a CW

software recs may make sense to up that limit slightly on, @Undo thoughts?

user213963
@animuson on behalf of @user who is trying to get attention for a flag, is there anything you could do to let him chat here (or get the attention of an SO mod).

user213963
1:10 AM
(I blame caching)

@NickCraver I don't know.
There shouldn't be that many answers that fit a single question.
Wait, this is the edit one

@Undo yeah the edit thresholds

Meh, methinks we can handle it manually for now.
But I've only been on the job for, what, four hours?

user213963
And just tossing in my $0.02 on software recs, if a question gets CW-able number of answers, the question was poorly constrained.

So I really don't know yet.
@MichaelT Yeah, we came to the conclusion that it would be too broad.

1:12 AM
there are several thresholds, edits by owner, edits by distinct users, and answer count

so, my question is too broad?

@NickCraver Yup. I don't believe we need any of those changed at the moment.
@Amaterasu no. Not at all.

ah okay

We're just discussing the auto-wikification gizmo.

ah, okay - was momentarily spooked

1:42 AM
Apple rejected Charcoal because it "loaded indefinitely"..?
I'm guessing it's a problem retrieving the csv
I think it's that my query needs to be occasionally run

2:18 AM
Hi all. Anyone know how to tell in data explorer if a question has been merged? I tried checking to see if it has a join with PostLink, but that isn't filtering out merged questions.

I wonder whether this tag is that helpful: stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/curl-commandline?
Looks like stackoverflow.com/users/2953344/sabuj-hassan created it today and is adding it to questions.

What does it mean to have an 'invalid flags' flag receiving the 'disputed - a moderator reviewed your flag, but found no evidence to support it' status while the answer is not removed?

@JeroenVannevel A moderator was on the post itself and decided to decline with a reason.
It gets added to every flag that was on the post, whatever they get dismissed as.

So the NAA flags got declined with a reason and this also shows up for the IF flags?

Yep.

Gotcha, thanks

You just normally wouldn't get a reason attached because when we dismiss those from the flags queue it doesn't ask us to provide one.

I even refreshed many times, it was showing there in the recent questions
but after a 5-10 minutes then it removed from the recent questions list.
It seems a bug, ..

Caching.

I don't think so
because after few minutes [5-10] it deleted own automatically from the recent question list when I was keeping page refresh

Mat
That's exactly what caching would do. Cache reloads/updates itself every X minutes, you get to see potentially stale stuff. Deletes don't invalidate all the caches.

yeah, that was my assumption, too, because I was told decline happens for all flags.
is there any plan from SE to fix it and recalculate the "disputed" flags into helpful and declined?

We were hoping they'd do that when they revamp the flags queue and start letting us dismiss them individually, but who knows.

Q: why is this question migrated here?

user689How does this obfuscated javascript code work? Is not a puzzle and it isn't related in any way to the site. So how come it is migrated from stackoverflow to here?

5:08 PM
@JanDvorak twas migrated because it was a puzzle. Two users who commented on it (and others that were deleted) even referred to it as not a programming problem, but think of it in terms of a puzzle. Reading the "Programming Puzzles" help center, it wasn't entirely clear what you mean by 'puzzle'.

> All questions on this site, whether a programming puzzle or a code golf, should have…

> * An objective primary winning criterion, so that it is possible to indisputably decide which entry should win.

The winning condition seems clear to me: figure out what the code does?
The good news is that I learned that you don't really like those types of questions. They won't be migrated (by me) in the futurel.

"winning criterion" means "given two answers that both satisfy the rules (figure out what the program does), which one is better?"
Do you have a suggestion how to improve the wording?
In any case, thanks for the explanation
@Manishearth the bot is dead

I'm not forcing you to read it, CAPS are to indicate the importance of not telling me there are other questions similar to this. Q: Why do you lose reputation for down-voting?

BlackWaspIt is incredibly rare that I down-vote on this or any other community site. I would rather just ignore the item. However, occasionally some very bad advice is given that is worthy of a down vote. Why should this adversely affect the reputation of the down-voter?

oh thanks :)

"This was specially made for the kind of people that doesn't have anything better to do in life than to feel offended by CAPS LOCK, instead of answering the question." .... wouldn't that suggest that you shouldn't write your title in all caps to begin with?

The guy who suggested it is doing a lot of edits like that..

I'm starting to think that reviewers understand reviews as a sort of "is this an audit" game and that they are supposed to accept everything that isn't vandalism.

Someone should build an app that keeps a list of "problem users" and watches for new suggested edits from them, then sends a notification to anyone on the list.

9:12 PM
@animuson the problem is: poll SO each second, and Hadoop will kick you out. Any slower, and it won't get rejected in time.
